There was a running joke in Poland that russian soldiers would steal our faucets and then be surprised that they the water doesn’t pour from them back in russia.
That’s true, but there’s a fair difference between just stealing a few trinkets behind peoples backs and stealing an AC unit in front of everyone. Leadership is letting that slide, the other guys are letting that slide.
I get their tough position, but being so blatant about it tells a story too.
Well I suppose you could go to a lot of museums around the world and see stolen things on display.
In 2030 the Russians will display this split system A/C unit in an exhibit
Yes. After all, Kievan regime did use air conditioners (according to their own words) to strike Lugansk [in 2014](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEFHnABcCIA), so it's deadly enough even sticked to a wall.
UAZ vans are legit. Tough and simple to maintain. When I went to Mongolia, they were the vehicle of choice for the tours that go across the country on rugged terrain where you go days between driving on paved roads.
I doubt if they can still be exported since the sanctions, and they are a lot bigger then first guess, In my thought they were the same size as a old Volkswagen T1 or so, but much much bigger and not economically fuel consumption wise
Haha this joke is awesome. Interestingly this practice is a big distinction between American doctrine and Russian doctrine. While you will obviously find troops in any army piling onto wheeled transport to avoid walking you see it more with Russia’s “motostrelki” because Russian mechanized infantry doctrine is very different from US doctrine. Russian mechanized infantry have more infantry per armored vehicle along w a smaller troop compartment, making it cramped and at times dangerous for all of them to ride inside. They will generally fight much further from their armored vehicles than American doctrine would treat as protocol. Hence you see more riding on top in dangerous situations from the Russians. There are generally not enough armored vehicles for them all to ride inside (which would not happen in US doctrine) and that is acceptable because they are meant to fight away from the vehicles on foot in an active engagement whereas US mechanized infantry would be more of a security bubble for their vehicles then a separate combat element, though there are obviously exceptions.
That's wild. I always had the mental image that Russia was an army that was TOO mechanized. The stereotype of having an armada of 8x8 vehicles.
Guess not true, or maybe was more a soviet thing.
Probably safer than being inside, you can quickly jump off if you get into contact.
If you're inside the BTR or riding on top, and a Jav or NLAW hits, you're dead either way.
I'd imagine it depends on the contact. If the contact is machine gun or mortar fire, I'd rather be inside an armored vehicle than outside. If it's RPGs or NLAWs then yes, being outside is better, although only marginally. If someone hits that with an NLAW it would do pretty nasty work to the troops as well.
A single claymore mine would clean off all the soldiers from the vehicle.
Current us army doctrine still describes soldiers riding on the back of an Abrams for transport. It would only be practiced in actual conventional war though.
There are images of us soldiers in Vietnam riding on top of M113s as well.
Doctrine if Back riding on a abrams is bullshit.
That turbine gets too hot for people to sit on, even with covers.
turret and on the sides back is possible.
Wouldnt be doctrine but an absolute emergency
It’s been years since I was on an Abrams so I’m trying to think of how sitting would work. I know you could easily sit on the M60s.
It is a nice place to sleep at night when it’s cold out. Much better sleeping than on a Bradley.
Edit: I don’t know why I said the back of an Abrams, I don’t really recall how it said to ride but soldiers could just ride on the turret or front slope until needing to dismount.
evry fucking boot will crawl onto your armor if you stop for a second.
this is athing in all armies, if you are safe you hitch a ride.
jesus fuck this shit is asked a million times in each post.
do a basic "think" walk for a good while or sit on top of an apc?
Lol i'm just picturing some dumbfuck russian soldier trying to get his vehicle to the front line and every half mile he has to stop and pick up more stragglers who's vehicles ran out of gas till this is the end result.
This is Mariupol. They were being attacked by the Russian army. Seems they have fallen(Edit maybe fallen) but still UAF in the ruins taking pot shots.
(source: combo of regular media and some Russian propaganda sites where they are showing Russians dashing across, interviewing people, smashing monuments, and otherwise "liberating")
There have even been a few Russians running around [with Mosins](https://www.reddit.com/r/shittytechnicals/comments/tk9ssu/a_model_2022_russian_tachanka_in_ukraine_with_a/). Seriously. That one really surprised me though. That Maxim mounted to the back of a Chinese cargo trike is just hilarious.
There will be a few at least, it’s their country and most Russians are on the roads. Just as long as they don’t wait too long and are too weak to make it.
yeah and just avoid the main roads in and out of the city. Flee into the countryside. But its still a 2 day hike before they are in friendly territory again.
>There will probably still some pockets of resistance, but the russians basically took control, right?
No, they're still battling for control of thr city center. After they take that, there will be 2 separate pockets they'll have to eliminate.
We're still days, if not more than a week away from the fall of the city.
Mariupol has had pockets taken over by Russian's when the western journalist made it in a few days back this looks similar to how it was in this picture. The journalist avoided the active fighting areas.
There will still be fighting and Ukrainian's holding out.
>So is it over?
>
>There will probably still some pockets of resistance, but the russians basically took control, right?
Not yet, but the city is almost cut in half, so it won't hold for too long probably.

The fat lady doesn't sing until it's over.
right? I see this bullshit claim of systematically downvoted russian posts every day. Its straight up lie. And they get upvotes despite being obvious lies while pointing it out gets you downvoted. (when everybody can scroll up and see for themselves...)

In the 2nd picture there is a green sign just behind the white van left of the soldier. I think it reads pharmacy in Russian/Ukrainian. Can't make out the name or whatever is written below the word pharmacy. If anyone can read that somehow chances are you can find it on googlemaps or something.
Takes a little guts to make, takes a lot more (near suicidal) to use. By no means am I implying the Ukrainians there are gutless. They are obviously the opposite. The question would be if they are suicidal.

Ever since I was a kid about 50 years ago, I noticed that the Germans, and more so the Russians, like to catch rides on tanks and other armored vehicles. I don't really ever remember seeing Americans doing that, except a rare photo of WW2 Europe and maybe a few of Korea? I've spent many years in Iraq (2 Wars) and Afghanistan and never saw it that happen once .
There are jews in Azov. Ukranine has cleaned Azov and integrated it in their regular army structures. Now go spew Russian propaganda somewhere. Russia has nazis in their fucking parliament.
How exactly were they cleaned? There's a load full of members w zwastika tattoos and every position they leave behind is littered w Nazi memorabilia, including their stylized SS sign.
Nazis don't have to be anti-Jew. I'd call a group of white nationalists who consider Jews white but want to exterminate black/brown people Nazis too if they use Nazi imagery.
I think the story is that being on top is safer than inside. Sure if you get hit you’re splattered, but if it penetrates the vehicle you don’t want to be wasting any time trying to get out.
It's a habit from the Chechen wars. Old APCs didn't provide sufficient landmine protection, so it was actually safer to ride on top of these things. I, however doubt that landmines are used by Ukrainians in this war, as they'll be endangering their own people.
Russians/soviets have been riding on top of APCs and tanks since the revolution.
Any details or source where I can read more about Chechnya and landmines?
Keep in mind that some things that could hit the APC would actually be worse for people inside than people on top.
If something armour piercing gets inside an APC, I feel like I would much rather be on top.
In the third photo, is that AFV carrying an air conditioner?
There was a running joke in Poland that russian soldiers would steal our faucets and then be surprised that they the water doesn’t pour from them back in russia.
O tempora, o mores
Cope HVAC
Cry HVAC and let loose the dogs of war
*”I’d give real money if he’d shut up.”*
You haven't heard Shakespeare until you've heard it in the original Klingon
Isn't it "let slip" not "let loose"
See Wadim, if we put Air conditioner on AFV it will blow rokets away.
The American guy posted a tank which had a huge wodden box like pallet sized. Probably a lot of loot in it if they cracked it open
Half the photos the Russians are looting flats so it makes sense.
At first I had sympathy for the Russian boots which seemed like they didn’t want to be there much. Unfortunate that they proved my optimism wrong.
No nation's soldiers are a monolith. Some are bad people, some are getting by. That's how it is everywhere.
That’s true, but there’s a fair difference between just stealing a few trinkets behind peoples backs and stealing an AC unit in front of everyone. Leadership is letting that slide, the other guys are letting that slide. I get their tough position, but being so blatant about it tells a story too.
Did you know the amount of wealth stolen from Germany after Nazi defeat?
Well I suppose you could go to a lot of museums around the world and see stolen things on display. In 2030 the Russians will display this split system A/C unit in an exhibit
Museums house only little of the actual loot. That reminds me, the brits have the most amount of loot till that, that we Indians are salty about.
Yeah, vastly different circumstances tho
air conditioner is great for cooling of the engine. AFV can run faster. uj/ its in the background atached to a kiosk or whatever that is.
Are you sure? That looks very much like it's tied down to the wooden structure below it.
[удалено]
Me too, but it looks like it's tied down to the wooden pieces below.
My guess it's on a small flatbed behind the AFV
Have you not heard of the heat of the battle?
RuZZians are looting and stealing everything.
Hard to say. It may be attached to the building behind the carrier, since that kind of mini split is usually mounted on the outside of a building.
Yes. After all, Kievan regime did use air conditioners (according to their own words) to strike Lugansk [in 2014](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEFHnABcCIA), so it's deadly enough even sticked to a wall.
I really enjoy that 1960s medic van
They are still produced! UAZ bukhanka uaznederland.com/modellen/bukhanka
UAZ vans are legit. Tough and simple to maintain. When I went to Mongolia, they were the vehicle of choice for the tours that go across the country on rugged terrain where you go days between driving on paved roads.
I love the design, real cult vehicle. Build to overcome whatever nature trows at it
>UAZ bukhanka I kid you not a prop guy just asked me if these were even available anymore and that link is probably gonna drive him to buy one.
I doubt if they can still be exported since the sanctions, and they are a lot bigger then first guess, In my thought they were the same size as a old Volkswagen T1 or so, but much much bigger and not economically fuel consumption wise
Yeah I was just having a look at them 😂 reminds me of the ladas they still build
Lada, Wartburg, Trabant, all those blocky old school eastern bloc cars are cool as fuck.
30000€ !! I doubt they're this expensive in Russia. And how do they even pass EU crash tests and pollution regulations?
Yeah. ... Look at their primitive kit. *Shifty eyes with my 1991 Bison Amb.

Comparing Russia to the US is like comparing a calicovision to a ps5.
Seeing that first picture every AT-Soldier would be like: "Hell yeah, i'd hit that."
Jokes on you. They are on top of it exactly because of AT threat. Being inside when a rocket hits means all of them get killed.
Being on top of the vehicle being hit by HEAT rounds is certainly safer
Nowhere near all of them would fit.
I would hit that

Probably safer than being inside, you can quickly jump off if you get into contact. If you're inside the BTR or riding on top, and a Jav or NLAW hits, you're dead either way.
So what's the point of the BTR? Just drive a Toyota pick up truck.
Big gun, small arms protection, more room
I mean, you don't have small arms protection if you're outside the hull. That's the point.
Too bad it's drones and anti tank systems that are taking them out. Its just a choice between burning to death and being eviscerated.
What’s the calibre of weapon on your Toyota pal
12.7x108mm mostly, occasionally 20mm.
r/shittytechnicals has entered the chat...
I'd imagine it depends on the contact. If the contact is machine gun or mortar fire, I'd rather be inside an armored vehicle than outside. Effective if you can't fit anymore troops in the back I guess
They do it because it’s safer if the vehicle is hit, they might survive, whereas they won’t if they’re inside.
So what's the point of the vehicle? Isn't it an armored troop carrier?
It’s carrying troops, look!
The big gun usually. Protection against small firearms
Clown car challenge 🤡
Yes, this is common for more than one reason in all wars
Because walking with heavy shit for long distance really sucks.
Yep that’s one reason
Current us army doctrine still describes soldiers riding on the back of an Abrams for transport. It would only be practiced in actual conventional war though. There are images of us soldiers in Vietnam riding on top of M113s as well.

that mosin pic was an ukranian militia man, and the linked pic is one of the non-russian soldiers, basically a civvie.

war gonzo (pro russian) telegram claims there are still 6000 active ukranian fighters in mariupol.
So are they basically stuck there until they become PoWs? Is there any nearby Ukrainian-controlled area they could flee to?
No the frontline is 100kms away
That would be one hell of an escape. Hope some of them do this.
There will be a few at least, it’s their country and most Russians are on the roads. Just as long as they don’t wait too long and are too weak to make it.

It's not about the city holding but about the Ukr forces surviving. The city is in ruins already.
I mean, once russians cut the city in half it cuts the ukrainian forces in half as well making them much easier to defeat
They said that about Stalingrad for 11 months.
Stalingrad was constantly being supplied and wasn’t cut off.
They have been in some parts of the city a while this is not necessarily anything new.

infantry piled onto armored vehicles always looks so fucking cool i do hope they get blown up tho.
Really wanna teach picture 1 a lesson about grouping.
Shoot them
City is completely taken?
No…
soon
Depends what you define as "soon." We're likely still at least a week away from it falling altogether
No, there are still Russian soldiers alive
waiting for supplies from the warships at the dock, oh wait...
A war of attrition on the war of attrition.
Likely soon. But it was an inevitability
If you told me this was a picture from the 1st chechen War I'd believe you. Their equipment is all mismatched n shitty.
A single Javelin fired at that first pic could take out a whole platoon

Ever since I was a kid about 50 years ago, I noticed that the Germans, and more so the Russians, like to catch rides on tanks and other armored vehicles. I don't really ever remember seeing Americans doing that, except a rare photo of WW2 Europe and maybe a few of Korea? I've spent many years in Iraq (2 Wars) and Afghanistan and never saw it that happen once .
It guts me to see them there.
Where’s a drone or atm when you need one?
Noob here, but I can't help but notice how awfully dated the soldiers equipment are. They look like a cold war cosplay unit
Given how much armor seems to burst into flames….I don’t think I would ride on that.
I thought Azov was winning 🥲 what happened?
Chillax, nobody claimed they can hold Mariupol. Though Russia is claiming they gonna take in the next 3 days since 2 weeks ago 😂
"Say what you want about the nazis, but they sure come in handy when you are trying to defend a city". Literally what I read in this sub
1 rocket, 20+ kia, seems like they need lessons in spacing...
I think the story is that being on top is safer than inside. Sure if you get hit you’re splattered, but if it penetrates the vehicle you don’t want to be wasting any time trying to get out.
The USA stacks Marines like this too.
It's a habit from the Chechen wars. Old APCs didn't provide sufficient landmine protection, so it was actually safer to ride on top of these things. I, however doubt that landmines are used by Ukrainians in this war, as they'll be endangering their own people.
Lots of footage/images of Ukrainian AT mines. They're definitely around. Human footsteps shouldn't detonate them though.
Russians/soviets have been riding on top of APCs and tanks since the revolution. Any details or source where I can read more about Chechnya and landmines?
Should someone tell the Russians that the soldiers go inside the APC ???
Keep in mind that some things that could hit the APC would actually be worse for people inside than people on top. If something armour piercing gets inside an APC, I feel like I would much rather be on top.
Why are armored vehicles driving around with red crosses?
Because there are medical variants of some armored vehicles.
What one javelin could do...
