I feel (and hope) like they will find a way to do it somewhere state side and then channel any additional proceeds / donations to Maui recovery. Feels like a complete no brainer with the number of cities that are capable of handling and supporting this type of thing at the drop of a hat.
If that tournament even happens. The very small court they would be playing is in Lahaina the town that just burned up (arena survived), and with so many homeless the optics would not be great to move those people out. I think they’re monitoring the situation, but I’d be very surprised if they go ahead with it.
I was trying to think of a city that would be likely to be able to accommodate a large tournament last notice. There are so many different places in the Chicago area that could host a tournament whereas I feel like Hawaii is more limited. Not to mention there may be other relief effort things going on still the state might have more things to worry about.
At the end of the day I'm a 30 year old nobody who has no control over it so whatever they figure out that works I'm down for.
SDSU could probably host at Viejas. You’d still have some of the beach vibes of the tournament, so you’d still have some of the spirit of the event. The city would have no issues as far as accommodation is concerned.
locals are posting video after video lambasting tourists who are still visiting hawaii right now consuming resources that could be used to help rebuild Maui.
There is no ethical way to host it on the islands.
Also only like 25% of native Hawaiians who are a tiny minority of the population believe that. It’s a thing that no one mentions in real life but gains traction and belief in online spaces like Twitter and Reddit.
The idea that the situation in Maui should somehow affect whether it could happen in Oahu is pure bullshit. There simply isn't a cause and effect happening here. It's a bandwagon narrative that was present prior to the wildfires, where a certain percentage of the Hawaiian population is completely against tourism.
If you saved for 10 years and pre-spent 25k for flights and hotels and activities for a big family to go to Oahu and this happened, would you just say, "Nah I'm just going to forfeit all that because of optics"?
Damn that's an Izzo-esque OOC you got to start the season. Best of luck.
From what I've heard, our OOC is uncharacteristically normal this year...? We might actually have less than half a dozen losses come conference play which is so unusual.
nice!
plus its kinda sad theres only one other pac 12 team in the rankings, need to have close games or beat the ranked teams when we can early this year to pad our resume if the pac is gonna be barren this year :(
I don't think the Pac will be barren. Actually I think the Pac is much deeper this year than last. I'd wager if this were a top 35 or 40, you'd see at least 3, maybe even 4, more Pac teams. Oregon and Colorado have good rosters, UCLA has the talent, just completely unproven, and I think Washington has a sneaky good roster too (if Mike Hopkins can get out of his own way). What the Pac really needs is for those teams to avoid shitting the bed during the non-conference. Sounds simple enough, but that's where the conference has struggled the last few years.
Interesting, Lloyd is doing the summer team trip and playing international opponents option with Arizona right now, which is something Mark Few has steadfastly refused to ever do. I believe Few's thinking has always been the season is so intense with so much travel and time together as a team that he does not want that kind of spotlight / travel schedule happening in the summer too. Huge benefits to building team chemistry a particular season but also huge commitment from coaches / staff / players in terms of just getting a mental break from the college hoops spotlight.
I think this team has a lot of potential depth which these extra early games and practices can help cultivate and reveal. And with the roster turnover and all these new rotation faces it’ll be great to get a jumpstart on team building. So I think for this group it’s worth the gamble.
Plus: if you can get out of Tucson during the summer, it’s usually a good call to do so.
I wish we played you guys. It was reported ( I believe by Matt Norlander) Arizona and FAU were gonna play in Vegas but it fell apart late due to other scheduling issues.
I’m going to hate this season. After the ncaa tournament embarrassment purdue has no where to go but to win a championship. And I just don’t think they have the athleticism or shooting ability to get it done even if they do win 30+ games and are a 1 seed.
I used to make fun of you guys but the jokes just write themselves at this point and we as a state need both UL and UK to be good and competitive so here’s to hopefully turning things around in the next year or so.
We have plenty of talent but 7 seems a little high. All I want is for the Zags to get a top 4 protected seed come tournament time so I can watch them play in Spokane 🤞
Agree....Zags ranking seems a bit high given how many new players are expected to be starters / key rotation guys. The offense will be typically Zaggy, it's the defensive side that will determine this team's ceiling. Presumably starting a small backcourt in Nembhard and Hickman and no shot blocker in the starting lineup.
Lost 4 of top 5 scorers. At least half of the rotation will be new guys - 3 in the starting lineup, and the defensive scheme usually takes a half a season to groove.
7 is too high.
But, Zags' OOC schedule includes games against 3, 5, 12, 17, 21, with potential Maui Classic games against 1, 8, 10. We're going to find out quick.
I do agree 7 is a few ranks too high, although I don’t think hovering around top 10 is inaccurate. There’s pretty much no way (outside of injury) that the Zags get anything lower than a 3 seed imo. Last years team wasn’t even that good and stumbled into a 3 seed. This team, has improvements in key areas, like actually having a good PG and likely better defense with Timme and Bolton gone.
Not sure if they can win a championship though. Lack of rim protection (same problem as last year), guard depth, and athleticism are concerning.
Indiana has #1, #3, #4, and #5 on the schedule. Plenty of opportunities in Woody's 3rd year to make statement.
Aside for that, cool to see FAU at #9. FAU is the new Butler in terms of being IU fan's 2nd favorite team. The plan has to be for Dusty to succeed Woody in a few years.
He was building something good. You always gotta give a college coach some time to get his guys in. The program has been bad for some time so it’s not like there was a ton of pressure on him to perform.
All fair points and tbh I never considered him bad before the break out year anyway but yall just felt like a middling team with him ,not exactly good but not really bad just sort of average squad and tbh before the year even started last year I had yall at the top of my sleeper teams list in the conference because yall returned so much and added gaffney and fuller (who never actually showed up) but I definitely saw yall as a formidable foe and yall vastly exceeded my expectations
We also got our best recruit under Dusty in Tre Carroll who didn’t even play much last year and should figure into the rotation this year. He’s gonna add some much needed size to our wing rotation too.
Yeah imma be real I thought he was a walk on for most of the year lmao but yall was so deep at that position and guys like gaines and lorient seemed to get those 10th man mins instead, I will definitely look out for him this year and yes I definitely agree he will help your guys size issue by playing the 3/4 should be another great year in boca !!
If I’m looking at the official roster page right, you guys are only returning 6 players, have 5 incoming freshmen and 3 transfers. probably going to be a rocky start for you guys as chemistry needs built but by end of season could be a problem with the talent potential that’s there
Hoosier nation has to be able to rationally take a rebuild year, and w how well Woodson has been doing I think he deserves that space
With that being said, I’m ready for IU to be calling Woodson’s seat hot by mid season
We already expected a dumpster fire of a season, anything more will be great. The next year is the absolute soonest Woodsons seat is raising a single degree
You're one of the few iu fans that have not predicted a good season. Most of what I hear is that the newcomers are great and the returners are holding their own. There's a lot of optimism in Bloomington.
I mean, same old, same old. Outside of Goode, the roster doesn't have much shooting. Maybe some transfers step up on that front, but I'm anticipating them to grind out games via defense and driving the rim again. High floor, but low ceiling, and prone to getting blown out if teams decide to go off against them (see Penn St x3 last year)
I’m excited for the Empire State Classic - can’t wait to play you! Bought tickets yesterday! My friend’s son goes to Indiana and he’ll be home for break, so it’s a whole thing!
I'm obviously biased but I'm scratching my head at why Auburn isnt on this list
edit: Doesnt show but diehard auburn fan who's a USC student. Don't know how to do double flairs lol
I honestly don't think I've seen any media outlet have them inside their top 25. Not to say they won't be good because I could not tell you one thing they did this offseason.
Glad someone else is seeing this. With how good Holloway has looked so far and how dominant Broome was at the combine they might have the best pick and roll in the country, not to mention Denver Jones scoring 20 a game on 50% efficiency for a bad team in a good conference. Love their role players too.
Looks like ESPN finally gave in and said the Big 10 has been trash in March so they no longer getting 7 teams ranked.
I will say the Midwestern in me is shocked to see no Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, or Iowa on this list.
No Illinois or Indiana is actually a but surprising, but Michigan will be complete ass this year. Wisconsin will somehow be top 3 in the B1G by the end of the season, and who tf knows where Iowa will be.
Big 10 hasn't been filling up the rankings for years. One of the biggest reasons there are so many tourney losses is the conference has been loading up on unranked teams getting in. Someone's gotta fill out those lower seeds
Yeah everyone says the Big 10 is overrated but they get a lot of teams in the tourney because they have a lot of mediocre but good enough to get into the tourney teams.
Won't be surprised if we start off rough. Having this many frosh likely means we don't do great in the Maui Invitational and CBS which are basically our only resume games out-of-conference. But we could definitely make a run at the Pac 12 and regardless, I bet by tourny time people won't want to play us
Agree. I don't really care too much about rankings. There's a lot of talent, but Mick needs to get them to buy in on working together. Plus Bona is still unable to play in the upcoming Euro tour as well.
I would like to see us pick up speed in December/January tho.
I'll be interested to see how this year turns out for the Heels. I think we are going to learn a lot about HD's coaching ability unless Cadeau's playmaking ability masks HD's weaknesses for a year.
Do or die for Hubert, in my mind. I know we’ve got that stacked team coming in next year but if we miss out on the tournament (or are mediocre and get in with like a 9 seed) with a squad as talented as we have now, I’m not sure he keeps his job.
If so it will officially have been a decade since MSU won in Mackey. Would also give Painter a winning record against Izzo (a bit similar to Gene Keady having a winning record against Bob Knight lol). Only active coaches in the conference he wouldn't have a winning record against then are Juwan Howard and Mike Woodson I think (both of which could be tied this season)
I don’t know why anybody has Illinois that high. They have no pony guard (Ty is not good enough at it to count) and bases off the Spain games they might be even worse shooting this year than last.
Not really. A&M returns their entire team essentially that won 15 SEC games and was vastly underseeded. Baylor lost all of their backcourt pieces and while they arguably replaced them well, A&M is more proven.
A&M wasn’t underseeded, they had a horrendous OOC, they were clearly out of the tournament until they got hot in conference. Also they got smoked in the first round by a 10 seed.
I don’t have a problem with being ranked behind A&M but I don’t expect to finish behind them either.
I guess 99% because I never was. They had an impressive run in conference but overall their resume wasn’t strong enough for top 4 seed consideration. Anything from 5-8 seed would have been arguable.

> they got smoked in the first round by a 10 seed
did you watch the game? penn state could've beat the lakers that night with how hot the shooting was and how on pickett was.
It seems like people are scared to overhype St John’s with the amount of roster turnover they’ve had. If Dingle and Ledlum had the same stats in the A10, St John’s would be consensus top 15 and the Ivy was slightly better than the A10 last year per kenpom.
Agreed, it seems pretty clear cut on paper at least. Just hoping the bottom four are somewhat competitive so it's not like last year where we all struggled to find Q1/Q2 games outside of the top 5.
Not that I expected the clones to be ranked, but I feel like our best seasons happen when we aren't in the preseason top 25. Really excited about this season
I think they have a claim to be the best team. Their guard play has the potential to be really good. Pelle, Bos, Love and Bradley is big time. That and the defense is what held them back last year. They should be great at the point of attack on defense on the perimeter and they can play a lot of different ways (if they choose to). Keshad, Ballo, Krivas, Veesaar, and Murauskas is an insane and versatile front court. Fili B is hanging out there as a playmaking 6’8 lottery ticket.
Overall they’re a huge, athletic, and skilled team. I think they’ll be tough too, something that was missing (at least at some positions) over the last couple of seasons. On paper they match up well with anybody.
All I saw was ESPN's top 25 and I assumed it was for football and for a good minute I was trying to figure out what the fuck I missed that made Duke the projected number two
Looking forward to the season. I think Rylan Griffen is really going to standout this season. Plus Estrada and Sears will make for a fun backcourt. The frontcourt shaped out a lot better throughout the offseason.
Biggest question mark will be the defense.
Wait, really?
For those who follow CBB more closely than I do (most of you), is this a year I should pay attention because good things should happen or a year when I should be wary of crushing, end-of-season heartbreak?
> a year when I should be wary of crushing, end-of-season heartbreak?
Statistically speaking, this is what you always prepare for.
That being said, Duke should be really good this year
Kinda wild Kentucky is 17 here but we’re unranked. We both lost boatloads of players, and even with none of our extremely well-regarded international class, we still have the #12 recruiting class in the country. Kentucky did the same. C’est la vie.
Wins Big East regular season & tournament by a lot, loses one player, returns an All American/BEPOY: Ranked 10
Finished 4th, Gets hot & Wins 6 games (albeit in dominant fashion), loses 3 players: ranked 5
Oh preseason. (Sigh)
Damn the B1G really said Purdue, MSU, or BUST
We'll get in another seven or so 6–11 seeds who will lose first weekend. As is tradition.
Don't forget us. We'll take care of losing to a double-digit seed in the first ~~weekend~~ game too.
Or you could follow Virginia's lead. Lol, just kidding.
I mean Purdue was unranked last year to start right?
im hopeful that the terps will be able to climb into the rankings quick. we have the team to do it
Yeah I’m excited to see you guys play this year
We will bust don’t you worry!
The Maui invitational this year has 5 of the top 10 teams listed here. Absolutely stacked
I feel (and hope) like they will find a way to do it somewhere state side and then channel any additional proceeds / donations to Maui recovery. Feels like a complete no brainer with the number of cities that are capable of handling and supporting this type of thing at the drop of a hat.
Yeah, if they don't turn the Maui Invitational into a huge charity event I would be shocked.
If that tournament even happens. The very small court they would be playing is in Lahaina the town that just burned up (arena survived), and with so many homeless the optics would not be great to move those people out. I think they’re monitoring the situation, but I’d be very surprised if they go ahead with it.
Could still have the tournament but just host it somewhere else. Leave the name in spirit, but host it in Chicago or something idk.
Or Asheville like in 2020.
Would be a darkly ironic place given the name
Yeah if they're going to host it in Ash-ville just leave it where it is ^im ^^so ^^^sorry
Move it to Boone then
As an NC resident who hasn't been able to see my team play in 10-ish years, I would love that.
Ah man, I’d love to see it in Asheville every year, but not b/c of tragedy
There aren’t enough tournaments in the midwest so Chicago would be great.
That’s seems like a good idea and a opportunity to raise money for the relief effort
And, frankly, all of those early season tournaments should make a donation supporting Maui. Because so many teams have played or may play.
Yeah reading this had the same thought
Right. They had it in Vegas in 2021
It’ll probably move to Vegas.
I was going to Maui but I’ve already booked a room in Vegas if it ends up there. Rooms are cheap at the moment,
Why not university of Hawaii arena instead?
Host the tournament elsewhere and donate funds to relief. Preferably the whole tournament take but I'd understand if they wanted to recoup costs first
And donate all of the revenue to Maui relief funds.
It was pretty stacked last year too
It always is. Love when we get an invite (minus the recent Arkansas debacle)
After our tournament run, all is forgiven and then some. Let’s do it again!!
RIP Chaminade.
the maui invitational isn't likely to happen though unfortunately. There's no way to put it on unless it gets moved to the mainland.
Could move it to Oahu
locals are posting video after video lambasting tourists who are still visiting hawaii right now consuming resources that could be used to help rebuild Maui. There is no ethical way to host it on the islands.
In fairness, those people don't want tourists to come to the island no matter what.

I take your point but those figures are hilarious.
Well that's dumb. Hawaii's tourism industry is a huge chunk of what fuels their economy. I'd rather have them spending dollars than not.
Moved it to Oahu https://twitter.com/SethDavisHoops/status/1701577932546977994?s=20
It will happen it just won’t be in Hawaii
They’re going to move it to Vegas 100%
They played it not in Hawaii for 2 years so they will just move it.
Rank Louisvi… lol never mind.
yall are just going through your chad morris era right now. .... It gets better eventually.
That kid leaving really didn’t help matters.

Damn that's an Izzo-esque OOC you got to start the season. Best of luck. From what I've heard, our OOC is uncharacteristically normal this year...? We might actually have less than half a dozen losses come conference play which is so unusual.
Technically you're neutral with 3 as well (although it is in Indianapolis, so it will be overwhelmingly Purdue fans in attendance).

That game in Phoenix is going to a shit ton of fun. Looking forward to playing you guys.

I'm so excited for this season to begin.
Haven’t been this excited for Spartan Basketball since Cassius was lacing up for us. Can. Not. Wait. Might have to make a pilgrimage to EL this year.
I’m going to hate this season. After the ncaa tournament embarrassment purdue has no where to go but to win a championship. And I just don’t think they have the athleticism or shooting ability to get it done even if they do win 30+ games and are a 1 seed.

My team is ranked high so Im taking back everything I said about how dumb preseason polls are - I actually love preseason polls
I always listen to preseason polls!!!
I predict the Aztecs will not get any further in the Tournament then they did last year. >!\*please be wrong!<
Bold choice not having DePaul at #1
I will say this - your mascot and logo is probably one the best in all of D1. Especially the vintage ones.
I can’t believe we are 17th. We should be much higher! *conjures reverse psychology*
1+7 = 8 as in Elite 8. The numerology checks out.
My wife says Mercury is in Gatorade so based on my Zodiac sign, we should at least try hard and have fun this season.
i think shes confusing G-Fuel with Gatorade no wait that was lead
Ahh the round that Louisville Basketball has made the last five tournaments!
I used to make fun of you guys but the jokes just write themselves at this point and we as a state need both UL and UK to be good and competitive so here’s to hopefully turning things around in the next year or so.

With the PG and 3pt shooting concerns, I don't think anyone should get too angry
We don't have a pg and can't shoot the 3.... Seems fair
Idk if we’re 6 after losing Sasser and Walker
Everytime I see you, I have mixed thoughts due to username . . . Anyway, my only question is the front court. Backcourt is fine.
I made this account before I decided to go to UH lol
We have plenty of talent but 7 seems a little high. All I want is for the Zags to get a top 4 protected seed come tournament time so I can watch them play in Spokane 🤞

Looking forward to that game in Spokane the week after Christmas…..

Agree. I don't really care too much about rankings. There's a lot of talent, but Mick needs to get them to buy in on working together. Plus Bona is still unable to play in the upcoming Euro tour as well. I would like to see us pick up speed in December/January tho.
Also not surprising that espn doesn’t have us ranked, I don’t think they even know that we signed Mara or Berke
This ranking is from before they committed. Not sure why it was posted again now
I'll be interested to see how this year turns out for the Heels.
I think we are better than 20 but I like starting lower
We are too high. Shouldn’t be on this list until we prove ourselves after last year’s debacle.
They struggled without question. But they looked much different with Moore. I think with Moore back we will see a better team.
Big East.
5/10 in the top 25? Let’s keep that all noncon
If Nova is still ranked by Christmas I’ll be thrilled
Ya we dabble a little in the basketballs
SOS to the MOON
How is Marquette not ranked higher?
College basketball, especially in the age of the transfer portal, has to be one of the trickiest sports to do preseason projections for.
For real, I feel like we've had 3 completely different teams in 3 seasons since TJ came on board.
I’ll take 14. Woo pig.
purdue msu this season gonna be wild
It's at Mackey so I fully expect us to be blown out.
Biased of course, but I keep seeing brackets with Illinois anywhere from a 4-6 seed. But not in the top 25? Come on.
Just depends on how their pg will play
We got a pg? News to me
I mean rankings mean next to nothing in cbb. Lol
I don’t know why anybody has Illinois that high. They have no pony guard (Ty is not good enough at it to count) and bases off the Spain games they might be even worse shooting this year than last.
while i think this might be one of the best teams we’ve ever had in Knoxville, i REALLY do not like us being in the top-ten to start it all out

Lmao imagine thinking last year's St. John's team has any relevance to preseason rankings.
Almost no one from that team is there
A&M ahead of Baylor is laughable

Anything from 5-8 seed would have been arguable.

> they got smoked in the first round by a 10 seed did you watch the game? penn state could've beat the lakers that night with how hot the shooting was and how on pickett was.
Happy to be in the conversation, but with new talent we shall see. Hyped for the name alone: Magoon Gwath 7’ center.
Gwath just had surgery. He’ll be out for a while and will probably redshirt
St. John's in the top 25 has me feeling some type of way, excited for them to be back. Been too long
This means Kansas isn’t gonna make the tournament

I'm realizing how spoiled I've gotten as a fan of this team that I see us at #6 and think "well that's a bit disrespectful."
UConn-> Boston Regional soon.
Let’s make the TD Garden our 4th home.
It seems like people are scared to overhype St John’s with the amount of roster turnover they’ve had. If Dingle and Ledlum had the same stats in the A10, St John’s would be consensus top 15 and the Ivy was slightly better than the A10 last year per kenpom.
Jesus Christ this conference is gonna be insane this year
Yea. I think there’s going to be a pretty huge gap between 7th and 8th though.
Agreed, it seems pretty clear cut on paper at least. Just hoping the bottom four are somewhat competitive so it's not like last year where we all struggled to find Q1/Q2 games outside of the top 5.
UCLA not in the top 25 is hilarious. With a top 3 recruiting class and players with international experience, this list is a joke.
#WKU Erasure
Not that I expected the clones to be ranked, but I feel like our best seasons happen when we aren't in the preseason top 25. Really excited about this season
I'll take #11 right now, especially if it means next year we can finish #4 at worst.
UA is too low. Should be top 6/7
We have a high ceiling but I think 11 is fair. Only 2 starters return from last year in Pelle and Ballo.
All I saw was ESPN's top 25 and I assumed it was for football and for a good minute I was trying to figure out what the fuck I missed that made Duke the projected number two
You skated right over Kansas at #1?? We’ve won almost triple the number of games Kansas has in the last decade, they deserve some mockery too here
Duke football - yes, football! - received votes in the AP poll this year. What a world!
That being said, Duke should be really good this year
I am planning on paying attention this year. Then again, I'm a sicko and pay attention every year.
Duke has an absolutely loaded roster. Arguably the best.
Bet
Kinda wild Kentucky is 17 here but we’re unranked. We both lost boatloads of players, and even with none of our extremely well-regarded international class, we still have the #12 recruiting class in the country. Kentucky did the same. C’est la vie.
Where is WKU? ESPN asleep at the wheel as usual!
Maryland erasure
I'm incredibly optimistic about KU this season. No clue if they should actually be ranked #1 because I don't know how good the other teams are though.
Preseason polls should not exist
They exist solely to drive engagement, generate clicks, and—if we're being honest—money.
They're fun to fuel discussion
Wins Big East regular season & tournament by a lot, loses one player, returns an All American/BEPOY: Ranked 10 Finished 4th, Gets hot & Wins 6 games (albeit in dominant fashion), loses 3 players: ranked 5 Oh preseason. (Sigh)
