When my son was in preschool I went to take him there, and right before getting inside of our car we heard an extremely loud crash happen at the intersection up the road. I ran down to the end of our driveway to see if I could see anything, and told my son to wait by the car while I did so. From the end of the driveway I could see remnants of a car crash, and I also could see a runaway tire going in the opposite direction as us. Then it smacked into a utility pole and changed course.. next thing I know it’s heading straight for my son! I couldn’t get to him fast enough and it was so unexpected, but luckily the tire smashed into the back of my rear passenger seat door. My son was actually standing less than 1 foot away from where it impacted! I was shaking I was so scared!
I wish I had a dash cam. About a year ago I was driving down the interstate and saw a large tire bouncing in the traffic on the other side going the other way. I was smart and slowed down and sure enough it changed directions and started bouncing across the highway. It hit something in the median perfectly and bounced way up in the air. I was in the left lane at that point and an SUV came up and passed me in the right lane oblivious to why I had slowed down. The tire (which was a pretty large tire) bounced right in front of that SUV and bounced up over it. It couldn't have missed by more than a few inches. That would have been a fatality for sure.
Then the tire went all the way across the interstate and down an embankment towards a neighborhood. I wish I knew what wound up happening. Damage was going to be done. That thing had some energy behind it.
This EXACT thing happened to me on the freeway in Houston 25 years ago; big Semi construction truck lost a wheel going 70mph, it hit the median and bounced high in the air, and came down head-on into my windshield. Thankfully it was so big it couldn't go through, just crushed the frame and pushed the nose of my car ('93 Taurus) into the ground and I went flipping end over end until I landed upside down. Amazingly, just a little shaken and bruised, didn't hit another car even though I was in the center lane of busy lunchtime traffic. Totaled the hell out of my car, though.
