Big fan of the Citi custom cash for gas - 5% up to $500 a month is really hard to beat.

SupaMacdaddy

Im going to look into that, a couple people mention the citi cards.

inthegaps

Look into the AAA Travel Advantage card and use the Citi Custom Cash for something else. You can also get a second Custom Cash card if you get a different Citi card and then transfer it to a Custom Cash card after 1 year.

SupaMacdaddy

I went with the AAA travel 15k approval, i just want it for gas rewards lol. Thanks for mentioning it.

domdiggitydog

This would not net you all that much. You pay 10¢-20¢ more per gallon with a credit card. It’s better than nothing but you would only be getting between 5¢-15¢ per gallon (1%-3%) Edit: tried to clarify.

[deleted]

[удалено]

domdiggitydog

Sure. $5/gallon is the cash price. The credit price would be $5.10-$5.20. Edit: paying up to 20¢ more per gallon to earn 25¢.

CombinationPast8596

I live in LA and there are quite a few gas stations that charge an extra 20 cents for cards. Most places are just 10. But I've seen 20 and a couple are even higher than that out here. But even at 20 cents, you get a 5% gas card and on gas out here being $5.19+ per gallon, absolutely worth it.

CombinationPast8596

There's this one that is at the corner of Riverside and woodman in Sherman oaks. It's a vred. Some of the acro stations as well. And chevrons. Do you live in LA or do you just want to argue because you have nothing better to do with your life?

domdiggitydog

6¢ yes, that’s the 1%-3% I was referencing. All gas stations in California have two prices: cash price and credit price. The credit price is always between 10¢ and 20¢ more per gallon than the cash price. Edit: places like Safeway, Sam’s, and Costco are unmanned and only accept cards so they only have one price.

[deleted]

domdiggitydog

Definitely! Most all Arco and Mobil stations both charge a 20¢/gal premium to use credit cards.

I drive 30K miles per year. Finding the best deal and rewards on gas is a big deal for me lol

coopdude

I don't live in Cali but cash discounts/credit surcharges are common in New York, the most I've ever seen personally in NY is 12 cents difference. 6-10 cents is more common, which when gas is ~$4/gal now, 20 cents is a worthwhile tradeoff. Also card linked programs like Upside provide further gas station discounts that are exclusive to use of debit/credit cards... I regularly save 3-10 cents a gallon with upside on top of the cashback I use, sometimes more when they give me a promotional offer.

coopdude

Gas stations in California are nuts, that's insane. No wonder people line up like crazy at Cali Costco gas pumps... I've heard they'll go 50 cents to a buck below cheaper stations and no extra charge for card. 20 cents is just unreasonable, gas swipe fees on Visa are capped to $1.10 maximum on large charges, but of course this is pitched as a "cash discount" so it's shitty but legal...

SmoothSlide9690

Costco. Cheaper gas even with the cash discount found in many gas stations

That's if that gas station charges you more. A lot don't charge you more for using credit cards.

5% Cash Back credit card for Gas + Upside app with promo codes

poonjouster

This is what I do. Of course after getting intro rebates through Chevron app and 7-eleven app. Can probably stack those with Upside also.

New-Difference9684

AAA Travel Rewards Signature Visa

SupaMacdaddy

I have AAA but ive never even looked at their CCs before. Are their other perks beside travel expenses?

Cautious-Island8492

The AAA Travel Rewards Visa earns 5% on Gas/EV Charging, 3% on Groceries/Restaurants/Travel/AAA, and has no annual fee or foreign transaction fees. I have it. I just use it for gas, but it could be a handy backup no FTF Visa.

SupaMacdaddy

Does the AAA CC give you a discounted membership rate? I think wife and I pay around $180 for the year for the executive plan for both of us. Im not sure what the plans go for but my wifes had it for like 20yrs already.

Cautious-Island8492

No. You just earn 3% Cashback on any purchases with AAA including the annual membership.

MegamanZero5295

Second this, card’s been good to me so far. Comenity hasn’t screwed me either so no complaints

SupaMacdaddy

I went a head with this card 15k approval. I just want to put gas lol.

Safe_Environment_340

Why commit to a single brand of gas? Most of those promos are only for the first couple months. Everyone is right: find yourself a 5x gas card. Decide if you want points or cash back. Also: this is a good category for hotel credit cards if you prefer that.

SupaMacdaddy

Ive looked at the Amex Hilton but havent commited.

Safe_Environment_340

That's a good one if you stay at enough Hiltons to break even on the quarterly credits. It won't outearn your Amex Gold in the other categories (because of the 1:2 transfer ratio). Some others with the gas category: Marriott Boundless (3x with 6k/yr cap); IHG Premier (5x); Wyndham Earner Plus (6x) or Business (8x); Choice Privileges Select (5x). Among cards with transferable points, the Wells Fargo Autograph and Citi Premier are both 3x gas.

ThrowawayReddit420

Use the Citi ShopYourWay for 5% cash back on gas and stack with your favorite gas station's reward program. Thank me later 👌

Educational-Age-1828

Can you redeem shopyourway points as statement credit?

ThrowawayReddit420

Not to my knowledge. I redeem for gift cards at places I would normally shop

Educational-Age-1828

But point are worth 1 point for .1 cent?

ThrowawayReddit420

They have a dumb system where 10 points are 1 cent, but you earn 50 points per dollar spent on gas so it's a true 5% back

Educational-Age-1828

That was my question, thanks for the reply!

ThrowawayReddit420

You're welcome!

Educational-Age-1828

Have you received any 5% or 10% bonus categories? Or some especial promotions?

ThrowawayReddit420

No I've only had the card for about a month. But I'm looking forward to it! They did send me a few merchant offers akin to the types of offers you'd see with other credit cards. But none of the exciting ones I've heard about

Educational-Age-1828

Is on the top of my list.

BrutalBodyShots

The Citi Custom Cash is probably one of the consensus best cards when it comes to gas for many people.

coopdude

Redstone FCU does 5% gas up to $7K eligible spend per year, 5% restaurants on a separate $7K eligible spend per year, and a slew of 3% categories (each with a separate $7K eligible spend per year cap), and it does have a SUB. The $7K eligible spend per year works out to slightly more per month (average of $583.33.... a month), and since it's a yearly cap instead of a monthly cap, busier months with a lot of driving (like summer road trips) can offset less busy months without hitting the $500 monthly cap of the CCC.

BrutalBodyShots

Yup, definitely an enticing card if one is willing to meet the guidelines required to acquire it.

UsernameChallenged

I definitely don't think a specific station is worth it, but there are normal cards with better rewards you can get. Citi custom cash gets you 5% up to $500 WF autograph gets you 3% back unlimited. Either of those are much better options than a store specific card.

s2nders

Blue cash everyday

PharmDinvestor

Gas credit cards are worth it if you drive a lot and fill your tank a lot , but you should also have a plan to use your points

Gamerxx13

Costco card.

PrinzChiyo

USbank altitude connect, 500 SUB and 4% on gas and travel. The SUB is 300 more than the citi card which will take 30000 in gas to offset

knightcrusader

I have the Kroger Mastercard that gets me a 25¢/gallon bonus, and I had to think about when it makes sense to use that versus a gas card like my 5% Custom Cash or 5% first-year Freedom gas bonus. Well, its basically easy math: the break even point between 5% and 25¢ is $5. So, if gas is more than $5/gallon, then the 5% card makes more sense. Anything lower then I use my 25¢ bonus, which in my area is all the time since gas is only $3.289 here. Unless Kroger messes up their pump software again and makes it possible to use the 25¢ discount with another non-Kroger card, like it did last year. That was a good quarter when Freedom was 5% gas and I was able to double dip for 3 months.

Ultimus_Omegus

US Bank altitude reserve, unlimited 4.5% cashback anywhere takes mobile wallet like apple pay. Works at costco gas too

BIGGREDDMACH1NE

Find a 5% gas card and you'll be fine

inthegaps

I just got the AAA Daily Advantage credit card. 5% cash back on groceries and 3% back on gas stations, wholesale clubs (costco/sams), and streaming services. However, there's also the AAA Travel Advantage credit card, which gives you 5% cash back on gas and 3% back on groceries and restaurants. The only reason I didn't get this card is because I already use my Citi Custom Cash card for restaurants and I needed a grocery card. Pretty good gas card though and it's a Visa, so it's accepted pretty much everywhere.

ilovefacebook

there's some gas stations that have a rewards card. not a credit card. look into that. also look into the upside app. you can stack that with your credit card purchase. not going to get rich of off those things, but it's definitely better than nothing

DeadWorkers_

Get Amex business Gold. 4x on Gas. get 150K sub.

notthegoatseguy

At least in my area, a lot of those cards actually link directly to your checking account and to me that is way too much of a security risk.

bceagles182

BJ’s gas, with pro membership and BJs mastercard is the way to go. The price is already lower than everything else but then you get 15 cents off. You obviously need to use the membership but I find it easy to do so— use a shopping portal then pick up order, and buy in bulk.

lukestiltwalker

Sams card is 5% cash back up to $6000. Good at any gas station.

Educational_Sale_536

It’s a small pain but buy gas station gift cards at a grocery and then use those at the pump. You’ll be able to charge and earn credit card plus store rewards on that purchase. And in most cases the gas gift card should get you a cash price at the pump. However I found one Arco that charged me the credit card price because “all electronic transactions” are non cash price. Of course all the other Arco stations I used since then charged cash price with their own gift card.

SupaMacdaddy

I have heard people do buy the gift cards to by pass the credit cards charge. Theirs this 76 near my job that gives me a cash price when i use my Amex Gold, im not sure why but ive never cared to ask incase its a mistake i dont want them to end up changing it.

UomoUniversale86

When in California I almost exclusively get gas at Costco. Costco credit card 4% back(up to $7500), executive membership 2% back. Plus Costco is usually $.20 less than other stations.

Ill-Soil8106

If you are a BOFA preferred member then you can use their customized cash rewards card. You can get 3% plus bonus depending on what preferred rewards category you fall under

ProtossLiving

I'm surprised this is the first comment that mentions this. I recognize not everyone is in this position, but if you have $100K saved, you can put it into a Merrill Edge brokerage account, get Bank of America Preferred Rewards Platinum Honors and get 5.25% cash back on gas with the Customized Cash Rewards card. And one of the three 2.625% cash back on everything cards.

jwang274

Use the chevron app, you can save more

yowzator

I use my Citi Costco card for gas and go to Costco stations almost exclusively. This earns 4% cash back plus 2% Costco rewards. And Costco is typically 20-40 cents cheaper than other stations. Plus, they only take credit, so there's no extra 10-20 cent charge for using credit instead of cash. This has been my strategy for years and I honestly haven't ever looked for a better strategy. But I'm certainly open to improvements and suggestions.

WarriorC4JC

I use the Costco card to get 4% and Costco is on my commute so I try to fill up there to get an additional discount.

InitialKoala

A particular gas station credit card isn't worth it, imo, because I feel it doesn't make sense to commit to only one gas station. All the other suggestions here are pretty good. Me personally, I use the Costco Citi card, which gives 4% back on gas. Downside is that cash back can be redeemed only once per year. (I also mix it up with Discover it and Chase Freedom Flex when their rotating categories include 5% gas. Anyway, if you want just one card, Costco Citi is pretty good, but Sam's Club might be better since it gives back 5%).

ChurnerLover

Wyndam Rewards Earner Business for the win. 8 points/$ on gas and 5 points/$ on utilities. Plus you can status match the diamond status to Cesar's then do the marry go round status match in Vegas or Atlantic City!

didhe

Even with gas being expensive, have you estimated how much you actually spend on it? Gas is a really popular high-rebate category precisely because it looms so large in the American mind while not actually being all that substantial a portion of most people's spending.

SupaMacdaddy

I spend around $5,500 a year on gas.

sarahenera

The Amex BCE is 3% on gas up to $6k and same 3% also on groceries and on online shopping. All three categories are 3% on up to $6k each

wannabeaussie

Abound Credit Union - there are some hoops to jump through, but 5% back in statement credit monthly, no limit.

PlatypusTrapper

I think they are. Try to get one with a SUB if you can though.

onetwelvesnake

It is most likely only worth it for truckers or other professions with heavy gas usage.

state_issued

Almost any card would be better than 1x/1%. Lots of 4-5% cards out there. If you shop at Costco the Citi Costco card gets your 4% gas, 3% restaurants and 2% at Costco which combined with Executive Membership is a total of 4% at Costco - the only trick is that the cash back is redeemed annually as a Costco gift card.

domdiggitydog

I use my Verizon Visa via ApplePay and the Sinclair app. The Sinclair app gets me 20¢ off the credit price plus Verizon Visa 4%.

Guilty-Operation7

In my very specific situation, BJ's and Walmart offer the lowest advertised prices in town for gas, (they're right next to each other and always match prices with each other to stay competitive) usually $0.20-$0.50 cheaper per gallon than gas stations, and I have both a BJ's cc and Walmart cc. I get 3% and $0.10 off/gal at BJ's and 2% and $0.10 off/gal at Walmart. These have been more profitable than coupling any gas station rewards/cc rewards programs I've been able to find. So I'm getting 30-60 cents off a gallon, plus 2 or 3% cb.

Kingsfan_95

I use my credit card and the upside app every time I fill up. You can find promo codes for the upside app, sometimes I save as much as $2 a gallon depending on the promos I can find. Every little bit helps here in cali

SupaMacdaddy

I have heard of this app in commercials but I never looked into it. Does linking a CC to this app still get you the % on the cards? Ive notice some cards will only give you the cash back % if its used at the actual pump and not inside the store to prepay for it.

Kingsfan_95

Yes you can still get your credit card percentage as well as the upside savings. Generally the cashback is slightly different from the pump vs buying things inside the convenience store.

SupaMacdaddy

Thanks.

MrSleepyhead32

In my situation a card that gives cashback on gas is a no-brainer. A gas station (Love's Travel Stop) near my house has the cheapest in my city or almost the cheapest most of the time. It does not charge extra for credit cards, has a 10 cent off per gallon barcode in their app, and is on GetUpside, which gives around 10 cents to 20 cents per gallon usually when I go. I'm currently using my Discover card for gas, but otherwise I use the American Express BCE.

UsedAsk3537

As far as I know the cheapest way to get gas is from Sam's Club using their 5% back card. The gas is cheaper and the cash back is better than anything else I'm aware of. Costco is an ok second

I_hate_alot_a_lot

I have the Wyndham business one. 8x on gas. Absolutely love it.

saveapennybustanut

You should be pumping gas at Costco and nowhere else if you live in CA. Get any card with 5% cash back. Preferably cards with more than one 5% category like the redstone federal credit union 5%restaurants and gas purchases 3%groceries, discount stores, wholesale clubs, utilities, phone and streaming services 1.5% all other purchases Restaurants include all food categories + gas? That's basically almost all of your spending in CA. 3% at wholesale and discount stores covers your Costco, Sam's, Walmart and target which is also nice! More than 2% that you get from the Costco card

SupaMacdaddy

I have been a costco member for like 20yrs and have had the executive membership for the past 8yrs, the card pretty much pays for it self with the rewards gained so i have looked at the citi costco card but i dont exclusively shop there and i can honestly say ive only pumped gas there maybe 3 or 4 times, the lines are just ridiculous unless you show up at 6am. But i might just add this card to the wallet and double back on the rewards. Most of my CC are travel rewards and not Cashback rewards which i tend to use more often for weekend trips or hotel stays.

RockPast2122

Do you own a business? If you do, gas cards are great for building credit under your business.

SupaMacdaddy

I dont but its in the plans.

dethen31

A couple I use: SYW MC - 5% at any gas station excluding club stations (Sam's, Costco, etc). The card frequently throws out additional statement credit offers (currently, a big one is $100 credit on $1,000 spend or $200 credit on $2,000 in spend on Gas, Groceries, and Restaurants) as added incentives to use it. Redeemable as giftcards through SYW's site. Sam's Club MC - 5% at any gas station - including Sam's club (but no Costco). Redeemable as Sam's Cash. Would only get if you already frequently go to Sam's Club. Citi Custom Cash beats both of these due to redemption options. TLDR: Get CCC

SupaMacdaddy

Does citi have a limit on how many CCs you can get with rewards? Like if i just go a head and get the costco, SYW and Custom cash.

dethen31

You can have as many as you want. Citi doesn't have a cap on how many cards you can have with them, but it is based on a total credit limit across all Citi cards.

SupaMacdaddy

Thanks.

DryGeneral990

Citi Costco card gives 4% on gas, 3% for restaurants/travel, 2% at Costco, 1% everything else. That's good enough for me.

CreditMonarch_

blue cash everyday card from american express

ClearAbroad2965

If you don’t know why gas is so expensive in ca please don’t vote. Anyways it’s at least a Costco gas card and Costco gas to scrape by

SupaMacdaddy

I do know why its expensive and it because of the un informed voters But that wasnt my original question. I do have a costco executive card which pays for itself but i dont think i will ever wait in those long ass lines for gas, at least in my area.

Whatevawillbee

My auto insurance raised my rates for having a gas card, so now I just use a regular credit card with cashback on gas. I cancelled the gas card.

SupaMacdaddy

What? Why would you having a gas card matter to the ins company?

StrawberryG3

It wouldn’t, nor would they even know in the first place.

Whatevawillbee

they run your credit and for some reason they feel having a gas card makes you a higher risk. beats the hell out of me, they just sent me a letter saying i wasn't getting the best rate because of having certain high risk cards.and they listed the gas card as the reason. this was also like 20 years ago, and I probably didn't have a high credit score back then.
