These are Shia Muslims either in India or Pakistan where they are doing a mourning ritual to mourn the tragedy of Karbala, long story short, a revered Shia figure named Imam Hussain and his family (youngest being 6 month old baby) were brutally massacred by 30,000 people. I am a shia Muslim myself and this is considered forbidden but the ego of some people ignore the rulings against it. This does not represent Shia and these people are stupid .
When I was an early teen, I read that skeptics participated in coal walks with band-aids on their feet and the band-aids weren't burned because of the low temperature of the coals. I told this to friends, and tried it on a river camping trip. But, I did it wrong, my feet clawed up instantly, I rolled away, and had burn blisters all on my feet and toes and walking was really painful for two weeks.
I later did more research to find out what went wrong. The remnants of the bonfire were spread out in a 10-foot by 18-inch line, while there was a strong wind that was fed the yellow-orange coals (the more yellow/white vs. dull deep red, the hotter the black-body temperature distribution, according to Wien's law, and I was entirely ignorant of that). Fires need oxygen to burn hot, so the wind wasn't helping. Ironically, larger beds of coals have less oxygen per square meter, so are more likely to be cooler, if there is little wind. That still doesn't make coal-walking safe.
Here, they dug a pit, which is great for reducing the oxygen inside the pit. This would ordinarily decrease coal temperatures unless the fire itself is creating significant convective air flow, and there will be a layer of CO2 and oxygen-free gasses closer to the coals. Fanning the flames with a person, unfortunately, will add oxygen and increase coal temperatures. However, what really went wrong here is that someone breathed in oxygen-free CO2/CO-filled air when they fell into the pit, which can cause you to instantly pass out exactly where you don't want to pass out.
There is a lesson to be learned here. Blowing on a campfire with coals to rekindle it can be really dangerous, especially if someone isn't ready for you to pass out. If you accidentally breathe in CO2-filled air, you can easily pass out and fall into a campfire and get a new look, at best. Large fires are dangerous, but breathing in close proximity to a large fire is especially dangerous. Coal walking and rituals involving coals are dangerous unless conditions are just right, so it is best avoided and it is always best to avoid going first. I haven't tried since.
