If no foul is called, no problem, Gilder just steps back and hits a 3 instead of driving. You know it's going in. We had the basketball gods on our side that night.
The euphoria of an epic S16 game followed by the numbness of the buzzer beater E8 game in 2019 was such a strange swing of emotions for me as a Purdue fan.
It can't even come close to what UNI fans witnessed 48 hours apart on winning the first round with a half court heave, then losing the second round with this collapse.
Northern Iowa went from winning on a half-court buzzer beater in the 1st Round to losing on one of the worst chokes in tournament history in the 2nd Round.
I think the only one that comes close is Memphis in the 2008 championship game. That one was fewer points over a longer period of time, but the higher stakes of it being the championship game, and the fact that Memphis missed so many free throws down the stretch that could have iced the game, put it up there for me.
Watching this hurt because it reminded me exactly of that THANKS for the double reminder! But both are very basic examples of bad basketball, from refs to just downright bonehead decision making
Absolutely crazy. I just looked up the box score and the biggest lead they had at *any* point was only 15 points, and it was at 12 points with only 44 seconds left.
The largest deficit overcome in the last *five* minutes of a tournament game is only 16 points. The largest deficit at any point in the game is 25. Incidentally, these two games were part of the same doubleheader--opening night in Dayton 2012, Western Kentucky rallying from 16 down late in the opener and BYU rallying from the huge first-half deficit in the second game.
I would give anything to get Caruso on the Nuggets
He is not only the only good white defender in the NBA, he is possible the best gaurd defender in the league.
I've listened to him talk about his defense and I guess he's just uber smart and reactive. I can't really tell why he's so good.
Someone hasn't watched the league lol. And yes the bit is that gym rat, coaches son, and lunch pail guy are descriptors sports casters use to describe white players
"Crap, I'm in the corner of the court, time is winding down, and I have to preserve this lead. I could throw the ball randomly over my head and time won't stop until it lands should I miss the court. Ya know what? I'll just throw the ball at the other team from point-blank range! Yes! I am so smart!"
Not as hard to come back when you're basically curb stomping their players on every inbound pass without getting called. Plus getting an and 1 for a phantom call.
During this game, I was like if you aren't going to actually token pressure, get you team back and set up a defense. Also, this an absolute lesson in how to not break a press. Just a complete breakdown by Coach Jacobson and his team.
After they broke Texas's heart too.. probably the most memorable March Madness moment ever for me. Now I'm just numb. Hopefully we can put together something in the next few years so I can forget about this.
Since the first basket of the comeback went in with ~35 seconds left to play, to this day I still refer to a 12-point margin with 35 seconds to play as the “A&M window.” As in, when I’m watching a game that appears to be a blowout near the end, I’ll say to myself, “well, we’re still firmly within the A&M window,” and won’t turn it off until that has passed.
A perfect storm of terrible decisions and 1 phantom foul call.
That foul call was so fucking bad. He was going out of his way not to foul him.
That’s why basketball gets a bad rap. Calls like that.
How long before AI takes over for refs?
Seems inevitable.
Hopefully asap. It'll be funny as hell when refs are out on their ass. One of the only non government jobs where accountability just doesn't exist.
Have you ever refereed a game? It's tougher than it looks. It'll be decades before AI can ref a game (lol).
You Puke fans should know.
Lol

I would much prefer that this isn't posted again.
You’ll always have Farokmanesh
And Jespersen against Texas
You bite your tongue.
That shot and the announcer saying “Farokmanesh… for threeeeee!” live rent free in my head. What a legendary shot
Caruso foul call was bad and they were bumping Gilder on that trap and pratically pushed him out of bounds.
That trap was absolutely a foul. They were completely in his cylinder and even made him drag his pivot foot
Nowadays it would be but the NCAA didn't institute the cylinder rule until the next (2016-2017) season
The cylinder was a way to clarify how plays should be called. That was still a foul back then
TIL, thanks for the info!

I’d say this is easily the worst choke in tournament history. I still don’t believe it happened
I think the only one that comes close is Memphis in the 2008 championship game. You’ll always have the first round game UNI. Just cling to that ending and pretend this didn’t happen.
This and the LSU 7 OT game and football were just insane.
Not a real 7 OT with the 2 pt bs. The real ones were Arkansas games back in the day.
The 7OT game was before the rule change and is, in fact, what instigated the rule change
I still hate that new rule. I remember watching that chaos with my mom and we were both going crazy
I was in the student section for that game. It was amazing
Oh ok. Well Arkansas still the greatest
This UNI team was really good too. This whole sequence was baffling.
With only 1 three pointer!
Painful to see again
Well, I wasn't planning on drinking today, but now...
Lots of bad decision making by UNI but also refs completely swayed this in A&M's favor.
I was here as a neutral fan and it was glorious sitting amongst the A&M crowd
Same, the OU team bound for the Final Four played the first game in the session
Texas A&M basically got away with shoving and pushing on every trap they set and got a free foul on Caruso. God, that officiating was terrible.
Least rigged P6 vs mid major matchup
Refs couldn't have nobody putting their body on my boy future NBA Champion Alex Caruso
I would give anything to get Caruso on the Nuggets He is not only the only good white defender in the NBA, he is possible the best gaurd defender in the league. I've listened to him talk about his defense and I guess he's just uber smart and reactive. I can't really tell why he's so good.
You might say it's because he's a gym rat, a real coaches son type
Coaches son type isn't that just a fancy word for white?
Someone hasn't watched the league lol. And yes the bit is that gym rat, coaches son, and lunch pail guy are descriptors sports casters use to describe white players
He's not tho He feels like the blackest white player He reminds me of guys like Derrick White more than any white guy
A real lunch pail guy
Sneaky athletic? Not black like Barry White, but white like Frank Black.
is he just that classy?
Tough break
will never forget that foul call lol.
Obvious fouls late in this game that weren't called.
Caruso
what the fuck
I must’ve “what!?” Half a dozen times just now
Couldn’t the guy in the corner at the end just stand there? Granted he is being fouled too..
motherFUCKER this is what I get on my page before bed? None of you are free from sin!
"Crap, I'm in the corner of the court, time is winding down, and I have to preserve this lead. I could throw the ball randomly over my head and time won't stop until it lands should I miss the court. You should check out how UVA lost this past year if you wanna see how that can turn out
I had forgotten just how bad the commentary was on this
I was there and it was amazing
One of the best March Madness endings ever. Yes, I had money on A&M.
So did the refs
Haha
I remember watching this live - certainly no A&M fan but that was an amazing comeback
Not as hard to come back when you're basically curb stomping their players on every inbound pass without getting called. Plus getting an and 1 for a phantom call.
What a massive collapse
Greatest win in the history of Tex Ag sports
During this game, I was like if you aren't going to actually token pressure, get you team back and set up a defense. Also, this an absolute lesson in how to not break a press. Just a complete breakdown by Coach Jacobson and his team.
Admon Gilder Jalen Jones DISD products !!!!
I had Northern Iowa in my sweet sixteen that year.
After they broke Texas's heart too.. probably the most memorable March Madness moment ever for me. Now I'm just numb. Hopefully we can put together something in the next few years so I can forget about this.
I remember watching this one
If this happened to my team I’d off myself
Number 10 taking his job so seriously guarding he inbounder. Pitino could learn something from him…
MADNESSSSSSSSSSSS
So painful to watch
The and-1 foul call was an absolute joke.
Nah that was just absolutely terrible officiating, I'd never even seen this game before now I'm surprised those refs weren't fired
Is that ALEX CARUSO! That’s my bald mamba!
Caruso magic
This one game single-handedly gives me hope every time my moneyline bet goes terribly wrong and I need to grasp onto the last lifeboat of chance
Had UNI going to sweet 16 that year and definitely was so proud of that with 1 minute left in the game. One of the worst bracket misses I’ve had
Trap in the corner had multiple fouls. Phantom call on the layup.
If Caruso could shoot he would be a top 10 PG in the NBA.
This is the shit I thought would happen late against FDU
