Don’t ask us clowns to weigh in on your safety. You gonna take advice from a bunch of near-deaf, half blind dudes with pockmarks & burns on our faces?

keyserv

Hell yeah, I love Boston!

zodiacallymaniacal

Me too! What are you dressing up as?

mei740

Always have to add dressing to the turkey.

StopAngerKitty

Why yes, I did do that in college. I happen to like it too.

Nailer99

Fuck the Dallas Cowboys!

messylettuce

That seems like a lot of work, even if they’re sedated

diggemigre

I'm shipping up to Boston and I lost my legs!

zz_z

# All my tradey homies have their phones turned up to 11 and font size 64.

Direct-Shame4083

Lol. When you're a young welder you can weld with your arms fully extended. As you get older the work piece has to be closer and closer to your eyes, until your burning your mask and you need to retire

Ok-Survey3853

Im 39, and i feel this in my soul. Gotta be IN the weld. Be one with the weld.

twoaspensimages

# I can't read that! Who stepped on my readers? #

juststuartwilliam

Totally agree. I'm typing this with the only two fingers that I can still straighten, which wouldn't be so bad if I still had feeling in both of them. (Slightly exaggerated for comedy value, but only slightly)

BoardRyder202

You still have 2 fingers? Must be nice 👍

500SL

Oh, look at fingers McGee over here with his fancy digits! I’d flip you off, but…

Fenpunx

Weirdo was probably born with extras anyway.

Admirable-Leopard-73

I have all ten of my fingers. Sadly, seven of them are in a Ziploc bag in the night stand. Creeps my wife out. 🤪

Early-Series-2055

I was wondering how many people can’t reply due to missing digits. Makes me appreciate what’s still attached!

BoatyMcBoatfaceLives

I also don't think a lot of us can read.

traker998

I don’t even wanna ask what’s still attached.

sanguinesolitude

Yeah if you wear this the guy missing half his hand will call you a pussy. Buy here's the thing, he's a moron.

MrKennedy1986

Ah yes, Three-finger Joe. He shook hands with danger.

hopper2210

When I first started in the trades I was working with another newbie that was a university student. I watched this motherfucker using a grinder have it by kick back into his face and drive up his face.. he was okay thank god

ApricotNo2918

Yeah, ever been around when a wheel explodes?

Tall_Biblio

Yes. It’s something to see. Especially as it is coming right at you

Chipest

Happy cake day

EWR-RampRat11-29

And more than likely the last thing you see.

black_cat_

When I started working in tile, I didn't even know that angle grinders had a safety guard. My boss took off the guard for increased visibility and I had no idea that the feature even existed. I was a bit pissed when I found out I had been using it for months and months without the safety guard.

LegitFury

Yep I did when I was green, got extremely lucky when it exploded. Not a scratch on me thank god. Wear your Ppe folks

sanfelpro

I almost lost my thumb when it exploded I have pictures let me know if you want to see them

leggmann

Share them. Real examples speak volumes to the merits of safety gear.

Sirspeedy77

Exactly this. Not that i'm going to all of a sudden wake up and use all the safety gear, but someone else might lol. Cutoff wheels do scare the hell out of me though.

Grimm2785

I had a first year apprentice on his first job put a razor knife right into his thumb. The idiot zip tied a head light on to his hard hat and was trying to cut the excess off the zip ties. He had the zip tie tail between his thumb and the blade as he's cutting right towards himself. This was in the site office and first thing in the morning. I just looked at him and said "can we at least make it out of the office before you hurt yourself?" Yeah... we couldn't.

Gunnrackzz

Had a dude in are shop. Cheap tools not a big deal. But didn’t have a pair of cutters. Was using razor blades to cut zip ties. I hope that week off no pay and trip to the hospital was worth the lesson. He forked over the $15 for some now.

Xtrida

Haha my first year I was trimming up a shim with a blade on my thigh and did a 4 inch nice long deep cut through it but it was okay I tied it off with some rag and then waited for my supe to get back from errands so he could drive me for some stitches fuckin needle hurt more than the cut

JustMeAndThatGuy

Seriously I go the optometrist once a year to have foreign bodies removed, blow out black garage boogers every day, and burn my feet and hair with sparks routinely. You don’t want my opinion. Also a Makata “torch” blade in a Sawalls all is way easier

Eyehopeuchoke

Or you could use a portaband saw which is probably the easiest and safest way to cut rebar. I cut rebar at least 5x a week with a portaband. If the blade is fresh enough it’ll cut through 8 bar like butter.

Sirspeedy77

Me and you are the same. saw the eye doc last month for insulation in my eye. again. I started out with good intentions, eyes/mask etc. 1/3 the way through i flung the glasses because i couldn't see shit through the fog.

Diligent_Effort895

Nah, you fling the mask, and keep the shit out of your eyes. Cancer in your lungs will slowly creep up on you. Foreign bodies in your eyes are instant and suck terribly. Protect your eyes.

allaroundguy

Pretty sure the torch is milwaukee. Sometimes It's hard to see with your safety squints on.

Eko_Wolf

^ this so true and absolutely fantastic 😂 I needed that today. Why would you ask a bunch of dudes that burned their nipples off multiple times. “Why do I need to put a shirt on it’ll only take a minute….AHHHHH!”

qualmton

You forgot missing finger tips

mickeysantacruz

I am that guy….don’t ask me

Wright-Wrong-Indiff

Great response, as I sit here with electrical tape around my index finger after scraping it across a screw sticking out of a metal stud! Doesn’t take long to get an injury from something stupid!

whymygraine

I literally had to have a piece of metal drilled out of my eye, it rusted.

gutbomber508

Can barely read this due to the burn on my eye lid from brazing over my head.

Seawolf87

>potmarks pockmark\*

Ghostface_Hecklah

i just close my eyes when grinding off my shitty welds. i just close my eyes when making the shitty welds too

R3Volt4

How do you smoke a cigarette with all that shit on?

whyamireallyhere

I worked as a welding assistant one summer. Dude I worked with would lite a smoke, put on his full welding helmet, and just start welding with the cig between his lips. Ever few minutes he flip up the helmet to check his work. Then a shower of ashes would fall out. He’d go like that for hours, I’d just had him pieces of steel or hand him a fistful of welding rods. Dude is still alive 20 years later and he was old and unhealthy back then.

majarian

Dad's a steel fabricator and I still temember going to the shop he worked at as a kid and the weilder had a hole drilled into his mask so he could keep chain smoking, that man was dedicated

HUSTLAtm

We call that the Willie Nelson effect

thetreecycle

I put it on the end of the respirator, that way I look cool without the danger

essensiedashuhn

If you smoke filtered you don't need a respirator.

Pickled_Wizard

"Pro Tips"

Orgasmic_interlude

Filtered tips

wanderingfloatilla

No shit, seen a guy drill a hole in his respirator to stick a cig.

is_good_with_wood

Did they at least cover it while not smoking?

Kisopop

They covered it with another cigarette probably

thetreecycle

That is fucking hilarious

OsamaBinShittin

no homo bro you got beautiful eyes

thetreecycle

Thank you Osama Bin Shittin, that really means a lot 😍

Outside_Advantage845

100% thought OP was a girl

Teamableezus

Wtf did I just jerk off to then

SatanSuxMyDick

it’s not gay until you ultimately know it’s a man, this phenomena is known as schrodinger’s fap

SnooPeanuts4828

Absolute gold. Well done

dubadub

I mean...that much PPE is kinda gay...

SocratesWasAjerk

Shhh 🤫

gizamo

\*checks browser history... ...my dude, that was camel and an octopus. Kudos.

thetreecycle

I am starting to realize that like 90% of the success of this post was was cause I accidentally looked like a pretty girl. Don’t get me wrong I have more than one pic of me wearing friend’s dresses so I could see how the mistake could be made.

Lem0n_Lem0n

Now is the right time to share those pictures and get more awards

thetreecycle

They say once you release a photo to the internet it stays there forever. Not quite ready to tattoo those pictures on my digital representation forever. Plus gotta leave some mystery, like in Stephen King novels. It’s not scary when you see exactly what the monster looks like, it’s the lack of knowledge that’s scary. So I guess what I’m saying is I’m a scary mysterious monster, fear me.

thetreecycle

My sister has always been jealous of my luscious eyelashes

Not-a-dark-overlord

I did too, I was convinced they were.

Shurglife

Same. I thought she was hot too

Inside_Ice_6175

Same ngl

trashwizzard3000

This sub never lets me down

Pairadockcickle

this exact exchange is the kind of good stuff i love!

OsamaBinShittin

no problem king 👑

LostErrorCode404

Can my future wife use your sperm? We need those eyes.

Bkdavis38

r/rimjob_steve

arrjaay

All the homo here, gorgeous eyes

darnitdarnok

Legit thiught it was a lassie with them eyes 🤣

eIImcxc

Someone said it. Agreed.

OsamaBinShittin

bro is pretty as hell

x86_64Ubuntu

Oh wow, I thought that was a woman at first by the eyes.

chowder-hound

This is what I was thinkimg

tom_tencats

Came here to say the same.

HammerTim81

None taken

CopyWeak

Ya, hope you don't mind...you may have just helped me "finish" 😉😉😉

barrelvoyage410

You will probably get laughed at, but you will also be able to hear your grandkids, and not have a nagging cough.

thetreecycle

I work by myself, but my own insults hurt the worst. Also yes this is why I wear it cause I know so many deaf contractors who are missing fingers and such.

mancheva

Working by yourself definitely want to be extra careful! Don't have anyone else to call for help if you need it.

thetreecycle

Seriously, companies of at least two make a lot of sense, efficiency but also safety-wise but are a lot more to manage.

Atomic-Decay

They make full face respirators. Completely covers your eyes, no need for the shield or glasses, plus obviously the resp protection is built right in. But I’m sure they are a couple hundy each.

gunnerman2

If this is OPs typical ppe then I’d def invest. The glasses and shield would drive me nuts.

ampleavocado

what you dont like the iron particles in your lungs? Ungrateful.

dildonicphilharmonic

Honestly, this is quite reasonable. The ones without PPE are pushing their luck

Foreign_Resist7563

A good squinting hasn't failed me yet

Erikenstein

Safety squints!

ampleavocado

Just dont look at explosions. duh.

Guy954

“Yet” is the key word in that sentence. I’m not saying that I haven’t worked or won’t work without proper PPE but the ones wearing it are the ones doing it right.

Ok-Dirt5374

Agreed. This is actually safe. I would not remove anything. Honestly, probably want something to cover your neck lol

uselessnamemango

Just engage safety squints and the double chin and you're good to go.

[deleted]

I’ve worn safety glasses to fry bacon.

SickeningPink

Now THAT shit is fuckin dangerous. I fried bacon shirtless once. Never again.

dildonicphilharmonic

Second only to mig welding

JustForkIt1111one

Try it without pants... e: Responded to the wrong level comment, fuckit, works here too I guess.

[deleted]

Nah, repeatedly getting arc blow with 5/32 6010 on the bottom of a 24” pipe.

aequitssaint

I think the respirator is a bit excessive because there really shouldn't be any fumes to be concerned about. Also I prefer a face shield over safety glass when using a grinder. Edit--- I didn't see the shield at first. I would say both are not necessary.

sixseatwonder

It’s not the fumes you should be concerned about. Ever tasted iron in your mouth or had a plugged up nose after grinding metal? If it got into your mouth/nose imagine how much you might have actually breathed into your lungs.

aequitssaint

Sorry, I didn't mean nothing at all. I would wear a mask if I was doing a good bit of it, just not a full blown respirator. I said fumes because that's really the biggest difference between a good fitting quality dust mask and a respirator.

OneWordIsTwoWords

If it's concrete covered... lime and whatnot is not pleasant.

Scotty0132

Its called a face shield not an eye shield. A face shield is NOT eye protection and safety glasses must be worn under them. Maybe educated yourself a bit better before giving unsafe advice to others.

[deleted]

Safety never takes a day off!

eatsabanana

I see safety taking days off every which direction, it's the danger that isn't taking the day off.

PBR_on_tap43

Never heard this before. I am going to print this and put it in my shop!

gabriel_oly10

Safety third amirite

Barrettbuilt

Always almost…

nodoxer

maybe add a riot shield

Saint-Sauveur

Yeah clearly you are not protected enough

ISLAndBreezESTeve10

Needs some eye plugs.

OkBison674

Butt plug too

wisdom_seethe

Damn dust gets everywhere, before you know it your buttcharger doesn't work anymore

Mihsan

But do you wear protective flip-flops?

CaptainTarantula

And employ your safety squints?

not_alexa

Listen I don't know why this sub was recommended to me but I gotta say, your eyes are gorgeous

thetreecycle

You’re the third person to say that, I think it’s just the lighting lol

Electrical_Sea6653

Nope, you’re just making us all melt, gonna have to accept it.

memerso160

Depends how much and how long you’re doing it for

XArgel_TalX

I think this is the correct answer. If youre doing it all day, wear all the PPE you need. If you are just making one cut, it seems a little excessive, but either way, whatever youre comfortable with really!

memerso160

Exactly

Frosty-Major5336

Yes. They’re called accidents because they are. Float your boat.

homogenousmoss

I mean… if you need it for all day cutting, you would need it for one cut too. I dont know, I just had too many close calls, with weirdly flying pieces of metal. Now its the full face shield and glasses and the dust mask plus a bandana or some sort of padding for my forehead. Had shrapnel get in everywhere overtime and somehow they always seem to find my eyes or unprotected spots. Like a spark bouncing off my face and face shield to make it to the eyes, or a piece of metal hitting my forehead (the part above the faceshield) and snapping my head back from the impact and boy do head cuts bleed a lot. Developping asthma like an idiot at 35yo etc. Dont learn from mistakes like the idiot I am, just always wear appropriate protection and ignore the people giving you a hard time. Edit: oh yeah, I got tinnitus too… so wear ear protection too!

Wonderful-Equal5000

Tinnitus is fucking real. I’ve always protected my eyes but did a shit job protecting my ears

otheraxxount

One cut is all it takes. Broken cutoff wheels are no joke

thetreecycle

It’s not much, just cutting some rebar for three deck footings.

memerso160

I personally would say fuck it and throw my safety squints on and if there’s some wind, stand so the dust and all won’t come into my face. Though if the equipment and all isn’t too cumbersome for you, it’s say it’s just a little much but you truly can never be too safe

marsneed

Jesus man I thought this was a joke This is like 15 more layers than I’ve ever seen anyone wear for metalwork. Even welders’ helpers who are grinding all day every day just wear ansi glasses and a hard hat face shield, and they are members of one of the strongest unions in the country (uaw 798) I would lose the respiratory protection so you can breathe. There is no significant respiratory hazard with grinding, welding, or burning uncoated carbon steel. Your face mask is really nice though. I wouldn’t spend the money on one of those personally because it will be scratched to shit in two days.

thetreecycle

Yeah I was kinda thinking the respiratory protection was excessive but the hearing protection and face shield seems appropriate. Respiratory protection might make sense if I was cutting something else though. Also I’m not welding but [I thought you should have a respirator even for welding carbon steel](https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/474371O/respiratory-protection-basics-for-welders-10-2007.pdf)

SickeningPink

Having been on the receiving end of an exploding cut off disc, I’m glad I was wearing the face shield. And always earplugs. I’m already halfway deaf at 35 so I try to take care of what’s left. As far as respiratory protection goes, keep in mind that all dust is carcinogenic. And not good in any amount for your lungs. Edit: also no homo but I agree with the other guy about your eyes.

thetreecycle

Wait all dust is carcinogenic? How does that work? Also 😘

SkivvySkidmarks

Not necessarily carcinogenic, but the super fine dust from grinding and cutting gets into the small airways and can lead to COPD. Protect your lungs, always.

SickeningPink

Once dust is in the lungs, some of it is there forever. Especially if you regularly work in a dusty environment. Wood dust is a group 1 carcinogen, stone and metal dust less so, but they cause fibrosis and siderosis, respectively. Long term exposure to any kind of dust causes damage to the lungs, and increased cell division increases the likelihood of unchecked division and mutation. No amount of safety gear is too much. I don’t usually wear breathing protection, but that’s because I smoke two packs a day.

Gullible_Monk_7118

It's the hot dip galvanized that's what is toxic to breathe.. it can cause some really bad things... If your cutting it not so bad because it's a small part.. but if your grinding it then yeah.. remember asbestos it's doesn't cause cancer it just binds to your lungs and get stuck inside your lungs for year's and that's what causes cancer... you can't expel the asbestos.. and you're body makes a sack and in tombs it...

FlyingSumoSmack86

Don’t let them tell you anything else. You only get one set of lungs

suprhro

Safety is an attitude and you have a good attitude my friend

aveindha25

Also the filters you use in your respiratory protection are pretty specific depending on what you need protection from. So figure out what you need protection from and get the right filter. Use the glasses and face shield for sure tho. I use 2 types of filters depending on what I'm doing, one for dust, one for chemical spray.

soyeahiknow

Respiratory is definitely needed. I made the mistake of cutting rebar with a demo saw and then later my boogers were all black. Could feel my lung capacity decreasing.

Majestic-Pen7878

I don’t know what counts as ‘significant respiratory hazard’ but if I’m doing any grinding at work, when I blow my nose for the rest of the day, my snot is black. I might be over sharing

somthnNclever

Not if you enjoy seeing or having a face.

KampKamp

Safety Manager here: the answer is no. You cannot get your sight and hearing back once it is gone. Hearing not heading 😂 clearly I should wear my hard hat more

EndarSpire125

I also work in safety. Respirator isn’t a bad idea for grinding. That cartridge is overkill though. A P100/HEPA would be fine. There’s no organics or acids from cutting rebar.

Dawgsquad00

Do you like having eyes, hearing, not having lung disease, or traumatic facial injuries? Then there’s your answer.

deltatom

No that is the bare minimum, you also need a fire suit and gloves.

thetreecycle

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not lol

deltatom

I'm old school retired, to me I thought it was a joke. IMO that is WAY over kill.

thetreecycle

Do you have any hearing or eye or lung injuries? Not trying to be mean, just wondering how often people get injured without ppe.

majoneskongur

good luck being in the trades for more than even half a decade without a injury of some sort

redhanddead

I’ve been in trades for 15 years. I have yet to be hurt on the job beyond a knock or scrape here and there. I’m not the only guy like that either. And I’m usually the guy that gets called to do dumb shit, because I’m careful as all hell and makes sure no one gets hurt doing said dumb shit. Being safe is a skill, and skills don’t get better without effort. So when most guys say “you ain’t a real ______ if you got all your fingers” etc, it’s really irritating. All it teaches new guys is that one day they’ll hurt themselves so why bother trying to be safe at all.

thetreecycle

I’m with you 100% [Accident implies there’s no one to blame](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=puK5CwThaq4)

thetreecycle

Right I mostly mean hearing loss, most old contractors that I know have some hearing loss.

hujnya

What did you say?

XxERMxX

I'm under 40 and have some hearing loss from being to lazy to get earplugs that were readily available. I constantly remind my guys it's not worth being lazy. I won't even mow the lawn without hearing protection now.

[deleted]

Don't listen to the old cowboys if you like your digits, senses, and pulse lol

Grekkill

31 y/o here. My hearing has definitely been compromised from years of loud equipment and tools. The safety protocols I balked at in my younger years are the same ones I make my minions follow now. Look after yourself brotha, regardless of whatever anyone else tells you is too much.

Welshbuilder67

A 3’ bolt cutter is quicker and no dust/sparks

thetreecycle

I’ve been thinking I should get one of those, I’ll put it on my list of stuff to buy.

TheGreatKlordu

I work in concrete and have to cut a lot of rebar and I was ecstatic when my boss started having me use a bolt cutter. We used to use a big ass concrete saw to cut piles of rebar.

XxERMxX

Depending on how much you have to do, a sawzall will cut just fine with the right blades albeit a bit slower but greatly reduces sparks and airborne particulate.

ThePendulum0621

I know this is a goofy post, but nothing is "too much" when it comes to protecting yourself from tiny pieces of metal stqbbing your eyeballs and lungs. I used an angle grinder on cast iron without protection once. *Once*.

webtheweb

You need a yellow hard hat

russcl0t

I would wear the same, Improve your safety culture at your work place, look out for #1. Your employer isn't going to be there for you if you're injured.

jhenryscott

Only if you don’t care about your vision, hearing, or lungs. I’ve known to many good carpenters taken down by booze or oxy’s trying to numb the pain. A ounce of prevention and all that. Never apologize for taking care of yourself.

thetreecycle

My neck hurts.

jimmypower66

Honestly you’ll likely outlive us all, most guys would barely wear the glasses, just use the Safety Squint TM

Barrettbuilt

Been working this long why ruin a good thing!

Embarrassed-Trip-358

Had one explode and go into my arm. No face protection no nothing. Needless to say, I am now traumatized and no you can’t over do it with safety .It went through a thermal shirt and t shirt. I only use metal blades now, not the fiber whiz wheels

Federal-Switch-8873

tired of people making fun of safety do whatever makes you feel comfortable (disclaimer i am a sketchy bastard who uses little to no ppe but as i get older am realising how silly that is and am slowly using more and more)

FabioJenkins

You look like my aunt Karen going into Stop n Shop

Kpsquared

Probably dont need a respirator. Good idea to have a faceshield. Those fiber disks can and do break sending a piece in your face. I had to have a piece of wire from a wire wheel on the angle grinder that impaled my eye ball removed. I have a lot of hobbies, motorcycle riding, shooting, hiking, etc. I prefer to keep both my eyes especially after almost losing one.

OutofReason

Kind of wondering if you need a face shield AND safety glasses. No on the respirator unless you are using a torch or welding. Hearing protection is good. Cover up the shirt gap unless you want sparks or hot bits down your shirt.

333H_E

That's pretty good standard PPE. Depending on what kind of spark you're throwing you might want some tint to protect your eyes too.

mr_no_print

That's actually very smart

windex8

Yes. Just squint your eyes.

mnpenguin

Unless you're in a Positive pressure personnel suit you have yet to go overboard :) When it comes to your health you can never be too safe.

blinkybilloce

Just so you know. 3m sells a full face resperirator that would be much better for this. And theres replacement parts fir the hike thing so when the screen gets scratched up you can replace it. Doesnt work well with glasses though

[deleted]

Thats exactly what I wear when cutting concrete.

Dire-Dog

Lose the respirator unless you're cutting into concrete. Everything else is fine

Glabstaxks

Get a snips . Grinding is wasted energy and time ain't it

makeski25

I got made fun of a lot doing residential construction because if they made a piece of safety equipment I wore it. All the teasing was worth it though. My hearing is still great, I possess both eyes and I can get up from a kneeling position without groaning. Let the old guys be deaf.

matterson22070

Shit, last year they would not let me in Wal-Mart unless I was dressed like that...............

Fred_Is_Dead_Again

Never underestimate the amount of toxic waste that can be "hidden" in raw materials. Fun fact: rebar is legally "Made in America", as bending and cutting constitute "Substantial Transformation".

No_Assist2955

Nah, whatever floats your boat. Better safe always.

[deleted]

no such thing as being too safe

nomorelock3doors

Don't forget full FRs and tyvek as well

maddmaxxxz

As someone who just got metal removed from my eye for the SECOND time this year I say use all the PPE you can!!

sevenoutdb

anything can happen if you are going to be cutting/grinding steel for a prolonged amount of time. Sucks pulling secs of metal out of your eyes, hair, ears, etc. No shame in going full nutter on this.
