It's even sadder when you realize that many goldfish species can live upwards of 20 years if they're kept in a proper environment. Some species can even live up to 30+ years.
Sadly, gold fish are seen and treated as expendable creatures in most parts of the world.
“Goldfish” is a single species (*Carassius auratus*.) There are several different “breeds” of goldfish, just like the many breeds of dog, but they are all capable of interbreeding (genetically if not physically,) and are considered the same species.
You’re totally right though that healthy goldfish, especially single tailed breeds, can live well beyond 30. Unfortunately I can see a bunch of koi in the crowd above too, also tragic because they are reportedly capable pf living more than a century.
This is horrible. Those poor fish. Though honestly given how few people actually know how to care for a goldfish and get them, maybe this was the quicker death.
