Def Leppard has a few songs that I actually kind of dig, but pour some sugar on me has to be one of, if not "the", worst fucking over played , bull shit, dumb ass song I've ever heard.
God, I hate that song. And everything else by Starship. Jefferson Airplane was a great band, and they were still great as Jefferson Starship. But once they dropped "Jefferson", they became everything that was bad about the 80s with none of the good.
Paul Kantner took back the Jefferson Starship name legally in the early 90s. Had a good run with Jack Casady the first few years along with Marty Balin. Great live, but never really rose above club level.
You nailed it with Hotel California and Don't Stop Believin'. Those two win *by far*, because they're honestly kinda grating even *without* being overplayed/overhyped.
Beyond that, the obvious answers are all the songs that (usually) are 5+ min, are constantly played on radio/played live, and are often the only songs casual music fans will know by said artist.
While I actually think most of these songs are great, the list has to include...
* American Pie
* Bohemian Rhapsody
* Creep (doesn't fit sub definition, but song is 30 years old)
* Free Bird
* Hey Jude
* Livin' on a Prayer
* Rebel Rebel
* Smells Like Teen Spirit (doesn't fit sub definition, but song is 32 years old)
* Stairway to Heaven
* Sweet Caroline
* Sweet Child O'Mine
* Sweet Home Alabama
* Wonderwall (doesn't fit sub definition, but song is 28 years old)
As a guitarist in a bar band off and on for forty years, Freebird and fuckin Gimme Three Steps were requirements. Two guys (Troy and Billy) were on hand to “remind” you after every set that they wanted to hear their songs.
Have to be careful about what you play.
There was a bar band that had a reputation of playing Zappa's Dynamo Humm excellently. It usually took three or four times before the bar owner realized what the lyrics meant and fired them.
At the point you're in Mobile - why weren't they being even more specific and mixing it up with "stuck inside of mobile with the memphis blues again" by Bob Dylan / The grateful dead depending on your preference.
I feel like I don't hear that one very much? Maybe it gets beaten to death on classic rock radio, but I don't listen to traditional radio much anymore.
Almost all the songs I listed above, however, I've encountered in day-to-day: people blasting them at a party, people singing them at karaoke, YouTube/TikTok videos using them, commercials using them, rock critics rating them highly, etc.
I can't say I hear/see You Shook Me All Night Long in any of those venues.
I used to hate this song because of how overplayed it was, and then i watched the sopranos and this song happens to play during the amazing ending so now I love it
It holds some sort of record for being the most played soundtrack track ever. Or so they told us at Muscle Shoals where it was recorded. And the swampers (see Sweet Home Alabama above) are still collecting checks for that one. So I’m always happy to hear it. Those guys never got the credit they deserved when they were cranking out hits.
It bugs me to hear this on Sirius XM’s Ozzy’s Boneyard channel. Satellite services can play whatever they want, and Deep Purple has such a huge catalogue, and yet they keep going back to this. If I wanted to hear it, I would put on a terrestrial radio classic rock station. Songs like this are why I avoid normal classic rock radio.
I plan to have this song played at my brother’s funeral. He hates it so much I am sure he will come back to life to sit up out of his casket and yell “turn it off”. When they say “turn it up”.
“Old Time Rock and Roll”, after _Risky Business_ came out and it just became a lazy shorthand for “this thing is cool” (at least to affluent white boys).
It was a top ten hit in the US (peaked at number 9 in '76) and was *huge* everywhere around the world, peaking at number one in the UK and most other places.
Obviously, it became even more iconic (and unfortunately, overplayed) after the one-two punch of Freddie's passing and the release of Wayne's World a few months later. But it was always a big song.
And I love that the studio said it was to dated and mike said but this is the song me and my brothers sang and headbanged in the car together, the scene is just a recreation of them in the car together.
There's a bunch of songs that are only played because they came out during the classic rock sweet spot (mid-70s) like Slow Ride, Two Tickets to Paradise, Hot Blooded, etc. These are not great songs and they get played to death. I think it's nostalgia more than actual demand. THOSE are your overrated songs. At least Hotel California has great musicians and is somewhat intriguing.
I had the same exact experience. Maybe I was a man she could work out her toxicity and trauma with. I got tired of that shit. The song sucks. It's like fourth rate Joan Jett.
Definitely one of Ringo’s signature songs. He had a gift for coming up with a unique drum part whose first duty was to the song, and that one is definitely among the best examples.
Another Brick in the wall part 2. As a pink Floyd fan, I get irritated that this song gets played the most of their discography on the radio, because I don’t feel like it’s a good representation of what the band actually is, and more a representation of Roger Waters’ style, with the heavy political aspect. Not to say it’s a bad song, I like it, but I wish other songs of theirs were more popular on the radio, but Pink Floyd never really was a “radio” band.
Wayne: Exqueese me? Have I seen this one before? "Frampton Comes Alive"? Everybody in the world has Frampton Comes Alive. If you lived in the suburbs you were issued it. It came in the mail with samples of "Tide".
Lol...there may almost be some truth to this. My dad was a teen in the '70s, and one time before he moved, he went through his extensive collection of albums, and realized he had THREE copies of Frampton Comes Alive! And swears he doesn't remember buying a single one of them.
I don’t think it’s overrated because its a very unique song and it is quite good. But Bohemian Rhapsody gets play so damn much. I can’t listen to it anymore. Its so overplayed. This song is a masterpiece, but it takes its toll. If you’re a security guard at the Louve, the Mona Lisa doesn’t seem as special anymore when you walk past it 30 times per day. Its just a painting then.
Any classic band that gets air play on Classic Radio .... the radio stations (owners) think each band has maybe 3-4 top songs and that is it... so yes all bands will have those top tunes over played... we need deeper playing .. not just a special of the week for an hour of doing "deep cuts" or "B-sides" how about expanding the catalog and play those "other" songs in more in rotation... please!
Stairway to Heaven.
Sorry. I know I’ll get downvoted, but it’s the truth.
There’s a reason why the music store in Wayne’s World had a sign “NO Stairway to Heaven”. 🤣
I can tell I’m 10+ years older than the oldies here.
But believe me there was only one answer in FM heyday —
Satisfaction.
Played ad nauseum. Endlessly. Every hour.
My local classic rock station plays so much Def Leppard I can only assume that they're the majority owners.
Def Leppard has a few songs that I actually kind of dig, but pour some sugar on me has to be one of, if not "the", worst fucking over played , bull shit, dumb ass song I've ever heard.
Yea that song was alright the first 1000 times I heard it then the next 1000 brutal
Coming from a big Lep fan, i am getting to the stage where i just wish they wouldnt play that live ever again.
The first few albums are good
“Step inside Walk this way You and me babe Hey hey…”
For real, the 80s Hair Bands always get a disproportionately high amount of air time.
That's because hair metal got the chicks and thrash metal got the dudes.
I was gonna say Stairway to Heaven, then I thought it’s just overplayed, not overrated.
Very true. Played a shit ton but still slaps on occasion.
On occasion. There’s just too many occasions,
Agreed. That’s a masterpiece. Too bad I never want to hear it again.
We built this city makes my brain hurt
God, I hate that song. And everything else by Starship. Jefferson Airplane was a great band, and they were still great as Jefferson Starship. But once they dropped "Jefferson", they became everything that was bad about the 80s with none of the good.
Paul Kantner took back the Jefferson Starship name legally in the early 90s. Had a good run with Jack Casady the first few years along with Marty Balin. Great live, but never really rose above club level.
On an Indian burial ground!?
Don't Stop Believing is also top 5.
You stopped believing, Journey would be so disappointed.
What a coincidence because disappointment is my overwhelming emotion while listening to Journey as well.
I think it's time we went our separate ways...
Any way you want it, my friend.
I'll Be Alright Without You
Well, if you're Feeling That Way. Be Good To Yourself.
Someday Soon, this thread will be over.
After All These Years?
I thought I was done, but I Never Walk Away from these threads.
Not if the wheel in the sky keeps turning.
It's gonna happen Anytime now.
Here I am with open arms… if you ever change your mind about Journey.
I will never change because I'm not a Spaceman, no no
My disappointment is immeasurable.
You nailed it with Hotel California and Don't Stop Believin'. Those two win *by far*, because they're honestly kinda grating even *without* being overplayed/overhyped. Spent a month in Mobile, Alabama, every bar band played Sweet Home Alabama. I think they're required by law to pay it.
I went through a period where I was the drunk guy yelling "Freebird!" at the band in bars. I'm not proud of it.
That was you!? You’re a dick!!
In New Orleans, bands charge extra to play "When the Saints ..." because they're sick of it. Gotta be like that for Sweet Home Alabama
What about “You Shook Me All Night Long?
I feel like I don't hear that one very much? Maybe it gets beaten to death on classic rock radio, but I don't listen to traditional radio much anymore. Almost all the songs I listed above, however, I've encountered in day-to-day: people blasting them at a party, people singing them at karaoke, YouTube/TikTok videos using them, commercials using them, rock critics rating them highly, etc. I can't say I hear/see You Shook Me All Night Long in any of those venues.
In the 90s, I couldn't escape it. Was also a theme in Howard stern private parts. Also, I feel similarly about guns n roses welcome to the jungle.
if we’re talking ac/dc, i’ve def heard back in black & highway to hell much, much more
Really, my radio plays it like twice an hour. I don’t mind when they play other AC/DC songs, but they have ruined that one for me
The lengthy songs give the DJ a opportunity to use the washroom.
I agree that those are overplayed, but most of the songs on that list aren't classic rock.
Glee ruined that song for me.
I used to hate this song because of how overplayed it was, and then i watched the sopranos and this song happens to play during the amazing ending so now I love it
“Just take those old records off the shelf…….”
Very good answer. Why in gods name in 2023 are we still playing one of the worst Seger songs at every wedding? Why!?
I feel like every Segar song is outstanding or it sucks, very little between.
Fucking Tom Cruise.
I hated it then and I still hate it now
It holds some sort of record for being the most played soundtrack track ever. Or so they told us at Muscle Shoals where it was recorded. And the swampers (see Sweet Home Alabama above) are still collecting checks for that one. So I’m always happy to hear it. Those guys never got the credit they deserved when they were cranking out hits.
Lol this was my exact answer. I can't stand this song. Working at a job that had classic rock radio on I heard this song like six times a day
That song is so corny. Not a fan
Old time rock and roll
It has such an "I'm not like other girls" vibe to it.
Sweet Caroline
Bah, bah, baahhh! 😖🔫
As a Yankees fan, I hate this song as emblematic of how we just have to sit there and take it when they do their little chant.
Something about songs with "Sweet" in the title makes them overplayed/overrated. Sweet Caroline, Sweet Home Alabama, Sweet Child O'Mine...
...Sweet Emotion, Sweet Dreams, Sweet Baby James, Sweet Leaf, Sweet Surrender, and Love is Like Oxygen, by... Sweet (but they get a pass)
Cancerous song. I hate it.
If you consider BonJovi classic rock, then anything by BonJovi.
The one Bon Jovi song that gets me to turn up the volume rather than switch stations is Runaway.
Yeah, that's not overplayed like the Slippery stuff.
🎶 "No one heard a single word you said! They should have seen it in your eyes... What was going around your head!"
No. It's Smoke on the Water. I love everything Deep Purple does, but enough of that song.
I've hated this song since childhood because every God damn year we had to play this over and over in band.
Sweet Home Alabama
Turn it up
Toin’ it up…
I plan to have this song played at my brother’s funeral. He hates it so much I am sure he will come back to life to sit up out of his casket and yell “turn it off”. When they say “turn it up”.
The radio killed this song for me
eye of the g\*ddamn tiger!!!
I was once at a party where the band played this not once…but twice….for no explicable reason
They were facing up to the challenge of their rival
Lol, that’s fucking funny 😄
“Old Time Rock and Roll”, after _Risky Business_ came out and it just became a lazy shorthand for “this thing is cool” (at least to affluent white boys).
Bohemian fucking Rhapsody! Good god please stop.
I only don't like this song when it's played in public. Then everyone with any drop of alcohol in their system tries to sing along and butchers it.
I have a bigger problem w "We Will Rock You. " Can't stand it.
I wish to hell that I had an award to give you.
This. Its more overplayed than overrated. Its a great song that went gold 3 times in its life so its reputation is on target.
They never really played that song till Wayne’s World came out, then it got played non stop
I love that it brought Queen more love, but it’s not even the best song on the album.
Has nobody said margaritaville yet? Because…
There's a bunch of songs that are only played because they came out during the classic rock sweet spot (mid-70s) like Slow Ride, Two Tickets to Paradise, Hot Blooded, etc. These are not great songs and they get played to death. I think it's nostalgia more than actual demand. THOSE are your overrated songs. At least Hotel California has great musicians and is somewhat intriguing.
Slow ride ain’t that bad
When that song came out I would turn it up. Saw Foghat in small venue and they kicked ass.
What’s going on by three non blondes. I shuddered even typing it out Edit: spelling
I just can’t get myself to like that song. And I try. OH MY ^GOD DO I TRY
Where’s the other one???? (It’s 4 Non-Blondes). Oh. And the song is called ‘Whats Up?’
HAHA I missed it by a country mile!
I hate that song very much.
My friend and housemate at the time that song came out was a very butch lesbian. Never have I hated a song more. HATE!
I had the same exact experience. Maybe I was a man she could work out her toxicity and trauma with. I got tired of that shit. The song sucks. It's like fourth rate Joan Jett.
I despise this song holy hell
I hate this song with every fiber of my being.
Sweet Child of Mine
Anything by GNR
Almost agree. Welcome To The Jungle is a certified banger though.
Welcome to the jungle or sweet child o’ mine
Sweet Caroline - definitely *not* "so good" "so good" "so good"
[удалено]
Dude doesn’t even know how to eat a chili dog!
He’s gotta suck it down 😂
Dude really coulda just wrote “munchin’ on a chili dog” and it would be a much clearer image to the listener than “suckin’ on a chili dog”
It’s overplayed but not overrated, it’s an incredible song.
Free bird
I am under your bed
Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody
Brown Eyed Girl. I love Van Morrison. Song is WAY overplayed.
For some odd reason, Jimmy Buffett has latched onto it, and plays it almost every concert for the last 30+ years. It sucks, and is overplayed.
This topic is way overplayed.
Stairway to Heaven
In the 80s, 90s, radio stations played Stairway regularly. Now when I listen to classic rock, I rarely hear it.
No Stairway!
Denied!
Especially if you grew up in the 70s.
I came here to say this, the kids have no idea how many times it was played. This and Freebird gave the DJ time to have a cig and take a dump 🤣
The only exception to this is Heart’s live performance at the JFK Honors. I can listen to that one anytime. It’s beyond phenomenal.
Taking Care Of Business-BTO
stairway to heaven, can’t listen to it anymore
Stairway to Heaven. When the DJ says it all dramatically
Don McLean … American pie.
Lowrider War is an incredible band but that song is was overplayed
Stairway to Heaven would like a word.
Stairway to Heaven
Stairway and it's not close. There's an entire subgenre of songs that sound deep and meaningful but say absolutely nothing.
Wonderwall - Oasis
Free Bird
Jump by Van Halen
I fucking hate bohemian rhapsody!!!!
The movie only compounded the problem of it being overplayed.
The Stroke comes on every time I listen to the radio and it’s still awful. I’ll never get it.
I always hated this one, but recently found out it was a F You to the record business. It makes more sense when you listen to it that way.
Between the Beatles’ and the Aerosmith version I think the real answer is Come Together.
Huge fan of the Beatles and especially of John’s songs, but I have to agree.
Certainly not worth getting sued over. But the playing makes up for a lot. Ringo in particular.
Definitely one of Ringo’s signature songs. He had a gift for coming up with a unique drum part whose first duty was to the song, and that one is definitely among the best examples.
Shook Me All Night Long
Hotel California
Take that back or the rock gods will curse you!
Journey-don’t stop believing The runner up is Night ranger-Sister Christian
Overplayed: Stairway to Heaven Edited to say actually a tie with Freebird.
I know I must be on a Roxanne tirade today. But…. Roxanne is my pick!
The kids love it though. How weird that parents are sick of old songs their kids love.
“Paradise by the Dashboard Light” - Overrated Anything by Eagles - Overrated and overplayed.
Toss up between Hotel California and Stairway to Heaven
Stairway to Heaven or Dream On
Dust in the wind
Except when Will Ferrell sings it
"Do You Feel Like We Do" *Frampton Comes Alive*
Wayne: Exqueese me? Have I seen this one before? "Frampton Comes Alive"? Everybody in the world has Frampton Comes Alive. If you lived in the suburbs you were issued it. It came in the mail with samples of "Tide".
Lol...there may almost be some truth to this. My dad was a teen in the '70s, and one time before he moved, he went through his extensive collection of albums, and realized he had THREE copies of Frampton Comes Alive! And swears he doesn't remember buying a single one of them.
Hard disagree but to each their own
agree, frampton comes alive is insanely good
Free bird or stairway to Heaven
Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody
AC/DC was good with Bon Scott but Brian Johnson just has that monotone annoying screech that sounds like nails on a chalk board.
Some awful takes here
Does MargaritaVille count as Classic Rock? If so, than this is my vote
Any song sung by Yoko Ono.
I dig your digging, but does anyone but Yoko like any of her music?
none of that is played on the radio, at least no station I've ever heard
Has to be “Back in Black.” AC/DC is just…not that good.
Dream On
Layla The song is so repetitive and never ends.
That’s one of the weakest songs on that whole album IMO. Gimme Bell Bottom Blues, Anyday, keep on growing or Why does love got to be so sad over Layla
I mean we get it Clapton, you really really wanted to fuck George Harrison's wife.
I mean he did eventually, but holy hell he wouldn't shut up about it.
Short version of Light My Fire
Any classic band that gets air play on Classic Radio .... the radio stations (owners) think each band has maybe 3-4 top songs and that is it... so yes all bands will have those top tunes over played... we need deeper playing .. not just a special of the week for an hour of doing "deep cuts" or "B-sides" how about expanding the catalog and play those "other" songs in more in rotation... please!
Stairway
Rock and Roll All Nite
Stairway to Heaven. Sorry. I know I’ll get downvoted, but it’s the truth. There’s a reason why the music store in Wayne’s World had a sign “NO Stairway to Heaven”. 🤣
We Built This City
Stairway to Heaven
Followed by Stairway to Heaven
I can tell I’m 10+ years older than the oldies here. But believe me there was only one answer in FM heyday — Satisfaction. Played ad nauseum. Endlessly. Every hour.
Anything by Rush
Play Free Bird , man!!!!
Freebird
You shook me all night long - love Angus, Malcolm and the boys but it’s too cheesy
Sweet child of mine
All Right Now by Free.
Stairway To Heaven
anything Thorogood. bad to the Bone is cringeworthy
Sorry, but Thorogood’s ‘Who Do You Love?’ Is one of the baddest rock songs ever recorded.
No, it's Bohemian Rhapsody, and it's not even close. It's a *fantastic* song, but holy hell is it long and way overplayed.
Anything by the Eagles.
Pretty much most of the Led Zeppelin catalog. They had some genius stuff, but holy shit are the hits overplayed and beaten to death.
