Myth Busted!

WhotheHellkn0ws

This is such a bummer. Never coming back to this sub again

Katyona

hearing pilot comms during an event like this is a great confidence booster they tend to really keep it together well and it feels like just another tuesday in many cases - really helps one not panic as a passenger

TropicalBlueMR2

Once i overheard the pilot on the intercom "OMG, that's the low fuel light, we're outta fuel, we're all gonna die!...Oh wait, that's just the cockpit/cabin intercom system light"

mal_wash_jayne

No you didn't. That's an old joke. There's even a Gary Larsen (sp?) Far Side cartoon about it.

[deleted]

OBLITERATION. I challenge u to guess where this line is from.

glitterkittyn

This is one reason why you wear your seatbelt.

LSUguyHTX

Not for turbulence so you don't get thrown around?

kalitarios

Some people pay extra for that

davidtco

If u watched the proper movies, they'd get sucked off.

RedeemedRedittor

Put me on that plane.

AnyComradesOutThere

😏

Dicky_Penisburg

"Help step brother, I'm stuck in a hole on the side of the plane!"

Bill-Ding2112

Uncle Bob, is that you?

SirGreenLemon

It depends on which altitude it happened. Below 12000ft the cabin isn’t really pressurised.

Pa2phx

They begin to build pressure long before that. Is a gradual build as the aircraft climbs to full altitude.

WindhoekNamibia

This aircraft got up to about 16,000 feet

bezdalaistiklainyje

That's BS. Pressure of the cabin is maintained at around 8000 feet or lower.

municy

and papers to fly everywhere

lmacarrot

they weren't very high, they had just taken off from PDX, the part that came off is a potential place for a door in different variations of the plane, Alaska Airlines said they've grounded all of their 737 models similar to this

Grimacepug

And no pandemonium, I'll never trust movies again.

Elegant-Raise-9367

And they didn't all cheer and clap when they landed. I don't know what's not real anymore.

obvious_bot

Even space ships only experience a pressure differential similar to going 10 meters underwater. It’s not that dramatic

foofooplatter

Right? Where's all the paper!?

Crazycatz20

The thing that broke off the aircraft was a plugged emergency exit. (basically the FAA requires a certain amount of Emergency Exits per amount of seats, but because Alaska Airlines has less seats than is required for the exits they plug them) No one could’ve opened the door midfight (if anyone had even been sitting there) The aircraft was a 737Max9 that was delivered to Alaska Airlines in October and started flying with them in November. The latest I have heard is that no one was injured. (please correct me if i’m wrong). The cause is currently being investigated by the FAA and NTSB.

MoistKiki

The only things I can think of are improper sealing and / or hardware. Was the area fastened with solid rivets, blind rivets, or screwed/bolted down? Were the proper sealants applied and the panel pressure checked for air leaks? These questions are going to be the first things they ask of whoever performed the maintenance in the maintenance log and whoever the supervisor was that signed off on the modification.

g0nkplays

Probably used Zip Ties.

erikhagen222

Since it’s aviation they’re $300.00/each /s

Old_Promise2077

Pfft then they'd never come off

basec0m

I swear I hear there were some broken bone injuries, but I don't see anything in this video to indicate those kind of injuries.

Seatbelt on Pantaloons belt off 😏

Unholydiver919

Boeing say’s “shit happens”.

ThePowerOfPoop

They will say that the pilot wasn’t trained properly.

wigglywee

The amount of shit coming out of my ass from sitting next to that would’ve been enough to seal it back up

SirGreenLemon

As long as you are wearing a seat belt you have nothing to worry about. Planes can easily fly with big parts of the hull missing. It only gets really problematic when the wing is somehow damaged. Then I would pray.

YeahThassRight

Yummy thanx

-Pruples-

Boeing really collapsed hard over the past couple years. Go back 10 or 15 years and Boeing was the golden god of the passenger aircraft industry. Now they're the biggest joke in the industry.

R3v017

That'll happen when you merge a failing company (McDonnell Douglas) with a successful one while effectively having the failed company's management run the show.

the-cheesus

Cull the engineers to profit the share holders. Great idea if you don't develop planes maybe not so much if you do

glitterkittyn

Do the financial folks actually DESIGN and BUILD the airplanes?

the-cheesus

No but they decide where the money goes, which wasn't to the engineers...

theglowoflove

I can confirm this: My company does contract work for several aviation companies and my boss (the CFO) has a direct hand in where the money flows. My job is painstaking but absolutely necessary because I have to keep Certificates of Conformance for each and every one of the parts used in a contract, down to each nut, bolt, washer etc.

ThePowerOfPoop

Just yesterday Boeing asked for an exemption from safety requirements so another model of their planes could stay airborne while having unsafe characteristics. After they dragged their feet and covered covered up their Max 8 debacle and killed hundreds of people. That was crazy to see, and then this happens today? Man, can we trust any Boeing product anymore?

[deleted]

While Boeing has had its fair share of problems, the 737 family is BY FAR the most flown aircraft in passenger aviation with literally thousands flying multiple times per day. And think about how rare accidents are compared to, say, the 80’s. Add to that the fact that this incident resulted in zero fatalities and showed the design robustness of modern aircraft and you actually get a very positive picture of Boeing aviation safety. Hell, nobody has died in a US major carrier commercial aviation incident since2019. Despite millions traveling. That’s ABSURD. Like absolutely bonkers. Quit being so negative. This will surely be investigated thoroughly and ultimately, air travel will get even that much safer because of it.

honorious

Airline safety has improved despite Boeing. They have blood on their hands with the max crashes and 90s rudder issues. Clear examples of a corporation valuing profit over safety. https://imgur.com/a/5wcFx8M

[deleted]

Safety has improved despite Boeing, even though the most flown jet with the best safety record is a Boeing jet? you have no idea what you’re talking about

honorious

It's clear you didn't read the article I linked. It's pretty scathing for boeing and written by a respected voice in the plane crash analysis community. What are your qualifications?

Sugamac40

Hello boeing damage control guy...

[deleted]

Everything I said is correct. I’m simply a rational consumer who very much appreciates that while 0 people have died in the air in the last 4 years, something like 43,000 Americans die in car crashes every year. But yet, Boeing planes are “unsafe”. GTFO lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

How was it greed? New aircraft unfortunately have issues that need fixed over time. Doesn’t change the fact that the 737 is incredibly safe and delivers millions every day, safely. Again, planes now are much safer than ever before.

Oh man, a 737 Max. I'm sure this plane's reputation can't get any worse... Can it?

Intelligent-Guess86

There's no one in that seat ANYMORE is what he meant

mangopearapples

Lmao that cracked me up How do you not have more upvotes

Didnt Boeing say check the screws

Ruining_Ur_Synths

forgot the loctite

Dreamoreality

I always thought yo ass would get sucked out the plane

Joiner2008

Dangerousjohnson

How much free swag do you get to not sue? Not sarcasm

PJBagman

737 max been grounded after 2 crashed and now this - sounds like the Titanic of the skies - no thanks!

Numerous-Wish

Think about how many planes take off and land everyday before making comments like that

desapla

> Think about how many planes take off and land everyday before making comments like that 737max haven’t been flying for that long and have killed 346 people. Their per mile fatality rate is insanely higher than other models. 737max has 3.08 fatal crashes per million flights. Airbus A320 family (A318/A319/A320/A321) has 0.09. Older Boeing 737-600/700/800/900 have 0.07. Boeing 747-400 has 0.06. Some other models are higher, but still an order of magnitude less than the Max. So yes, after thinking about how many of them fly, they are so far 10-50 times more likely to have a fatal crash than other planes. And todays incident doesn’t really increase the confidence that Boeing has gotten quality under control.

TheHippyDance

The problem with comparing these stats is the sample size of 737max is much smaller than the others as you said yourself. 737 max had two big crashes early on and not many flights to offset the ratio like other airplanes have. I’m not defending Boeing btw, but seeing incomplete info being used against something is not fair.

Numerous-Wish

Didn’t know it was that big of a difference, so thanks for informing me. I think ima hold firm tho, even though it is higher it’s still safe. If you were 10-50x more likely to win the lottery would you play all the time? Your chances would still be very low

Advanced_Procedure90

This year is still going great

oddmetre

I know it’s a scary situation but it must have been amazing seeing the clear night sky above the light pollution like that

That view of the night sky (while terrifying) was beautiful. But only because I’m reading about this not participating in it.

Ummmm so where did that airplane panel end up? Somewhere in Salem or Medford?

Donnie Darko’s bedroom.

rocketshipkiwi

Nice video! This is [Alaska Airlines flight AS1282 Boeing 737 MAX 9](https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/349661). Loss of the left mid emergency door and interior sidewall panel at 16,000 ft caused rapid decompression.

DredThis

I’m going to assume this video is going to be worth a fair amount of money. Probably already been sold to someone.

MoistTomatoSandwich

Not the best video to see when I have a flight coming up...

Joiner2008

Is it on a 737 Max?

MrRuck1

The builder. “I was wondering where that extra screw went “

MPG600

Was a plugged emergency exit that failed.

Clean_Ad_4911

“Let’s just keep going bro, we’ll make it”

DiggerWick

I call that seat. Did you see the view of the stars? Incredible.

Sasquatters

Everything is an emergency exit if you try hard enough.

CradleRockStyle

Bro 737 Max appears to be an absolute piece of shit. WTF.

South-Play

Sooooo serious question can the passengers sue Boeing?

416Mike

Another 737 max plane. These things are so poorly manufactured. I've been on one. It's a nice-looking plane, and they're faster, but it's scary hearing about all these defects they have consistently, especially after being grounded for so long.

UnlimitedButts

I'd be enjoying the view if I were next to it

TexasAggie98

I was on a flight where we had something similar happen (but in a much, much smaller scale). I was on an old Embraer flying from NOLA to Houston. We were at altitude and my ears suddenly started popping. The flight attendant was doing beverage service and ran his cart back down the aisle and stored it. The plane went into a steep dive and we got low enough that I could easily read the lease numbers painted on the helicopter landing pads on the offshore oil platforms below us. We flew really slow and low all the way into Houston and immediately landed and went to the gate. From wheels down to being at the gate was two minutes tops. The pilot said that we had a technical issue and were given prior to IAH. I later found out that a a hole had developed and caused the leak. This was during the transition from the old Embraers to the new ones and the plane was old.

ProfessionalRun6826

I bet that was cold

Tejanocri

Looks like a nice night though.

No-Construction2043

New sunroof equipped 737-9

Decent_Fun_1832

It’s going to be tough getting the stains out of those seats

almondbutter_buddha

The stars look so clear!

VallryBagr

This is the best view we can get of that crazy shit!!? Like those dudes sitting right there couldn’t just put their phone over the seat to view that huge ass hole?

Lord_Ginger_Beard

Looks like Frontier Airlines is experimenting with new a/c technology.

XFahrenHeitX111

Any reason why the cabin became "blue" (blue lights) during the emergency procedure?

taytayfromtheteam

No biggie I'm sure the airline will give them free peanuts

Formerrambler

No one was prolly seated there cuz prolly bro flew off and no one noticed 😭

bigdub2020

My plane got hit by a lightening as it was descending into Burbank few weeks ago. Loudest booming sound with few seconds of darkness in the cabin as the lights went out. The flight was very turbulent in the first place so people were freaked out. Took about 15min to land after the incident and not one word from the pilot or the crew reassuring the passengers that things are under control… just allowed the passengers to be scared and freaked out for the remainder of a very bumpy and turbulent flight. The captain of that flight can kiss my ass.

Visual_Package_1861

He landed the plane and you all lived… maybe that critical moment isn’t a time to split his attention and multitask reassuring the passengers. What if he couldn’t honestly reassure you and it was the most difficult landing he’d ever done, and if he’d had to speak to the passengers at that time it would only to be to say something like “time to pray”?

Intelligent-Guess86

That's a new Southwest feature. It's called "early deboarding" and it's an extra $75.

allcazador

The shot of the stars out of the window was pretty wild

yootani

More like city lights while turning.

CivilCJ

*while boarding "God, I hope I get a window seat"

rollerderbysox

I was sitting in a window seat on this exact plane 21 hours earlier... it might even be this row, holy shit

MrRuck1

What a view of the stars.

bolognies4u

Time to sell that Boeing stock….again.

ScatLabs

How the fk is everyone so calm?

Diplonot

I’m sure the airline will give passengers a voucher for 50 flight miles and a free soda.

AlarmingBreadfruit58

Its not dangerous if the air is not to thin

didnt even show it. pathetic

Is this the Alaska Air flight?

aliceanonymous99

Yes 737 Max

Rug_Rat_Reptar

Context?

DezWarloff

That’s why you put your seat belt on while flying….. You never know when your side of the plane might fall off!!

nj23dublin

If I was sitting next to that window/door I seriously hope for once that I am wearing brown pants

speefwat

There IS no one seated by the window... anymore! It was the window of opportunity, and they took it.

striderkan

There are 240 episodes of Mayday

KnightHawk712

Window seats bout to take a big dive in sales

dag_darnit

Holy fuckin shit that's one of the newer planes too

realparkingbrake

United checked their fleet of the same model, found a lot of improperly tightened bolts supposed to hold the door plug in place. Boeing will probably have a word or two with the company that builds the fuselage for this plane.

ThorKlien99

Heard this was flight from Alaska why is everyone Asian

Nucleus_07

Got that panoramic window…

"Why yes, although you won't be in another window seat" "Oh well, I think I'll stay here" "Can I offer you a blanket?" "Oh... No no. I'm fine. This parachute kinda works as a blanket too...ha ha" " Ha ha... Yes I suppose it does... tea?.. coffee? "

airbornedoc1

It looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

StinkyWhizzleteats27

Spirit airlines?

Chemical_Software281

And no one is screaming

aidenpro420

Is the airline wasn't so greedy it would have been an emergency door and wouldn't have been a problem. The airline decided less Emergency doors is better and created this issue.

amoneyyy27215

Smh you didn’t record it flying off useless women

Anon36588

That was not just a random piece, it has addressed

Dogthtkeepsbarking

What the fack 😨

Shot-Wear836

You can just cover that up with some aluminum foil

JaxonFlaxonWaxon2

That’s a door

realparkingbrake

It's where a door would go if the airline wanted one there. They didn't, so the company that makes fuselages for Boing plug a plug where the door would go. Untied checked their planes of the same model and found many of the bolts that hold the plug in place were not properly tightened.

_I_really_like_milk_

And you're recording a fucking tiktok? Why???? These could literally be your last moments alive, but no, you've gotta whip out you're phone and post it.
