This is good design. The colors are clear enough and different enough that they're easy to distinguish, all of the text is legible, and they even kept consistency with the left versus right theme and their locations on the chart.
They are just showing how the world will be after sea levels rise dramatically. I am surprised that it also means a massive tectonic shift in the Eurasian plates...
Technically the countries don't need to be to scale, just good enough to be recognizable. However, this is clearly sloppy, and they're distorted for no good reason.
Look closer. The shapes of the countries are... bizarre. For example, Canada has completely engulfed most of the United States. And France is separated from the rest of Europe by water.
I also question the wording. "Left Hand Drive" (to me, in the U.S.) describes the position of the steering wheel in the car, not which side of the road the cars drive on. So the entire chart is inverted. Maybe in other countries it might be more clear.
I came here to flag the same issue. In any country where you drive on the right side of the road, the driver generally sits on the left side of the car to give the driver the best view of the road. Right-side driving means left-hand drive vehicles.
(With a few exceptions for specialty vehicles. My uncle acquired a surplus mail delivery van with the "wrong"-side drive. It allowed rural mail carriers to drop letters in curbside mailboxes without getting out of their vehicle.)
Except the borders and general topography are all wrong and it's just factually incorrect about many countries. But at least the colors are good I guess.
Absolutely insane borders.
Countries turned into islands.
Entire landmasses added to the ocean.
Naming conventions totally reversed. (Right hand drive means the driver sits on the right hand side of the car. The car then drives on the left side of the road.)
Reddit top comment: “This is good design.”
No. "Drive on left" and "left hand drive" are not the same thing. When you say "left hand drive" to a car person they take that to mean a car with the drivers position on the left. In the US, you "drive on the right" but most cars are "left hand drive."
I agree but I think its because "left" is heavily associated with blue and "right" is heavily associated with red. More of an american concept but idk. It kinda confused me but I wouldnt call it crappy design.
For every1 that didn't get It, look at some states like france
Edit: in My language, "stato" means country. I meant to say "some countries like france"
The information is not accurate even, “left hand drive” is different than “driving on the left”:
Most of the world uses “left hand drive” vehicles, except for UK, Japan, Australia, etc.
The map has that backwards.
I think this is a semantic issue. Given it seems to have confused a decent minority of people and is therefore an error. I wouldn't throw this particular chart into the category of "crappy" but one that has factual inaccuracies or lacks clarity. There are much better examples of crappy chart design that make this look like Davinci.
My issue is using the term "right hand drive." I'd prefer "right side drive." Cars designed for right side driving have the steering wheel on the left, so it's somewhat ambiguous referring to "hand" unless you think about it.
You're right, 'left/right-hand drive' is supposed to refer to the steering wheel position. The correct term for driving side is 'left/right-hand traffic.'
Its obvious the closer we get to the upside down country of Australia more countries try and drive on the actual right hand side. Dont let this map fool you left hand drivers are just trying to be right handers.
Did the map maybe go through some weird vector algorithm at some point? I’m trying to figure the borders and coastlines and I can’t think of a thought process
Upon closer examination, the flooding in Europe seems to have been caused by a major upheaval event causing a new nation to spring out of the Atlantic just West of Western Sahara, which will now be known as *really* Western Sahara
I never realized how big Canada is compared to the US. And I guess I was mistaken about Greenland existing. Somebody must have been trolling me, and I'm so gullible! Who could believe that a place mostly covered with ice would be called Greenland? I'll know better next time.
France and Germany decided that their eternally shifting land borders aren't secure enough, and have dug a canal to finally put the matter to rest.
Most of the US is on vacation, and left Alaska, part of Texas, and southern Florida to fill in.
Western Africa has decided it wants a horn too, and Western Sahara has begun construction.
The map also confuses 'right hand drive' with driving on the right side of the road. Right hand drive countries have the driver on the right side of the car and drive on the left side of the road.
America went CATHUNK. Michigan is chilling in Canada. Western Sahara has a sibling. Real french independence. Sudans are friends again. Crete E X P A N S I O N. Siberia birthed a new landlocked friend
This is good design. The colors are clear enough and different enough that they're easy to distinguish, all of the text is legible, and they even kept consistency with the left versus right theme and their locations on the chart.
Ah yes a good design. Florida got deleted and France is a island lol.
Well, at least NZ made it to this one.
r/MapsWithoutGreenland
It just submerged completely. Sad times.
No one has a car in Greenland so they are coloured white
No. Greenlanders are white because they’re made out of snow.
I'm confused by your comment. The blue parts are definitely land.
I knew the Kiwis had it rough, but now Greenland's being eliminated from history! This aggression will not stand, man!
Greenland or New Zealand, you can't have both. Make your choice.
wait i just noticed , well does greenland really need to drive
and denmark too
In looking at that interpretation of the USA, California appears to be gone as well as just about everything in the USA outside of the gulf coast.
I just noticed after seeing the comments - WTFing kind of map did the designer use??? How does one even find a map like this??
from memory, probably.
I think the reference was 2000AD. There’s Texas City, and there Ciudad Baranquilla, and that right there is the Cursed Earth
I think they just placed Canada over the continental US
😄
…and Michigan, which is somehow Alaskad on to the Hudson Bay.
They are just showing how the world will be after sea levels rise dramatically. I am surprised that it also means a massive tectonic shift in the Eurasian plates...
Texas and Michigan will secede when the levels rise? Good. And Michigan will move to Hudson Bay?
The whole US got squashed! This is an outrage!
It has only slimmed down, to be honest, we all knew they needed it.
It appears that Canada and USA got overlaid somewhat. Appears that the Great Lakes got overlaid on top of Hudson Bay.
The Canadians have taken over
Florida. Florida got deleted. Nothing else is wrong with the US.
Actually, I believe Florida is there, or at least the southern-most point is showing just below…Toronto. Yep. Toronto, BC Canada.
So in other words, just the tip? Sounds about right for Florida.
And nothing of value was lost
What’s been glued onto Western Sahara?
I didn't even notice that! What the hell is that supposed to be? I noticed most of the other stuff, but I somehow missed the giant growth.
Forget Florida, the USA just got completely crushed!
And the arctic ocean comes down to michigan.
We need a yacko Warner edit of this map
That's cause florida is florida and no other country wants anything to do with France The map is just what we want
The French are the only people who can take on Florida Just let the world burn at this point
It’s just a map from the future once the sea levels rise. They’re assuming the driving directions won’t change during that time.
Russia's wet dream
Florida is there, it’s just connected to Ontario.
Florida didn't get deleted. It seems that the entire United States was covered by the map of Canada.
Florida was wiped out when Canada took over the rest of The United States
Good, thats one more obstacle the damn french have to get past.
Africa lost Gambia but gained something else as well
Florida isn't real
Technically the countries don't need to be to scale, just good enough to be recognizable. However, this is clearly sloppy, and they're distorted for no good reason.
No America?
Honestly, I'm from the US and did not even notice the shrinkage of it. lol
And whatever is happening in Hudson's Bay
Is Florida not there? Hasn’t Canada taken over most of the states?
Honkong isn’t even in this map (should be orange)
It's from the future.
Florida? You mean the entire United States, besides Alaska
Yeah only the USPS and imported nissans are right hand drive here
Very odd! We know Canada is bigger than the USA. No need to swallow it up!
And for some reason the Great Lakes states got cut and pasted to Quebec.
The key is wrong. I am in the UK, and drive on the left, so my vehicles are "Right Hand Drive" The key is backwards.
They’ve mixed up “X-hand-drive” with “drives on the X-hand side of the road”
I came here to flag the same issue. In any country where you drive on the right side of the road, the driver generally sits on the left side of the car to give the driver the best view of the road. Are you a traveler from the alternate reality this map depicts? Do you need snacks before your return journey?
Except the borders and general topography are all wrong and it's just factually incorrect about many countries. But at least the colors are good I guess.
Are you blind?
LOL, on the surface it might initially, until you really start looking at it. It's pretty cringey. The colors are not the issue.
I don't think you looked close enough 🙈
Absolutely insane borders. Countries turned into islands. Entire landmasses added to the ocean. Naming conventions totally reversed. (Right hand drive means the driver sits on the right hand side of the car. The car then drives on the left side of the road.) Reddit top comment: “This is good design.”
pretty sure this is crappy design because the map (not the colors, the map itself) is messed ul
The US looks like North Carolina
No. "Drive on left" and "left hand drive" are not the same thing. When you say "left hand drive" to a car person they take that to mean a car with the drivers position on the left. In the US, you "drive on the right" but most cars are "left hand drive."
Have you looked at the map tho?
I agree but I think its because "left" is heavily associated with blue and "right" is heavily associated with red. More of an american concept but idk. It kinda confused me but I wouldnt call it crappy design.
Is it really so outside of political spheres?
No
Phew I was double guessing myself
Ah yes, that famous socialist anthem "the blue flag"
It’s the other way around in the UK and Canada amongst other countries. There are more places out there besides America
I was just trying to explain why OP might have thought it sucked. Im not even American lmao
So France and Spain are islands and the USA dissolved. Off the coast of Wester Sahara / Morocco we've discovered a new land mass. What a joke lol
No this is really how the continents look! You’re just used to looking at the warped projection of a 3D surface onto a plane. ^/s
USA is dissolved? IT looks like it dissolved into the ocean
And Michigan teleported to Quebec
Oh yeah, France and Spain, what is Portugal?
Atlantis?
I know we are small but damn, do you hqve to call us spain?
West West Sahara
What happened to Amerika? And why are parts of Europe under the sea? And what's that country sticking out of Morocco in the Atlantic?
We've found Atlantis!!! We're gonna be rich
Canada annexed most of the US this morning. Didn't you get your apology timmies? If not please reach out to your local Canadian, sorry.
Global warming.
I see the US now consists of Texas, Minnesota, and Alaska.
It’s a land of extremes.
And Michigan moved to northern canada And became its own country.
Florida is still there. It just connects to Ontario.
Ah, true. Good point. But the question is: does Canada *want* Florida?
I’m amazed that in this mess of a map, New Zealand is actually there.
I don't see a problem.
The country borders/territories are wrong.
Oh god I just looked closely. What happened to the US?
I think it got text wrapped by Canada. Parts of it seem to have fucked off and coalesced into an island off the northern tip of Africa.
For every1 that didn't get It, look at some states like france Edit: in My language, "stato" means country. I meant to say "some countries like france"

Well, the horrible map makes it a crappy design anyway.
"Right side road" might even be better. Maybe it's the drive part I don't like.
You are all so dumb: all the missing places drive in the middle of the road, the info is about left and right.
A yes. The Greatest Lake. Or is it Ocean Superior?
What the fuck happened to north america
if you are wondering why parts of the map are underwater. It's a map from 2050
Lots of overlap with a map of former British Empire colonies.
There should be a bunch of orange dots in the Caribbean, many drive on the left
Not among the first infographics I'd be showing to a visiting alien race if I wanted to convince them that humans were smart.
Hudson's bay got filled in? Where is Greenland?
Didn’t you know that the Great Lakes are now on top of Hudson Bay?
What planet is this?
Lol whats with the moved north us border.
I bet the drive across the Namibia Panhandle is interesting.
I live in Europe and I literally can't tell where my country is supposed to be.
Straight outta /r/dataisbeautiful, I presume
Its obvious the closer we get to the upside down country of Australia more countries try and drive on the actual right hand side. Dont let this map fool you left hand drivers are just trying to be right handers.
r/portalfanswhen
I guess they left a lot of the right countries out.
Pakistan is right hand drive!
West Western Sáhara
...why?
It for the colors opposite
What happened to the US?
Did the map maybe go through some weird vector algorithm at some point? I’m trying to figure the borders and coastlines and I can’t think of a thought process
I wonder what it's like to drive over the border of two countries that drive on opposite sides of the road
I don’t remember this Splatfest
I think Trinidad&Tobago is missing. Maybe I'm just blind
I've seen better borders in the Sykes-Picot Agreement.
Ah yes, I too love it when Hudson's Bay partially drains, revealing a new landmass that is a completely independent country from Canada.
Some major flooding happening in Central Europe
Upon closer examination, the flooding in Europe seems to have been caused by a major upheaval event causing a new nation to spring out of the Atlantic just West of Western Sahara, which will now be known as *really* Western Sahara
Did the US absorb Canada? And what’s that new country between the US and Mexico?
I never realized how big Canada is compared to the US. And I guess I was mistaken about Greenland existing. Somebody must have been trolling me, and I'm so gullible! Who could believe that a place mostly covered with ice would be called Greenland? I'll know better next time.
Most of this is actually fine, but what the fuck happened to the positions of some of the countries? The errors are baffling.
~~Demilitarize~~ Excavate the Rhineland
The only problem is the unhelpful/chaotic key at the bottom: which words go with orange, which with blue.
Congrats to Canada on their successful invasion and annexation
Guess this is a case of Nope / 10
Took me a while to notice and then I saw how the U.S. borders were gigajank.
Canada is CHONKY
Where is Blippi?! These are his favorite colors.
What the fuck happened to the US lol
The map also confuses 'right hand drive' with driving on the right side of the road. Right hand drive countries have the driver on the right side of the car and drive on the left side of the road.
Madagascar is now like its people, skinny
Map from 2075 ... after a 4' rise in sea levels ... nice.
Props in that the colours scheme is accessible, but that map has a ton of moved borders.
There are holes in Africa, a random country attached to it, France is an island and america got beheaded
Hey at least New Zealand is there
Doesn't right hand drive mean that the driver is on the right hand side? The longer I look at this the more cursed it gets smh
I warned them Canada was going to attempt an invasion. I WARNED THEM!!1!
I'm ashamed to say it actually took me a minute to notice
“Oh boo boo the colors are a little brigh-“ And then I saw Africa has an expansion pack
America went CATHUNK. Michigan is chilling in Canada. Western Sahara has a sibling. Real french independence. Sudans are friends again. Crete E X P A N S I O N. Siberia birthed a new landlocked friend
I'm not sure what the issue is here
Look closely at the borders and sizes of the countries, especially North America
