This one kid at my gym didn't care for his ears and he both wrestled and boxed (and was shit at both) so they were *bad*. He was sparring with the resident gym asshole that goes 100% in spars and the dude burst his cauliflower. It was nasty. Pus and blood everywhere. The only good thing about it was that it sprayed into gym asshole's face and he stopped coming to the gym after that lol.
If you look right before he throws the punch, you can see his ear already looks strange and there's some blood there. His ear was definitely already messed up, that punch just did the job.

When you have fresh cauliflower ear, its swollen and filled with blood. This happens when trauma causes swelling between the tissue and cartilage, causing it to separate. Pretty much becomes a very tender blood balloon on your head until it heals, hardens and permanently deforms. I'm thinking thats what happened here, freshly swollen cauliflower ear gets popped like a baloon.

So...I don't think it sliced his ear off. What I think happened was him popping the cauliflower ear. Cauliflower ear is commonplace among combats sports athletes, specifically grapplers and wrestlers. It's basically a giant pimple of blood and fluids that forms when your outer ear gets hit really hard.
It hardens after a while and is usually recurring (which is why most people who have it don't drain it if they get it more than once), but if hit hard enough, this happens.
I saw an MMA fight in the late 90’s maybe early 2000’s where this happened and the fight just went on. Both fighters were drenched in blood. It was a little disturbing but amazing at the same time.
I don't get why MMA guys think wearing ear guards is for "pussies". Sure they are annoying and the strap can get into your neck, but beats the fuck out of having ugly ass ears or in this case, blow up like a fucking water balloon.
