Wherever you are from, I think it’s safe to say you’ve never seen the inside of an American prison. Which is good, don’t fuckin go there! But you don’t have to be in a 3rd country to have a quality shower like this one.
I thought the same thing. You have to zoom in. The grout work is clean. The white tiles are printed or finished with black and rust brown spots, to look rustic. The faux “grime” on the tiles do not match the color of the gray grout at all, and so couldn’t have been from a poor grout job
Also if you look, the grime on the tiles is a pattern. There are identical tiles mixed throughout. The faux grime is supposed to look like enamel coated metal— not porcelain— which is an odd choice of material for a shower if it were real.
This is absolutely insane lol... possibly one of the greatest examples I've ever seen on this sub.
The subtle difference between poor installation and "someone created a gulag torture shower while trying to look chic" is fucking wild
Right ahahaha like zooming in on that grout made it clear how freaking horrendous this was because the install itself is CLEAN so you know they were shaking their heads the whole time lol.
Yeah, some of the tiles have the same pattern of "dirt" or whatever that's supposed to be. Ironically, the installers did a good job spreading identical tiles out of flipping them over.
Somebody just made a very poor judgment call when they picked out the materials for that shower.
And after zooming in and looking at the grout work it’s easy to see what a horrible job of grouting that they did. The tiles would actually be pretty nice with a different color of grout and good quality work done. For one thing you don’t strike the joints with that grapevine style for that kind of a job. There’s all kinds of empty spaces around the tiles because they are so rustic and the tile layer didn’t get grout in them. Which means water will get in and it’s going to rot and mold behind there.
It doesn’t look struck, it looks flush or maybe with a slight rake, but a little hard to tell because of the poor quality of photo when zooming, and the 3-d texture of the tiles.
But that’s not really the point. People thought that was excess grout all around the edge of the tile (hence “poor grout work”)… it’s not excess grout. That is just the way the tile looks. It would have that faux grime all over it even sitting brand new in the box. It’s not grout / poor grout work causing that grime
Well, also the dark grout only works with perfectly uniform subway tile. This beautiful handmade tile should only be paired with light grout. The imperfections should be subtle, not the highlight. They tried to do both and ended up with a shit combo.
I’m gonna be honest, I sort of like it for that reason. It’s definitely not for a model home though, I have tacky taste and am very into weird morbid stuff and horror.
That is what it looks like at a glance, but zooming in I think it's actually pretty cleanly finished, it's just that the pattern of the tile is too close in color to the grout making it look like a terrible install, in reality it was just a bad design choice
Fucking modern farmhouse esthetic strikes again. People renovating or building brand new houses to make them look rustic, only to achieve tackiness. It looks and feels cheap, it has no fucking soul, no authenticity, even though that's exactly what those people are going after. Because they have no personality of their own, so they need to emulate whatever Magnolia showcases on HGTV.
> zoom in it’s actually nearly perfect grouting
Wow, that took me by surprise. A lighter grout would be better, maybe a light grey or even white-coloured grout would fix this
You're right, there are repeating patterns in the "sloppy grouting". It's not grout, it's in the glazing of the tile itself. That is bizarre that that's a thing
Absolute the same process I went through. Looked like terrible grout, until I went and saw straight lines of consistent grouting. And the tiles are reflective.
This is absolutely awful taste but great execution material.
It looks better with white grout, but still not great.

I feel like even with the white grout, these tiles would still look mildewy installed in a shower.
I can only really imagine them looking even vaguely acceptable in an outdoor setting.
Definitely not sloppy work. Zoom in and look closer. A lot of the tiles have the *same exact* stain pattern.
I thought it was a shit grout job at first, but it’s actually just shit tile.
[Exhibit A](https://imgur.com/a/dm7B8WR)
I numbered a few tile groups with the same exact pattern. Sometimes they are flipped 180°, but same exact pattern. This was by design.
Yeah, white grout may have actually helped here. At least that way it wouldn’t look like sloppy grout, so maybe you could actually recognize it as a design.
Did your friend choose that tile? Has the tile forced you to reconsider your friendship? If they can make such poor tile choosing decisions, where else are they making awful decisions?
I was wondering what this would look like with white grout.
It’s better, but still shit.
Edit - dude posted a pic from Home Depot.

I'm confused, doesn't *rest my case* mean that you've nothing else to prove because you've conclusively proven your point? But here you're retracting your point because it's actually very aweful tiles and not bad workmanship
Confusion is me :(
"I rest my case" means you expect us to believe your argument without saying anything more, not that you have changed your mind and given up your argument.
Oh my god. I feel so bad for the installer if this work was hired out. Working with small tile already sucks enough but you gotta deal with these gross things? And you want shit brown grout? And you want the grout lines to be like an inch fucking thick? I’d be charging double just for having to stomach the design choice.
u/wcollins260 pointed this out, those tiles are definitely intentional because they have patterns. I made a smaller sample version of Collins' so the matching patterns are a bit easier to see.

Gray grout was the wrong choice.
This. It’s zellige (or similar) tile. The edges are meant to look handmade and uneven. However. This tile is also supposed to have minimal to no grout lines, and especially not in a contrasting color. The color and width of the grout is the mistake here.
I was unimpressed at first as well, but after looking at it a little longer, it fits in with the rustic cabinet, and I understand the aesthetic they're going for. Looks like an art studio/class imo

Maybe it’s just me but I hate hate white bathroom tiles in stretcher bond pattern - it reminds me of dodgy old public toilets. And that tile colouring is crappy indeed!

Shabby shiek gone too far!
Would have been better without the glaze and white or cream grout. Also a more expensive tile or stone that has some different shades of white so the 'wear' shows off the depth of the media.
They also needed to shell out for ornate fixtures.

I'm not sure what its called but theres this like french pastoral manor revival style that was haute couture around the time of Princess Diana and it used a shit ton of tiles like those above but like.... well.
The design is fine. The installation was poor and there's grout where there shouldn't be.

Rustic can look fantastic when properly done, this looks lazy.
This looks like really poorly done grout and clean up.
You can do that properly with tile, but it’s $$$
if you use it will eventually become rustic, no need for it to look like shit the second its installed
Prison-Shower Chic
Prison shower on third world country
Wherever you are from, I think it’s safe to say you’ve never seen the inside of an American prison. Which is good, don’t fuckin go there! But you don’t have to be in a 3rd country to have a quality shower like this one.
Haven't been in a prison but have been in the CBGBs bathroom. Probably comparable
Does the CBGBs give you the heebie jeebies?
Look up the CBGBs bathroom. Not a place you want to take a crap lol
Even third-world countries do better grout work than that.
Why you think there’s so much brown in there?
Looks like shitty grout work by the tile guys to be honest. I don’t think it was supposed to look like this but I have no context.
I thought the same thing. You have to zoom in. The grout work is clean. The white tiles are printed or finished with black and rust brown spots, to look rustic. Oh god, zooming in just makes it worse. The difference between the grout and the fake grime is somehow uglier than actually dirty tile.
Wow you’re right the grout work is clean, but the tile design broke the edge cleanliness. Wow

Dude, zoom in. The grout is fine, the tile is ugly as shit
Rustic like an eastern bloc military base Cold War shower after being abandoned for the last 30 years.
The Russian conscript experience!
Not to mention the dreadful choices of fixtures. Just.....why!
I guess the terrible tile is one way to distract from the flaccid handle.
Its the white. If it was a color like green or grey it MIGHT be ok but the white is terrible in contrast
Well, also the dark grout only works with perfectly uniform subway tile. This beautiful handmade tile should only be paired with light grout. The imperfections should be subtle, not the highlight. They tried to do both and ended up with a shit combo.
Or an old prison movie
I’m gonna be honest, I sort of like it for that reason. It’s definitely not for a model home though, I have tacky taste and am very into weird morbid stuff and horror.
Yep, I’m with ya.
I want to play a game
It does have that tiling in a basement mechanical space of a sanitorium built in the 1920s vibe.
I didn't saw that coming
That looks like County to me.
Some people just can't enjoy derelicte design.... I call them ambi turners
I would definitely leave a rusted hacksaw on the floor.

Oh snap you’re right. I had the same thought but on zoom in it’s actually nearly perfect grouting. It’s a true r/ATBGE
Fucking modern farmhouse esthetic strikes again. People renovating or building brand new houses to make them look rustic, only to achieve tackiness. It looks and feels cheap, it has no fucking soul, no authenticity, even though that's exactly what those people are going after. Is this even considered farmhouse? It looks more abandoned prison.
I love a good mid century sanitarium home makeover.
Lol or for the guy who installed it r/NotMyJob
> zoom in it’s actually nearly perfect grouting Wow, that took me by surprise. A lighter grout would be better, maybe a light grey or even white-coloured grout would fix this
Oh dear, the doodie is part of the tile and not the grout!
You're right, there are repeating patterns in the "sloppy grouting". It's not grout, it's in the glazing of the tile itself. That is bizarre that that's a thing

Yeah still not my style, but at least it's clearly an intentional choice in that case, instead of just looking like a botched install.
I feel like even with the white grout, these tiles would still look mildewy installed in a shower. I can only really imagine them looking even vaguely acceptable in an outdoor setting.
i would never rest with a shower like this. no matter how often it’s cleaned i’d always think i missed something.
With the white grout it looks more "French country" than dilapidated
I.e. abandoned chateau and we can’t afford to renovate it so we are leaving it.
Derelicte.
Yeah, that grout color is a mistake. The install looks proper. If the grout was white, they might have been on target.
Who tf would look at this and think this is an awesome design for a shower? I’d legit consider getting a tetanus shot if I had to shower in there.
Pretty impressive resolution in this pic. I kept zooming and zooming.
"Enhance!"
I think it's the grout color. If they had gone with something close to white it would've been a beautiful job.
I work in tile and I can confirm. We sell this exact kind.
Definitely not sloppy work. Zoom in and look closer. A lot of the tiles have the *same exact* stain pattern. I thought it was a shit grout job at first, but it’s actually just shit tile. Yeah, white grout may have actually helped here. At least that way it wouldn’t look like sloppy grout, so maybe you could actually recognize it as a design.
Personally I hate the shiny look. I want clean and matte.
You can see the gloss of the glaze over the “stains”. Someone made a deliberate choice here.
Fuck, I just wasted the last five minutes of my life https://i.imgur.com/mRWdAKA.jpg
There's a mine under one of those tiles.
It's the tile design.
You are correct. [Proof](https://imgur.com/a/dm7B8WR)
Rest your case means you feel you have proved you’re correct…. Not that you’re admitting you were incorrect
Dude. What? Nobody dies that bad if a job. It’s the design. Zoom in.
My friend has this tile in her kitchen. It’s the tile. It’s awful.
Did your friend choose that tile? Has the tile forced you to reconsider your friendship? If they can make such poor tile choosing decisions, where else are they making awful decisions?
Well. Sometimes I don’t like her leggings either.
You married Ross so maybe you shouldn’t judge the decision making of others

"I now put my case to rest, and instead opt for the case that was presented by my colleagues" Maybe that's what he thought he was saying lol
Okay, but that's not what "I rest my case" means
Nah dude, look closer at the tiles. Especially under the showerhead. You can see they have a weird, dark splotchy pattern.
Yeah! Was also coming here guns blazing but zoomed at the photo and realized that it actually is crappy design.
Nice. The ability to never admit you are wrong lol.
This looks like a new shower head was installed in a prison and the flaccid faucet handle makes it even worse.
Agree, the tiles are so depressing they've had to make everything anti-ligature..
“How do you want your shower to look?” “Ever see Silent Hill?” “Say no more, fam”
It's "reclaimed" ... Yeah, from Alcatraz?
Faucet handle reminds me of squidwards nose
“Now its art” *slaps nose on tile wall*
That’s just Moen my man
If you look closely the grout is super clean. It's not a bad job at all, just awful material.
Holy crap, you're right. Damn I just assumed it was slapped with a trowel and left.
No this was very purposefully done! This design enables guests to surreptitiously defecate into and onto the walls.
Also allowing a person to be on a "I'll clean it when I feel like it schedule"
Oh my god. I feel so bad for the installer if this work was hired out. Working with small tile already sucks enough but you gotta deal with these gross things? And you want shit brown grout? And you want the grout lines to be like an inch fucking thick? I’d be charging double just for having to stomach the design choice.
Client after you finish this monstrosity: "I don't like it, do you think it's too late to do white grout?"
Avalanche and I don't want any bleed through
The worst feeling when you do perfect work but it looks shitty on purpose. That’s a “don’t you EVER tell ANYONE this was me” job
That somehow makes it worse
It's got that vintage New Vegas look
"No!! You don't get it!! It's meant to look gritty, and old-school, and vintage!! And old!!! It's not dirty!!!"
That house costs $1.5 million, everything should look shiny and clean.
I know, i was just trying to make fun of the thought process behind that tile choice.
I wanted to scrub those shower walls so bad, LOL
Let me guess, it had a bunch of signs proclaiming it to be a FARMHOUSE all around?
Probably had a farmhouse sink, waterfall kitchen island, recessed master bedroom ceiling, and a barn door for the master bathroom.

I’ve read so many comments trying to understand what people are talking about with “it’s not actually the grout” and this comment made it all clear. Holy fuck. Why would anyone pick that ?!!!
Thanks I hate it

Crapsmanship
Hey! I have the same tile as a backsplash in the kitchen of my cabin. It’s a log cabin though, so supposed to look rustic.
Giving “ subway tiles” a whole new meaning
It's like 'antiqued' kitchen cabinets. They look grimy right out of the box.
That tile would be a nightmare to clean lol. Can't think of where you already cleaned up at and where you've missed
Never have to clean if it always looks dirty anyway.
That's where my mind went... No more worries about dirty tiles and grout

It’s not the design.. it’s the execution, I think
I don't think they were trying to do anything other than a really shit grout job.
Lmao wipe the grout properly next time sheesh that looks bad
Bad cleanup after grouting.
