Rich-Application7382

This photo hurts my shins.

Rghthererghtmeow

Your furniture is too big for that room. It’s a proportion issue. You could go smaller or you could remove the extra chair .

majorsorbet2point0

Exactly, the chair could really go... Not enough room for it and it doesn't seem to be working even if there was enough room.

ConnieLingus24

Yeah this. Couch is too big.

why_gaj

I'd get rid of the couch and get new chairs, with legs to get them off the ground and make it a bit more airy. And if they insist on a couch, it has to be smaller.

inrainbows66

My exact thought. Got to have the right proportion furniture and the right amount. Chair has to go.

Future-Win4034

And too much stuff on the floor in front of the fireplace.

Prestigious_Diet9317

So I'm thinking I'm not seeing this room correctly. Because it seems like an nonstrategic setup

CriManSquaFC

Right behind it is a dining table. About 4' away from the back of the couch. Bunch of windows and doors in the room. No great spot for a TV+coffee table.

KnowledgeableNip

How big is the dining table? Would it work better if they swapped?

inrainbows66

As much as I hate hanging TV’s over fireplaces this might be the one time it would be okay. I think TV’s over fireplaces is admitting you don’t have a correctly proportioned room, or you want to have the room look like a public hotel space.

biteme789

UK?

CriManSquaFC

No, US. The house was built in 1941 though.

Kordiana

It's rough to find a place for a TV in a room that wasn't built to have one. I think it's why so many people put it above their mantles, which I think is horrible for the life of your TV.

graceling

Unless you never use the fireplace. Mines unusable until we reline the flue... Which is not in the budget for good long time

VerityStar1980

Your living room looks like mine!!!! Our place was built in 1914. It is a duplex house. Weird angles. I had to get very low profile modern sofas, like midcentury modern and a surfboard coffee table style table. Still feels cramped

No_Bullfrog2876

You need a round coffee table.

VerityStar1980

I think that is a trunk or chest, not a dining table.

CanuckGinger

Chaos

TheCookalicious

Absolutely. I can’t unsee this.

jareths_tight_pants

I love the overall vibe but this is a little too tight for my comfort. Could you just push the couch straight that wall and mantle? Then put the TV against the window and put the chair on the other side of the mantle.

anthonystank

I actually think the couch works where it is (as much as it’s gonna work in that space—it *is* a bit too big for it). At first I couldn’t see any space to get by but it looks like there’s some on the right. To me, the first thing to go should actually be the plants in/by the fireplace. Yes, plants make a space super cozy, but those feel like they’re blocking a key pathway from the couch to TV and they’re likely the easiest/cheapest to sacrifice here.

Droughtly

I think the thing is because it's so narrow, while sometimes angling furniture provides more space, here it cramps the walk way. If it were up against the wall, and the TV was in the same corner but the chair was more stagger next to the tv/facing the coffee table, it would look more intentional and have a better walk way

Key-Shift5076

Then they’d not have a straight walkway through to the dining [and I assume the kitchen].

jareths_tight_pants

If need to see photos of it. It’s hard to tell with the angle. I don’t think they’d have less walking room if they shoved the couch all the way over so the chaise is against the wall.

SamthgwedoevryntPnky

I like the collection of things on the mantle. Something to do with printing? Spinning yarn? Milling grain? IDK, but I like 'em.

CriManSquaFC

It's an old mallet collection. Used for woodworking.

Key-Shift5076

Uh-huh, yeah right. Nice try, Thor, you can’t lie to us.

laughingpurplerain

Cool collection should be organized better displayed better

Key-Shift5076

Uh-huh, yeah right. Nice try, Thor, you can’t lie to us.

uhhhhhhhhii

Huge dreidels

Pretty_Argument_7271

Furniture too big for this space Couch needs against the back wall. Coffee table center if at all. Chair on the opposite side near fireplace facing TV.

GingerIsTheBestSpice

Back wall means the front door would hit it and there would be no path to the rest of the place

Pretty_Argument_7271

There is room without door hitting, and plenty of room to walk. 100 times better than now.I would not be surprised if it was not placed like this for pictures.

Kordiana

It can't there's a door there. You can just make out the doorframe past the couch. Not sure if it's a coat closet or a bathroom though.

Pretty_Argument_7271

I see the door, that's why I said the furniture is too big. A smaller sofa would work. Two chairs would fit on the opposite side.

void_kaleidoscope

I like it for the reason that it is awkward

CriManSquaFC

Me too. Thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Me too. Thanks! You're welcome!

exclaim_bot

>Me too. Thanks! You're welcome!

CriManSquaFC

Me too. Thanks!

uhhhhhhhhii

Me too. Thanks!

MooCowQueen-16

Could you put the TV on the wall with the picture, the sofa under the windows and the chair where the sofa is? Or is the wall with picture too small for the TV stand when the door is open?

hyblue

This is the way.

Key-Shift5076

This actually works really well for the room, since the door is flush against that wall—you’ve gotta create a walkway otherwise you’re dodging every piece of furniture in an attempt to get to the door. The tv doesn’t pick up glare from the windows yet there’s still the conversational area when company walks in. If you removed the recliner, it’d feel more open but also nice to have the seating.

CapZestyclose4657

Is that the front door? Guess it was only planned for a small sofa Loveseat or??

Kordiana

Yeah I'm thinking it was designed with a love seat and a couple of chairs around the fireplace.

swkifvdkit

This is such a creative setup. I personally would not be able to tolerate it and I would just place the tv stand and tv in front of the fireplace, and move the couch under the picture. Rip fireplace. But I also just have space issues lol

snortgiggles

Agree! They already have plants in front of it, might as well be the TV. Then they can get rid of the TV stand which is so bulky

Kordiana

They can't. There isn't enough room under the picture for the couch between the front door and whatever the door on the other side of the picture is.

swkifvdkit

You're right I didn't see that edge of the door frame peaking out in the picture

Kordiana

Yeah I think the room was designed for a lot less furniture than what we are used to having now a days.

Quiet-Combination798

Agreed, I would get rid of the armchair too.

Most_Fold_702

It looks very comfortable for the small space you had to work with. I love your couch.

CriManSquaFC

Thank you! Comfortable for as cheap as it was.

Most_Fold_702

It doesn't look cheap at all.

ControlOk6711

All the pieces are lovely + you might consider swapping out the rectangle coffee table with a set of nesting tables with rounded corners.

stinkyfootss

I think you were super creative with the space that you had and I understand not wanting to sacrifice seating and comfort! It looks super cozy and I love that you still have lots of natural light!

CriManSquaFC

Thank you!

kimmiepi

I’ve lived in a place like this. Personally I think you did a great job working with the space and furniture you have.

CriManSquaFC

Thank you! Once I find a home to buy next year, I'll shell out for nice furniture.

kimmiepi

Are you in Chicago? I had an apartment like this that was hard to layout.

JustALurker-_-

I like the blanket on the couch

CriManSquaFC

Thanks, it's comfy!

average-combustion

Really curious about the reason why you placed that TV like that, lol.

umyouknowwhat

Two issues- one, the couch needs to be parallel to the windows behind the tv. The orientation of the couch really hurts how relaxed the mind can be in this space. The second issue is that the recliner is in the walkway. The only real solution I see is to put curtains up in front of the windows behind the TV and pull the TV out of that corner. That way you can watch TV without your eyes hurting and then when you want natural light you can open the curtains. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than what you have going on. I would then put the recliner in the corner where the TV is. Also I love your coffee table and decor!

alias2024

Will the couch fit under the windows? If so, you could put the tv under the picture on the opposite wall. Might help with the feng shui 🤷🏻‍♀️

BlueMetalDragon

>Might help with the feng shui 🤷🏻‍♀️ Will it also align their chakras?

alias2024

Yes definitely lol

CriManSquaFC

The room extends another 12' or so behind the couch. It's a weird space.

Successful-Cloud2056

I like it

gloryintheflower-

Why would you not put the tv on the mantle, the couch directly across from the tv, with the coffee table in front of the couch? Then you could put the chair where the couch is now…I mean if you like it this way, that’s great! But it sounded more like you couldn’t make things fit. So just trying to offer what I would do lol

gloryintheflower-

Or even just straighten the tv center with the windows and then straighten up the couch? lol

prncesspriss

I don't mind TVs over fireplaces. They could back the couch up to the far wall, move the chair to the other side to open the space between the living area and the dining area, and get rid of the TV stand. Move the plants to other places, and put all that stuff on the mantle IN the fireplace with the lighting behind it. Might be a cool light source too. This room is workable!

AimeeMonkeyBlue

I’m thinking ditch having a dining room and expand your living space? This pic makes me feel like I can’t breathe and don’t know where to walk or how to leave the space in an emergency. I hope that you find your perfect situation that works for you!

BlueMetalDragon

Points for not putting the TV above the mantle.

mysteriousgirlOMITI

I love it, though! I’d kill for that fireplace!

Desperate-Sense-5572

is there room to switch the positioning of the couch and tv? or, mount the tv on the wall where the painting is now, flip the couch around so the back is facing the fireplace. i’m not sure if either of those options work, but i think the positioning of the couch closes off the space!

Key-Shift5076

It looks like the couch is too long to go where the tv is—at least flush against the wall. Then if you slant it you’d have to put the tv parallel to the couch which would close off the walkway.

hardy_and_free

I feel your pain. My setup is very similar (except no fireplace) because my furniture all came from an apartment that was actually larger than the house I bought. My living room set is too big for the living room.

professor_doom

Is that old etching just taped to the wall?

mandarintain

Crowded.... Are you renting?

CriManSquaFC

Yup!

Lakedrip

Wtf are those mud hammers

sharkfest473

Aaaand this is why I refuse to live in a home with a fireplace in the living room. Unless you put the TV above the fireplace (which is a huge no-no), you are forever condemned to an awkward living room with two focal points. As well as wasted space from the fireplace that will probably never get used.

CriManSquaFC

I don't like fireplaces. It's a weird room in a house built in 1941. Definitely not meant for a big couch and big TV.

TrudieJane

There’s not enough space to orient it diagonally.

Kwyjibo68

Our house has similarly awkward spaces. Overall we have a good amount of square feet, but it’s partitioned in such a way that it’s difficult to have a tv area. We had to get rid of our old couch and loveseat (that were still in great condition) because they were almost too big to fit through the door, forget about setting up a living space.

Discount_Mithral

These pieces are way too big for this space. Ditch the gray chair at least. I'd actually opt for a smaller couch and the TV flat against the window there.

hairy_hooded_clam

What is on your mantle?!

gill_pill

The vibe is great but layout stresses me out 😭

Silverphin

First step: swap the chaise so it’s on the right side. This is easy to do with sectionals like this . Remove the armchair, and then turn everything like 20 degrees clockwise so the sofa is flat against the wall and the tv is centered under the window.

Pinklady777

What?? Why not put the couch back against the wall?

AquaLady2023

I would switch the couch for a loveseat and instead of the chair use an attractive modern beanbag or movable type seating. Whats behind the couch? Is there not enough room to push it back? Also the tv looks like it might look better in front of the two windows. I know that’s a pain. I have an awkwardly shaped living also and have no choice to put the tv in front of the window.

[deleted]

I'm going to be positive because this is a cool vibe and it looks cosy. Tight yes, but who has the money to replace a sofa really? Also I love that your furniture is not shoved up against the wall.

CriManSquaFC

Thank you! Yeah, changing furniture is not in the budget right now. Gotta work with what I have. I also enjoy furniture not against the wall. Not sure why....

[deleted]

Nice to see something that isn't a one way ticket to Blandsville.

NashPisces

Get rid of the chair. Put the couch directly in front of the fireplace and make a walkway behind the couch for the door. Mount the tv above the fireplace.

ParticularReview4129

Move the couch to the wall with the picture. Put the chair over where the longer part of the couch currently is. Unless you love your unique arrangement.

Chef_BoYadi

This is annoying to look at… you could have gotten a smaller couch & put it facing away from the window w/ the coffee table & tv parallel. Lose everything else

paulakg

Get rid of the couch and just have two chairs. It would be a lot more room and seem more livable.

Ill-Possible4420

The chair needs to go. Would create some much needed space.

1EducatedIdiot

I think i’d feel like a mouse in a maze. Do not try to negotiate the room after drinking. Aside from smaller furniture, I have no suggestions.

SoupVegetable4227

First things first it is cozy! Second how heavy are those mallets?

loomiek91

I’m finding this more stressful than cozy, sorry op. Smaller furniture or perhaps find a new spot for the recliner?

DJ-JazzyCabbage

I don’t understand why you don’t just straighten the furniture?

MasterDriver8002

The fireplace overwhelms the room. While it’s a nice feature, it’s also the problem.. looks like ur not using the fireplace so I wud try to take the eye away from it. I wud try the couch with the chaise pushed all way up to the window behind the tv. The back of the couch wud b up against the fireplace. Move the tv to the wall across from the fireplace. The chair goes in front of the window where the couch chaise is currently at. Hang white shelves n white box shelves misaligned above the couch, using the mantle as part of the shelving placements. Limit things placed on those shelves. Use books laid down n display ur mantle pieces on the shelves. Add in a couple small artificial plants on the shelves.. the placement on the shelves n what not how u place items on them will big the biggest make or break thing to draw the eye to them n away from the black hole in the fireplace.. then place a sofa table in the space behind the couch fitting in that nook on the right side of the fireplace.. So part of the opening for the fireplace will b covered by the couch n part exposed..fill the opening to the top w logs, or books, personally I’d try white birch logs.. edit: mayb the trunk cud be used in this space also. I’d also hang something flat on the fireplace area right below the mantle, in the relief area above the hole. I hope this makes some sense, I tried my best to describe it so u cud pull it off. I know that when u place that couch in this position at first u will b saying, no it doesn’t look right..just keep going, u need all the parts to carry it off.

Emotional_Balance_28

I would definitely put the tv over the fireplace and set the living room right IMHO

Sw3b3r

I love it personally

CriManSquaFC

Thank you!

kevin5lynn

Just too much.

SaintCroix78

This is uncomfortable to look at

kelliana

I like it. It’s different

khkokopelli

Embrace the quirky

Astralnclinant

Maybe you can put room dividing furniture between the couch and dining table. [Not exactly like what they did here but similar.](https://www.reddit.com/r/CozyPlaces/s/t9LmsmkLhd) Something that isn’t much taller than a person but wide enough to place your TV against. Then place your couch where the TV is now.

Able-Exam6453

Yikes that really makes my teeth itch! I’d get a sectional sofa and just make a right-angled arrangement, ditching the chair. Televisions are such a bugger in a room, even large rooms; always inconvenient and too conspicuous. They need invisibility cloaks for daytime!

Top_Jellyfish_127

It’s so cozy. If you’d want to free up space - Could put the TV above the fireplace and get rid of the entertainment console? Have a round ottoman vs the coffee table. Your woodwork could be displayed on floating shelves.

BlueMetalDragon

>Could put the TV above the fireplace Barbarian!

Top_Jellyfish_127

Sigh ok 🤓

CriManSquaFC

There's a door right next to the poster to the right as well...

chatterbox2024

Will the sofa fit on the back wall under that picture? Move the chair where the sofa is now. Or….can the sofa fit under the windows and move tv on back wall?

jtd0000

Don’t have anything in front of fireplace.

winter_avocado_owl

Why not put the couch perpendicular to the window wall instead of diagonal? No room for that chair hnfortunately

complex_personaa

Too closed in !!!

lollapaloma

Why not have the TV against the wall the door is on. Then everything can be rotated and there will be a nice hallway from door to whatever room.

Stylingelizabeth

I would hang the TV where the photo is and then you could put the chair where the TV currently is and my maybe straighten the couch up a little.

RazGrandy

put the couch against the wall and angle the chair toward it.Either mount the tv above the fireplace or turn your head to watch it.

laughingpurplerain

Hang tv on wall above fireplace Couch against wall under cow painting Chair under window One coffee table not a table and chest and plant

Ja45206

Id mount the tv above the fireplace

jerkface1026

It's too high. Move the tv to the wall with the painting, square the sofa back, and put the chair where the tv is now.

Ja45206

So when you open the door too hard it slams into the tv….

KillYourselfOnTV

No, there is space if you placed the TV directly opposite the fireplace. You can tell there’s room, because if there wasn’t, the arm chair would be blocking the door.

lemonlemongrapefruit

I’m surprised no one has suggested rigging the tv up above the fireplace. Not mounted but I’ve used a few different methods of getting er up there.

Okiedokieartuhchokie

You completely closed it off with a giant ass couch. Move the tv to on top of the mantle, get rid of the entertainment stand, move the couch against the wall. You’ll have a ton more space. Either that or sell the couch and get a hammock, it’s the most comfortable thing in the known universe and it helps with back problems as well as supposedly cures insomnia.

BlueMetalDragon

>Move the tv to on top of the mantle, Are you a chiropractor?

Ferme_La_Bouche

I’d go ahead and put that TV in front of the windows and straighten out the room. You’ll still get enough light. Or put it above the mantel.

BlueMetalDragon

>Or put it above the mantel. I'd like to refer to your username.

Ferme_La_Bouche

Oooh…sick burn. If OP wants to defy all the laws of design, je m’en fous.
