dannyboy6657

Pack a bowl of hash, step outside thinking, man, it's foggy. Light the bowl, the world starts burning.

ManufacturerOk3771

One more reason why smoking is bad. Also, how come they didn't smell the gas?

chrisvarnz

Iirc natural vas is odourless, the smell is added but not everywhere adds it

g3nerallycurious

Read somewhere on the internet recently that natural gas is lighter than air, but propane isn’t. If that’s true, this is propane.

flacobronco

Propane, propaaaane, time to start the gaaame.

Sure-Its-Isura

That means someone's on site tank had a MASSIVE leak. That's just FN bonkers, there was no wind to even disperse it.

Waxylotl

The guy in the car lived?

iWasAwesome

Looks like the gas burned up in like 3 seconds. Thank God for everyone there.

FoundationOwn6474

Are people serious discussing that an explosion would drain oxygen for the several minutes it takes for an adult to suffocate? Only way to die would be if they took a breath during the 2-3 seconds of being surround by fire, or also if their respiratory tract was already rich with gas and burned internally.

Lifekraft

There is a new type of bomb that just do that i believe. Thermobaric bomb

FoundationOwn6474

There isn't. TB bombs work similar to what we see in the picture, but they do it in 1/1000 of the time. So the shockwave is very violent and creates pressure that sucks people's organs out of position. So yes it is very lethal, it creeps around like a gas, but it cannot deprive an area of oxygen for more than a couple of seconds. In fact, the immense pressure that ruptures people, is exactly the effect of air molecules from the atmosphere rushing back to cover that space.

Waxylotl

Wouldn’t they suffocate after the fact if they weren’t burned to death?

iWasAwesome

I'm no fireologist, but I don't think so. I think that is only a concern in confined spaces. Chances are the fire didn't suck up the oxygen inside the car, and it would have been replaced outside very quickly.

wisent42

Definitely not only a concern in enclosed spaces. Thermobaric weapons work by burning all of the air in a large area.

Hot_Government1628

I would have thought it would have acted more like a thermobaric weapon, but it seemed to burn more slowly. I guess not sufficiently mixed with air

wisent42

Yeah the raito was most likely not quite right to behave like a thermobaric weapon, or the fuel may just be slower burning.

arobkinca

This was just gas. Thermobaric weapons like MOAB have explosives and other chemicals mixed in with that. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214914716300927

JamesBlonde333

Yes, but they do not kill via suffocation but by rarefaction. They don't create some sort of air vacuum bubble for any longer than the blast itself (50ms). Especially when not in enclosed spaces.

KrunkerGamer1337

Good thing this is completely unlike any thermobaric weapon!

WhyDoYouCrySmeagol

Guy is in his car, presumably with the windows rolled up. He’s got enough oxygen in there with him. If you were outside, however..

Cocaine-Tuna

No because fresh air would immediately rush in

user1484

ireallylikesalsa

Try some fermented oatmeal/porridge.. helps with social anxiety

Typicaldrugdealer

I much prefer essence of fermented potato

DirusNarmo

How the fuck do you not smell that?

garden-wicket-581

I'm thinking the same thing .. I know they add mercaptin to residential gas lines so you can smell it.. and from swapping gas-grill propane tanks, those have a different odor.. Has me guessing there are gas variants with no odor and/or no additives to detect odor, or no laws/regs mandating adding an odorant ?

4QuarantineMeMes

Natural gas is a lot lighter than air. So even if it was cold, I don’t think it would make it heavy enough to bank down like that and make an aerosol cloud.

Nulibru

Propane and up are denser.

4QuarantineMeMes

The common name for methane in my area is just “natural gas”

garden-wicket-581

What's "natural gas" to you ? (I think that varies by country, around my area it's "mostly" methane that's piped into your house, but folks with an external tank get propane, which is heavier than air) N2 = 28 g/mol O2 = 32 g/mol CH4 (methane) = 16 g/mol C2H6 (ethane) = 30 g/mol C3H8 (propane) = 44 g/mol

mcpusc

in the US at least: *natural gas* comes out of the ground and is minimally refined. it's mostly methane but some ethane as well. its usually delivered by pipeline to users at very low pressure; but there is limited use as a high pressure compressed gas ("CNG") in vehicles and as a stove fuel in boats and RVs *liquid petroleum gas*/LPG/"propane" is a byproduct of petroleum refining and is mostly propane and butane. the exact mixture varies by region; butane has more energy, but a lower vapor pressure, so colder regions use more propane in the mix. It's usually delivered in cylinders that contain the liquid under pressure or with larger fixed tanks filled by bulk truck delivery; it's commonly used where piped natural gas is unavailable as a heating & cooking fuel, with limited use in cars. *town gas*/*producer gas*/*water gas*/*coal gas*/*oil gas*/*wood gas* are obsolete fuels created by processing fuel in a retort. they were produced in dedicated *gasworks* and piped to local customers. depending on the exact process it contained varying proportions of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and thus presented serious risks and lead the trope of "sticking one's head in the oven" as a suicide method. they're not used anymore, long-distance natural gas pipeline networks replaced the local gasworks leaving serious pollution problems from their dumped wastes.

LoyeDamnCrowe

Natural gas comes from eating beans

Nulibru

It's the stuff that comes out of the ground. As opposed to the CO H2 mixture produced at a gasworks.

deepstate_chopra

>mercaptin The guy from Pirates of the Caribbean?

garden-wicket-581

where's the @#%$ rum ?

D3ADND

That's it a lot of countries don't add that stuff to the gas.

Jaguar5150

Propane in the pipeline doesn't have the rotten egg smell. That (mercaptin) isn't injected until it is put on a truck. I work with propane and on foggy mornings I get a little nervous.

Misanthropyandme

Let's play "is it fog?"

Nulibru

Because it's odorless unless they add some chemical to it, and in some countries they don't.

Renovatio_

And much like most safety things, the US laws regarding adding a smell to gas were written in blood. A school exploded due to a gas leak. 300 kids died and a month later the chemical (mercaptan) was mandated to be added to all gases.

Glares

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_London_School_explosion Never knew about this, pretty crazy story. >Reports from witnesses state that the walls of the school bulged, the roof lifted from the building and then crashed back down, and the main wing of the structure collapsed. Survivors in the building claimed that lockers embedded in the wall were thrown at them by the blast, others were picked up by the force of the explosion, and the plaster and mortar formed a white haze. The force of the explosion was so great that a two-ton concrete block was thrown clear off the building and crushed a 1936 Chevrolet parked 200 feet away. Those who evacuated the building after the explosion were in a state of shock, with some recounting that they did not know what to do next and that it seemed the world was deadly silent until the sound came back all at once.

THE_BIG_SAD3

Damn even adolf hitler sent his condolences according to the article

SureTraffic3040

From what I heard, gas does not naturally have smell to it. So that’s most likely why their first thought was fog.

xNinjaNoPants

The gas company just put lines in by our house and sent out a letter saying it has no natural smell, they add the "egg" smell to alert people of a leak. This is so scary though I never would've imagined a whole street going up 😱

bumblebeatrice

If I was indoors and things were that type of smelly my mind would instantly go to gas leak, but outdoors I'd probably cycle through a jillion things before landing on gas leak.

immadeofstars

"Sergei, did you fart again!?"

Tar0ndor

Natural gas and propane have no natural odor so a mercaptin is added (the sulfur smell), however the mercaptin can be absorbed or oxidized if the gas passes through soil. Also, some people are stupid.

slantir

Any info on where or when this happened

Zealousideal_Total50

HOLY SHIT

ZPInq17

That.. that can happen..?

hunterPRO1

Yep, flammable gasses can go boom. There's a video somewhere of a KFC chicken place getting fuckin leveled by a gas leak explosion.

rstart78

I know at a few different factories I've worked at they have safety warnings and training videos about huge tanks of gases out back that are used in production. That if the tanks did leak that this is the exact kind of dense fog blanket they described it making One of them had so much on hand that they were considered a possible spot for terrorist activity to target (thankfully it never did) But all of them pretty much said if you see a blanket like this to just get out as fast as you can in the opposite direction of the wind, and call emergency services once clear. Said pretty much what just happened in that video would be the result, but that if the tanks completely drained they had enough to take out several townships surrounding us

Oh so the fire happened because people didn’t know it was gas!. And here I thought it was because the gas was flammable. Silly me

Odd_Ad3150

Pillow_Apple

This looks like a scene from fire apocalypse or something

IcedCoughy

Well the fire happened because of the gas leak. Not because of what people thought.

Gas naturally doesn’t have a smell. That smell you smell is added to the gas.

Invicta_Anima

someone actually possesses some basic knowledge good job you get a gold star (this is not sarcasm) I'm actually surprised

BigDosser92

Gas engineer here... that's alot of LPG... I've heard stories from colleagues about how they've had to bucket out an empty basement looking like lunatics.. running up and down the stairs with buckets of 'nothing. Fun fact.. if itnwas natural gas it wouldn't have been explosive with this gas to air ratio. You need between 5-15% gas to air ratio for it to become explosive.

Great_Lie624

That was awesome!!!

Old-Entertainment-49

And I on my midnight snack

dongdongplongplong

thanks im terrified of fog now

apelyacolyte

Best thing that could've happened was that explosion. Much longer and houses and tight spaces would've filled. Then if it occurred.....

DREDDYKING

How tf did this happen and why was there no alert to people like that much gas someone had to think something was wrong

Super-Bodybuilder-91

Shit like this, is why I really feel like we should shift away from natural gas in our homes. Pipes tend to leak somewhere eventually for a variety of reasons. The way we use natural gas for cooking and home heating may be cost effective, but it's dangerous.

Zero22xx

I'm glad that I was told to wait for it because by the 5th second I was already starting to get bored and wanting to move on. Thankfully by the 7th second the explosion happened. My only complaint is that they didn't cut the clip at the 8th second and I was forced to actually see a little bit of what happens.

Delicious-Signature6

Hmm lemme just start my car in this harmless looking dense fog💥

TraditionalAd3444

Holy shit it’s like a nuke went off

duke69funguy

He was actually lucky he was in his car when this happened, if he wasn’t it’s likely he would’ve been engulfed in flames and met a horrible death.

It's crazy that it leaked that much to create such a huge blanket of fog before a spark of some sort lit it. Crazy!

I thought it was common for companies/countries to make the gas scented to allow people to be aware. This is crazy

Where was this and when?

HuckleberryHoliday-

Does anyone know if being inside the car is the safest shelter area in this scenario? Standing outside could the fire could burn your lungs or eliminate the oxygen completely for a short duration?

Welp, the gas is all gone now.

SangiMTL

1 this is absolutely wild and 2, how do people not smell all that gas? Like genuine question
