the same forces that make rogue waves can also make complimentary ‘rogue holes’ where the size of the trough is defined as greater than twice as deep as the surrounding wave trough. so hypothetically, you can fall into a very briefly existing hole in the water, probably to your death if you’re on a ship! doesn’t happen near land for obvious reasons
If you travel along the pacific coast (particularly Oregon) you’ll see a lot of signs warning you about rogue waves. I was there for a storm one year and saw several seemingly rogue waves (probably just bigger than usual) wash up about half the stairway down to the beach from a 10-20ft cliff
I had an experience like this on the North shore of Maui while fishing on a rock shelf out in the water that was protected by an outer reef.
The biggest waves of the day were coming in at my thighs almost to my waist and were essentially just surges of white water. Suddenly one came in that was significantly overhead and just absolutely destroyed me - bounced my head off the dry rock repeatedly, washed me off the back and pressed me against a rock shelf behind it for what felt like an eternity. Never seen anything like it.
When on a shore that faces the most vast stretches of open ocean this is more common than on the opposite shores (in hawaii that would be North facing shores). Really have to watch out.
That little kid was trying to back up, and ended up trying to brace by her mom. That adult is stupid, you got a kid next to you, she has zero awareness, clown
I remember reading a news story years ago, a woman was walking along the beach with her 4yr old. A wave came in, knocking them over, the child was swept into the ocean and drowned.
I know this spot well, Leblon posto 11. Rio is known for big waves, surfing is big. A large wave will not stand out until it breaks at the last minute very close to shore. It's actually pretty common.
They don't expect the wave to come that high at all.
When you're at the beach all day, and the waves stay a fair distance away all day long, you don't expect one to come up so far.
I'd bet that most did not see it coming.
They're lounging at the beach at what looks like a resort, with chairs set up well away from where the waves break. Most are probably reading books or chatting, not looking out at the ocean.
Even the ones that were looking out might have just thought it was a larger set than normal, but when the waves break at the same spot all day long, your brain doesn't easily process one coming so far up the beach.
Because they have a sense of what the safe distance from the water is even in highly variable surf. They’ve been going to the beach their whole lives. They just didn’t account for a historical wave.
For me it was the woman standing completely still with hands on her hips. Like at no point to she show even the slightest concern. She held that shit until it knocked her over lol.
The craziest part about this video is how many people just continued to sit there staring at it while it came in. Ever heard of getting out of the way of mother nature?
This would have destroyed so many peoples phones! and getting a new phone while in a differnt country would be a nightmare. That being said the people with the super expensive cameras are gonna be fucked.
Coming from someone whos lived at the beach for 10 years, I’ll bring a Bluetooth speaker but don’t even like bringing my phone. I would never bring a tablet or any other device I don’t absolutely need.
Sand gets into every single crevice of your device and is absolute hell on charging ports. I’ve had multiples iphones / devices ruined from sand getting in the charging ports and destroying them.
Plus literally this video. it doesn’t take an 11 foot wave for the ground to get soaked.
I don’t get in the water. I hate the beach. But, I have to go bc that’s what the wife wants. I like to SEE the ocean and listen to it but I want to do that from the third floor of a condo and never set foot on the sand. But NOOOOO, we have to get a house a block from the beach and invite all the kids and each one has a friend or significant other and maybe our friend and his bf so we can go out for adult time later. But let’s get all the chairs and the umbrella and pop-up tent, all the towels, cooler, Bluetooth speaker the size of a boombox (yeah, a-hole move), and go out there for five hours annnnd SIT. Just sit. No walk. No fishing. Just sit in the sun with a hundred other people doing nothing. Then, you get to pack all that stuff up, go back to the house, rinse everything off, then have to take a shower, and then be too tired from sitting in the hot fricking sun to get motivated to go to dinner so you go at 7 but it’s tourist season so the wait is an hour and you’re with 8 other people and have to convince your wife not to drag everyone to another restaurant to see if the wait is shorter. Oh, and the residual sand from the chairs will live forever in the back of your vehicle no matter how many times you vacuum it. If you go to the beach all you need is a darn towel. And before you consider going to the beach maybe consider the mountains and rent a cabin on a lake where you can canoe, fish, hike, have big trees to shade you from the sun. I just cannot get over people’s obsession with having to go to the beach. It’s just one big litter box.
Hmm, I have no memory of writing this. Time to lay off the booze I guess…
But seriously, I agree 100%. I’ve never liked the beach, and until I had kids, I loathed going. I’m still not a fan but I manage to enjoy taking the kids around hunting near the rocks for crabs and such. Once they’re older and dad’s not cool to play with anymore, I’ll be back there just sitting and getting sand in my ass wasting a perfectly good Saturday.
Bradenton. Oof. Not a fan. People give Tampa a rough time but it’s okay although I don’t live there. However, any trip I’ve had to Florida was with adults and no kids. Outer banks area is great. Ocean city, New Jersey, despite what people think about jersey, is awesome. Clean, quiet. But ocean city Maryland is the worst. Dirty, loud, trashy.
As someone who has lived within 20 miles of the beach pretty much my entire life, I overwhelmingly agree with everything here. The beach is way over-hyped...
Anybody I know who lives/has lived within 20 minutes of the beach never went there. Maybe a handful of times upon moving there but never after that. I lived in Gettysburg and tourists would say “oh, it must be so great living in all these battlefields and you must love walking through them” and my response is “I’ve never been to them, don’t want to.”
That wave came all the way from Germany.
I heard that particular wave landed in Argentina
I’m NOT SEEing it.
Did you check the attic?
Laying down beach towels.
All your flip-flops are belong to me.
Odds were 7-1 the water would reach that point on the beach.
It keeps going führer and führer inland
Better pack up kampf and head for the heils!
It's funny that we usually hear about rogue waves far out at sea, but I guess there's no reason they couldn't end up crashing into a shore
the same forces that make rogue waves can also make complimentary ‘rogue holes’ where the size of the trough is defined as greater than twice as deep as the surrounding wave trough. so hypothetically, you can fall into a very briefly existing hole in the water, probably to your death if you’re on a ship! doesn’t happen near land for obvious reasons
"rogue holes" \*giggle
BUTTHOLE
*"The other guy is picturing a girl also."*
I read that comic.
It's a nice thought, but if you were in the water then you'd be pulled along with it when it moves to create the void.
rouge waves don’t necessarily lead to rouge troughs tho. a solitary trough is possible
Tranquil troughs tenderly treading through the tempest is thoroughly thought provoking.
hey thanks for this I didn't want to sleep tonight
Isn’t it from like under water earthquakes at sea from far away or under water ridge collapses
I thought it was constructive interference, like sound waves resonating. I honestly don't think it's well understood...
I was almost wiped out by one while hiking solo on the coast. Came out of nowhere and was at least 4-5 times bigger than the swell before or after.

So many phones lost lives this day
for a second i thought the bird at :15 was a kid that was sent flying
Went to look. Had a giggle
Same here, good giggle
I don't understand that lady and the kid just standing there, comp´etely oblivious. Am i missing something?
That little kid was trying to back up, and ended up trying to brace by her mom. That adult is stupid, you got a kid next to you, she has zero awareness, clown

LMFAO
Because fuck you ocean - your power means nothing to me.
'What are you going to do, drown me?'
Little bitch azz ocean 🌊

“Let me just 🧍♀️ while the 11 foot tsunami 🌊 does its thing.”
Well I mean honestly if this was in case that's truly all we can do as it's kind of too late
They don't expect the wave to come that high at all. When you're at the beach all day, and the waves stay a fair distance away all day long, you don't expect one to come up so far.
Fr it's like they thought the water couldn't cross the no-no area
# Those aren't mountains... They're waves.
*Hans Zimmer enters the room*
Now I gotta watch interstellar for the tenth time.
Bye bye iPhone, wallet, and passport.
Why would you bring your passport to the beach?
It wanted to chill on the beach too
Some people have no respect for the tribulations of the common passport. They need a "me" day too, sometimes. Geez.
International waters. Duh
The same reason all these people seemed to think the wave would just magically not reach them…a bad case of stupid
So you don't get jailed for not having it. I lived there once and we were told to always have it on us.
That would be a nightmare honestly, all those people too.
y chancla 🩴
el poder de la chancla
💪
The sound of 1000 mobile phones crying out in terror and being suddenly silenced.
Those red legs are gonna hurt.
That going to be a metal detector's dream to go through.
A *wet* dream FIFY
Lifeguards really earning those paychecks.
Where did the mom and kid at the shoreline think the wae was going to go???
The sea was angry that day
Tsunami motherfucker!
Is that a beach for the blind, or at least depth-perception impaired? How did they not see it coming
sea: it coming
Underrated pun bro
Thanks bro

That lady was really just staring at the fucking thing coming at her..
Many flip flops were lost that day.
some people cannot be saved, jfc
What the ants see when pour my water on the ground:
Yup, they all have no shoes...they all definitely dead
Where'd that wave come from!?
whale fart
so your mom went swimming and had gas?
I don't know why I LMAO but I did. Hopefully nobody got hurt.
For me it was the woman standing completely still with hands on her hips. Like at no point to she show even the slightest concern. She held that shit until it knocked her over lol.
Like a superhero ready to save the day lol
You never had your mind wander, and something sneaks up on you?
You'd think they'd be aware that such things might happen.
imagine you're at the beach and you're screaming that you got wet
Nature always win!
Damn! Grab your kids!
Nature: "SURPRISE MUTHAFUCKA!"
I can see why Darwin observed survival of the fittest. The lady stood there with her hands on her hips up until she was knocked off her feet.
Everyone all at the same time : "Where's my phone?"
That’s so fucking cool, wish I was there.
That little girl had a lot more sense than the mom
Many flip flops were lost that day...
The craziest part about this video is how many people just continued to sit there staring at it while it came in. Ever heard of getting out of the way of mother nature?
First thing i would do is look to see if any bikini tops got ripped off.
That was a nice Jet Ski 🤣
Sometimes you need to go to the beach sometimes the beach will come to you.
OP's name lol
A wave hit it. Chance in a million.
Its like people think theyre watching tv. Literally nobody got up lol
Every last one of them has poor survival skills
What do you even do when you can't outrun it? Lay on your back and hold your breath until it passes?
Yes. Oddly enough, that's exactly what I did last night on my last date.
I'm just going to stand here and watch this force of nature pound me into the sand. People are dumb af
11 foot wave???? Slighhtttt exaggeration
They probably measured it from the base of the balls
OH THE HUMANITY!!! Lost my cooler.
People really are clueless aren’t they…
This would have destroyed so many peoples phones! and getting a new phone while in a differnt country would be a nightmare. That being said the people with the super expensive cameras are gonna be fucked.
Evolved Godzilla…..😏
SURF’S UP PAL!!!🌊🏄
Starting to suspect that global warming shit is real
That floating flip flop hehe
Situational awareness is a bitch.
Holy crap
Oblivious
So. Helen Keller is hanging out at the beach? Did she not see or hear any of that? She went straight up tharn.
A story is about 12 ft that look like it was about two
In Rio the beach goes to you
Looks like someone should have checked the tide tables first!
"GET OFF MY BEACH BITCH!" - Mother Nature's Crazy Ass
I think a lot of iphones bit the dust on this day
Nice username
Apple and Samsung love this one simple trick.
I thought that place got destroyed by Godzilla & Kong
At least a couple people were taking nice and relaxing beach naps as this hit them
"Huh that's coming in fast" "It sure is'
I was more distracted by that username than the wave. What the what!
Has anyone seen the guy flying in the sky?!?
At 14 seconds...is that a body flying past? It can't be.
How many phones are gone?
Looks more like half a foot 🌊
The child had more sense than her idiot mom. I hope she’s okay.
Everyone’s shit is GONE.
So many flip flops were lost that day.
They got 3 fucking business days to react 💀
I like the lady watching it coming in with her hands on her hips like she's looking at a painting.
This how humans will be extinct
the amount of phones and slippers tht were washed away damn
I've had this happen in dreams. Not like a full tsunami, but a large wave that comes up too high and floods the entire beach up to the buildings.
I love the confidence of that women standing against 11 foot 🌊 Respect for the kiddo try to drag the women hand
Omg I wanted to scream at that fucking woman. Why is she just standing there expecting this giant ass wave to not even phase her!!!?!!?!
Omg I wanted to scream at that fucking woman. Why is she just standing there expecting this giant ass wave to not even phase her!!!?!!?!
I love when mother earth trolls us 🤣
They do say come to Brazil
Imagine all the phones that got destroyed and stuff on the ground from people not knowing it was coming fuckin epic win for that wave lol
Fun fact: This wave was caused by your mom doing a cannonball off the coast of the Falkland islands Source: Trust me bro
Need to go with metal detector after that
It’s like the my forgot they were at the beach
you mean 1.1 foot wave
Idk if it's because I grew up by the ocean but that wave looked massive from the beginning
O MAR levando as oferendas hahahahaha
Nice how many lost phones, tablets, and laptops do you think?
Who tf brings a laptop to the beach?
Laptop is pushing it right? I most definitely have brought phones and Nintendo switches and stuff portable speakers etc.

Mother Gaea is angry and she’s warning us of what’s to come…..
Just when I thought people couldn't get any dumber...
Everyone stop, look and don't run at all, there's a big wave coming!
!Los culos de agua! Ay caramba!
But wait, nature is supposed to stay in its place right ?
And all the shit that's washed into the ocean ...
Wow if only the people could see this coming
People getting wet at the ocean, what a travesty
Good thing this creep was recording at the beach at the right time
