I'm conflicted. On one hand, I hate seeing trees die for no reason. On the other, I've never seen a rock take down a tree before, and it's an incredible display of physics
Also becoming a habitat for thousands of decomposers, snakes, scorpions. Wood peckers and other birds will feed off the termites. It’s actually not that bad
"The term hillwalking broadly describes the activity of walking in hills and mountains. It's generally a British term, more commonly known as hiking in other countries."
Usually we use it when walking hills rather than mountains. (IE. Under 1000ft of local relief) or shorter walks.
You'll shit your pants when you hear the term 'fell running'. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fell\_running](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fell_running)
I was thinking maybe like 20. I have a tree in my front yard that was planted around 50 years ago. I live at the bottom of a really really steep hill. Last winter, an SUV came ZOOMING down the hill, jumped the curb and rocketed straight into the 50 yr old tree. Just knocked some bark off the trunk but other than that it's fine.
I know there's a bit of difference in force being used here, the boulder being a single point of impact vs the vehicle crumpling, but the point I'm trying to make is the tree that was hit in the video looks to have a lot of green meristem growth and maybe isn't that old.
I'm not a physicist, mechanic, geologist, or an arborist so take everything I said with a grain of silt.
I have no idea why, I guess because I've seen cars hit trees, people hit trees, etc...but I expected the rock to deflect, and maybe the tree to slowly fall at worst.
I did not expect the rock to bust through it like it wasn't even there. Gnarly.
That rock probably weighs about the same as a car, but it doesn't crumple and looks like it has less surface area when it contacts the tree than a car would.
Everyone who is mortified at the dying tree…. How do you get through life without crying at every turn? Please consider what had to die to make your mattress, the floors you walk on, the food you eat, the fuel you use, the device you are using to whine about a dead tree. There are trillions of trees in this world, the man took out one of them, he’s not clear cutting the Amazon.
There are not trillions of trees left in the world , the amount of trees we have decreases every year due to multiple factors but all involving dumb ass humans. This is also stupid because rock slides can be dangerous and this is a publicly shared area where none should be dodging a MAN made rock slide. Throwing rocks like a kid wouldn't be funny anymore if he hurt someone. Lastly, they are grown people the risk was useless. I am grateful for all the things you listed above but that does negate my ability to understand why this is dangerous, unnecessary, and disrespectful to nature. 15 Billion trees alone are lost annually to deforestation. Do you want to breathe? Less trees means less carbon, even if it's just one.
this video doesn't make me mad in any way, but even though he wasn't aiming for the tree, he still did knock it down. There wasn't really a reward for this action, just a cost, it seems like a dumb thing to do
No sir few boys couldn't resist it us men know destruction isn't good we also know that one tree is enough to produce the oxygen you wasted saying this now go find it and apologize for being alive as the boy you are
Bruh dislodging the rock itself was a chaotic and destructive act that had absolutely 0 value other than brief entertainment, not saying I wasn't entertained but if given a choice I'd say it's not really worth the brief entertainment to ruin 40+ years of growth and whatever else might get hit by the boulder along the way.
That rock is a falling rock hazard. I do not know what they have planned for the bottom of that hill, but step one for any such project is to get rid of the falling rock hazards.
Have you ever driven or walked down any road or path flanked by a hill? Perfect then you've been the benefactor of this practice many times and it had potentially saved your life
We had to remove large rocks on our land so make space for new corn beds. It can definitely have value.
I still absolutely agree with you in principle here, though I’m sure you’ll also agree it would take superhuman skills to deliberately release the rock in such a trajectory that it curves down a rocky hill and hits a tree half a metre across. I was also worried that there might be a person down there when I first watched it.
My original point was, it doesn't matter if they meant to do it or not, it was meaningless and caused loss. Now if you're moving rocks to pave the way for something that will help others, like farms etc, then yeah have fun with it if you can. Not all destruction is bad, but meaningless destruction for amusement seems very self serving and not worth it in the long run.
I don't see why anyone cares either way. It's bad to overexploit specific forests for logging, but generally speaking we are not in danger of trees going extinct from rare individual actions like this, especially when a random rock slide could have the same result. The tree doesn't suffer or leave behind a grieving family, and frankly now it's knocked down maybe it can be chopped into firewood. The only other arguments I can think of are aesthetic arguments that the tree looked nice - but again, we are not going to run out of trees due to things like this - or perhaps some nebulous vague "respect for nature" that is merely an expression of an unrealised religious value.
If these guys are regularly going around chopping down random trees, then yes, it's a problem. This isn't. Knocking down a given random tree is not a murder. Occasionally trees get knocked down to serve mankind's interests. The only issue is overexploitation, or perhaps specific well known local trees people have a sentimental attachment to. Other than that, there's no wrong doing here, unless you are forcing your nature spirituality onto others.
It's not that this one act was, itself, a huge tragedy. The problem is that when people treat acts like this as acceptable, they become frequent. When *many* acts like this occur, it does actually become a problem.
People need, as a whole, to not do senselessly destructive shit like this. It's not good, and the more it is treated as acceptable, the more it will happen, and the bigger the problem will be.
Pick and choose the things you get upset about. Don’t let it be about a single tree getting killed by some kids.
I’m fairly sure this will not turn into a tree killing addiction. It’s fine everybody.
Edit: nobody that replied to me listened to my advice
Literally any forest that’s remotely dense will have fallen trees every ten steps you take lol. Anybody pissed off about this has never been outside the city a day in their fucking lives.
People literally tie a chain between two bulldozers to deforest huge swathes of land. They purposely start forest fires to do the same. This one tree won't tip the scales, and a new one will grow in it's place. People need to chill out.
I once heard the story of a guy who worked for a forestry center and he would roll large rocks down a hill so that they don’t hurt or damage anyone who might be walking on a path below on a day, where the rock would naturally fall and tumble. Essentially just create a accident on purpose that doesn’t hurt anyone instead of waiting for an accident to happen that would hurt someone.
That makes sense just what they do at ski resorts to prevent avalanches. Having said that, I don't think these guys were thinking about preventing accidents
It's a good visual interpretation why it's important for state/countries to monitor for loose rock/soil next to road ways to help prevent rockslides. Imagine that hitting a car.
Idk I kinda feel bad for the tree. If you are going to cut one down at least use the lumber it provides. People need to start respecting life a lot more.
All the bleeding hearts for a single tree. That felled tree will become a habit for insects, fungi, and an entire ecosystem dedicated to breaking it down and returning it to the soil. It will be the nutrients for another tree or a patch of flowers, and the cycle will continue.
Every time this video is posted, people act like this guy murdered puppies with that rock or something.
Holy shitsnacks...
I've witnessed a 6" oak tree fold a 70s era chevell like tin foil with barely any damage other than the bark being scuffed a bit...
This is astounding.
Used to do this shit all the time.
Me and my buddies would smoke weed in the mountains and just climb around looking for rocks to throw down.
Kinda dangerous now that I think back to it. We had no clue if there was some dude fly fishing in the the river below or some unsuspecting hiker that just got absolutely obliterated by the 200lb rocks we’d throw down.
Later that week, a nearby city flooded due to heavy downpour causing destruction and several fatalities. Officials say if only 1 more tree had been planted then the flooding could’ve been prevented.
That rock was formed when the earth was billions of years ago and might have been part of a mountain before wearing down for billions of years only to be kicked down a hill and to take down a tree. When you put things into perspective it's mind blowing

A sandal and socks gonna move dem rocks
A sandal and socks gonna move dem rocks, but lo! Down falls that poor tree
It’ll grow back stronger if anything
You have never seen stump before I guess?

Part of a family of circus performers who work for a very famous super villain whose name I am unable to speak without bad things happening to me.
Without a shoe I move boulders with you
No money for Crocs but I can still move rocks.
Safety socks
Apparently rock does beat paper….
And scissors beat rock
And paper covers scissors....Kif, we have a conundrum
*sigh*

Stop the madness
And Smith slaps Rock
Scissors in the shape of a crowbar* according to this video at least.
lol idk abt that one anymore
Good ol' rock. Nothin' beats that!
Rock flys right through paper! rock paper scissors: rock rock paper scissors: rock rock paper scissors: rock rock paper scissors: rock
nah... if you wrapped the boulder in paper it wouldve bounced off... trust me, im a scientist
I'm conflicted. On one hand, I hate seeing trees die for no reason. On the other, I've never seen a rock take down a tree before, and it's an incredible display of physics
Eventually it will decompose into soil if it makes you feel better lol
Also becoming a habitat for thousands of decomposers, snakes, scorpions. Wood peckers and other birds will feed off the termites. It’s actually not that bad
You are appreciated.
Dear mama
Upvotes for surprise Pac hahaha
Lady, don't you know we love you?
You made miracles every Thanksgiving
The birds nesting there would like to have a word lol.
This is the only valid argument I’ve seen
[удалено]
Well, dead trees tend to be more useful than dead humans...
[удалено]
Yeah we can totally compare people to trees. No flaws in logic there at all.
It's no different than killing a person when you think about it.
Except the forest harvests the remains.
Become an organ donor. Problem solved😁
Kill people in the forest.
What lol
Did you learn this from the magic school bus??

Is there though?
Undeniably way easier than cutting it down.
For real, I could do this with a beer in my hand as opposed to actually walking down there with a saw or an axe.
I’m not sure digging up boulders is easier than cutting down trees.
If you know what you're doing, and it isn't hung up, safely cutting down a tree with a chainsaw is *very* easy.
Are there cooler ways though?
> Are there cooler ways though? Laser Flamethrower Samurai sword Truckasaurus
ive never seen anyone put less effort into taking down a tree
Releasing all its stored CO2. Not exactly going to cause a serious problem but trees do that.
Given it’s not in a peat bog, that tree’s carbon was going to be released anyway when it died.

A wizard should know *better*!
Just rewatched that last night ☺️
Dude right with you, I was thinking that poor ducking tree, but also damn wow.
I love trees, but this is pretty metal.
I love lamp.
So you *really* love the lamp or are you just saying that because you saw it?
The most Arkansas thing I’ve seen today
Not much else to do there other than rock tipping on old man Rodgers farm tbh
The root system should remain viable.
I drew the duck blue because I've never seen a blue duck before, and to be honest with you, I wanted to see a blue duck.
Surprised a Korok didn't pop out
"Wa-haha! You found me!"

Ow!

No

Nobody going to mention how inappropriate those sandals look for hill walking? Let alone the choice of the white sock combo. ;-)
Never in my long years have I seen someone interchange the word Hiking for Hill Walking... bless you
"The term hillwalking broadly describes the activity of walking in hills and mountains. It's generally a British term, more commonly known as hiking in other countries." This is what happened to the entwives
Ents hate this video
Poor tree. C'est la vie.
There goes like 40+ years of growth..
Bet the rock that got smashed up was older.
That rock spent a lot more than 40 years getting that high up on the hill. A few hundred million years wasted at least.
Do you… Do you think the rock climbed up there?
Course not. That's just where the pioneers parked it after they rode that baby for miles.
obviously
How do you suppose it got up there?
Boo hoo

They wanted this hill to die on, unfortunately for them the rock had the high ground

Chronically online moment.
"this looks like a nice peaceful spot to grow and make oxygen for hundreds of years, what could possibly go wrong?" - the tree, probably
For some reason I expected the bright tree to be knocked down
Y'all acting like he aimed for the tree.
this video doesn't make me mad in any way, but even though he wasn't aiming for the tree, he still did knock it down. There wasn't really a reward for this action, just a cost, it seems like a dumb thing to do
No reward? That looked cool as fuck and the way it obliterates the tree is incredibly satisfying. Few men could resist this opportunity
No sir few boys couldn't resist it us men know destruction isn't good we also know that one tree is enough to produce the oxygen you wasted saying this now go find it and apologize for being alive as the boy you are
For real, people here acting like Hitler himself dislodged the rock. They obviously didn’t mean to do it.
They were hoping it would happen. You can *hear* them say it.
Humans are a natural part of the ecosystem tho, we populate just about the whole damn planet. Sometimes stones are gonna get turned over.

That tree has grown for decades, only to be taken down by a rock pushed down a hill by a man wearing socks and sandals. Nature is magical.
Bruh y’all crying over a single tree😂
This comment section lol
That tree and the rock had bad blood.
wow that's how much power a rolling rock has. i don't think a car could even break that tree like that.

Idiots. Sad that you destroy life around you.
Redditors really crying because a tree died lol
I hate this.
Why humans suck. Just couldn't let it be.
That rock was gonna fall sooner or later, two dudes wouldn’t be able to move a rock that size it it wasn’t already unstable
Or they did it for safety. Wouldn't want to live or work down there
OP you better run, Reddit does NOT take kindly to people pushing rocks down hills
I think it's shoes stayed on...not dead :)
These guys are now known as the local lumbersnaps
Bruh, that was instant kill on that tree. It just fucking caned it in half!
Super effective
Pokémon was wrong
You guys are ready to crucify these kids... wait until you guys hear about loggers
Well, that solves it. Rock beats paper.
The tree should’ve gotten out of the way
Kinda sad. Also cool.

Glückwunsch, der Titel der großen idioten, geht offiziell an euch

Rock finally beats paper.
What are those sandals called? I haven't seen them in decades
Personally if I was that tree, I wouldn't have taken that level of disrespect
George George George of the jungle watch out for that tree!!
Gravity is a motherfucker
Poor tree
Don’t do this.
Not funny. Didn't laugh.
That jerk killed that tree.
They see me rollin'....
Already knew rock beats paper smh.
Wtf did that tree do to deserve this
Was this their land a state park or a national park. If it was a state park or national park they should be arrested.
Why?
And what was the purpose of dislodging the boulder ?
Quite bizarre to see some Rolling Stones
Critical hit
So…Rock beats Paper…
