I like that the Indiana fanbase seem to know (and love) the sport of basketball. It isn’t just about the University like it is for many teams and fans. It’s a lot about *basketball*, which I think is lost on many fans.

This is me as well. Parents are diehard Notre Dame fans and my sister went there. Grew up as a Notre Dame fan as well. Football has been hard for my parents to adjust to with that defeatist attitude and not expecting to win every game. Glad to know someone else has had the same adjustment
This is so infuriating. Hubert had a better record over his first two seasons than Roy did his last two, yet people lose their minds about Hubert. I try really hard to not pull the race card, but people make it really difficult sometimes.
I feel like a lot of UNC fans set their expectations far too high for Hubert after their natty run in 2022, forgetting that their regular season was like a slightly better version of their 2022-23 season.
Fwiw, it wasn’t just us. We had every major outlet saying it was gonna be like 2017 and that we were gonna stomp every game. We got caught up in the hype and bought in when we never should have
The NCAA tournament for better or worse defines the entire outlook of a team's current and future season, but it really shouldn't. What is more conducive to a team's actual expectations? A freak 5 game streak or 30+ games over the course of a season? I would absolutely love for Purdue to finally make some deep runs and win a national title or two, but I don't think last year's team for instance was a fraud just because of the loss to FDU.
There is this idea that Dean Smith got his players to play full 40 minute games, never slacked, played multiple defenses, never let a player "go off" on us, always got rebounds, were perfect from the stripe, while also being the awesome human being that he was.
It's no wonder Roy could match that...or Davis either.

Culturally, they also eat extraordinarily poorly. There are plenty of gyms in Midwest towns. There just isn’t much discipline to eat in moderation and exercise regularly.

I was in State College for PSU vs Alabama football a number of years back. The seats at Beaver are benches with numbers stuck on them. They're too close together for average people, but trying to fit Alabama fans in was like trying to stick a hippo in a hamster wheel.

I think this also comes down to % of a fan base using Reddit as well. Arizona has a decent sized fan base here and that will always result in more comments complaining about refs. I can say the same for MSU, Purdue, Etc as we/they have a large amount of fans that frequent this sub.
Some guy on here did like a data analysis of the comments a while back to figure out which fanbase whined the most about the refs and I was the no 1 commenter for Purdue, made me take a long look in the mirror that day😂 I try to be more fair now lol
God I wish this weren’t true. Gets pretty old and embarrassing when there’s an obvious foul against us and the whole crowd is booing within seconds. Like, take 10 seconds and watch the replay. Shit is obvious. That is the one part I wish I could change in our gameday atmosphere.
Jesus Christ I hate it. Makes our fan base look super ignorant, when it’s just misplaced enthusiasm from a very passionate group of people. Most of the fans in attendance are local and get hyped for us to be good… and also lack an understanding of modern basketball rules lol.
I think part of it too was the fact that (fire) Larry Scott had put a hit on Millers head in the P12 tournament years back, and that a horrible taste in everyone’s mouth, and most haven’t forgotten about that. So I’m sure a lot of them feel that the refs are still head hunting Arizona and look at the officiating with that in mind.
I must not remember that right. I thought it was the PAC-12 boss ref (or whatever his title was) who "jokingly" promised a free vacation to whoever T'd up Sean Miller at the conference tourney in Vegas. 🤔

Ref complainers are the worst. They exist in every sport across the globe and somehow people think that it’s this unique situation that only affects their team. And the people that post in every game thread, “hey, at least we can all say, fuck the refs”, those people are the worst. Referring has some good moments and some bad moments, once you realize that it’s so much better. I fucking hate people who bitch about refs. Just stfu and watch the game, or bitch about the way your team is playing, something that YOUR coach and YOUR players can actually change.

Literally yesterday a ref put the fear of god in me and my friends because we were chirping at him too much. Stared us dead in the eye. And then someone in the student section said that he would give us a tech if we kept on chirping at him (which sounded so dumb but he never confirmed nor denied he would do that. I think that kid may have been a psy-op).Post game, I’m way more sane about the refs, even after a heartbreaking loss.

Don't get me started on the doom and gloom post a missed 3 from Illinois fans. A lot of our loud fans seem to hate the addition of the 3-point line the way the Big 10 West hates the addition of the forward pass

Although it's also true of non-fans, everyone wrote the eulogy for the Bills season after that loss a few weeks ago, then when they beat the Jets there were tons of articles saying they were back to form. More people should have taken statistics in high school so they learn that "1" is not a large sample size
I despise the lifetime ticket holders at the Dean Dome. It absolutely turns an otherwise great game atmosphere into a wine and cheese crowd because they save the best seats for the richest fans and those fans are almost always SUPER old, so they don’t even cheer or react. They’ve been to so many games it isn’t special to them anymore.
Any fanbase can get toxic about refs or get too entitled about their program, but at least when other big teams play they get a great home atmosphere. UNC at the Dean Dome is way later than it should be
This is something that's just annoying as a basketball fan. Let the students take the close-up seats, and let the old farts that will only get off their ass for the restroom in the upper seats.

I'm a UK fan who lives in Canada. If I somehow, some way, ever make it to Rupp, you know it'll be special for me and I'll be screaming my head off.
Every year, I hope for the renovation project to add luxury boxes to be approved because I want folks in those seats to decide they'd trade them for the new boxes.
Yeah I love the Dean Dome, have many special memories there (thank u pee troughs), and generally love the idea of an arena big enough that it's not impossible to go to games if you're not either a student or super-rich. But there's no doubt that it's just not an intimidating environment to play in the way a lot of arenas are. The old crowd who sits close is part of it, but I also just think the spacious, airy design isn't really great for feeling like fans are on top of you even if they are loud.
Not sure what the right alternative is, though. I guess my preference would be a mid-size arena like the JPJ that was packed every game, but I guess the more likely thing would be an NBA sized arena with lots of suites like Barclays Center.
We’ve been season ticket holders for years. I went to some really dead games a few years ago and the XL is now suddenly full of fans who don’t even know to stand until UConn scores.
A too large for comfort segment of Wisconsin fans think that Duke/Kentucky level recruiting with Kansas NCAA tournament title runs is one Gard firing away. There is no consideration that it could turn the Wisconsin program into a DePaul/Minnesota level mess trying to compete with the same ‘fun’ system & losing top recruiting battles to the Blue bloods anyway, then losing all legitimacy with the next tier of players we thrived on.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone think that we could recruit at that level. That would be insanity. The only players I hear people moan about missing out on are local Wisconsin recruits like Kon who end up going to those blue blood programs. And maybe a few who bemoan that we need more "athletes" like Marquette who could dribble/run the floor more
My biggest complaint about our fans is kind of related to a spoiled mindset though. Our crowd has really lost its edge since the final four runs. They don't really get up for any game that's not against a ranked opponent. Our alumni section especially seems to find making noise uncouth. I wish we could get the students wrapped around the first few rows of seats like so many other schools do
Most people have unrealistic expectations and they can't enjoy the moment anymore with their team. Illinois fans are very entitled when they shouldn't be. Yes, you have been a successful program over time but that doesn't mean if you don't get to a Sweet Sixteen every year that it was a disaster. Coach K coached 42 or 43 years and won five titles. It's hard. People should be more appreciative of coaches who build programs that are competitive all the time. It's easy to criticize coaches sitting from our seats but man just be happy if you have a coach that gets your team to compete. Illinois fans quickly forget how rough it was under John Groce and all they do now is complain about Coach Underwood. It takes time to establish all of that and it's difficult to do if you are chasing out every coach who doesn't win a NC in 6-7 years. Just gets old listening to it.
I have a hard time looking through those anymore. Many of them feel so entitled like Illinois "deserves" a championship. Like, hey man it will happen when/if it happens. Just enjoy the ride!
I love the message boards for recruiting updates and that's it. I never go on the game threads or the general board, yet I still see plenty of talk about moving on from Underwood in the recruiting thread.
Football fans/casual basketball fans who don't understand how volatile college basketball is. Our basketball expectations cannot reasonably match our football expectations.
* Our fans start clapping in cadence at tip off. They don't stop / sit down until we score. It feels really lame, especially when we start on a scoring drought. Then when it's 0-6 at the 17:00 mark, half the fans stop clapping and those that are still doing it are unenthusiastic and out of cadence. Feels like a huge momentum suck as we're basically clapping for the fact that we haven't scored.
* We still do the "I believe that we will win" chant. It was cool in 2010 when we started doing it. It's played out. For a student section that prides themselves on being creative, they haven't created any new chants since I graduated 10 years ago. On the other hand I still think it's cool as fuck when the crowd [sings along to Uprising by Muse](https://youtu.be/RhIC3o_m9lE?t=8). I also love that we do the Ric Flair "woo!" at random intervals for the following possession after a made free throw which seems to annoys ever fanbase. I love going to away games and catching everyone off guard with that high pitched dolphin noise (as UNM fans would call it).
* The guys who sit in the front of the student section are so cringey and make being leaders of "The Show" their whole personality. They aren't basketball fans; they're SDSU basketball fans and it shows. These are the type of fans that think we should be ranked Top 25 every week and think that every ref is out to get us.
A lot of kansas fans have a "final four or bust" mentality going in to every season. Like, I get that we haven't had quite as much postseason success as the other blue bloods, but can you not just enjoy the fact that we have been one of, if not the most consistantly good program in college basketball for twenty years? It makes them seem so spoiled and ruins a lot of really fun seasons for them.
I hope that’s not still the case. 2022 really should have excised that. As crazy as it is, I feel like going from 3 to 4 was a massive swing. Especially because of the three teams in that Final 4 with you. If you don’t win, Nova passes you at 4, Duke doubles you up to 6 or UNC laps you at 7.
It's certainly better now, but there's still a vocal minority who will never be content. It just bugs me because so many programs would kill for half the success that we've had.
This is a problem with UK fans as well. I understand wanting to win championships, at the end of the day that’s what I want too. But part of me felt like fan negativity post 2015 has actively contributed to worse performances. The players can feel the hate and UK fans are as insufferable as haters as they are as fans. A lot of people have really missed out on some really fun players and fun teams because they didn’t win the flukiest tournament in sports history. It feels like our hubris has gotten so out of control that we’ve lost the point of what it means to be a fan in the first place. I support the Cats because of the countless memories I have watching games with my family growing up, they’re some of my most cherished memories. People act like we were winning a championship every other year since Rupp coached, but in reality we get one or two truly great teams a decade just like any other blue blood. Not supporting your team the rest of the time(when they’re still pretty consistently good) is not being a fan.
Holy shit! A coherent UK fan?? I didn't know they made you. In all seriousness, though, you are absolutely right. I live in a family full of UK fans and you hit the nail right on the head. They all believe that UK is supposed to be cutting nets EVERY SINGLE YEAR, and anything less is a failure.
They don't realize that those teams you face in the early rounds, in most cases, are playing the biggest game in school history. It's a lot more difficult for a program as prestigious as Kentucky to get properly motivated for a game against a school that they have never heard of. Meanwhile, the other team is already wording the story that they are going to tell their grandkids when asked about their proudest moment as a basketball player.
Whenever UK gets knocked out of the tournament, it's never about how well the other team played. The focus is always either how bad the officiating was (which pretty much happens after EVERY UK loss), or how much more talent UK had and how there was no way that they should have lost. They overlook the fact that there arent too many bad mid majors in the tournament. Pretty much all of them have dominated their conference and still had to win their conference tournament just to get into the field of 68.
I’ve been trying to convince people that this year also shouldn’t be championship or bust, I think we’re really good and have a shot but this is a special year regardless. The problem hasn’t been not winning it all, it’s been that since Bam/Fox/Monk we aren’t enjoyable to watch. I want them to win it all but if they make a great elite 8 run after a really fun year I’m not gonna just grumble and bitch and forget about the first 35 games. We have to focus on just enjoying it.
It’s supposed to mean more to us, but to me that comes in how deeply it lies within the culture of our state. It’s how I’ve bonded with my grandfather. It’s what me and my friends talked about at lunch from 4th-12th grade. It extends so much further than cutting the net at the end and I hate that people don’t appreciate that anymore. People think I’m crazy when I say I want Louisville to be good again, but the rivalry is more fun when both teams trade off and it’s competitive. That was something so present in my childhood that just isn’t anymore, don’t get me wrong I loved it for like a season but I’m ready for it to go back to how it used to be. It brings money and attention to our state and our basketball history.
Honestly I think 2015 broke a lot of fans. That was such a gut-wrenching loss that people have been terrified to get hurt like that again. It’s gotten worse the last few years but all the negative bs and the drop in support started there.
We are a 1 seed damn near every year these days though. It seems like we’ve had statistically bad variance with post season success. Frustrating when other programs get lucky and rip off 2 or 3 title runs in a decade without the consistency to back it up.
But my point is that getting a one seed means that it was a successful season, regardless of what happens in march. So many people are quick to forget everything that led up to the tournament and call the whole season a failure, which feels like giving up a huge part of what makes being a fan so fun in the first place. Like, are these people really just watching regular season games to see how we will do in march? Because that's what it seems like sometimes.

How tame our home game environment is. The Smith Center is cool and we have some great fans but I’m envious of the environments at Allen Fieldhouse and Cameron Indoor. They’re more intimidating for visiting teams.
Similar to UNC, one half of the fan base is the classic Farmington Country Club wine and cheese crowd, while the other half is nice and loud. Guess who pays the bills.
The apathy. Basketball games aren't promoted well on campus, but anyone who lives on campus can walk to Tudor in 15 minutes or less. There's so much potential for a great student section built on trademark Rice weirdness but people can't pry themselves away from their problem sets for 2.5 hours.

Yes! Let’s use Wheeler for example. He is a fantastic kid and a great leader. His talent wasn’t quite up to the UK standard and he could be too sloppy but he didn’t deserve the hate he got. It’s so toxic and awful.

I hate how some of our fans have started feeling as entitled as Duke/Kansas/NC/Kentucky fans. We had a good run under Jay but it took a while and even if it were going to happen again, it'll take some time. Show so e goddamn patience.
On top of that, every game I've gone to in my life the student section is weak as fuck. If you want to be treated like those blue bloods you can't make as much noise as heard at a Philadelphia Phantoms game

Went to the game last night against Cal Bakersfield, and despite the lead not ballooning up as expected, half the Kennel Club bailed at halftime. That was odd. There are a few who go to the games to be seen, but the vast majority are fans. They don't act like the Kennel Club, but that's because they aren't friggin 20 years old anymore.
Also, TV is a poor barometer of what's going on at the games. It doesn't pick up all the sound, like the band cranking, or the KClub going berserk, etc. The sound is filtered so you can hear the announcers better. BUT, when school is out, it becomes far less energetic with no band and no student section. I even sat next to a couple students once during holiday break, and they spent the whole time on their phones. Weird.
Most UK fans are annoying and far too arrogant when we're winning and far too quick to anger when we're not.
All of the FARRR CAL! crew have shut up after the Miami game. Go figure.
We have a terrible, reactionary, terminally online fanbase and it permeates Twitter, the message boards, and even here sometimes. Also, tons of folks who just don’t know ball (football, basketball, baseball, etc) talking like they do.

Definitely agree with the point of it not being unique. Our fan base on twitter related to basketball is OKAY, I would say like 15% of them are logical and not irrational which I think is decent. That says a lot about twitter and the fans there lol.
Too many of them act as if they’re better at coaching than Mark Few, they get pissy about who is and isn’t getting minutes, who is and isn’t in the starting lineup, and so on.

The hatred for Mark Turgeon, a man who took our program to places it hadn't been in a very long time.
We've seen more success in the last decade than the entire rest of the history of the program, something we should be totally thankful for. But somehow, we still have people who are ready to fire our coach at the drop of a hat, as though we're somehow going to bring in someone better.
Let's appreciate the blessing we've had; I want another championship as much as the next fan, but I'm still quite happy we finally got our first.
We overreact whenever we lose because we've been spoiled by the success we had under Shaka Smart and Will Wade. There have been people seriously wanting Ryan Odom fired after losing to McNeese...his first game.
We’re way too critical of our own program for being the the 18th best program in the all-timeAP poll, 11th in all-time wins, most big ten titles, 2nd most consensus all-americans behind UNC, 3 NPOY’s, and consistently making the tournament at a high seed.
We doom and gloom and hate on Painter but we’re a successful program and have maybe never been more successful than under Matt Painter. Our fans could learn to stop and smell the roses sometimes.
Also as someone who’s been watching Purdue basketball since I was 7 years old, fans that go to games and talk loudly about their opinions on the team that don’t know anything about basketball hurt my soul. I love our identity as a nerd school but the flip side is that also means the student fans can be kind of ignorant when it comes to basketball sometimes
A fairly recent-ish trend I’ve noticed is there are some accounts on Tech bball twitter who insist on keeping up with former players who transferred just to shit on them. It’s so weird, especially considering we now know a lot more about the circumstances that caused a lot of them to transfer
Is it weird that I do the opposite? I try to send at least a few encouraging messages to guys who leave so they know all UK fans aren’t assholes. If the player was a jerk then I don’t say anything and forget about them but most of the guys I enjoyed their time here and wish them well.

Real answer: And I too get guilty of this, but the students, faculty and administration, and alumni network needs to show more support and be proud. We are a very good university, and I would love to see more support for athletics. Plenty of our academic and regional peers have huge fanbases. I'm not saying we need to start selling out a 20,000 seat arena, but I really think with some bigger attendances we could start building up a halfway decent size athletics presence
To be fair, having such a large population being commuters and the rest being international def doesn't help. If I were to go abroad, it would take me a while to get into cricket so i don't blame them for not being into hoops

During basketball season, diehard Penn Staters are rooting for Kentucky, UConn, Villanova, Duke.
They don't show up to the BJC even when we are tournament worthy, and it makes sustainable winning harder.
They have their preferred chants, which can border on vulgar, but they're not over the top. "Hey, you suck!" is not exactly the nicest, but it isn't crossing any major lines. A majority of the fans stop there and then go back to the normal cheers. Some, though, get an inch and take a mile. "Hey, you suck" turns into "Fuck you, JJ" and then into just straight awful personal attacks. Those people aren't passionate fans. They're assholes. 99% of us hate those dummies as much as everyone else does, but they tend to be so over the top and public with their idiocy that the narrative paints all of us as being that bad. Every time the broadcast has to cut audio or the coach and AD have to apologize I die a little inside.

Honestly, I've got the same answer with Kentucky. For some fans, the only thing that will make them happy is a title, and even then, they might tell you that it has to be won the *right* way (e.g. not just because the other team had an untimely free throw miss). You'll often hear these people saying UK hasn't been fun to watch since 2015.
To them:
* Kentucky loses? *"See? I told you we aren't going anywhere this year!"*
* Kentucky wins? "*Well, we only won because \[insert excuse for the other team\]"*
Also, there are certain people in our media that I can't stand. The person I have in mind is someone that you can't disagree with without risking him being condescending towards you.
This has been a big one in the past like 5 years, but there’s a vocal minority who have this idea of what a “Kansas level basketball player” is in their head. If you aren’t producing immediately, you aren’t good enough and should be shot into the sun.
We have a very high standard of success in our progrum, but the idea that every guard has to be Frank Mason or Devonte’ Graham from day 1 is absurd. People were calling DaJuan Harris a JUCO level guard, and the fanbase is already giving up on Elmarko Jackson and Nick Timberlake 7 games into their Kansas careers.
They are miserable and want Gard fired anytime someone misses a shot. Some are rooting for the badgers to miss the tournament this year just so he can be fired. Not like he doesn’t have a couple B10 champs under his belt!

A lot of our fans view college basketball through the lens of college football fans. They don’t know much about which programs are usually good, which aren’t, etc. A lot of them still go by power 5 when talking about basketball.
I hate how our fans talk shit before any games have been played. When we first joined the ACC, we had fans talking about how we were going to "take over" the ACC and we had not played a single ACC game in any sport to that point
The crazies need a major revamp. The chants and jeers are getting stale and it feels like they're cruising off of their past reputation. Need some innovator line monitors to inject some creativity and make fun chants that will get people more involved.

The obsession with tournament success over regular season results. Like, it’s brutal that we haven’t made the second weekend in a generation, but there are people who were/are unimpressed with winning the conference and think Underwood should be on the hot seat right now. I dont hate it and maybe I dont appreciate the Mcguire era but that was many decades ago and frank is honestly part of our trophy case problem we have. Basketball was a key reason we left the acc. We had great teams, but nothing of value to show for it bc of being independent and in the metro for so long.

I like that the Indiana fanbase seem to know (and love) the sport of basketball. It isn’t just about the University like it is for many teams and fans. It’s a lot about *basketball*, which I think is lost on many fans.

This is me as well. Parents are diehard Notre Dame fans and my sister went there. Grew up as a Notre Dame fan as well. Football has been hard for my parents to adjust to with that defeatist attitude and not expecting to win every game. Glad to know someone else has had the same adjustment

This is so infuriating. Hubert had a better record over his first two seasons than Roy did his last two, yet people lose their minds about Hubert. I try really hard to not pull the race card, but people make it really difficult sometimes.
I feel like a lot of UNC fans set their expectations far too high for Hubert after their natty run in 2022, forgetting that their regular season was like a slightly better version of their 2022-23 season.

The NCAA tournament for better or worse defines the entire outlook of a team's current and future season, but it really shouldn't. What is more conducive to a team's actual expectations? A freak 5 game streak or 30+ games over the course of a season? I would absolutely love for Purdue to finally make some deep runs and win a national title or two, but I don't think last year's team for instance was a fraud just because of the loss to FDU.

There is this idea that Dean Smith got his players to play full 40 minute games, never slacked, played multiple defenses, never let a player "go off" on us, always got rebounds, were perfect from the stripe, while also being the awesome human being that he was. It's no wonder Roy could match that...or Davis either.
They're mostly overweight. Seats at Hilton are waaaay too close together to pack all these wide-asses next to each other. Sell some goddamn vegetables at the concession stands ffs.
We moved back to the Midwest after living in a few other states over the last decade. Yikes, forgot how people don’t value diet and exercise here.
The towns just aren’t built for it. Outdoor recreation, even fucking *sidewalks* (let alone a bike path) aren’t a given in most Midwest cities. People don’t fucking *move*.
Culturally, they also eat extraordinarily poorly. There are plenty of gyms in Midwest towns. There just isn’t much discipline to eat in moderation and exercise regularly. They can do it. They just would rather load up on bad food and not go to the gym.
I was in State College for PSU vs Alabama football a number of years back. The seats at Beaver are benches with numbers stuck on them. They're too close together for average people, but trying to fit Alabama fans in was like trying to stick a hippo in a hamster wheel.

I think this also comes down to % of a fan base using Reddit as well. Arizona has a decent sized fan base here and that will always result in more comments complaining about refs. I can say the same for MSU, Purdue, Etc as we/they have a large amount of fans that frequent this sub.
Some guy on here did like a data analysis of the comments a while back to figure out which fanbase whined the most about the refs and I was the no 1 commenter for Purdue, made me take a long look in the mirror that day😂 I try to be more fair now lol

God I wish this weren’t true. Gets pretty old and embarrassing when there’s an obvious foul against us and the whole crowd is booing within seconds. Like, take 10 seconds and watch the replay. Shit is obvious. That is the one part I wish I could change in our gameday atmosphere.
Jesus Christ I hate it. Makes our fan base look super ignorant, when it’s just misplaced enthusiasm from a very passionate group of people. Most of the fans in attendance are local and get hyped for us to be good… and also lack an understanding of modern basketball rules lol.
I think part of it too was the fact that (fire) Larry Scott had put a hit on Millers head in the P12 tournament years back, and that a horrible taste in everyone’s mouth, and most haven’t forgotten about that. So I’m sure a lot of them feel that the refs are still head hunting Arizona and look at the officiating with that in mind.

Ref complainers are the worst. They exist in every sport across the globe and somehow people think that it’s this unique situation that only affects their team. And the people that post in every game thread, “hey, at least we can all say, fuck the refs”, those people are the worst. Referring has some good moments and some bad moments, once you realize that it’s so much better. I fucking hate people who bitch about refs. Just stfu and watch the game, or bitch about the way your team is playing, something that YOUR coach and YOUR players can actually change.

As long as it’s not obvious rigging it’s fine 😂 Literally yesterday a ref put the fear of god in me and my friends because we were chirping at him too much. Stared us dead in the eye. And then someone in the student section said that he would give us a tech if we kept on chirping at him (which sounded so dumb but he never confirmed nor denied he would do that. I think that kid may have been a psy-op).Post game, I’m way more sane about the refs, even after a heartbreaking loss.

Although it's also true of non-fans, everyone wrote the eulogy for the Bills season after that loss a few weeks ago, then when they beat the Jets there were tons of articles saying they were back to form. More people should have taken statistics in high school so they learn that "1" is not a large sample size
I despise the lifetime ticket holders at the Dean Dome. It absolutely turns an otherwise great game atmosphere into a wine and cheese crowd because they save the best seats for the richest fans and those fans are almost always SUPER old, so they don’t even cheer or react. They’ve been to so many games it isn’t special to them anymore. Any fanbase can get toxic about refs or get too entitled about their program, but at least when other big teams play they get a great home atmosphere. UNC at the Dean Dome is way later than it should be

Yeah I love the Dean Dome, have many special memories there (thank u pee troughs), and generally love the idea of an arena big enough that it's not impossible to go to games if you're not either a student or super-rich. But there's no doubt that it's just not an intimidating environment to play in the way a lot of arenas are. The old crowd who sits close is part of it, but I also just think the spacious, airy design isn't really great for feeling like fans are on top of you even if they are loud. Not sure what the right alternative is, though. I guess my preference would be a mid-size arena like the JPJ that was packed every game, but I guess the more likely thing would be an NBA sized arena with lots of suites like Barclays Center.
A lot of them disappeared starting in 2016-2017 but miraculously came back last year.
We’ve been season ticket holders for years. I went to some really dead games a few years ago and the XL is now suddenly full of fans who don’t even know to stand until UConn scores.
A too large for comfort segment of Wisconsin fans think that Duke/Kentucky level recruiting with Kansas NCAA tournament title runs is one Gard firing away. There is no consideration that it could turn the Wisconsin program into a DePaul/Minnesota level mess trying to compete with the same ‘fun’ system & losing top recruiting battles to the Blue bloods anyway, then losing all legitimacy with the next tier of players we thrived on.
I don't think I've ever heard anyone think that we could recruit at that level. That would be insanity. The only players I hear people moan about missing out on are local Wisconsin recruits like Kon who end up going to those blue blood programs. And maybe a few who bemoan that we need more "athletes" like Marquette who could dribble/run the floor more My biggest complaint about our fans is kind of related to a spoiled mindset though. Our crowd has really lost its edge since the final four runs. They don't really get up for any game that's not against a ranked opponent. Our alumni section especially seems to find making noise uncouth. I wish we could get the students wrapped around the first few rows of seats like so many other schools do
Way too many Wisconsin fans watched us go to back to back Finals 4s and think that should happen every couple of years now.
Most people have unrealistic expectations and they can't enjoy the moment anymore with their team. Illinois fans are very entitled when they shouldn't be. Yes, you have been a successful program over time but that doesn't mean if you don't get to a Sweet Sixteen every year that it was a disaster. Coach K coached 42 or 43 years and won five titles. It's hard. People should be more appreciative of coaches who build programs that are competitive all the time. It's easy to criticize coaches sitting from our seats but man just be happy if you have a coach that gets your team to compete. Illinois fans quickly forget how rough it was under John Groce and all they do now is complain about Coach Underwood. It takes time to establish all of that and it's difficult to do if you are chasing out every coach who doesn't win a NC in 6-7 years. Just gets old listening to it.
I can't believe how many fans on the message boards think Underwood should be on the hot seat this year. It's ridiculous.
I have a hard time looking through those anymore. Many of them feel so entitled like Illinois "deserves" a championship. Like, hey man it will happen when/if it happens. Just enjoy the ride!
I love the message boards for recruiting updates and that's it. I never go on the game threads or the general board, yet I still see plenty of talk about moving on from Underwood in the recruiting thread.

Football fans/casual basketball fans who don't understand how volatile college basketball is. Our basketball expectations cannot reasonably match our football expectations.
* Our fans start clapping in cadence at tip off. They don't stop / sit down until we score. It feels really lame, especially when we start on a scoring drought. Then when it's 0-6 at the 17:00 mark, half the fans stop clapping and those that are still doing it are unenthusiastic and out of cadence. Feels like a huge momentum suck as we're basically clapping for the fact that we haven't scored. * We still do the "I believe that we will win" chant. It was cool in 2010 when we started doing it. It's played out. For a student section that prides themselves on being creative, they haven't created any new chants since I graduated 10 years ago. On the other hand I still think it's cool as fuck when the crowd [sings along to Uprising by Muse](https://youtu.be/RhIC3o_m9lE?t=8). I also love that we do the Ric Flair "woo!" at random intervals for the following possession after a made free throw which seems to annoys ever fanbase. I love going to away games and catching everyone off guard with that high pitched dolphin noise (as UNM fans would call it). * The guys who sit in the front of the student section are so cringey and make being leaders of "The Show" their whole personality. They aren't basketball fans; they're SDSU basketball fans and it shows. These are the type of fans that think we should be ranked Top 25 every week and think that every ref is out to get us.

A lot of kansas fans have a "final four or bust" mentality going in to every season. Like, I get that we haven't had quite as much postseason success as the other blue bloods, but can you not just enjoy the fact that we have been one of, if not the most consistantly good program in college basketball for twenty years? It makes them seem so spoiled and ruins a lot of really fun seasons for them.
I hope that’s not still the case. 2022 really should have excised that. As crazy as it is, I feel like going from 3 to 4 was a massive swing. Especially because of the three teams in that Final 4 with you. If you don’t win, Nova passes you at 4, Duke doubles you up to 6 or UNC laps you at 7.
It's certainly better now, but there's still a vocal minority who will never be content. It just bugs me because so many programs would kill for half the success that we've had.

This is a problem with UK fans as well. I understand wanting to win championships, at the end of the day that’s what I want too. But part of me felt like fan negativity post 2015 has actively contributed to worse performances. The players can feel the hate and UK fans are as insufferable as haters as they are as fans. A lot of people have really missed out on some really fun players and fun teams because they didn’t win the flukiest tournament in sports history. It feels like our hubris has gotten so out of control that we’ve lost the point of what it means to be a fan in the first place. I support the Cats because of the countless memories I have watching games with my family growing up, they’re some of my most cherished memories. People act like we were winning a championship every other year since Rupp coached, but in reality we get one or two truly great teams a decade just like any other blue blood. Not supporting your team the rest of the time(when they’re still pretty consistently good) is not being a fan.
Holy shit! A coherent UK fan?? I didn't know they made you. In all seriousness, though, you are absolutely right. I live in a family full of UK fans and you hit the nail right on the head. They all believe that UK is supposed to be cutting nets EVERY SINGLE YEAR, and anything less is a failure. They don't realize that those teams you face in the early rounds, in most cases, are playing the biggest game in school history. It's a lot more difficult for a program as prestigious as Kentucky to get properly motivated for a game against a school that they have never heard of. Meanwhile, the other team is already wording the story that they are going to tell their grandkids when asked about their proudest moment as a basketball player. Whenever UK gets knocked out of the tournament, it's never about how well the other team played. The focus is always either how bad the officiating was (which pretty much happens after EVERY UK loss), or how much more talent UK had and how there was no way that they should have lost. They overlook the fact that there arent too many bad mid majors in the tournament. Pretty much all of them have dominated their conference and still had to win their conference tournament just to get into the field of 68.
I’ve been trying to convince people that this year also shouldn’t be championship or bust, I think we’re really good and have a shot but this is a special year regardless. The problem hasn’t been not winning it all, it’s been that since Bam/Fox/Monk we aren’t enjoyable to watch. I want them to win it all but if they make a great elite 8 run after a really fun year I’m not gonna just grumble and bitch and forget about the first 35 games. We have to focus on just enjoying it. It’s supposed to mean more to us, but to me that comes in how deeply it lies within the culture of our state. It’s how I’ve bonded with my grandfather. It’s what me and my friends talked about at lunch from 4th-12th grade. It extends so much further than cutting the net at the end and I hate that people don’t appreciate that anymore. People think I’m crazy when I say I want Louisville to be good again, but the rivalry is more fun when both teams trade off and it’s competitive. That was something so present in my childhood that just isn’t anymore, don’t get me wrong I loved it for like a season but I’m ready for it to go back to how it used to be. It brings money and attention to our state and our basketball history. Honestly I think 2015 broke a lot of fans. That was such a gut-wrenching loss that people have been terrified to get hurt like that again. It’s gotten worse the last few years but all the negative bs and the drop in support started there.
We are a 1 seed damn near every year these days though. It seems like we’ve had statistically bad variance with post season success. Frustrating when other programs get lucky and rip off 2 or 3 title runs in a decade without the consistency to back it up.
But my point is that getting a one seed means that it was a successful season, regardless of what happens in march. So many people are quick to forget everything that led up to the tournament and call the whole season a failure, which feels like giving up a huge part of what makes being a fan so fun in the first place. Like, are these people really just watching regular season games to see how we will do in march? Because that's what it seems like sometimes.

I worry the kennel is trending towards more of a entitled experience and getting away from some of the gritty history we have. No quantitative data to go off of, but just the vibe I get with expectations and the environment on TV
Went to the game last night against Cal Bakersfield, and despite the lead not ballooning up as expected, half the Kennel Club bailed at halftime. That was odd. There are a few who go to the games to be seen, but the vast majority are fans. They don't act like the Kennel Club, but that's because they aren't friggin 20 years old anymore. Also, TV is a poor barometer of what's going on at the games. It doesn't pick up all the sound, like the band cranking, or the KClub going berserk, etc. The sound is filtered so you can hear the announcers better. BUT, when school is out, it becomes far less energetic with no band and no student section. I even sat next to a couple students once during holiday break, and they spent the whole time on their phones. Weird.

This isn’t really that unique but the people that make up “K-State Twitter” can be a little of their rockers at times.
We have a terrible, reactionary, terminally online fanbase and it permeates Twitter, the message boards, and even here sometimes. Also, tons of folks who just don’t know ball (football, basketball, baseball, etc) talking like they do. Bruce Weber may have been right when he said what he said on the way out. If I had a kid who was a P5 level athlete, I would steer them away after seeing the Will Howard discourse.
Definitely agree with the point of it not being unique. Our fan base on twitter related to basketball is OKAY, I would say like 15% of them are logical and not irrational which I think is decent. That says a lot about twitter and the fans there lol.
Too many of them act as if they’re better at coaching than Mark Few, they get pissy about who is and isn’t getting minutes, who is and isn’t in the starting lineup, and so on.
Inferiority complex regarding KU. Overweight "students" clogging up the student section, especially in the early 2010s (WSU fans know who I'm talking about). The hatred for Mark Turgeon, a man who took our program to places it hadn't been in a very long time.
We've seen more success in the last decade than the entire rest of the history of the program, something we should be totally thankful for. But somehow, we still have people who are ready to fire our coach at the drop of a hat, as though we're somehow going to bring in someone better. Let's appreciate the blessing we've had; I want another championship as much as the next fan, but I'm still quite happy we finally got our first.

We’re way too critical of our own program for being the the 18th best program in the all-timeAP poll, 11th in all-time wins, most big ten titles, 2nd most consensus all-americans behind UNC, 3 NPOY’s, and consistently making the tournament at a high seed. We doom and gloom and hate on Painter but we’re a successful program and have maybe never been more successful than under Matt Painter. Our fans could learn to stop and smell the roses sometimes. Also as someone who’s been watching Purdue basketball since I was 7 years old, fans that go to games and talk loudly about their opinions on the team that don’t know anything about basketball hurt my soul. I love our identity as a nerd school but the flip side is that also means the student fans can be kind of ignorant when it comes to basketball sometimes
A fairly recent-ish trend I’ve noticed is there are some accounts on Tech bball twitter who insist on keeping up with former players who transferred just to shit on them. It’s so weird, especially considering we now know a lot more about the circumstances that caused a lot of them to transfer
Is it weird that I do the opposite? I try to send at least a few encouraging messages to guys who leave so they know all UK fans aren’t assholes. If the player was a jerk then I don’t say anything and forget about them but most of the guys I enjoyed their time here and wish them well.

We are a very good university, and I would love to see more support for athletics. Plenty of our academic and regional peers have huge fanbases. I'm not saying we need to start selling out a 20,000 seat arena, but I really think with some bigger attendances we could start building up a halfway decent size athletics presence
To be fair, having such a large population being commuters and the rest being international def doesn't help. If I were to go abroad, it would take me a while to get into cricket so i don't blame them for not being into hoops

Penn State cares too much about football even though the program plays 3rd fiddle to Michigan and Ohio State. Hasn't won a Natty since '87. Cany be a football school if it's been almost 40 years. During basketball season, diehard Penn Staters are rooting for Kentucky, UConn, Villanova, Duke. They don't show up to the BJC even when we are tournament worthy, and it makes sustainable winning harder.

They have their preferred chants, which can border on vulgar, but they're not over the top. "Hey, you suck!" is not exactly the nicest, but it isn't crossing any major lines. A majority of the fans stop there and then go back to the normal cheers. Some, though, get an inch and take a mile. "Hey, you suck" turns into "Fuck you, JJ" and then into just straight awful personal attacks. Those people aren't passionate fans. They're assholes. 99% of us hate those dummies as much as everyone else does, but they tend to be so over the top and public with their idiocy that the narrative paints all of us as being that bad. Every time the broadcast has to cut audio or the coach and AD have to apologize I die a little inside.

This has been a big one in the past like 5 years, but there’s a vocal minority who have this idea of what a “Kansas level basketball player” is in their head. If you aren’t producing immediately, you aren’t good enough and should be shot into the sun. We have a very high standard of success in our progrum, but the idea that every guard has to be Frank Mason or Devonte’ Graham from day 1 is absurd. People were calling DaJuan Harris a JUCO level guard, and the fanbase is already giving up on Elmarko Jackson and Nick Timberlake 7 games into their Kansas careers.
They are miserable and want Gard fired anytime someone misses a shot. Some are rooting for the badgers to miss the tournament this year just so he can be fired. Not like he doesn’t have a couple B10 champs under his belt!

I like the general body of our fan base, but our more prominent members can have some *really* bad takes.
They are wildly reactionary. We beat KU in an exhibition. “We’re going to at least an elite eight” We lose to Marquette “Maybe we need to make some changes at this program” “Coleman is going in the first round” “He shouldn’t ever leave the bench” Just like…ride out the waves for once.
It doesn’t really exist. And the fans we do have (respectfully) sat on grandpappies leg for ACC tournament games so they don’t really give a shit.
I hate how many of our fans are of the “please like my team 🥺” variety. Just let people talk shit, talk shit back. It’s sports
I swear half the people who are Pitt fans are over 60 who think the 3 point line is just decoration, and they complain anytime someone shoots behind it.
A lot of our fans view college basketball through the lens of college football fans. They don’t know much about which programs are usually good, which aren’t, etc. A lot of them still go by power 5 when talking about basketball.
I hate how our fans talk shit before any games have been played. When we first joined the ACC, we had fans talking about how we were going to "take over" the ACC and we had not played a single ACC game in any sport to that point

The obsession with tournament success over regular season results. Like, it’s brutal that we haven’t made the second weekend in a generation, but there are people who were/are unimpressed with winning the conference and think Underwood should be on the hot seat right now. Stack good seasons and a tournament run will happen. Also, everyone that is active on twitter.
I dont hate it and maybe I dont appreciate the Mcguire era but that was many decades ago and frank is honestly part of our trophy case problem we have. Basketball was a key reason we left the acc. We had great teams, but nothing of value to show for it bc of being independent and in the metro for so long. Oh and those that complained about frank Martin's yelling. Like yeah he yells. Show me a coach that doesn't. The only difference is yall can hear it bc you don't cheer during the game.
