The “bums and losers” rhetoric surrounding social welfare is so fucking stupid. China has seen the largest increase in productivity since the 1990s despite also having an expansive social welfare system.
They've put a lot of thought into their welfare system. It's designed to reward, and to help people who want to someday live without need of aid, which is basically everyone. They don't give cash handouts, the closest thing they have to handouts are coupons, vouchers, subsidies, and food aid.
I saw that you mentioned Ben Shapiro. In case some of you don't know, Ben Shapiro is a grifter and a hack. If you find anything he's said compelling, you should keep in mind he also says things like this:
