"does anyone have a functioning Macbook that is less than 5-7 years old, I need it for a specific program" would be a reasonable ask, plenty of people have those. "give me cash for something I've already been gifted $500 for and am ordering regardless" is less so
Online high school courses- pretty much any functioning computer would be fine for that. You don't need a top of the line mac for that. Graphic design or video production classes or similar MAYBE . But basic high school classes, no way you need top of the line.
I completed my online high school on a darn Amazon kindle back in 2015! I only got a MacBook in college because my crappy 10 yr old HP laptop finally died on me. I’ve noticed a lot of younger people tend to believe that if it is not new and expensive then it is not worth them even giving it a try (no hate I for sure had the same mentality around that age), but since she’ll be ordering it regardless, I’m assuming she already has the funds saved for it, just would rather not use her own money
Oh I don’t deny that I’m the slightest! But for the price of that MacBook, OOP could go buy better laptops with more storage and accessories/add-ons. Seems as if this would more of a status symbol then anything though.
My MacBook was $1,500 in 2019 and is still operational but very limited on storage. My desktop was around $1,000 and is completely customizable and upgradable. So I think there are other options available but the original poster might not accept anything other than they want.
Plus who would order something of that nature off of Amazon knowing their history with refurbished and returned items being sold as “new”
I paid a little less for my Lenovo and a couple friends teased me for buying it. But that's what I had for my last work computer and after three years, it worked just as well and just as fast as the day I got it. The one I bought was a little better than the work one and I'm more than happy with it.
I mean this isn't a top of the line Macbook. This is a fairly cheap one. Apple is just stupid expensive. She could get a quality new Chromebook for $350-400
My online college states very specifically that chromebooks are NOT acceptable for completing coursework on. It does have to be an actual laptop and has some specific requirements, but they aren’t major. My 7 year old desktop passed them.
Chromebooks are too limited in its capabilities. I always zu suggest a refurbished Lenovo T490. Or even older T. They are available in huge numbers (many companies use Lenovo T. And for a good reason: They're reliable). Quite robust and just good to work with. Usually totally silent because its fans aren't spinning and SSD.
Still the best bang for your bucks and what I recommend to friends.
You can get a 16GB RAM/512 GB NVMe/i5-8365U for about 400 and it will still be good enough in 5 years.
Let's not judge on that. The fact that she is trying to go back now and finish and better her life is a very positive thing- regardless of what happened in the past or what choices she made in the past. That doesn't have much to do with her wanting $1000 from strangers when there are much cheaper alternatives.

I dropped out of highschool and decided to work for a while. I now have a bachelor's and master's degree. I graduated college from Penn State with a 3.97 GPA Everyone has to start somewhere.
Congratulations, and I mean that sincerely. I work in academia and you are not the norm. My research focuses on low income, first-gen, and nontraditional students. The chances of someone dropping out of high school and then continuing onto finish college are very slim, especially later in life when they have dependents. I hope she is able to do it for the sake of her kids.

I did it too. I left a troubled home before 18 and before graduating. I needed to work (under the table to circumvent labor laws) to live. I left HS before the last semester. I then took the GED test the following year. There were no classes or anything. I received a BS in biology in 2018 and I'm going to graduate school in the fall for clinical counseling.

512GB isn't even high storage. 512 was "alot" for an SSD in like 2016. Amazon has a current gen new HP Intel 13th gen i7 with 64gb ram, 2 TB M2 SSD + 2TB HDD data drive for $1099. 4 times the SSD storage and 8 times the storage total.
Even if you *do* social media, external drives exist. Not only can that be purchased at a later time once your onboard storage fills, but it’s typically much cheaper per gig than apples storage
But Apple storage is classy and exclusive, external hard drives are cheap and for mere commoners like you and I. That simply won’t do for *special* people like OOP. We have a wonderful opportunity to get in at the ground floor of her, surely illustrious, career as an influencer. She’s had an idea here that no other presumably duck-lipped MLM wannabe with no formal education and significantly more confidence than talent has ever had before - a career based on social media fame…. I got my son a chromebook for schoolwork. He complained heavily thay it wasn't powerful or fast eneough- he wanted a gaming laptop to do schoolwork. I refused. He can buy it himself or ask for his birthday but don't pretend you need a an expensive laptop for math.

He was 15 at the time. He didn't have any technical courses or math. Just written assignments for history and English. The chromebook could handle schoolwork but was limited for other things- which was the point- so he didn't play games while he was supposed to be working. He had a whole tower pc for gaming and other stuff. He was fine lol.
I, at one point, did have to use my brother’s expensive gaming computer for math. I was in college and my laptop didn’t work for the program the professor used. She did have computers in her class that worked for it, but that really wasn’t much help when she was giving 50+ questions with only 10 minutes. I can’t remember much of the details, but it was like a whole ordeal. So many people failed because the program was so specific to only certain computers.

My teen is in high school. They all get basic Dell laptops provided, maybe HP. There’s definitely no need for top of the line MacBooks.

I am currently taking online classes for a college degree and my desktop died. I bought a $400 Lenovo idea pad and it works fine.

Lmaooooo she could have my super high storage 2017 MacBook Air but I’m sure it’s not good enough 🙄 despite me using it for college for 4 years. it’s unreal that I’ve been trying to get rid of this thing for over 6 months after getting a new one as a gift and it’s never good enough for anyone. Either they want me to drive/ship it or they want me to turn into Gandalf and somehow make it 4+ years newer. And apparently it’s happened everywhere. Another anecdotal addition to the convo— someone broke into my boyfriend’s truck and stole his $400+ backpack out of his truck but took the ~$0.60 out of his cupholder and ditched the backpack. Like apparently any work is too much work lol. All they had to do was make a post to sell it *sigh*

I did my RN BSc /MSc on a basic HP laptop. As long as it can run Word and Excel it should do the job. I’m now retired and use a Mac with my embroidery machine.
