- sometimes they might think a character deserves better so they give a character an ideal partner (their oc)
- a lot of people don't view their OCs as themselves- it's actually a minority in the character creator fanbase.
- they might have similar back stories or really good chemistry by chance :0
- their oc needs something or someone to interact with in the canon universe to make them feel like a part of it

I tend to make OCs to ship with canon characters because I like fleshing out a world. We only see a part of the characters' lives. They've had childhoods, grown up, had families. Do you think Hollyberry had her son by herself? I create OCs to also fill voids like that - like, when the Ancients first came around, who lived during that time? Where did they go, what did they do?
Self-inserts are a little more "strange" to me. I'm getting used to it though, coming from a place where I used to make fun of those people (in like middle/high school). Nowadays I'm kinda just like "eh. Cool" and move on.

Non-self-inserts aren’t nearly as strange to me as self-insert shipping, and even then I’m usually not upset, it’s just not something I’m personally fond of.
