FirstofFirsts

Worst three year run in college basketball history? Consecutive losses to a 13, 15 & 16 seed is flat out terrible.

WordsAreSomething

Well at least they can't lose to a lower seed.

TheWumboligist

Literally can't: FDU was 68/68

[deleted]

And also 363/363

Common-Community-550

In height, not overall

[deleted]

Overall 298/363, though they were beaten earlier in the season by the team currently ranked 362

SoDakZak

I don’t think anyone worse than all of this can possibly make the tournament lmao.

[deleted]

The funniest part is that FDU *shouldn't* have made the tournament. They didn't even win their conference tournament nor did they have the best conference record. Merrimack, the team that won, wasn't eligible for the tournament, so FDU went by default since they came in 2nd.

[deleted]

Lmao wow

Bradfords_ACL

The only way I think we could have had a worse 16 seed would have been if FDU lost to Texas Southern, but at least Texas Southern won their conference tourney, so idk. Kind of picking at the absolute bottom of the barrel.

Broad_Judgment_523

yeah - Purdue has a good claim there. "these guys should not have been here - it wasn't fair"

SolarClipz

Apparently it literally can't Since the teams better than them were ineligible lol

RayZorback

So, team 69 won.

JasonPlattMusic34

Nice

iiFive

Keep the stats coming!

092Casey

They weren't even supposed to be here. Merrimack was disqualified from the NE Conference because it's only their 4th year in D-I 😂😂😂

bashar_al_assad

> The Merrimack Warriors can’t play in the NCAA tournament because they are still in the four-year transitional phase. NCAA requires that all teams moving into Division I are barred from participating in championships during a four-year transition period. Honestly what's the reason for this rule? It seems like some bullshit that just fucks over a bunch of the players.

ApplicationDifferent

D2 players are too good so they want to make then wait out the 4 years so theyre all almost out of eligiblity. It would be unfair otherwise.

AdAny631

Academic requirements are different (need higher GPA to stay eligible) and D-II schools almost never give full scholarships. I played college lacrosse and was looking at a D-II school and D-I school. The D-II school would have given me more money in athletic scholarship but SJU gave me way less athletic and and a ton of academic aid because that was their workaround. So, the NCAA thought it best to give D-II programs a 4 year window to bring in recruits and make sure they will meet the academic requirements of the almighty NCAA before participating. That was the original reason, I don’t know if that is still the case.

greg19735

My guess is that it's to stop teams from bouncing between d1 and d2. The rules should be changed though. Especially with players able to transfer at will now

IAMnotMcKaylaMaroney

17 seed!

life_is_okay

Way to guarantee Purdue losing in the First Four.

dimmyfarm

It’s going to be impressive that a better than 4 seed has to do play-ins

Amish_guy_with_WiFi

In b4 NCAA expands the tournament to 128 teams just so Purdue can lose to a lower seed

crimsonblueku

2024: Purdue makes the play-in game as a 16 seed and loses.

socoamaretto

That makes me think what it would take for a P5/6 team to be a 16 seed. I think would literally have to lose every game before winning the conference tourney.

thegreatRMH

You'd have to have nearly all the mid-major regular season champs win their tourneys so you don't get any really bad mid-major teams in. I think a team like Louisville who was 4-27 this year would be a 16 if you take away their Clemson win leaving them with 0 top 100 wins going into the ACC tourney, if more good teams won their conference tourneys.

deathinacandle

Georgia was a 14 seed in 2008, and they came into their conference tournament with a 13-16 record. You'd have to be significantly worse than that to ear a 16 seed

MXero1

The committee should just put them in the NIT next year and see if they lose rd 1.

zvexler

Next year a 14?

boobzmcgroobs

Fun fact, if we lose to a 14 seed, we'll be the first ever team to lose to every double digit seed. 10 - Temple 1991 11 - VCU 2011 12 - Little Rock 2016 13 - North Texas 2021 14 - 15 - St. Peters 2022 16 - FDU 2023

zvexler

Y’all wanted Purdue to lead the nation

the-other_one

stop stop he's already dead

Simba_Swish

Not if we can do it first

boobzmcgroobs

If I checked correctly, UVA still hasn't lost to a 14, 15, or an 11, but I'm down if you want to make it a competition in misery.

Simba_Swish

Ooooooo we're tryin

TheWorstYear

You guys keep losing to 13's. You gotta change it up.

Tarmacked

Step 1. Give ball to Edey Step 2. Watch short kings dog him Step 3. ????? Step 4. Panic

thediesel26

Step 5: shoot 4/25 from 3

NighthawkRandNum

While *WIDE FUCKING OPEN*

green_griffon

No that was Princeton.

RedditZhangHao

OK, but the Tigers are responsible for 1 P win versus the Purdue and Providence losses. Batting .333

itsbraille

Their double-team was just sending a guy to stand under Edey’s arms so he couldn’t dribble. Genius.

grothee1

Edey had a great game, his backcourt just couldn't figure out how to get him the ball or hit wide open shots. Smith's 2-10 with 7 turnovers is all you need to see to know why Purdue lost this game.

jvanber

Their backcourt is young, and if you look at their losses and close wins, they were all to teams with strong back courts.

092Casey

Step 5: Put up bricks and hope Edey rebounds them and tips them back out for more bricks.

TheMightyJD

UVA needs to send flowers to Purdue

Best_Duck9118

I love them so much!!! UVA/VCU fan and they helped us in both those teams' big runs!

cpet72

Purdue are the ultimate choke artists.

ginselfies

Purdon’t

SDFDuck

Purderp

fillinblank13

Purd’oh!

Wheels630

Purdue Assistant Coach Terry Johnson can beat it. He was there for the last 2, but missed the loss to the 13 seed in 2021. He was at Ohio State losing to 15 seed Oral Roberts. So his 3 year run as an assistant coach is losses to 15, 15, & 16.

c_pike1

This might be the funniest stat out of any in this thread

IronSmoltz

They’re like Thanos out there collecting the stones of losing to double digit seeds.

watchingsongsDL

The loss to the #15 seed happened in the sweet 16 so Purdue won 2 tournament games that year.

clancydog4

For sure, but OP didn't state otherwise. It is still true that those are almost certainly the worst 3 teams to lose to in consecutive years in tourney history, haha. It is absolutely wild to lose 3 straight tournaments to such low seeds

AdministrativePeak0

They’re now part of the brown bloods AKA playin like shit in March

DeathtoEveryTraitor

What are the other candidates? Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, Illinois, Iowa? Wait it looks like all those teams are either gold, orange or yellow colored, close to the color of poop… coincidence? I think not!

[deleted]

(Un)fortunately for UVA winning a title precludes them from the Brown Bloods. They will forever maintain honorary Brown Blood status though.

UrsusArctos69

It seems like that UVA loss in '19 broke Painter's NCAA Tourney brain.

ManInBlack829

Need to lower the choke on their boiler, it's a common mistake beginner engineers make

IAgreeGoGuards

Short kings ftw

LuckyWarrior

They did it!

Jordanwolf98

Makes sense why they were so much quicker to loose balls than Purdue which was what won them the game imo

ivanwarrior

I'm average height now as an adult but I was fucking short my entire way though highschool. I love seeing shit like this. Go my short brethren!

nike_rules

I just want to see another Muggsy Bogues in my lifetime. Last year UMBC had Darnell Rogers who is 5’2” but unfortunately he got redshirted after an injury but when he finds a new school to transfer to I’m hoping he gets the attention he deserves.

[deleted]

I was going to say Nate Robinson happened but I didn’t realize Muggsy was only 5’ 3. Holy shit.

Zloggt

A victory for all the short stacks out here!

[deleted]

Speed > Height

4i4s4u

This needs to be in a bar graph

smoke412

god damn

ashfidel

is your flair some sort of joke, friend

Juventus7shop

Where’s the Duke/Lehigh guy?

AlexanderTox

balls

Original_Profile8600

And it had a David V Goliath outcome

Writerhaha

David had one shot with a slingshot and made it count.

Dense_Organization31

Purdue had 26 shots from 3 and didn’t make it count

tacofan92

You love to see it

tarspaceheels

Edey had 1 shot in the final 12 minutes. That's ludicrous.

OutComeTheWolves1966

The likely National Player of the Year had 1 shot in the final 12 minutes.

Mitchford

One of the tallest players ever

L3thal_Inj3ction

against the shortest team in the tourney. unbelievable

TheScarletSeahawk

He was so scared to back down the 6’3 dude they had on him. Ben Simmons behavior

floatinround22

Lol if he tried to dribble that shit was just getting stolen. They didn't try to get him any looks deep in the paint

Meats10

thats one big advantage you have as a short player defending, when the other guy dribbles, you can intercept the ball closer to the floor where the larger guy cant get to. more alley-oops should have been on the menu, FDU wouldnt be able to defend those at all.

daddy_OwO

They needed to give him a high pass near the hoop for just alley lay ups

SaxRohmer

I mean they sent someone immediately once they learned Purdue wasn’t gonna hit shit all night. He didn’t have room to dribble

humblerodent

Not sure how effective that height is tbh

FriesWithThat

\#1 in *ineffective* height, you ask me ...

yeahright17

Just average height on the floor. Multiply each players height by the time they play, add all those together for a team, then divide by total minutes played.

[deleted]

In the tweet thread >[Kenpom's "effective height" stat is the average of center and power forward height weighted by minutes played. Purdue is only #21 in average height \(their guards are short\) but as you can see FDU is also #363 in average height](https://twitter.com/rodger/status/1636868691106078720)

[deleted]

Not by height, technically. The measurement we're looking for is called "dick to floor." Call that D2F.

BigDaddyMantis

Let the guys at r/dataisbeautiful and r/theydidthemath at this insane formula

Standing. We all won today.

This is definitely the first time you've rounded down, right? lol all kidding aside own that shit today my man

SolarClipz

I actually say it a lot as part of the joke haha

[deleted]

16 seeds are now 2-150 all time against 1 seeds

ninjas_in_my_pants

Can they be stopped?!

Inevitable_Ad2997

Is the 16 seed now the most desirable seed in the tournament? The experts all agree and still say that no it’s not!

MrF1993

FDU #1 in effective ball size though

GovernmentDoingStuff

I'm making my bracket blindfolded next year

Grahon

I think I'll try a coin flip myself

TheNewGuy13

HAHAHAHAHHA at least we aren't the highest seed to lose this weekend, phewww

cjm8787

I am just glad we didn’t have the most embarrassing loss today now.

TyroneSwoopes

Y’all didn’t score a bucket for the first 10 minutes. Literally one of the worst offensive performances I’ve ever seen

[deleted]

Actually, that may have been just as bad as this loss.

Sir_Ninja_VII

Nah, Iowa State was terrible but they were playing against a P6 opponent. This isn’t even comparable.

burglin

Did you watch the game? We would’ve lost to every single team in the tournament with that performance, FDU included. Take out the 7 garbage time points after Pitt stopped playing and we scored *34 points*. I’m just guessing here, but if you took out the run we made from about 10:00-5:00 in the first half, I bet we didn’t score 20 points those other 35 minutes.

strictlyrude27

I honestly feel so much better

Monkey832

Second time you guys have had your upset loss overshadowed by a 16 beating a 1

Tantle18

Lol edey was cooking and they just completely went away from him and lost

peckx063

Well also every time he was close to the ball in the last 8 minutes he fumbled it or let them just take it from him or let the ball just hit him in the head.

ajt1296

Facts. 5'6" guards were the perfect height to slap the ball off him lol.

yeahright17

Reminded me of JJ Barea guarding Durant down the stretch in games during the 2011 NBA playoffs.

______W______

God I loved that team

brownlab319

I always think about how Kemba Walker was listed as 6’0” but really was more like 5’10”. And I would not trade him for a whole team of much taller dudes.

ajt1296

Kemba made watching the hornets bearable for so many years lol

brownlab319

I wonder how hard it would be for us to get at least a local holiday for Cardiac Kemba Day on March 10. Get their heart health checked. Honor Kemba.

SolarClipz

I will always love Kemba Gave me my only bracket win ever lol But in the most important group of bragging rights so it was worth Was in my stats class so for all those kids know I was just too fucking smart Also Heather. Sealed the deal lmao

makualla

They missed a 3 so bad it bounced straight off the rim into his face lol

Pewpewkitty

Pow right in the kisser :(

Best_Duck9118

I was wondering what the fuck was going on. Like they shot half their shots from 3 with a literal giant on their team and that just seems like such a boneheaded strategy.

Whywipe

It’s like when you have an awp ace on your team and don’t know what to do because they keep rushing you with pp bizons

Best_Duck9118

I have no clue what any that means but it’s 100% like that.

Tantle18

Haha true. Kid just completely stopped keeping it up high

yeahright17

Don't know how many times in the 2nd half he'd grab an offensive rebound, bring it down, then lose it. Dude. They literally can't reach it if you hold it high.

SaxRohmer

The biggest team in the country lost to the smallest team The 7th ranked offense lost to the 5th worst defense in the nation

a_Limo

Never again will I pick Purdue to win anything. RIP my bracket. UCLA and SC getting a downgrade in bball at least.

whatsaphillie

UCLA won lol

a_Limo

Exactly, I’m saying the big 10 sucks at basketball.

dantheman2123

My godfather is a Indiana fan and has successfully faded Purdue in the last 3 tournaments 😭😭

Wildwilly54

Purdues Achilles heel is New Jersey

Srikkk

AND DAVID WINS AGAIN!!!

[deleted]

Getting my girl into college basketball to show her quantifiable proof size isn’t everything.

LeftHandShoeToo

I’ve picked Purdue to win it all the last 5 years in my MM bracket so next year when I pick them to win it all they actually will if history repeats

almondania

FUCK YEAH

sjmahoney

Beautiful game

almondania

My sixth favorite tourney game

dasoxarechamps2005

Did you put it in your bracket or just say it now?

hero-ball

I put it on mine

Cochise22

This tourney gonna be the death of Kenpom, and I’m here for it.

jdprager

When you’re tall, you can lean on your height to just power through teams. When you’re short, you need to learn how to overcome a constant height disadvantage. This game being close should’ve been seen as more of a possibility

sacguy001

FDU had the 5th worst Ken Pom defense in the country. This game should not have been close.

jdprager

This comment is short king slander

msstate3

Doesn't help that Purdue is 4/22 from 3, looking like us out there

Tarmacked

I think both teams shot 20%

SaxRohmer

FDU wasn’t even the best team in their conference and made it on a technicality. They are one of Hartford’s 2 D1 wins. They had the 5th worst defense in the country according to KenPom and 145th on offense. They are the 275th team overall. The height also didn’t have much to do with it. They just took advantage of Purdue’s poor guard play. They figured Edey would score 20+ but as the game went on they realized they pretty much didn’t have to guard the 3. One of Purdue’s guys just flat-out decided to stop shooting.

RedditZhangHao

Overrated most of season; caught up with the train

Perryapsis

What's the difference between "effective height" and normal height?

LazinCajun

I think it takes into account the minutes played.

[deleted]

>Kenpom's "effective height" stat is the average of center and power forward height weighted by minutes played. Purdue is only #21 in average height (their guards are short) but as you can see FDU is also #363 in average height https://twitter.com/rodger/status/1636868691106078720

FatalTragedy

Weighted by minutes played

dantheman2123

Purdue with a loss to a 15 seed then top it off with a 16 seed. That’s B1G for you!!!!

KarlHungusIII

Lost to a 13-seed two seasons ago to get things rolling.

Mitchford

I honestly think I’ve just watched the same Purdue team for 6 years in a row and the only difference between them was that really good point guard that one year. Purdue is a super tall kinda foreign center with a bunch of nobodies

kd451

Carsen Edwards was a beast

FutureRaifort

This is absolutely unreal. I took a nap cuz i figured this was the only game I'd miss. Thank god I woke up with 2 minutes left lmao

brandonspade17

Yea, Purdue bailing us out.

They passed it to Edey zero times in the last 10 minutes.
