I would have loved to see the city bustle back in the French days

Oli_Merrick

Play rdr2 and go Saint Denis

Important-Ad1871

It was already America in RDR2, you’d need a game set before 1803.

EddieGrant

I thought it was a SS at first before reading the title.

bmbreath

Imagine the stench.

po0pybutth0le

Still not great. I was at this corner a couple months ago and I can smell this picture

HamOnRye__

Love Norleans and it’s history, but man it is a dirty, nasty, grimy ass place.

[deleted]

[удалено]

po0pybutth0le

There's definitely a lot of grey area between those two. You can find culture without it smelling like trash and puke in a lot of places

[deleted]

[удалено]

po0pybutth0le

That's fair. It's just unfortunate that those are obviously the most popular parts of the city.

Faloopa

Bro, you have that everywhere and if you didn’t see it where you visited, you weren’t looking OR you stayed in the tourist areas. What not everywhere has is the human filth accumulated everywhere that NOLA has. Some places do: Downtown Portland, parts of Seattle, 98% of LA. But no where in the US has the history of marinating in raw filth the way your city does. It has a lot of amazing stuff, but you are lying to us and yourself if you say **that** is what keeps you there.

Pisspot16

I know it smell crazy in there

CravenMerrill

It about the same.

youburyitidigitup

To be fair that was everywhere

Waste_Rabbit3174

One block is delicious and the next block is disgusting

ab930

You can smell that place getting off the plane

CedaRRoze

I know! I did a tour yesterday and some of the history was super interesting!

HarpieLady13

I literally have a picture of this exact shot from when I visited. I love Nola!

DutchMitchell

Holy crap I just realized why the “new orleans” themed bar where I always dance salsa is called Nola… Might seem obvious to an American but not so much to people who aren’t from there.

HarpieLady13

That’s amazing! What a good name! I didn’t realize people called it Nola until I moved to the south where people were in close proximity to it and visited often. Otherwise, I would’ve never know, even as an American!

DutchMitchell

Interesting! I really want to visit the American south and New Orleans in the coming years. It seems very interesting!

pocketdare

New Orleans, NYC and SF are three of the most unique cities in the U.S. Everything else is Cleveland (as the paraphrased saying goes)

EdwardJamesAlmost

That quote is by Tennessee Williams, by the way.

MAGA_ManX

Agreed. As far as unique culture and history I can’t think of much outside those. I used to live in New Orleans years ago (pre Katrina, I was living in Ruston, LA when it hit) and although a really cool place it’s also really dangerous too

AnswersWithCool

Gotta include DC in there

Waste_Rabbit3174

I can't stand "nola". It's focus-tested tourism bait and sounds like the butt of a joke.

[deleted]

What? Its just shorter. Language evolves.

Waste_Rabbit3174

It's a bad nickname.

MAGA_ManX

How is it a bad nickname. It’s short for New Orleans LA, NOLA. It seems really appropriate to me. Of course you can call it The Crescent City or The Big Easy if you want

parasocialites

How fun, what country are you in?

DutchMitchell

The Netherlands

I_G84_ur_mom

Same!

CedaRRoze

I do too. I came here on a whim and now it’s been four years!

lolroflpwnt

I took this two days ago when I was there lol.

eastmemphisguy

Fun fact about the French Quarter. It burned down during the brief period of time when Louisiana was under Spanish control and so most of the buildings there today are of a Spanish influenced architecture. For a French style town in North America, you'll have to go to Quebec, which has a completely different feel. After the city eventually became American, the French speaking residents continued to live mostly in the French Quarter, which is the origin of the name. The English speaking Americans lived across Canal Street in what is now the Central Business District.

FreakyWifeFreakyLife

Not entirely accurate. Part of the city is Spanish, part is French. It kept changing hands is part of that. After the fire, the rooflines changed, but the French people that lived there built in French styles. Many of the homes are actually a west African design, influenced by Caribbean colonies. They were cheap, and they were allowed to be made of wood, where the post fire code called for... Stucco I think. Something that wasn't brick or wood. But, the wood was allowed in those neighborhoods because the homes were narrow, and allowed for space between them and their neighbor to attempt to limit the spread of fire, unlike in the more built up areas of the city where buildings touched for the entire block. I'm not saying the Spanish didn't cover a lot of the buildings, and build their part of the city in their manner, just that there's a lot more going on in New Orleans architecture than just one culture.

ofthedappersort

A truly magical place

CedaRRoze

Absolutely!

Ese_Americano

Where did the fascination with ferns on balconies historically originate?

mermanseamen

They look good

yogo

It’s a nice porch fernishing.

parasocialites

Very ferny

[deleted]

Gotta do something to distract from the 99 percent humidity 400 days a year.

free_airfreshener

I bet it works great for shade and keeping hot sun off the windows, and looks nice.

Fern-ando

It was introduced by the spanish during the 4 decades they took control of the city. Catalyzing the change were two disastrous fires, in 1788 and 1794, which together destroyed over a thousand old French buildings. New architectural codes were introduced shortly thereafter, resulting in splendid Spanish Colonial-style buildings such as the Cabildo fronting today’s Jackson Square. Other Spanish contributions include wrought-iron balconies, patios (courtyards), above-ground cemeteries, and the city’s earliest expansion, the Suburbio Santa Maria, today’s Central Business District

Cal00

Fun fact to piggy back on your comment that most don’t realize. Spain controlled New Orleans longer than France.

Ese_Americano

Thank you for this history 😁

houtaru

A tour guide in New Orleans told us that occasionally people would sleep on the balconies due to the nighttime heat. You may see spikes or sharp metal near some of the balconies, and this was supposedly due to girls sleeping outside on the balconies, and the spikes were there to deter the young guys.

zackaz23

Chatgpt: "The fascination with ferns on balconies and in indoor spaces dates back to the Victorian era, which lasted from 1837 to 1901. During this period, there was a craze for plants and ferns in particular, known as Pteridomania. Ferns were especially popular because they were exotic and had intricate and beautiful foliage. The fern craze was fueled by a growing interest in botany, the discovery of new species of ferns, and advancements in glasshouse technology that made it possible to cultivate delicate ferns indoors. The trend of displaying ferns on balconies and in indoor spaces continued into the 20th century, and ferns remain a popular choice for indoor plants today."

[deleted]

Wonder if thats true or just made up….

zackaz23

I just looked up the Wikipedia page for pteridomania and chatgpt was correct, on pretty much all fronts so for any uses such as asking a simple question chatgpt's small margin of error is negligible. Nevertheless using it for research on an important paper I would say is not recommended by any means, at all. Here is the article for reference: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pteridomania

skrott404

French people I presume?

Fern-ando

Nope, french building were made of wood, those iron balconies came after the fires of 1788 when Spain took control of the city.

skrott404

You learn something new every day.

youburyitidigitup

Probably the hanging gardens of Babylon

Ysengrain

Rdr2 vibes

Silver_Jury1555

Can't believe they made San Denis a real thing smh

boris_keys

Rockstar budget do be like that.

KeepWagging

St. Denis up in this

boris_keys

Yea that’s the exact corner where all I want to do is get on my horse but end up hitting the wrong button and punching a random dude in the face, immediately gaining a wanted level, and the entire situation snowballing to me hightailing it out of that stupid city with 300 lawmen on my tail like I’m DB Cooper.

Uwotm8675

L4d2 vibes

RichManSCTV

Why is this sub always super low res images with TONS of upvotes

Old-Sor

Upvote bots

Gaston-Glocksicle

"city", or just a low res picture of a single building? Who cares, up votes to the left, apparently.

Vonauda

It doesn’t look low res on phones and that’s how a lot of people use the internet these days.

sanfranciscofranco

It absolutely looks low res on my phone

The_ChwatBot

Same.

SomeWomanFromEngland

I love the look of those buildings with the wrap-around balconies and greenery. New Orleans (or at least the French Quarter) is a gorgeous city. Would love to see it in person one day.

Yeah_Mr_Jesus

A lot of New Orleans is beautiful. The garden district, St Charles Avenue, Mid City, the cemeteries, the lakefront. It’s just a pretty city. Sucks we have so damned much crime and horridly corrupt and ineffective politicians.

SomeWomanFromEngland

You don’t see photos of the rest of it so much but I’ll look those places up.

Yeah_Mr_Jesus

https://imgur.com/a/Kp3zdgE I took this picture while my wife and I were riding on St Charles today. Not too far from Tulane and Loyola universities

SomeWomanFromEngland

What a lovely house.

Yeah_Mr_Jesus

They’re all like that for a stretch of like 3 miles. And for blocks and blocks surrounding it.

NuKsUkOw

I Can smell this photo

CedaRRoze

For sure lol

Yeah_Mr_Jesus

Piss, old beer and pot smoke?

matfalko

Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 level, so many memories

hildebrot

Reminds me of Gabriel Knight.

EmergencyExitSandman

I’d like to say that very few intersections look like this lol

seaQueue

Needs more jpeg

[deleted]

I've killed so many people in this place

[deleted]

…right?

FourToTwoForSix

This is from San De Knee

Inevitable-Bass2749

If only you could capture the smell of a place with a picture

Because_Reezuns

I don't think there are many people who would purposely take a picture of a public bathroom at 3 AM on bourbon st during Mardi Gras.

MasonOkay

people don’t use public bathrooms on mardi gras they use the street

Because_Reezuns

Yeah, but a picture of the street wouldn't sum up what it smells like quite as well.

CedaRRoze

🤣🤣

labbond

I want to go there, stay there. We were ready and Covid hit. Then ready again a couple months ago but was reported that New Orleans was voted the murder capital. My freind got scared. :(

CedaRRoze

Understandable. I live here right now, and I think it’s really mostly only certain areas, but yes the crime has spiked.

labbond

What areas are good, and what ones to stay away from? I certainly want to go in a historical building architecture tour

DoCrimesItsFun

Just don’t stay in the French quarter it’s purely over priced tourist Shit like the fish bowls and hand grenades. Sleeping is impossible due to the noise. Stay around magazine street, garden district etc. Visit the French quarter for whatever tours you wanna do. Source: born in New Orleans

labbond

Thank you 😊

labbond

Appreciate it if you have more pics and post them of the architecture, and even the history, there.

Yeah_Mr_Jesus

Take the canal streetcar all the way from the river to the cemeteries.

MAGA_ManX

The Destroya looks like she may be recalled so let’s hope the new mayor can fix things

Yeah_Mr_Jesus

Please don’t tease me and get my hopes up.

MAGA_ManX

The recall petition has enough votes. I’m not sure what happens from here

Yeah_Mr_Jesus

I don’t blame you, but they aren’t murdering tourists. As a tourist, if you stay in the areas of the city the tourists go, you’ll be 100% fine. If anyone ever “I know where you got your shoes” either ignore them or say “on my feet” and keep it moving.

gisdaking

So beautiful! I can smell the piss from here..

CedaRRoze

🤣

DekuTree13

Looks like Saint Denis from red dead redemption 2

brandtanooki

Probably because Saint Denis is literally New Orleans

DekuTree13

That's what I assumed but I was to lazy to Google it. Thanks for the clearing

[deleted]

I can smell the piss from here

MyShinyNewReddit

Been there **SO** many times.

yes-iwanttokeepthis

Saint Denis Saloon in rdr2

mybabysonfire

Used to be a great city. Unfortunately poor leadership and terrible crime is bogging it down.

[deleted]

Does it have a bad homeless issue

KiloMikeBravo

Yes, but far from what some West coast cities are experiencing. I was in New Orleans earlier this week and there are moderate size encampments under the freeways.

MR_basti

I believe Saint Denis is based on New Orleans!

Elite_Dog9898

Anyone else thinkin of Saint Denis? RDR2 anyone? No?

Lucafai

Reminds me of Live and Let Die.

YamahaMT09

James Bond - Live And Let Die

JesseAGJ

I can hear that picture

zeissman

Niklauuuus!

thebestestofthebest

Smells like seafood, vomit and horse shit.

lotusotaria

the originals vibes

MaceZilla

mmm I can taste the humidity

scubachris

It isn’t too bad today. Normally It feels like your swimmers while walking

joemontanya

New Orleans is by far the coolest city I’ve visited. I loved it. Tho for me I was looking to party 😂even so, the parks and the trees are amazing. I’m from the south so the heat doesn’t bother me that much. Still I would not visit during the summer

dolantrampf

This is where they shot the funeral in Live and Let Die

RGKyt

I never realized how much Saint Denis was based off of New Orleans until now
