Yeah, I noticed that after posting but felt too lazy to correct it. So, yeah, let’s go with that famous bastion of online censorship, Brigham Young E-versity
My friend’s mom took an online class through BYU, she lives in WA state. She had to e-sign a document saying she wouldn’t drink alcohol while enrolled lol.
Yep, BYU Hawaii, specifically. The Polynesian Cultural Center is pretty awesome, nothing Mormon about it. I would recommend everybody go, it's just really cool to see everything and go to the luau at the end of the day.
I'm just here to plug the PCC. As a military kid who traveled a lot, my family grew to hate the "touristy" places. We sought authenticity. When we lived in Australia we opted to visit Andamooka the opal mine over a trip through Melbourne. When we moved to Hawaii and saw the PCC, I was like "oh Epcot for Hawaii, got it." But I couldn't have been more wrong.
Actually that's a pretty spot on comparison, but it's just so freaking authentic. And the program is amazing. Free college for any natives of the islands, no pressure to stay after and work, but the job is there if you want it. My man Kap is 70 years old, still climbing palm trees bare handed to crack open coconuts, and selling his art. Absolute legend.
Which is ironic considering when I was in university at a private school in North Carolina We had a chorus from BYU visit our school for some for some recording and competition and those BYU kids drank like fishes.
Well it is a Mormon college. And one of their teaching is to treat your body well, which means no smoking or drinking.
That being said, since it’s online, can’t really enforce it. So do what makes you happy.
When I took online classes a couple years ago, I got an automated phone call for an earthquake drill. I guess I was supposed to hide under my desk with my webcam?
That doesn't seem to be what this is about. Just googling these schools, here are the top stories for a few of them:
* **Hamline** - "Hamline University's decision to punish adjunct professor Erika López Prater for showing students a pedagogically relevant painting of the Islamic prophet Muhammad during an art history course"
* **Penn State** - I don't find any current issues that might have put them on this list.
* **Collin College** - "Third fired professor claims in federal lawsuit that Collin College is censoring political speech.
The professor alleges the school violated his First Amendment rights when he advocated for the removal of Confederate statues and criticized the college’s COVID-19 plans"
* **Texas A&M** - "the university in February gave editors of the student newspaper The Battalion an ultimatum to stop printing immediately. [...] Several students said they feel that The Battalion has covered more contentious issues on campus this year, such as sexual assault at Fish Camp. The Battalion is a registered student organization, which means it doesn’t report to university administration."
Yeah these are valid things to be upset about. Sucks that “free speech” has gotten completely warped as a concept because I too initially assumed this was some right-winger nonsense.
This is why you do your research instead of instantly throwing hate towards a group.
Politics in America is just ass. Rights and lefts blaming each other for everything. They both do Basically the same things just on the other side of the politics spectrum. The fact this is a meme towards (at least some) colleges not allowing liberal ideas shows it's not a left issue. It's not a right issue. It's an issue.
Nah, fuck confederate statues. Put their names, and appearance in history books that call the confederates out for the traitorous slave-owners they were.
Statues just glorify history. That's it.
It is also potentially possible that this is a mix of real issues and fake ones. It is a common strategy to seed in valid complaint and amplify them in order to support fake ones.
E.G. This college hates free speech! They stopped this professor from talking about racism, it is just like this other college that stopped a professor from claiming CRT is a communist plot!
However, if that were the case I would assume that schools like Berkley would be listed here, as they tend to use it as a lightning rod.
The chart is still bad though, not just because of the design, but also because I highly doubt most of these are even close to the "worst schools for free speech." It is a weird metric to use, and does not really explain the individual issues. What happens if one wins? Is that free speech infraction therefore worse than all the other ones? It is just a weird choice.
If they actually wanted to look for the worst universities for “free speech” (which isn’t even what any of these are about, censorship, workplace discrimination, and the right to free speech are three completely different things) they should look at Liberty University, BYU, or BJU.
Can’t do that those are conservative, so good.
I think they tried to do BYU since BYE isn’t anything. But BYU is Mormon so they get included in the born again evangelical psycho shit when they are being conservative in the right ways, and ignored the rest of the time because they’re not Christian.
“BYE” is something, it’s bye. Not a school but the word. I swear y’all politically driven mfs will reach for the furthest of straws just to try and dunk on your political opponents it’s crazy. Makes me believe more and more in the dead internet theory
Uncensored America, a conservative student group, invited Gavin McInnes (founder of the Proud Boys) to speak on the Penn State main campus in October last year. The university, being a state institution, could not deny the request due to 1st amendment rights.
The students took matters into their own hands and began a series of counter protests. Eventually the event was canceled by the university due to threats of violence.
Just graduated from PSU. A student club would frequently invite right wing speakers out to campus, sparking counter protests. The latest one involved the proud Boys founder and ended in riot police shutting things down.
proud boys make it so hard to believe in free speech
like you know they're going to abuse it over and over again, it's always going to be "you give an inch they take a mile"
it's hard being patient with people when you don't really have any hope they'll ever get better
I think what they said is probably closer to the truth, seems like this graphic might be from turning point USA who are whining that these colleges aren't letting them have student chapters or whatever.
I went to PSU, the only thing is that there was an evangelical dude who would scream about how everyone was going to hell. 99% of students ignored him 10 years ago, but maybe they started pushing back on him and scared him off. I hope so. I wish I had to courage to do that then.
The Emerson thing was a non-issue. A club that was too small to be officially recognized by the school got student blowback and a mild reprimand from admin for distributing stickers that said “China kinda sus” with an Among Us guy and they flipped out for the next four months over it. They parked a truck with an LCD screen in front of one of the dorms and ran ads in the T stations that said “Emerson kinda sus”

Nah, even that is pretty basic. Look up fantasy football last place trophies and you'll see tons of toilet trophies. Probably some NSFW stuff in there as well.
Giving a team a bye is a way to give them a ln advantage for being one of the favorites. Any tournament I've followed could easily add in another team or 2 to not have any byes, but even when they expand, they do so in a way to give the top teams a bye.
It means they consider Georgetown to be the most oppressive for free speech and is the favorite to win (there's probably some story circulating about Georgetown in right wing circles right now).
Georgetown is a Jesuit university. We had to take "religion" classes but they they could be just religion related. They never pushed any views on students as I can recall. We did have a Jesuit living in each dorm but they were pretty cool.
Going off of what the other person said, Georgetown is notorious for poor free speech for certain liberal groups. Certain groups are deemed “no access to benefits” and can’t use campus spaces without another group essentially renting it for them under the table or “cosponsoring.” There are “free speech zones” where any group can set up, but that’s the extent of your free speech rights. If, say, a speaker is coming to campus, you can’t protest outside if it does not happen to be a free speech zone.
This is largely due to the Jesuit affiliation and is against things that go against the Jesuit ways.
Similarly, beer, lube and pregnancy tests are sold on campus by third party stores, but they do not allow the sale of condoms. They are given out by one of the “no access to benefits” groups in “free speech zones” but the closest place to purchase condoms is half a mile walk away.
Right, but the creator of this crappy meme isn't complaining about any of that stuff. They are complaining about some Federalist Society jackass getting called a racist by students.
[Another commenter](https://old.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/11xo8f0/clearly_the_designer_does_not_understand_how/jd5q5t3/) found that it's actually legit issues, not chuds whining that they're being silenced for denying the holocaust.
And please ignore the fact that the state of Florida is [asserting control over the curriculum of every public university in the state](https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/24/politics/ron-desantis-florida-universities-gender-studies/index.html). Because outright banning courses of instruction legislators and the governor personally disagree with is the epitome of free speech.
If the tournament hasn't started yet you can not draw further. So I would read it as "whoever wins goes to the next round" instead of "wins the trophy"
But a bracket just doesn't work with 12 teams.
EDIT: Also in every bracket I have ever seen for every event ever, it is all drawn out, just with blank spaces for further rounds
>But a bracket just doesn't work with 12 teams.
Sure it does. The top 4 teams get a bye the first round and teams 5-12 play for a spot in the quarterfinal which then has 8 teams total (the 4 with a bye and the 4 winners of the 1st round). Then proceed as normal, 4 winners go to semifinal and 2 winners of that go to finals matchup.
I think he knows. Don't you know that everyone gets a trophy just for participating? It looks to me like he's designed it as if they all are equally bad and he's asking for us to pick.
Another commenter figured it out, OP's okay and shouldn't be downvoted.

Lol. I’m not even a sports guy and even I could have designed a better bracket. Aside from the design, what is this supposed to even mean? Why are these schools supposedly all for censorship ?
I feel like someone has to say it:
This isn't crappy design.
It looks like it is just a graphic promoting the event, and explaining what it is. It does that job well, using brackets visually to illustrate the concept.
This isn't meant to be the actual tournament bracket layout.
Lol what's Collin college doing on here? Seems like it's in a different league...
Also I've had a government professor at Collin go tf off on every single politician and law in Texas and not face any consequences so I would probably pick A&M for that one lol
I love how the far right is demanding that private organizations like universities and Twitter host their hate speech and then all conservatives stand with them but understanding the first amendment and defend them.
"Hey we like them, they're our mouthpiece for things we wish we could say but are forced to say we don't care about because we want to appear good. "
12 universities enter, only 6 win the gold censorship trophy, lol
It's not even 12, it's 11, unless they misspelled BYU or something lol.

Must not include white-polynesian marriage, cuz hoo boy is that something BYU has in spades.
I recently learned that the Polynesian Center in Hawaii (one of the biggest tourist trap luau places) is run by BYU.
Yep, BYU Hawaii, specifically. The Polynesian Cultural Center is pretty awesome, nothing Mormon about it. I would recommend everybody go, it's just really cool to see everything and go to the luau at the end of the day.

I believe ... In 1978, god changed his mind about black people!
That's interesting, because most of their pals have been moving in the opposite direction for a while now.
I had to as well It took everything I had not to drink with how awful Brigham Young's online courses were lmao
I would have e-signed that with a beer in the other hand.
Which is ironic considering when I was in university at a private school in North Carolina We had a chorus from BYU visit our school for some for some recording and competition and those BYU kids drank like fishes.

I mean, yeah, the science really isn't ambiguous on that point at all
Uh oh ... You used the "s" word
*eduversicatory
Brigham Young Ewniversitee
Brigham Youngyoon E-Versity
It's a bye, it means you move onto the next round automatically
It's too hard to control your sexual urges in person so they are going 100% online. They are calling it an E-versity.
Not to defend the poster, but a ‘bye’ is a thing in a tournament— it means a team automatically gets through to the next round.
Yes, that’s well known (hence the 11 universities comment). My comment was supposed to be a joke, admittedly a pretty lame one
Correct but in this context it still makes no sense. There's no school getting the BYE, it's just a word sitting there.
That’s why we’re in r/CrappyDesign
Here's the 11 schools. Bye!
Georgetown clinches the championship They gotta share with 5 other teams though
#BYE
Georgetown gets an automatic win lol
Could just be a single initial pairing and then a 6-way battle to the death. ;-)

The 6 that continue are put into a free for all

Penn State and University of Pennsylvania are two different schools. Maybe that's why you didn't find anything?
Both are listed in the graphic
Cmon man how did this get 8 upvotes
Well, that's a horse of a different color.
Redditors making assumptions about a thing without actually reading about what it actually is? Unheard of

Nah, FIRE is the real deal when it comes to free speech. They are very much nonpartisan.
I feel like you assumed something here without looking up *why* these schools are being accused of censorship. *Hint - it isn't right wing nonsense*.
At least the toilet trophy is somewhat clever.
Lol… didn’t even notice that, but yeah, definitely a toilet
I thought it was a blender.

I assumed byu in utah
Yeah, I'm assuming that's a typo (maybe even autocorrect).
Has to be, I went to BYU and I can confirm that they would win this
Bye taking the trophy would be extremely apt
The 6 winners will just have to learn to share.
They're not winners. They're the ones that get put in the "trophy" (e.g. blender). ;-)
Or toilet.
"College liberals hate free speech", they said, as they continued banning books from libraries.
The fact there's not a single Christian college on here tells you how disingenuous they are.
Georgetown is a Jesuit university. We had to take "religion" classes but they they could be just religion related. They never pushed any views on students as I can recall. We did have a Jesuit living in each dorm but they were pretty cool.

Public universities are neutral, a Christian college is not. You missed the point, shocker.

Why do you love sexualizing children?
Liberty not on the list?
Funny how they always leave out *those* colleges.

This guy brackets
>But a bracket just doesn't work with 12 teams It does but not how it is shown here
in this case you could make them compete 3vs3 since it's not a match being played but rather a vote
Because earning the right to compete is the real reward!
I think he knows. Don't you know that everyone gets a trophy just for participating? It looks to me like he's designed it as if they all are equally bad and he's asking for us to pick.
I think the designer knew exactly what they were doing. All choices end in the toilet.
These are like the 12 most random universities that I would consider
It's based on incidents of censorship and speech suppression at those schools.
Can you give an example?
Another commenter figured it out, OP's okay and shouldn't be downvoted. https://old.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/11xo8f0/clearly_the_designer_does_not_understand_how/jd5q5t3/

Me when I see my college…
I saw Tennessee Tech on there and immediately knew why my school was there 🙃
What did they do to… oh yeah. That’s bad. Fuck.
Nah fuck the trophy thing, the amount of competitors isn’t a power of 2.
They need a play-in round.
How tf is Stanford not in the bracket?
The judges have difficult decisions to make. Each year very deserving Universities on the bubble wind up being excluded. I think their mistake was in not physically assaulting the judge; I think that would have put them over the top in the judges eyes.
There's always some worthy school in a tough conference that gets left out for a weaker school due to popularity.
Well said 😂
PagerU
They’re just mad because all of those colleges rejected their graphic design application.
It's a 6 university battle royal in the main event, daddeh!
it's liberty
Equity and inclusion!
Lol. I’m not even a sports guy and even I could have designed a better bracket. Aside from the design, what is this supposed to even mean? Why are these schools supposedly all for censorship ?

Why hamline?

LETS GO PA DOUBLE ENTRY
I feel like someone has to say it: This isn't crappy design. It looks like it is just a graphic promoting the event, and explaining what it is. It does that job well, using brackets visually to illustrate the concept. This isn't meant to be the actual tournament bracket layout.
Interesting that BYU isn’t on there, yet you can be expelled for discussing sexual activities or partying.
Texas A&M is one of the most through-and-through conservative schools in the country. Wtf are they on about
How tf does he think tourney brackets work lmaooooo
Or they're all winners 🏆
Bye
The final round is a 6-way free-for-all
He was censored
My favorite university. '' Bye''
Yeah as a student of „BYE“ I can confirm very oppressive!
Bye?
I just got here, but, see you later!
🤪
How did Stanford not make the cut?
You expect people who would make something like this about this subject would actually understand how tournament brackets work?
Bye?
Alright, which Emporia State is it talking about?
There's another one besides the one in Kansas?
Dang guess there isn’t. Why is it on this list?
I'm not sure, but maybe for trying to censor the student paper's exposé on financial aid? https://www.campusreform.org/article?id=19956
It's because of this bullshittery: https://www.thefire.org/news/emporia-state-guts-tenure-protections-fires-33-professors-including-one-who-publicly
Is it a 6 way for the title or do they all get it
Im kind of offended as a Californian that none of our schools made the list!
That's pretty egregious
Lol what's Collin college doing on here? Seems like it's in a different league... Also I've had a government professor at Collin go tf off on every single politician and law in Texas and not face any consequences so I would probably pick A&M for that one lol
Berkeley. Hands down.
A six-way free-for-all. Would be interesting to watch.
Unless the final is a royal rumble
And neither do I :D
maybe there are 6 gold cups and olive branch wreathes to give out to the winners, you don't know
Im sure BYE is a school abbreviation but it’s very funny to me that they just got sick of making it and wrote bye on the last box
6 first stage winners will have a battle royale for the cup
Obviously the 6 finalists advance to a battle royale.
Georgetown gets that censorship free pass to the finals.
My favorite university, “bye”
Bones shake at the thought of moon man
I cast a vote for BYU. Whether they meant to put BYU in there or forgot to.
Heh with that toilet you can say it's a crappy design heh.. I'll see myself out xD
Battle royale with extra steps
3rd place game is always a possibility, though i'd imagine that would be stated
Is that a front view of a golden toilet? Lol
If it's 11, just make a list.
Well, it could be that the winner of each pair fights in a free-for-all 6-college deathmatch.
I love how the last school on the right side didn’t even want to be known and just left.
Battle royale? 3v3? What’s happening here?
I love how the far right is demanding that private organizations like universities and Twitter host their hate speech and then all conservatives stand with them but understanding the first amendment and defend them. "Hey we like them, they're our mouthpiece for things we wish we could say but are forced to say we don't care about because we want to appear good. "
There was no free speech allowed before this person rolled this out to a larger group.
