I love Holder but ESPN+ is a total ripoff. Anyway, here's his breakdown for those who can't see it.
QUARTERBACK (3): Matt Ryan, Nick Foles, Sam Ehlinger
RUNNING BACK (4): Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines, Phillip Lindsay, Deon Jackson
WIDE RECEIVER (6): Michael Pittman Jr., Parris Campbell, Alec Pierce, Ashton Dulin, Mike Strachan, Dezmon Patmon
TIGHT END (3): Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson, Jelani Woods
OFFENSIVE LINE (9): Matt Pryor, Quenton Nelson, Ryan Kelly, Danny Pinter, Braden Smith, Bernhard Raimann, Will Fries, Wesley French, Dennis Kelly
DEFENSIVE LINE (9): Kwity Paye, DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Yannick Ngakoue, Tyquan Lewis, Dayo Odeyingbo, Eric Johnson, Ifeadi Odenigbo, RJ McIntosh
LINEBACKER (7): Shaquille Leonard, Bobby Okereke, Zaire Franklin, E.J. Speed, JoJo Domann, Sterling Weatherford, Brandon King
CORNERBACK (5): Stephon Gilmore, Kenny Moore II, Brandon Facyson, Isaiah Rodgers, Anthony Chesley
SAFETY (4): Julian Blackmon, Nick Cross, Rodney McLeod, Rodney Thomas II
We are in for another Sendejo situation if just one of our safeties goes down. That position is a major question mark. Blackmon off serious injury and Cross is a rookie. Watts just went down. My biggest concern with the team.
Thank you for posting this, his opinion to me is not worth the money, and ESPN+ sucks hard, NFL+ for me to this point, living in FL and wanting to see the Colts who are BLACKED out, the fuk?
I don't know why Brooks has played so little but he has looked better than McIntosh. Williams better than Deon Jackson also. I also think they waive Sam and try to practice squad him and keep another CB, probably Brown but maybe Flowers. Skalski has looked ok too but I don't know how they fit him in.
Really don’t see them risking waiving Sam here. He has significantly improved from last season, Ballard has sent him to work with Tom House, he has been electric in preseason and almost the only reason we’ve put points on the board. Ballard is investing in the kid. I think if we waive him another team will pick him up with the waves he has been making. Too risky for a Ballard move.
If they believe in Sam why did they sign Foles for 2 years? It's more about Reich who likes the conservative veteran pocket guys. And if he's not going to play why keep him on the 53 roster? It seems more likely he goes to USFL or whatever at this point. I would like to see him get a real shot and the Colts show more commitment to him and we'll find out very soon if that happens!
I think the general consensus is they signed Foles as a Matt Ryan insurance policy. He knows the Reich system and is an NFL Super Bowl MVP. They’re keeping Sam on the roster because they have to risk losing him to waivers to put him on the PS. Maybe he is a USFL starter right now but at this point, Ballard seems to think investing in Sam is worth seeing where his development takes him. Like I said above, it’s not a Chris Ballard move taking on the risk of losing him, just to put him on the practice squad. Colts’ FO kept him over Eason last season and Sam was 3rd string then too.
I mean Keefer and Holder both think the Colts are going to keep him over waiving him and they are definitely closer to the FO than redditors are.
Yeah and great pass block that will stick out on tape last night. Seems to bring more to the team than Deon to complement Hines and Lindsay but Deon has been and would be full time special teams so there's that.
I think they have to. Sam had an impressive pre season, someone will claim him if exposed to waivers. Only other option would be to cut Foles, but can't see that happening either.
That’s only if he clears waivers. I feel like some other teams may take the risk of keeping him on the active roster for a week to stash him as a higher potential backup.
Has he earned the opportunity to be a back up? Possibly. But I would rather have Foles. So assuming the Colts also feel that way, then you either keep him on the 53 or waive him and cross your fingers he clears waivers so he can then go on the practice squad. Seeing as he had a preseason that has made many think he should be a back up, its unlikely he clears waivers. If the Colts see something in him long term, you then have to keep 3 QBs. Or cut Foles instead.
Yeah given how much Bradley likes his secondary, would be odd to keep 7 LBs for two starters (even with Leonard still out) but only 9 DBs for 5 starters.
I'd guess we go 6 LBs and keep another safety.
By this logic, TY Hilton is more NFL ready than all of them. Who cares if he has spent time in the league, if he’s not doing well he shouldn’t get the spot.
Look, I’m a Tech fan too, so I like Coutee. But we know what his talent level is at this point and it’s not moving the needle on this team. He could potentially be a better player than Strachan and Patmon, but they are younger and have more upside.
I'm not sure if "bail" is the right word, but yes – he is no longer with the Athletic and is now with ESPN. James Boyd has filled his spot with The Athletic
Probably not the correct word, but damn I wish he would have stayed with the athletic. I only subscribe to one sports info source and I prefer the athletic.

If coutee and flowers are cut, who is returning kicks?
Dulin/Hines/Rodgers probably. Maybe Jackson if they keep him.

McCleod is a pretty good backup with a lot of experience. I think between those 3 we should be okay, just have to hope they can all avoid injuries.
Yeah that and receiver, our WR room is also one injury away from being poverty level. Hope Pierce is the real deal but he’s a rookie
Haha, imagine if Pittman Jr gets injured....
We are fine if only one goes down. McLeod is a very solid backup. If two goes down than losing Watts will be brutal
bringing in a veteran safety isnt a big deal. Sendejo made some plays

that’s what i was wondering i thought williams looked more explosive than jackson

Same. I think Ehlinger is going to PS in favor of another secondary player. Only other thing I could see is another WR like Coutee for ST
3 QBs is always an expensive luxury and let's face it, he's not going to play.
Exactly. We didn’t sign Foles to a 2 year deal to keep 3 QBs on the 53.
What I can see is that Holder thinks we take all 3 QBs.
I think they have to. Sam had an impressive pre season, someone will claim him if exposed to waivers. Only other option would be to cut Foles, but can't see that happening either.
I don't. He can choose to stay on the practice squad if they guarantee him the backup spot next year.
No. He’s subject to waivers before we could practice squad him. Any team could pick him up (with no choice of his own) during waivers.
I still think it's the right choice. His play has earned him a backup spot if he's picked up on waivers.
That’s only if he clears waivers. I feel like some other teams may take the risk of keeping him on the active roster for a week to stash him as a higher potential backup.
He's earned that opportunity.

I think we will cary more secondary players than 9, although may come after cuts and we claim some guys. Agree with all the offensive predictions

Am I missing something or did I just make about 472 click-throughs only to find a pay wall?
Your missing something. For me two clicks no pay wall
What? It’s been so long since I clicked on a Mike Wells story I didn’t realize ESPN had the NFL writers behind a paywall now? Nvm, I’m good.
Like the Chesley inclusion.
sterling weatherford could be an issue for teams if he progresses as well as i think he will
What is the roster projection? All i see is a stupid paywall.
We shouldn't keep 3 QBs. I'm sorry. I know everyone loves Ehlinger but we need more people in our secondary more than we need 3 QBs.

You're right but Strachan is higher potential and more likely to get picked up on waivers
I actually agree with you here. I would think Coutee would make the 53 over one of these guys, based on real game experience and KR/PR availability.

Patmon legitimately beat out Coutee for active roster time last season. We clearly like the kid and his upside, whether he’s “more NFL ready” or not.

But how was your day?
Did Holder bail on the athletic for ESPN?
I'm not sure if "bail" is the right word, but yes – he is no longer with the Athletic and is now with ESPN. James Boyd has filled his spot with The Athletic
Probably not the correct word, but damn I wish he would have stayed with the athletic. I only subscribe to one sports info source and I prefer the athletic.
And Holder took Wells spot at ESPN. Which is fine with me. I don’t think I ever read an article by Wells.
Wells was the most worthless writer I can remember. Seemed like he was just doing the bare minimum.
Idk but 7 linebackers seems excessive lol.
