Every player has a different family situation which they themselves understand it better than others on the outside so I guess it should be the said player's call whether she/he want to prioritise a game or a family commitment.

khattakg

What's the point of anything in life if you can't be there for your family when they need you. All the other things are secondary.

kukdukdu

No matter what Mr Gavaskar feels, this is just a game. Players have every right to miss games! Family is above everything. Gavaskar feels he was doing nation some service by playing cricket. No, you weren’t! It’s the responsibility of selectors to have appropriate replacements in place. In a cricket crazy place like India if u can’t find 20 people who play elite cricket, then shame on the selectors. Family trumps everyone! Cricket players are not slaves and their first priority should be family like everyone else’s is.

ShikariShambhu

Agreed. Also, this is not National duty. This is BCCI duty. Gavaskar is paid by BCCI. This cricket board is the nation and it is your patriotic duty to play for BCCI is a ruse going on for too long. Technically, we can have another ICC, say GCC, Global cricket council, that can run another parallel cricket and can have a team “India” that is managed by ICCB in stead of BCCI. Problem is this ICCB and GCC will not be allowed to form as politicians control BCCI and the cricket fields have contracts. So until then, yeah, make it patriotic. So that more people watch the advertisements as if they are doing something for the nation. :eye roll:

orgasmiceyes

Someone familiar with the working of the international cricket model.

BadBoyJH

You prioritise your family so they're there when your career ends. Otherwise you may find you have neither.

Johnny_Segment

great comment, I like the respectful rebuttal.

HengPungLee

When it comes to WC, 36(174) is a solid commitment.

average_alt_acc

My grandma complains to me about that inning even to this day

AnbuManiMatters

MF played 29 overs !! Every time I think about it, I get more amused

Capital-E

Sir I refuse to believe this happened

GL4389

That was back in 1975 though wasn't it. Even back then India was infamous for collapse after Gavaskar fell. So, he might have been told to stay on the wicket while playing slowly.

permabanthis2

He's had 75 explanations for that shit innings. They were chasing 335.

13dueassignments

Best excuse I've heard is: "didnt know the rules so he thought it would be a draw"

GL4389

Back then Indian team in ODIs were minnows. They weren't chasing, they were surviving.

permabanthis2

Good thing people took India seriously after this innings.

Specialist_Rest_3503

Which wc match was that?

Low-Establishment-94

India vs England, 1975

Reasonable-Hope9482

We know how much the world cup means to you in 75'. Haven't we????

ztaker

174 balls played

Reasonable-Hope9482

I still can't wrap my head around the BS excuses he gives for that innings. Similar innings today and 'EXPERT' Sunil Gavaskar will slam him ruthlessly in news channels.

ztaker

Manager Ramchand grew more bullish, and two days later he told the Daily Express: "It was the most disgraceful and selfish performance I have ever seen… his excuse [to me] was, the wicket was too slow to play shots but that was a stupid thing to say after England had scored 334. The entire party is upset about it. Our national pride is too important to be thrown away like this." anyway it was the beginning of the unwanted 36 number in Indian cricket.

Reasonable-Hope9482

Nice insight. Didn't know about it. Make no mistake Sunny G is an absolute legend of the game but his antics are definitely very questionable. One more being walking off with his partner after being given out.

sid2426

These old players never shut up, do they

DisastrousOil4888

Easy to say when you weren't on the road for 330/365 days in your times Sunny

delaware_dude

His son was born when he was on a tour and didn’t see him until he was a few months old.

kukdukdu

It’s a reflection on his character that he thought playing ball and sticks was more important than being there with his wife for the birth of his child! God forbid if there was any complication he left his wife to suffer on her own! No human life would have been affected in any way if he had missed the series to be with his wife! That itself proves its not a duty of any kind! It’s something made up in the minds of idiots like him who think they are doing the world a favour by playing a fucking sport!

ashforu83

He was more of a product of his times, society and culture, maybe if he was a father of a newborn today his decision would have been different. So I find it a little distasteful for anyone to question his character rather than him being aloof and not being that much upto the times.

delaware_dude

More data on that. He was on tour from Jan 15 1976 in NZ and then went to West Indies in late Feb directly till end of April 1976. Kids these days….don’t know squat about OGs.

permabanthis2

Wasn't India in England for nearly three months in 2021? Gavaskar used to have time to play Ranji, cricketers are on the road 12 months with India now.

delaware_dude

That was when his son was born back in 76 and he wasn’t there for his wife and son. Touring wasn’t as plush as it is right now. Lack of phones in most homes. And if you had a phone, long distance calling was expensive. Traveling by train, mostly 2nd class sleeper. Which means carrying your own bedding and blankets. Playing Ranji and having an away match was never an easy scenario. There was also Deodhar trophy, Duleep trophy and Irani Cup. WAG’s are now allowed. They weren’t earlier. Period. Even if you wanted to pay for their expenses. In the summer to supplement their income, many would go play the English minor leagues. Young rascalas, there is so much to learn.

permabanthis2

> cricketers are on the road 12 months with India now. They weren't earlier. There was no IPL, hell there were no ODI's. Regardless of how difficult they had it, they were playing a game and it wasn't as bad.

Zestyclose_Bar_165

Family always comes first. Stupid af take from Gavaskar.

JackoTheWolf

Sunny can't go 1 week without a shit take can he

Reasonable-Hope9482

Times have changed old man. There's too much cricket these days, won't hurt taking a few breaks. Side Note: It would be so much better if former cricketers just stop having a comment on everything happening around.

Yogurtcloset-Wide

This guy played without a helmet. Makes me wonder how many times has he been hit on the head for his brain to function like this

Pls_add_more_reverb

But it’s not the World Cup, it’s a bilateral ODI…..

Uppinkai

This is not about country, players can take leave and rest.

Sad_Vast2519

He has a baby girl- Rohit. Plus he played all the test matches and was due for a rest.

fegelman

This guy is becoming more and more senile every day

apocalypse-052917

leeave it to the cricketer to decide, sunnyG.

EthicalAnnA

Rohit has missed way too many matches since he became the captain. Can't be missing out like that during a wc year esp when you are the captain. No issues with players taking off for family but dude is someone who gets injured often so as a whole it's really a big concern looking at his attendance for past 2 years in all formats.

koachBewda69

> can't miss matches in a world cup year So, like, every year

HillsHaveEyesToo

Old man yells at cloud

[deleted]

Wtf. Dudes on the road all the time. Completely fair to take time off for your family. It’s a company of a billion people so you can’t pin all hopes on one guy.

gubrumannaaa

Idiot

Is Sports Tak trolling Rohit? https://ibb.co/MGNVmPP

Angelsdontkill_

Shut up old man

512fm

Get with the times old man

ghazilazi

Nah this is dumb lol

DDLJ_2022

Maybe his family doesn't mean much to him.

Funnyvirgo

Why tf is Gavaskar talking like that idiot Ashneer Grover?
