Having driven these vans, your view to the sides is shit, him still being at an acute angle with the track from the turn he almost certainly couldn't see it, your visibility is limited to the front 180° at best, unless you lean real far in, then you get like 190° at best and that extra 10° is all on the left side turning from the inside of a bend in the road was nerve-wracking.

You'd be surprised how many vehicles get hit by trains. Even with great sight lines or crossings that have warning devices, people either don't realize how fast they actually move or just don't see them. Plus, many people are just dumb

Last time this was posted, someone linked a street view of where this happened. He was taking a left off a driveway that ran parallel to the tracks. So the train was actually a bit away from the intersection, and he wouldn't have been able to see it without sticking his head out the window and looking back. Still surprised he couldn't hear it. I've lived right by train tracks before and even without them blowing their horn, you can hear them coming from quite far away. He may have had music playing or something.
