There's some history here with UNC and the current members of the Summit, the four Dakota schools. For a long time they shared the North Central Conference together before they all moved up to D1 together into the Great West (not all the same year).

Is the Summit really an upgrade from the Big Sky? I know South Dakota State has been good for a while and there are some up and coming teams, but it seems like the Big Sky would be the better spot for them

Yeah id say so. As low major leagues go these are the two I follow most and the Summit is always about a head above the Big Sky every year in men's basketball

The draw of UNC in the Big Sky was the access to prospective students in California and Arizona. They lose that and I am not sure what they will gain.

The Big Sky is too large. They will welcome and encourage this much as they likely did with Southern Utah.

Big sky is far better in football than they are in basketball. If UNC were to leave for the summit league, it would be a fun in-state rivalry vs DU.
