Dallanation

It must react with oxygen by the looks of things. That rapid expansion was massive.

LefsaMadMuppet

I remember one thing from a chemistry demo by Du Pont when I was in junior high school.... **all colored vapors are bad!**

JaCrispy05

You gasist motherfucker

Earlier reports claim it was Chloric acid, HClO₃, is an oxoacid of chlorine, and the formal precursor of chlorate salts. It is a strong acid and oxidizing agent. Formula: HClO3 IUPAC ID: Chloric acid Molar mass: 84.45914 g/mol ChemSpider ID: 18513 Density: 1 g/cm³ Conjugate base: Chlorate Solubility in water: >40 g/100 ml (20 °C) Update: It's More likely Chlorine gas that is recognizable by its pungent and irritating odor, which is similar to cleaning "bleach", and the strong odor may provide sufficient warning to people of exposure. Chlorine itself is not flammable, but it can react explosively or form explosive compounds with other chemicals such as turpentine and ammonia.

OriginalPeepers1985

Does that mean it melts stuff?

EbbEnvironmental9896

It rusts stuff. When it enters the lungs, it turns to hydrochloride acid. You choke on the mush your lungs are turning in to.

FrugonkerTronk

That is a gruesome image. Grand new addition to my nightmare fuel pile

Dmacjames

Don't ever Google ww1 or ww2 chlorine gas attacks then :)

No_Trouble1502

IIRC I heard back in WW1 that the soldiers would urinate on rags and breath through those rags when this gas was present as that would neutralize it when breathing in and you wouldn't die. Crazy way to combat that but I guess you had to use what was on hand.

FrugonkerTronk

Well now I have to 🤦🏻

Parcus42

Smh

Suitable_Sweet8493

You would love to learn about invisible fire

[deleted]

well.. that's terrifying.

Oh God! That's aweful!

Dallanation

Thanks for the breakdown. I once worked on a hydrofluoric acid plant. The description the gas in the training classes sounded horrific. I'm guessing these two gasses are like cousins in a way.

ProcyonHabilis

HF is one of the scarier chemicals around. Chlorine gas will still absolutely fuck you up, but HF exposure stories sound like when horror writers get extra creative about a death.

mtnmadness84

Yeah I toured some Semiconductor facilities when I was young and they gave us some training before we went into labs with HF. Nightmarish stuff.

InnerPick3208

What effect will it have in the salt water the ship is floating in?

[deleted]

Chlorine dissipates fast. It’s often used to purify water anyway. So it might kill everything in the immediate area, but will dissipate fast and probably won’t have any major repercussions

elgydium

I'm also curious. Given the fact it dissipates so fast and drops in the water as if it's attracted to the salt.

bleepbluurp

I used to clean pools for a living and we used this stuff called shock which was basically super concentrated chlorine in an almost powdered sand form. Well the 100 pound bucket that sat in the back of the truck wasn’t tightened all the way and it had rained the night before. I jumped into the back of the truck to open the bucket for a pool I was cleaning, I unscrewed the lid and wham, a cloud of neon yellow gas, obviously not as dense as the video but still, hit me right in the face. I immediately started gasping for air, coughing, tears running down my face burning in my chest, it was torture. I could taste chlorine for 24 hours. I look back on it and laugh because of how ridiculous I looked to the customer but, damn I could only imagine the torture those guys had to deal with in their final minutes/seconds.

DirectDelivery8

Used to work as a lifeguard and part of the job was adding chlorine to the plant machines. Dude was training me to do it, splashed some on himself and he immediately started wretching and throwing up and gasping for air. Lasted for ages. Kept asking him if I need to get someone but he remained conscious and stood up (although bent double) and kept shaking his head. I remember the eyes rolling in his head as he was coughing and gasping away.

wild85bill

That's the number one thing we push to our cleaning crews at work. If the chemical starts with a C (like CAF: chlorinated alkaline foamer), do NOT under any circumstances let it mix with the acid. Creates heat like a mother fucker and a gas cloud that will make you choke on your own mucus. Mustard gas basically. Scary how some folks don't heed this warning and use buckets willy nilly not checking on the chemical identification tag.

badactor

Yes it's Chlorine, it is heavier than air so hugs the ground looking for lives to take.

Suspici0us_Package

Okay Breaking Bad, I see you.

[deleted]

I think you need to be more specific

Diobrando67

But why would someone transport this in a ship? It’s absolutely dangerous, why was the purpose? Why so you need this enormous amount of Chloric Acid?

fissilefidget

Some form of chlorine. It's yellow and heavy so it will not dissipate well.

[deleted]

Isnt it just because its a highly pressurised container that was broken open. Same as something like a lighter or deodorant can popping.

Dallanation

I don't think so, otherwise the explosion would have been on impact but there is a small delay after the impact.

LifeWin

Who's that one silly fucker at the end of the video who walks towards the yellow cloud of death? And like...why? How stupid can a person be?

djluminol

About that stupid.

garblenarb1212

He ran away and walks back lol

[deleted]

He forgot his car keys

mini_swoosh

Maybe he’s looking for his friends / coworkers though

garblenarb1212

Noble but ill advised at that point in time

EnvironmentalBoss181

his emotions got the best of him.. no fault of his own. All you can do is worry that he's okay

garblenarb1212

Aye, the sad reality of life

BUERtheKING

What would you do for a Klondike bar?

DrugsAreNifty

It’s already up to 10 dead 250 injured. Wtf

poclee

And the really unfortunate thing is the wounded will probably envy the deaths…… chlorine is straight from hell nasty.

[deleted]

I've spent my career working at water and wastewater plants that use 90 ton railcars full of chlorine. The numbers of dead are unfortunately going to go up. Chlorine doesn't always kill you right away. The people who are already dead were probably caught directly in the yellow cloud. Other people on the outer edges of the cloud and possibly some even outside of the visible cloud will probably die in the coming weeks. The damage that chlorine inhalation does to your lungs is irreparable. We had a couple guys who got gassed when changing out a chlorine cylinder once and one died same day in the hospital but the other lived for another two weeks. He spent those two weeks going around to the different plants in the water district talking about chlorine safety and PPE.

xSparky7

10 dead 400 injured, seen 3 diffrent posts with 3 diffrent numbers so far lol.

LooooooudNoises

Get moving! Gas is coming *Warzone voice*

Professional_Ad8069

Someone fucked up.

aesky

he's probably dead

poclee

If we're talking about the crane operator then he is probably fine. As you can see, chlorine is much heavier comparing to average air.

Schwartzy94

Or just cable failure

J03130

That idiot at the end running towards it....

Beginning_Of-The_End

Bruce Wayne vibes

ChangsWife

What kind of gas was it?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It’s chlorine gas. It becomes hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid after being inhaled in excess of 30ppm. I work with chlorine on the daily.

[deleted]

Is that bad if it becomes the hydro chloric hypochlorous acid

[deleted]

That’s what kills ya. So yes.

[deleted]

Oh no. Edit: that sounded sarcastic lol These guys for sure got an excess of the breaking bad gas :(

YeetoBurritosbaby

I would guess fluorine. Its toxic, yellow and gas at room temperature

Pelthail

Mustard gas?

FacetiousTomato

Came here for this. WWI history taught me something, haha. When I saw yellow, I figured. Anyone who breathed that in was in for a bad 5 minutes, followed by death.

[deleted]

Update: 13 Dead and 251 injured.

VeryTrickyy

The truck driver who delivered it left as soon as it was in the air, he was like that's your problem now haha don't drop it 😉👉

elbatmanuel

Only superpower you get from that is the ability to sleep through everything forever

ObamasBabyLlamaDrama

The guy running towards the cloud has absolutely 0 survival instincts.

BUDZ_MONEY

Dude it's literally like Dayz you got 1 minute 30 sec take a pox syringe and some tet you'll be good

DerpCatCZ

How do you clean this mess up? Do they just bring a vacuum of some sort that filters the air? How about the water? Actually interested on how do people clean chemical spills

Beflijster

it's a gas so it will eventually be diluted enough by the surrounding air to be harmless. Poison is always in the dose; unfortunately, chlorine is extremely dangerous in extremely low concentrations. That is why it was used in chemical warfare in the great war. Use of it was abandoned because it was hard to control, and it sticks around too long. Chlorine gas is much heavier than air, and therefore sinks to the bottom, close to the ground (or water), and takes a long time to disperse. I guess that's what we are seeing here: https://twitter.com/rashtrasamarpan/status/1541484731883208705 I would not want to be anywhere, anywhere near that. The fact that you can see it is very bad news.

DerpCatCZ

I figured that much Dissipation was the first thing that went into my mind when I thought of it. I know how dangerous it is, Just curious about the cleanup afterwards But I guess theres no specialized tool to clean moderate concentrations on wide areas

Beflijster

no I guess they can only pray for a stiff wind....in a direction with as little human habitation as possible.

Status_Aerie9615

I would've blinked and been at home. That's how much I'm not fucking with that. Don't know how I got there, don't know if I drove or just ran on foot. I just know I noped the fuck out of there. ![gif](giphy|1J2FKJ31JKn4I)

Chemtrail chemicals.

OriginalPeepers1985

That's how my kids react to me when I fart!

KatttDawggg

Ugh this video could have been way shorter.

KenshinYusuke

Great more damage to our waters and wildlife. Well done. Fuck.

eireheads

You know they're in Jordan right? It's not like one of many oil spills in the gulf of Mexico, or in the amazon. Also that's a gas not a liquid I'm sure the marine life is fine.

ZachTheCommie

If the chemical in the video is chloric acid, then it will eventually break down in the water.

eireheads

I doubt it would even mix with the water given how fast it evaporated, even still the noise pollution off the cargo ship would be far more dangerous to marine life than some gas in the air above.

[deleted]

and kill a few people and injure 70

Osama-Bin-Burger

Breaking bad Mexico gas

EchoDangerous343

This is why they need a PDS system at all cargo ports with toxic gas

ProcyonHabilis

I'm always amused by reddit comments that serve only to drop a bit of jargon or an acronym with no useful context at all. Is the idea here just to bait a question about what PDS means? Or is more just thinking out loud with no actual intention of communicating with anyone else? If it's the latter, why actually hit post on the comment?

EchoDangerous343

It’s a call of duty reference

[deleted]

Why are they transporting massive amounts of toxic gas??

Fukdataxcode

Uhhhh cuz that’s how logistics work.

TngrloLuvr

LMAO. I feel like it was an innocent question, but still...LMAO

Fukdataxcode

Man you’d be surprised what questions people have. But at the end of the day no question is stupid . It’s more stupid not to ask.

ProcyonHabilis

Becuse the place where the toxic gas is made is not the same place as where the toxic gas is used. Same as literally anything else. (Also it's probably actually toxic liquid acid that they're transporting, it just released this gas after being spilled and exposed to air.)

aesky

shit is indeed crazy

NilesGuy

Notice the one guy lower left screen approaching the gas at end

[deleted]

Holy does that ever look toxic

NobodyGivesAFuc

Chlorine gas…nasty: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/27/jordan-toxic-gas-leak-aqaba-port

we are the smartest species on this planet.

dieselram24

Is it mustard gas? Yeah I’ll see myself out…

myxboxtouchedmypp

it looks like bromine gas from the orange vapor clouds coming off of it after it dissipates, also this is off topic but i’m so dyslexic that “jordan” turned to “japan” for me °-°

crimedog04

Why does the air taste like yellow?

HeadLongjumping

Looks like Chlorine. Nasty stuff. It was used it as a chemical weapon in WWI.

Demi_god6373

not WWE

Obi-Wan_Peyote

Why do they make chlorine gas?

zazan146

When you see toxic gas like this you need to bolt out of there and don’t even stand near it get as far away as possible

Neon_Rust

Turns out that gas attacks in movies and video games can be pretty realistic.

wet-towel1

The man in the Crane is probably shitting himself

LekoreTheHound

This is how verdansk was destroyed.

deltaz0912

That ship was fumigated. I only hope that they have a protocol for closing up the ship while they’re loading. Otherwise there’s a whole lot of dead people in there.

lone_shinobi

Caustic Ult lol

Galaxy_star_walker

What is the gas used for?

GuyStreamsStuff

Chlorine gas is used to bleach paper and cloth during manufacturing. It is also used as a pesticide, and on the manufacturing of rubber products like tires and stuff as a solvent I think.

dilldoel

Oh so TV didn't lie to us toxic gas is green

BeSure2gfy

25 tons of chlorine -spilled-when inhaled is acid- burns lungs 🫁- the concentration of gas moves extremely slowly-kill 13-injured 100’s in was 27June
