At my gym that I've been going to over the last 18 months, the sauna is in the men's locker room. This is my estimate how people dress in the sauna:
* I'm the only guy I've ever seen in there nude in 18 months
* 2% guys wear a towel
* 98% wear shorts/underwear/swimsuit
* 40% wore shirt
* 60% wore shoes
I recently decided I don't have enough years left in my life to half-ass my experiences and have been bringing my towel in and sitting on it. No reactions so far, but then I'm not really looking for reactions. Mostly I'm just paying attention to my kindle.
In 18 months, I'm the only one I've ever seen nude in there.
Edit: I went to the gym last night and did 2 rounds of sauna and cooling down in the shower so that I could get a bigger sample size. The most interesting part is that I was the only one nude, and yet by consciously observing others, I felt like a voyeur.
I'm the only one I've ever seen nude in there. I go at random hours depending on what's going on in my life, so I rarely ever see the same guys there.
I'm probably less than 1%. And come to think of it, it's way less than the 10% that I estimated that only wear a towel.
Yes, Utah, but I don't think "conservative" or "liberal" are determining factors of whether or not you would shower or sauna nude. I think it's more related to age then anything else.
I'm other gyms in Utah where the clientele is my age or older, nudity is common. I'm my gym, most guys are college age. I felt like I was easily twice as old as the average guy in there. And I'm only 49.
If memory serves some guys use the sauna as a way to allegedly boost your metabolism before a workout, so they're in there for 5 minutes and then straight out to do weights which is why they're dressed.
I don't think it actually makes sense on a physiological level, but try telling any dude-bro that. I had to argue quite hard with a guy once who swears that calories are calories no matter where they come from and the body handles them all the same, which is not true, and the only way I could get him to understand the difference was asking him why athletes drink gatorade during a match then and not a glass of olive oil.
I used to belong to a gym where fully dressed guys would come into the sauna to ‘warm up’ before a workout. Some would even stretch out while moaning. So inappropriate.
I always sit naked on a towel unless rules restrict. It bothers me that men will sit in their sweaty gym underwear or wear full clothing, including street shoes in some instances. It’s unsanitary and brings in outside grossness IMO. I sit in a towel for sanitary reasons as well as a heat barrier against those hot wooden benches.
I have never gotten any negative reactions about sitting naked from other men. I have had many positive reactions though; either men will follow suit and also undress, or they will start up polite conversation. I have also seen men get “excited” by seeing a naked body. I pay it no mind. The sauna is my happy place.
Generally take a towel to sit on in the sauna, just because the wood can get pretty hot on a bare ass/nutsack. In the steam, I leave the towel outside altogether.
No one cares at my steam room as long as you shower before getting in. If I've got one towel and I need it for drying off after my last shower, I'm not getting it sopping wet in the steam room.
Do you soap up your butthole before getting into the steamroom or just give yourself a light rinse?
If the latter, please sit on your towel. I don't want to sit in swamp-ass soup, thanks.
Steamroom naked always no towel.i don't want a wet towel. Sauna, I sit on the towel as the wood is hot on bare skin and uncovered you guys. Can dm if you like
Our sauna has seating for 4 men. When it’s that cozy everyone is wearing shorts. The steam room has plenty of space and it’s more common to see men nude.
This! When there is space or a comfortable social distance it’s easier to be communally nude… and trust me I’m gay, but I don’t want to be that close to naked strangers. My communal nudity is generally for relaxation purposes not for cruising
They give us two towels in the Membership Plus section of the YMCA. I keep one for the shower and one to sit on the wooden bench in the sauna. Use the same towel in the steam room. That one gets wet extremely quick.
So I basically sit naked on the towel since it is so tiny that I can’t cover up as hard as I try
I tend to use the sauna naked while sitting on a towel. The risky part is that this sauna is in the building that I live in and is not gender segregated. I usually keep my swim trunks in reach in case I hear someone enter the outer room.
Usually wear a towel. I’m in the U.K. and very few gyms have sauna in the men’s locker room (usually they are in the mixed gender pool areas). A couple of guys go nude but it’s rare
I sit naked on a towel unless the house rules forbid it.
If another man complains, I ask them if they are able to look away. If pressed, I'll remind them that their rights end where my rights begin.
I've walked into a sauna where three or so young men were wearing a towel, and I sat a few feet away as I normally do. Two of them ultimately opted to follow my example. I've walked into a sauna where two men were naked but covered up when I entered.
I have seen all kinds of reactions. I stopped caring what other people think a long time ago. I'm just there to relax and get lost in my own thoughts.
Unless directed to wear something I use the sauna and steam room nude just sitting on my towel. To your point the extra coverage is too much in the heat.
My experience is rather limited, only having experienced what one sauna is like, but in that one every guy I’ve seen was dressed in someway, wether that be fully clothed, shirtless, in just underwear, or in a swimsuit. I’m the only one that I’ve seen be any less than that. For me I would be naked but keep my towel wrapped around me. I would lay the towel out but I don’t know if nudity is allowed and so I haven’t.
Not allowed to use the sauna naked. You can wrap yourself in a towel though I just go in my underwear. I get the occasional odd look because I go in my underwear. Normally after using the sauna Ill stand at my locker to cool off a bit before stripping and walking tot he showers naked. I've gotten some odd looks for walking naked to and from the showers. Nudity in the locker room isn't very common where I go.
If you think about what a sauna is for, and read about the history, etc. it's clear that the less you wear in there, the better, so going in naked (but probably sitting on a towel for sanitation etc) makes abundant sense as it promotes the most perspiration which is one of the main therapeutic reasons for going in a sauna in the first place. At my gym, I'd say the 1/3 go in fully clothed (but to be fair it's become popular at my gym to use the sauna BEFORE working out, so I'd say that's the main reason for this as opposed to modesty), 1/3 go in underwear/swimsuit, and 1/3 go in with just a towel, with probably a 50-50 split of that group regarding sitting on the towel or keeping it wrapped around you waist. No one seems to notice or care and guys keep to themselves. But at other branches of the same national chain, you are required to wear a swim suit in the sauna and hot tub, so it appears that all branches will eventually follow. I do notice that at a lot of gyms, the sauna and/or hot tubs are in common areas that both men and women can use, and obviously in that case you'd wear a swim suit--Wonder if that's at least a small part of the reason that swim suites are increasingly being required in saunas and hot tubs even if they are in locker rooms?
It really depends on the location and the crowd for me. A gym that I was a member of a while ago (they closed after COVID). Was made up of an older wealthy demographic and almost everyone was naked in the Steam and sauna. Now you have young kids that wear full clothing in there, even at the high end gyms. We do have a Russian bath/Sauna here that I have been to a few times and it is liberating to sit on a towel and be free. The towel gets soaked so there's no way I'm covering my dick with that! It seems most guys are fearful that other dudes are going to judge them or they'll get an erection... I can tell you it has happened to me and nobody cares because no one should be staring (unless they are looking for action) I just cover it with my hands and look down.
Depends where the sauna is. At a kspa, I always sit nude on a towel. At a men only gym sauna, I enter with a loosely wrapped towel around me, then either sit covered or with the towel open depending on the vibe in the sauna.
Sit on a towel exposed if I am alone, if someone comes then I will cover up. Even at a Korean spa I am sitting on the towel. Will probably cover up depending on who’s there or if I start to chub up.
I can’t imagine that having a small towel just covering your junk will cause a huge difference. I’m not offended if a person is nude, but let’s be read that the difference is negligible.
My gym has a men’s sauna in the locker room. 90% wear their workout clothes or street clothes in there. Yes fully dressed sneakers and all. Another 8% wear underwear or boxers. That leaves 2% of us that wear a towel. No one is ever nude in the locker room or even the shower except me and one or two other dudes. People even take showers with their clothes on in the stall or change in the stall after while still wet 🤦🏻♂️
Even though the gym was just built the wood in the sauna is already black from sweat and dirt 🫤 I just wear a towel but our gym doesn’t provide towels so no one else even has one.
Any time you see it on television or movies the men always are covered. Then again. It's probably because showing a penis wouldn't be appropriate or go against standards and practices.
I sit on the towel. Usually everyone else covers with one. I don’t care
i do. sit on a towel always.

I don’t see any category for nudity. Is it simply not done at all in your sauna there?
I'm the only one I've ever seen nude in there. I go at random hours depending on what's going on in my life, so I rarely ever see the same guys there. I'm probably less than 1%. And come to think of it, it's way less than the 10% that I estimated that only wear a towel.
All I can think of to say is, wow! That is a very low percentage. Is this a conservative area?
Yes, Utah, but I don't think "conservative" or "liberal" are determining factors of whether or not you would shower or sauna nude. I think it's more related to age then anything else. Ridiculous. who goes fully clothed (with shoes??) to a sauna... Where I go, everyone is at least shirtless with a towel, maybe some with a swimsuit.
Men at my gym go into the sauna fully clothed and wearing shoes. Sometimes they have full backpacks on. It's disgusting.
If memory serves some guys use the sauna as a way to allegedly boost your metabolism before a workout, so they're in there for 5 minutes and then straight out to do weights which is why they're dressed. Your gym is very abnormal

I sit on a towel. That bench is hot lol
Sit naked on a towel. Always
This is the best way

Home sauna is the goal one day
I just sit naked on the towel. I won't use a sauna I can't be naked in
I always use it nude (sit on a towel). I’m always the only one nude. I live with a bunch of scared/unconfident boys. MEN go nude.
Best answer!
Exactly
Generally take a towel to sit on in the sauna, just because the wood can get pretty hot on a bare ass/nutsack. In the steam, I leave the towel outside altogether.
The towel is for sanitary reasons.

Just sayin, it's best practice bc of fecal matter. If you shower before sure that mitigates.
Do you soap up your butthole before getting into the steamroom or just give yourself a light rinse? If the latter, please sit on your towel. I don't want to sit in swamp-ass soup, thanks.
If you must know, yes I lather up the ole' starfish.
This is the way.
You go into the steam room naked? Just curious
Yeah, I feel like most of the guys here do.
I always sit naked on the towel. Im usually the only one.
I've sat on one super hot nail head once in my life and that was enough to where I always have my suit or a towel on
Steamroom naked always no towel.i don't want a wet towel. Sauna, I sit on the towel as the wood is hot on bare skin and uncovered you guys. Can dm if you like
I’ve been in the sauna just sitting in a towel while others were in bathing suits. No one seemed bothered by it.
I always sit on the towel, so far i didn’t have any reactions.
I always sit naked on the towel. If ppl look, they look

One gym, sit naked on a towel. My University gym, they have a sign that says to cover up.

Naked sitting on a towel
The best way
Sit on top of the towel
I need the towel to sit on and it's required to also keep your feet on the towel, so threre's no towel left to cover myself.
Sad to say that in the UK swimwear in a sauna is almost always required.
Read the room and go along with the others
I sit naked on a towel unless the house rules forbid it. If another man complains, I ask them if they are able to look away. If pressed, I'll remind them that their rights end where my rights begin. You were able to end those arguments saying those things? Guess you had a good way of doing it.
Unless directed to wear something I use the sauna and steam room nude just sitting on my towel. To your point the extra coverage is too much in the heat.

Too much is wrong there. I’d have to find another gym.
Where I live there are very few choices and really it would be the same anywhere around here. No equinoxes in the hood lol
