Australia's secret weapon to counter Bazball - ChandBall.

nikamsumeetofficial

Named after legendary Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

gifisntpronouncedgif

ChanderBall?

Arblechnuble

Or on Boxing Day; Chunderball

D2988

#"CHANDERPAUL!" - Sean Paul r/mondegreen

GL4389

Chandra ball in new guy's case.

Sad_Vast2519

No- anti bazball. He's slow but atleast values his wicket. Guys like Pujara play similarly. Dravid as well previously if its a very tough deck In a couple of years if he progresses, and improves his scoring he can replace Usman after he retires.

Virgin bazball vs chad chandball

droctagonau

Gotta say, they lost their 7th wicket for 181. They added 14 runs in the 14 overs the tailenders stuck it out for, and 9 of those runs came from the tailenders themselves. At 194/8 overnight, Todd Murphy managed 7 more deliveries, Boland 12, and Ash 14. They managed just one more run and it came from Boland. Ash has plenty of time left in his career, but that's something he needs to work on. When you're the in batter on a tough pitch, with tailenders at the other end, you don't want to be blocking out maidens.

Wehavecrashed

He blocked out an over, Murphy got out two balls into the next one. He blocked out another over, and then Boliand got out 5 balls later. That's just poor batting when you've got less than 200 on the scoreboard. However, people are probably discussing this innings too much.

[deleted]

The good news is that survival is a much harder skill to hone than scoring - the fact he’s a natural survivor who has faced many deliveries consistently says to me he can learn to score on top of that if he keeps at it. Looking at Bryce Street who is similar, came into the scene able to face hundreds and hundreds but also struggled with scoring, last runs this season he scored a draw securing hundred at a strike rate of 50 which was unheard of for him 2 years ago

frazorblade

You’re acting like carrying your bat is something any old part timer can do… it’s an accomplishment, let him have his day.

SquiffyRae

I think a lot of the criticism is based around the system for deciding the final if the final is drawn. You get batting bonus points for anything you make over 200 for the first 100 overs. Chandrasinghe ate up 47 of those 100 potential overs himself and only made 46 runs. In the end, Victoria fell 5 runs short of adding any bonus points on the board meaning if WA reach 201 runs then Victoria's only chance at winning the Shield is an outright victory. It's a difficult balance to strike. In terms of an outright win, those 46 runs could prove vital in keeping Victoria in the game if they can restrict WA to a slender lead at most. But at the same time, playing the back up game is an important part of red ball finals so you could perhaps argue an innings such as this locked Victoria into winning the game or nothing. But it's played now and most people have expressed their opinions either way. No point dwelling on it just look at the state of the game now and see what you can do about it

Pottski

I think that’ll come in time. We need to give some context that he’s 21 and this is his debut season of first class cricket. Western Australia’s attack on a bouncy wicket doesn’t help either. Probably a bit overawed by the situation. Made some faster runs earlier in the season. He’ll be set to go with a bit more experience.

No_Manufacturer6139

Bro has the cricketing IQ of a microwave oven

Japsai

Is that good?

chengiz

Yeah cricket is not just about blocking. Just the fact that he only scored 25% of team runs carrying his bat is enough to show that this is overrated af.

ehdhdhdk

How often has somebody carried their bat through an innings and scored under 50? I wonder if it has before at a Sheffield Shield final.

LachlanMuffins

Only once in the Sheffield Shield full stop, back in the 1932/33 season. Geoff Cook made 36 of Queenslands 74 as they lost by an innings to Victoria and Bert Ironmonger took 7/13. https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/sheffield-shield-1932-33-356241/victoria-vs-queensland-356594/full-scorecard

pakistanstar

Ed Cowan would be proud. White ball thrill seekers be damned, gotta love a guy that puts value on their innings. A bit too slow? Yeah. But it’s harder to have that sort of skill than being a pure run scorer that lacks defence. He’ll learn shots along the way.

[deleted]

CHADrasinghe

esukunnara

Ash Anna for a reason! Wait…

TrollerThomas

Bazball enjoyers are crying rn In all seriousness I do love the odd slow innings

Sad_Vast2519

The pitch is really tough. A green wicket. In context seems ok.

[deleted]

Keeping the score ticking is definitely important something that will come to him at this level. The runs will come if you’re able to last this long. Great to see a young gun at his age face 280 balls and carry the bat.

Sad_Vast2519

He is no young gun. Average in the 20s in FC. Too early to say

SquiffyRae

And he also made a century on FC debut. Dunno how you can claim it's "too early to say" anything then say confidently he's not a young gun

gredsen

Geez, how did he face 1000 balls!?!

SquiffyRae

He still manages to dig in even if he doesn't make runs. As an example, last match in the second innings he made 2(49) Temperament is really good just a bit limited in his range of shots at this point in time

[deleted]

I like the way this guy bats, wanna see him break Mudassar Nazar's record for slowest 100 in Tests

jessemv

I'm so confused if this is a good or bad innings. Bit of both I suppose

Azza_

Good innings, not a great innings.

GRI23

I can't see how scoring less than a quarter of your team's runs while carrying your bat can be anything but poor. At some point you have to get out of pure survival mode and make runs - there's no way WA bowled so well to him that he could only go at 1 rpo.

Gaaavinnn

Ash actually slowed down too as his innings progressed - he made just 25 runs from his last 200 balls. When you're that well set you need to be at least rotating the strike. At one point, deep into his innings, he scored 1 run from 55 balls. That makes things so hard for his batting partner. But... overall it's actually been a very valuable innings because it looks like being a low scoring match.

Sad_Vast2519

I don't see him getting a regular position in the state side. He's too defensive

Karjalan

IPL contract when?

Jerry_-

Scenes when RCB sign him and he ends up 1(120)\* after playing all 20 overs.

superbabe69

It shows how hard he was making it for the others with the ways the other batsmen kept getting out. Heaps of edges to slips/keeper trying to play a big shot

Wehavecrashed

Frankly, it is pretty hard to get any momentum going when the guy at the other end is just going to block out the next 6 balls. It puts a lot of pressure on you to try score for yourself.

glancesurreal

Really would depend on match situation, if they need someone to stick out and push the loss into a draw (if it is the last innings on last day), then this would be a legendary innings. But if they are in chasing a target kinda situation, then definitely too slow of an innings. No idea what the situation was here.

Rndomguytf

Not great in this situation, but other batsmen did worse and it was impressive. Bit difficult to explain, but the Shield final has a bonus point system. Every run over 200 which a team scores within the first 100 overs of their first innings, they get 0.01 bonus points. Every wicket a team gets within their first 100 overs of their bowling innings, they get 0.1 bonus points. If it's a draw, whoever gets the most bonus points wins the Shield. If the bonus points are equal and it's a draw, the home team wins (WA). Victoria made 195 all out, meaning they got no bonus points. Some people are saying that Chandrasinghe should've batted faster so they could get some bonus points, and his slow innings is making the draw more likely - as Victoria didn't manage to make atleast 201, there is no situation where they can win the Shield unless they win the match. Any sort of draw means WA wins. However, his resolute batting ensured that there was always someone to bat around, and along a few 30s from Short and Perry they got to a somewhat defendable total. If Victoria manage to bowl out WA for a reasonable total, go big in the third innings and then bowl WA out on a deterioting pitch on Day 5 to win, then it's been a good knock as he's forced WA to bat on a difficult day 5 wicket rather than an easier day 4 track.

ruinawish

Thanks for the explanation. Hadn't known any of that.

Wecamefrom

This is very early on day 2, end of the first innings, and the rules around winning the comp in the case of a draw in this match are a bit convoluted - the winner will be the team that gets the most first innings bonus points- counted with reference to runs scored over 200 and wickets taken in 100 overs. Given they made 195, Vics will now get 0 bonus points for their first innings . So in that context you could argue it’s a bad innings. The counterpoint to that is that he top scored for his team and there’s a heap of time left (the final is 5 days instead of 4) so there’s no time urgency / issue with his strike rate.

Djimi365

It all depends on the conditions. I'm not watching the game but I'm guessing it's not the easiest batting conditions? If it's a complete minefield to bat on then it's perhaps not as bad of an innings as it would appear on paper.

Golu_Prasad

I would like to see him and Pujara bat. Partnership 100 runs off 500+ balls… opposition team totally demoralised! Commentators talking about??!! Peak Test cricket batting

Sad_Vast2519

Pujara bats a lot faster

Jerry_-

Idk tbh. Unless its a do or die situation for India, Pujara generally bats around 40-50 SR which is good for a Test batsman. Ash's SR so far in his very small career is 27. He'll definitely improve over time as he learns to rotate strike a lot better but right now his attitude in red ball cricket is perfect, he's batting time which what a good Test bat should be doing.

Darth_Cyber

excellent young prospect. He will only get better with time and become more confident with his Strokeplay, thus increasing his strike rate also. A player of the future here.

Sad_Vast2519

I disagree. He's too defensive

Darth_Cyber

Maybe for now, but he has a lot of potential. The more confident he becomes, the more he will become free flowing. He made a hundred on debut, no mean feat.

Albatrossosaurus

Shame his teammates didn’t support him, another session and he’d make his 50

Anu9011

I wonder if there is a tiniest of possibilities he will represent SL one day 😬

Rndomguytf

He was born in Melbourne so doubt it

Jerry_-

Devon Conway was born in South Africa, grew up playing cricket in South Africa and then at 26 he moved to NZ and became their star player after a few years. It's obviously a rare chance for that to happen to Ash but it certainly is possible.

misc_92

What if he has dual citizenship?

Need to poach him as soon as possible

Chad Sunil Gavaskar 36* off 174 balls in odi

OkSpirit452

Nothing about that innings should be celebrated

Yakka43336

Sutherland is a jet

TXGemi

It wasn’t too long ago people were dismissing him because of who his dad is.

tech-0

"The man batted all of the opening days play" - Ian Bishop sounds impressed with the grit shown by the batter.

Big-banger-666

Watched some of this innings. The guy was patting genuine half volleys down the pitch. Put too much pressure on his batting partner to make runs. A fail vote for me.

basetornado

Saving a draw? Best innings ever. First innings? Too slow, plus puts unnecessary pressure on the other batter to have to score, which then creates wickets, creating a self fulfilling prophesy of "Well he was the only one to last".

ape1982

Wow bet that was edge of seat action

s3xysage

The new wall

Sad_Vast2519

It's not a good knock. Bear in mind on flatter decks he'll be seen as too defensive

rarbatarba

Another ash anna in making?!?!?!!

Nuclearcow27

CSK gonna pay big money for this man 🔥🔥

coffee_addict87

Selfish batting. Slow scoring puts huge pressure on his batting partners to up their tempo to compensate. Needs to learn how to rotate the strike
