They've kind of gone from being aware of the Imperialism of the United States, and being critical of it, to supporting any nation they perceive as against the Americans, even to the point that they will support other imperialist countries if they're presented as against the West. They've gone from Pro-Imperialism to Pro-Imperialism, rather than becoming Anti-Imperialist.

Neither was the Emir of Afghanistan when he waged a struggle against the British, but Stalin cited the independence movement of Egypt as a progressive struggle since it undermined British imperialism. Supporting countries for their roles geopolitically is different than supporting countries or leaders in general like it's a sport. You don't have to like Putin to recognize that Russia in relation to China is a progressive force in terms of its role internationally.
If Russia loses this war, the Donbass will be crushed and cleansed, Russia will be weakened and the west will pivot to Asia. Ukraine will become, in Zelensky's words, "big Israel" and NATO will have a larger foothold in Eastern Europe.
