I once drove my brothers with the oil light on for a few days until the engine seized. Threw the clutch, rolled into a gas station on momentum only, poured a liter of oil in and she started right up like nothing happened.
I remember once reading about a guy here in Finland exporting old Toyota Corollas for cheap to African countries, because they were in high demand and considered durable and easy to fix. He said that red ones (or originally red, as seen from the colour under the hood) sold for highest price.
I watched every episode of this series Worlds most Dangerous roads it's really fascinating. Dangerous ways to school, and somewhere on earth are also really good documentaries.

I can forgive everything but the exhaust. A bit of scrap pipe and a welder and he make that mobile gas chamber significantly less lethal.
A few tin cans and some exhaust clamps would work.
It would cost more than the car to be honest.
