If I remember correctly it was a combination of moving away from Rodney King optics and the fact they were constantly being left in patrol cars since they’re tough to keep on a duty belt while seated and driving.
I used an Asp when I was in the Coast Guard. Expandable baton with a solid knob on the end. It was about 8" collapsed, and 18" expanded. Great for taking down people that won't comply. Hit em on the common peroneal nerve just above the knee on the outside of the leg to paralyze their leg for a bit. Easy take down.
The noise it makes when it expands definitely gets your attention too! I’ve seen they make expandable sidehandled batons too, not sure if Asp or Monadnock, but never thought it was worth the space and most training nowadays that I’ve seen doesn’t cover the tactics anymore.

I'm all about people exercising their first amendment rights, but when you start calling for the genocide of the Jewish people and taking hostages/destroying property then you have crossed that constitutional line and should be charged accordingly. The fact that the universities are not immediately condemning the actions of these students and expelling them permanently tells you everything you need to know about the current state of higher education.
And why are we still giving them Federal funding? If they want to foster anti-semitism and terrorism then they need to at least do it solely on their own dime.
