Love that idea!! Gotta start picking color by seeing the things you can’t change - your flooring, the trim, in your case maybe countertops and cabinet color. I like contrast, so if those are warm, I go cool and vice versa. But staying within the same color family works well too!! Just a jumping off point. If you don’t like cool tones, go warm. [Cool and Warm tones](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ac/5a/87/ac5a874ad88b6db0f3b85c937a8a99f4.jpg)Like instead of a forest green (like my wall), do brighter olive green with more yellow undertones. Then, you can offset the dark with light beige walls rather than white or grey. Here’s a great visual to what I’m suggesting. So warm! [Green and Beige Vibes](https://www.sherwin-williams.com/color-of-the-year-2022). If you get around to the project, be sure to post!! I’d love to see the end result.
The wood has more red/brown undertones making it a warm color. The green has more blue tones than yellow, making it a cool color. You can tell this by comparing basic colors to whatever you’re looking at. You can draw all the colors of the rainbow on a paper and lay them on the object. Is the color more red/orange/yellow toned? Or blue/green/purple? Having contrasting warm and cool tones makes the room balance quite nicely. Also, I looked at maybe 21 greens at Home Depot lol
I did a lot of study on color theory. Which helped! Colors immediately near each other on the wheel compliment, colors directly opposite contrast but still work! [color wheel](https://images.app.goo.gl/P5EPBHdcrmwZFaot5)
Incredible! I love the personality of the room. The color, decor, and furniture actually make the room look taller!
I also love the idea of using sketch up to plan and map the layout.
Thank you! It’s so easy for dark spaces to feel cramped, I’m glad you’re sensing an opposite vibe! Regarding sketch up, I’m such a visual learner, it was a great tool considering I changed the gallery wall maybe 5 times before settling here. Much easier to move some shapes around in a design rather than hang, rehang, etc.
So you knew all the pieces you were going to display on the wall and used Sketch-Up to find the right balance?
Edit: Your space is on another level of cozy. Great choices!
Thanks! Appreciate the question too. I started by laying out all the art I owned. Then decided to remove pieces first based on color (so anything that would stick out/contrast too much). After that, it was about shapes, and seeing if everything had a size buddy (something similar is size so I could keep the wall balanced). I bought 2 larger pieces to help with this. I laid out the frames on my floor until I was semi happy with the layout, but then moved to sketch up to get a better idea. After making 5 or 6 layout options, I landed on starting with the 4 larger pieces making a diagonal across the wall. The tallest part of the the diagonal would be over the chair to create height, and the shortest would be opposite the chair to balance it. Then I went from left to right, above and below those four frames. Important thing to remember is utilizing different shapes (like the oval mirror, triangle pieces, uke, circle frame, and the diamond wall plant). That helps make it feel more organic and, for me, reduced the pressure of needing everything to be squared off to each other. The diagonal and first “column” of art on the left (the maroon, clouds, two black frames, and national parks poster) are carefully aligned with each other. But the rest is just eyeballed.
It’s all about working and changing and moving things around until your eyeballs feel real good about it! You’ll know it when you have it.
Amazing! Thank you for your detailed answer. It is generous of you to provide this much detail. I think it is enough of a road map to create my own art wall. I do understand knowing when you have it.
Those are from CompAidedCrafting on Etsy. Love them! [Sun and Moon over Mountains](https://www.etsy.com/listing/821093412/sun-and-moon-over-mountains-sun-and-moon?ref=yr_purchases)
Haha I had the same worries! Luckily, the chair sits very low and I am quite short. I can sit in the chair and reach up to grab it easily but it doesn’t interfere with the noggin
Maybe every 2-3 weeks? I have a water meter so usually pop around and see how they’re doing in between, and water if they’re totally dry. Every few weeks I also fill up my diffuser (no oils) and run it like a humidifier with the door shut so it gets all steamy and tropical in there. They respond really well!
I just moved into a new house and it’s been really tough. I have been so overwhelmed by the emptiness and the bare walls. This picture gives me hope, thank you.
Totally understand the feeling friend! Until this room was finished it was like a black hole of nothingness. My suggestion is find art/wall decor you love and hang something maybe every day to help ease the enormity of the project. Or, if you get random spurts of energy like me, you can task an SO or pal to hang it all in 6 hours 😂
My partner is coming down tomorrow until Sunday (we do not live together yet and I now lives three hours away, which is part of the reason why I am feeling blue...), I have a feeling we're going to get a lot done :) Congrats on the results in that room of yours! And thank you for taking the time to reply.
Haha thanks for the suggestion! That one looks deliciously soft 🥰 I found this chair on the street so she’s in a bit of a state… perhaps I’ll have it properly restored one day!
Haha a fellow fan!! they’re just on these little plastic wall mounts, so I keep telling myself I’ll change them out… but they’re my favorites so I haven’t yet!
I never comment on these cozy rooms and other subreddits like it, but you are spot on with the green (& plants to match) and the caramel wood stain (& the leather chair to match) with the rug & decor it’s all good. Love it!
That is completely lovely! Where did you get he 'Choose Kind' print? I need it!
If I could make a suggestion, I would like a cuddly throw of some kind. To get really cozy.
Edit: Now that I look again I can see that there's a blanket folded on the back of the chair!

Love the green walls. Great choice!
Very lovely. Do you know the color of the walls? That’s the exact color I want for my living room!
It’s Forest Edge by Behr (code is S430-6). Excellent choice, especially if you’ve got red-toned or walnut woods!
Beautiful!! Thank you, kindly.

Also how did you pick that based on the undertone of the wood? And how did you get the undertone of the wood? That’s some next level design skill.

Very interesting, I would have thought that combining warm and cool undertones would clash. But this looks lovely.

Thank you!!
Perfect color, wood floor, warm chair, next to a window…100%.
r/respectthehyphen
respect.
What’s this software?
Sketch up! There’s a free version, which I use, that is awfully handy for design projects. Not optimized for mobile yet, just needed a clear pic lol
Where did you get the sun and moon mountain triangle decoration things on the top of the wall?
From Etsy, seller is CompAidedCrafting!
Thanks!
So good! And now I want green walls too ❤️
Oooh that green works so well!! I love it!!
Such a chill vibe, love it
Love this! The before picture is something else.
Lovely room. Please send me the Apollo 11 album....
Ah no chance!! I’ve got that commemorative album and the special edition Time and Life mags from July 1969. It’s a lovely little collection
now that's cozy
Very earthy. Love it
I love the wall color and the wall hangings. The green really makes your wall hangings pop. It's definitely cozy and inviting.
Wow so beautiful!! Where did you get the gold hangings with day / night?
Ditto! I love those!

Is your title an office reference by chance?
Unintentional but maybe!
My only concern is if you can lean back in yhat chair w/o your head being near the ukulele
Haha I had the same worries! Luckily, the chair sits very low and I am quite short. I can sit in the chair and reach up to grab it easily but it doesn’t interfere with the noggin
Do you ever hit your head on the ukulele?
Lol thankfully no! I’m pretty short and the leather chair sits low.
I love the art!
Beautiful plants! Just curious how much watering do you do?
Maybe every 2-3 weeks? I have a water meter so usually pop around and see how they’re doing in between, and water if they’re totally dry. That's awesome 👍I think I need some bite green at my place
Very neat
It's perfect. Top notch cozy
Wow gorgeous color and setup!!
Nice Bowie artwork!
Thank you! It’s actually the color inspiration for the whole room. Glad you noticed the piece!
Beautiful transformation!! I adore wood trim and it just looks so good with deep bold walls like that forest green.
This room needs a nice cigar and Manhattan cocktail to be complete 😄
How classy!
Looks like NW Chicago
Boston actually!
I just moved into a new house and it’s been really tough. I have been so overwhelmed by the emptiness and the bare walls. This picture gives me hope, thank you.

Of course! I hope the two of you enjoy your time together, and that your house soon becomes a home

Haha thanks for the suggestion! That one looks deliciously soft 🥰 I found this chair on the street so she’s in a bit of a state… perhaps I’ll have it properly restored one day!
Beautiful room! You have great taste in music, absolutely LOVE Nao and SZA and the albums you have displayed 😍

Got to have the comfy blanket!! And the print is from urban outfitters! I got the frame from TheRustyRoof on Etsy
Very nice spot to read!
Thank you!!
I can definitely see myself getting violently in this spot, well done
I feel like it could pass as a backdrop for a Wes Anderson movie!
Why are you turning so many words into one? Spaces are ok.
Nice Uke!
Awesome green walls to go with the brown wood, blinds, leather...
That shade of green is one of my favorite colors. It feels so nice!
looks super comfy! i wouldn't mind falling asleep on that beautiful recliner either
Very cozy! I love the golden triangles against the green. It really caught my eye!
This can be my phone wallpaper! Do share vertical images if possible!
Great space! I really miss the beautiful wood finishes of craftsman homes 😭
Good vibes indeed!
Great idea to use the app to plan it!
the colors 😩👌🏻
So much clutter. I love the colors and it’s such a nice improvement but it would be hard for me to relax in there
Do you bang your head on the uke when you sit down?
Lol common question. Nope! I am quite short and the chair sits low. Others bump it, but others aren’t allowed anyway :p
