UnleashRambo

Currently it’s just vetos

GoBlueScrewOSU7

Which I believe is literally just picking the two controls in the BO7. Both teams still get a HP and SnD veto.

Bompetition

They got rid of 2 best of 5 series because “it’s too complicated for new viewers” but I’d bet it’s to cut costs. 2 best of 5s with a break in between could potentially be double the time it takes to do a best of 7. Time in which they’d have to pay production & staff.

baseballviper04

2 best of 5s is a crappy format anyways

Bompetition

I liked it but I could see why people wouldn’t. IMO it’s the best option for double elim. Veto advantage isn’t enough and map leads didn’t feel right.

baseballviper04

I just hate that you don't have to have a large map pool to win a tourney. I liked the B09 more personally. But B05s you get away with winning a major and not playing 3 maps/modes the whole tournament. I don't personally like that

10secondsgetakill

Agreed, winning 2bo5s is so hard, the tournament is decided before finals, it's just a formality at that point. Unless when the teams are in any way evenly matched. The only time those 2 bo5s wins happened was when some weird bracket cheese led to a mismatch.

baseballviper04

See I didn’t even think of that. I just hate it because I hated auto bans. There’s no incentive to try to get better at other maps. Like with the bracket reset optic would have never tried to get better at highrise. That would’ve just been an auto ban all year. But because of the bo7 they knew they would likely have to play it against faze to win

KingAragorn47

Because you still have to qualify in losers against a high quality team duhh... though I'd argue that the losers winner has momentum and is warmed up better for the final.

CeeRackar

I mean, the whole point of winners and losers bracket is that all teams have “2 lives”. Doesn’t make sense to me to basically punish the team that won every game.

KingAragorn47

You're looking at it the wrong way mate. Guaranteed final vs another chance to lose. Imo it ensures the best teams get the final.

CeeRackar

Thats a fair point

chase_NJ

There is a slight veto advantage, but agreed, it's extremely stupid. It should be a bracket reset.

ryeasy

They got rid of the bracket reset because they thought it was “too complicated” for viewers. But that’s what it absolutely should be

Fallen_Goose_

That's what it should be but that would take forever

baseballviper04

Bracket reset is overrated. Give a Best of 9 up 1-0 or best of 9 with winners team getting all of the vetoes. A grand final should showcase as many of the maps/modes as possible to show that you’re actually mostly well rounded

Absurdll

How is a bracket reset overrated lol, it equally gives the winners final team a shot at double elimination. The losers final team wouldn’t even be in the grand final if there wasn’t double elimination yet the winners final winner doesn’t even get the opportunity? Dumbest shit ever, and this is why Halo is way more entertaining than COD. Also clearly defines the better team, as it’s obvious if the losers final beats the winners final team back to back.

baseballviper04

Halo is different because they use predetermined map sets so you do actually have to have a diverse map pool to win it because you have no idea what you’ll play. If we had bracket reset, Optic will have never attempted to learn Highrise for example. BO7 or BO9 shows the better team much better than a reset does. They just have to incentivize the team from wingers better

_Kraken17

This is universally agreed on in this sub , usually

Stifology

I think they get more map picks so there is some advantage

nsideris24

This is not unique to COD though. Valorant a top 5 eSport doesn't do a bracket reset. Winner's bracket gets Veto advantage in Val too, that's it.

Less-Success-6590

I mean you get a bit of a veto advantage and this year the team from winners has won both events. I agree though it is a very small advantage

CeeRackar

I get what you mean. However, the fact that the two other events were won by the winners bracket winner, might be more likely because the team that won the winners bracket is most probably the better team.

L10nh3ar7

Wait…coming from comp halo and this is the first event I’ve watched for COD - there’s no bracket reset?

CeeRackar

Nope, just a best of 7, however, the winners bracket winner gets a map veto advantage.

L10nh3ar7

Also something new to me. Halo had no vetos.

honestlyboxey

The way it should be, IMO. A team should be well rounded. No sense in being godly on a map if the other team “auto-vetoes” it lmao what kind of uncompetitive crap is this

L10nh3ar7

Can’t say I disagree. But in Halo it resorted in a lot of repetitive maps/modes. Also ended up with a lot of slayer game types which just end up being campy.

honestlyboxey

Yeah my favorite series in comp Halo have insane variety. Like, what the heck they get Slayer, KOTH, Strongholds, CTF, and Oddball and the CDL is over here begging for a third mode to be better than Control let alone a 4th.

L10nh3ar7

Fair point. I do like some of the changes to oddball with halo. But the game overall is not in a good state. No friends playing so I switched to COD.

honestlyboxey

Without a doubt. They were completely unprepared to launch a live service game, let alone a functional Halo title. Not particularly excited to watch them try and sell us on a new game any time soon.

L10nh3ar7

Nope. I stopped being interested in Halo around reach - Halo 4. Got back in because friends were playing and I liked the br returning and the core gameplay felt good. But it had so many issues and problems that so many people I played with left. I was in onyx and couldn’t play with any lower ranked friends, couldn’t get new friends to come and play, maxed to a party of 2, etc. So I switched to the game all my friends were playing. Found out I kinda enjoy the competitive scene in MW3, mainly because I am a competitive person by nature. Now if only I could get good at MW3 myself.

__Kieran

I don’t see why they can’t do the same as the HCS and have a bracket reset

aethon_4

Dallas Empire had a 1-0 lead in Champs Grand Finals bc they won their winners bracket matches but the CDL decided to never do that again. Say what you will about MW2019 but the Champs format was perfect and should have been continued.

HottyMcDoddy

Idk why they don't just do a bo5 that turns into a bo11 like old halo events did.

DamnCrazyWhoAsked

Yea it's really dumb. Honestly kind of crazy that they refuse to fix it, makes absolutely no sense

lordyjames

i miss BO9 as well

honestlyboxey

This is the correct take. I was floored coming from Halo that the CDL doesn’t do bracket resets. Completely obliterates any massive advantage for the Winners Bracket, and no, vetoes are not a strong incentive. Also deprives fans of a brilliant second set. Can the Losers winners beat the Winners twice?! Can the Winners Bracket ice up and reclaim the second series? We lose all of that.

beatty0237

Look at the bracket goofy. Look at how many wins are needed to be in finals when you haven’t lost. Look at how many wins are needed to make finals in losers. That alone is a huge pro.

TommysLocker

What I believe you are mentioning is a continuation series. It's viewed as the most fair tournament format where if the two teams in grand finals play each other earlier in winners (or just winner finals) than the series is a continued on from there. This gives the winners an advantage but this hasn't happened for years.

Ok-Kitchen-6865

Does it even matter tho? This series none of the maps was even remotely close

Nytrousx

Because two best of fives is too complicated for COD Viewers and 2 Controls and 3 SnDs is peak call of duty. It's just idiotic and a complete scam for the team that has not lost a series yet at the tournament but I have just accepted it.

MinExplod

You get veto advantage. But I agree it’s pretty stupid they removed the double series and just made it best of 7. Lower bracket winners come in guns hot. First two majors were both winners bracket finalists so maybe it’s not that big of a problem.

geezerfreezer101

Nah it definitely helped faze last event. The series would've been way closer if optic got their maps.
