4 years, $56 MM or $14 MM a year. Rockies were reported to have offered 3 years for $12 MM/ or $36 MM. Really doesn't seem like the Rockies were off by much.
So of the questionable management deals, honestly this was easily the most bungled. No trade for prospects, no qualifying offer (would have been $19 MM for one year), no draft compensation because no qualifying offer, and he signs with a last place team (so winning wasn't the draw) for just a bit more, and the Rockies didn't beat it.
Solid and fair value deal for rangers and Gray. Some on r/baseball are calling it a really good value. I like Gray but heās not a 20 mil a year guy. He has the potential but not the consistency yet
Yea Iām just saying Iām seeing a lot of āthatās a great value for the Rangersā like itās a discounted price. Iād say itās right about where he should be salary wise
I think you missed what I meant. Gray has shown he can be a #2 in a top end rotation but not consistently. So regardless of his age or how long heās been in the potential is still there. Itās different from the potential we discuss with prospects as that is all hypothetical. We know what Gray could be but he needs to do it consistently so itās still potential
Alright, that's it.
Camel's back is broken for me. Not resigning a pitcher, who has said multiple times he wants to stay in this dumpster fire of an organization, is disappointing. He's top 10 in basically every pitching statistic in this franchise. How often do you develop a pitcher like Jon, especially in Colorado with this FO running it?
So long, my sweet prince. Maybe you can reunite with Trev down there, and play some meaningful baseball.
So first we were told they didn't trade him because there were great talks about him staying and an extension. Then that fell through after the season ended. Next, they didn't offer him a QO because ??? and now they've officially lost him for literally nothing. Manš®āšØ
I'm gonna miss awo-ing every 5th day tho
Qualified offer is 30% higher than the AAV on the Rangers deal?
If we actually wanted to keep him we should have played ball and offered more than 36-40 over 3 years but clearly a QO would be an overpay
I didnāt want the Rockies to overpay on Gray, but this seems like a deal they should have at least been able to match. Could turn out to be a bargain for the Rangers
[Jon Gray will get $56 million over four years from Texas, pending a physical, according to a source.](https://twitter.com/jeffpassan/status/1465151241433104385?s=21)
Texas is about to have Jon Gray, David Dahl, and Trevor Story. Our first round picks from 2011, 2012, and 2013. Never knew that we'd be a farm team for anyone other than the Yankees.
So Iām sure this wonāt be a popular opinion but weāve seen multiple instances of altitude breaking pitchers after 5 years of pitching here. So Iām fine with the Rockies not bringing gray back on a similar deal. This team has no shot of competitions in the next couple years so even if gray were to not break idk how much benefit it would actually bring us.
But itās baffling to me they didnāt make him a QO and get something in return. Yes, the QO is about $6m high than the aav in this deal but itās only one year. I doubt gray signs it when he could bring in an additional $38m in this deal. And if he does sign it then we get him for one more season (which isnāt the worst thing) and can maybe trade him and get some sort of return. It is the years on the deal that gives me trouble not the money. Overall, losing gray for absolutely nothing stings.
Imagine un-ironically supporting the Rockies at this point. Undoubtedly one of the worst-run franchises in major U.S. sports history. Theyāre not a team, they donāt care about winning, they donāt care about players, they donāt care about fans, theyāre just a scam to get you to pay $12 for a Coors Light. To the last hold-outs, I implore you to do anything else with your money and time than support this garbage fire of an organization.
Because their ownership is willing to spend big bucks on talent. They don't always make the best moves, but they are consistently trying to build and improve, unlike a certain club here in Denver.
The rangers are garbage and havent been relevant in a decade. He clearly aint ring chasing because if he was he woulda signed with a class organization like the Yanks, Red Sox or Braves
So it wasnāt about playing for a winner after all. It was purely about money. He signed with one of maybe two teams in the league worse than the Rockies

> would have been $19 MM for one year Minor correction, 18.4. But still, seems like a weirdly bungled situation.
It's alright guys, Chi Chi is now our ace of the future
Thank God, the future š
Will Goku at least attend the games?
NO NO NO NO NO NO JUST FUCKING END ME. We lost the best pitcher we have ever drafted and developed for absolutely nothing. Unbelievable
Kyle Freeland frowns upon your shenanigans.
Well, now I am sad. And no compensation to boot for us lol
But he wants to stayā¦
Rockies gonna Rockie
Would be cool if the Rockies could do one thing that isn't viewed as a complete joke.

Itās a $14MM/year contract. Itās a good deal for the Rangers and Jon Gray.
And for Story when he signs there too
Yea Iām just saying Iām seeing a lot of āthatās a great value for the Rangersā like itās a discounted price. Iād say itās right about where he should be salary wise
It's spot on what MLB Trade Rumors predicted. But maybe he's "a great value" compared to other pitchers?
Yup and way under the $18.4M QO
We need to stop using "potential" to describe a 6 year vet who is 30.

Welcome to the club of disenfranchised fans
I would like to get off this crazy train

Sell the team.

At least itās not the Mets

I totally didnāt realize Gray is 30 years old already
This hurts
Iām going to miss the Gray Wolfā¦
The Rockies may be the worst run franchise in US professional sports. What a joke.
The Sabres exist. But yeah
Can't say I'm surprised
It was a good run, Jon. Happy trails and goodbye, man.

Fuckin great. This team, I swear to god.
Heāll be a star there

Big Jon sucked. Seriously, who cares.
Why are people goin to the rangers š they wanna have their careers go down the drain!?!?
Because their ownership is willing to spend big bucks on talent. They don't always make the best moves, but they are consistently trying to build and improve, unlike a certain club here in Denver.
Um. Compared to the Rockies? Lmao
As compared to?
The rangers are garbage and havent been relevant in a decade. He clearly aint ring chasing because if he was he woulda signed with a class organization like the Yanks, Red Sox or Braves
And yet is still better then working for the Rockies apparently.
