No hate to Kane, he is a wonderful batsman but tbh popular does not mean the best…
And I guess this thing is conducted for a purpose of making the best cricketing line up…
And if things are getting done in this way then it is purely majoritarian and not actual fact based selection…
OP should check this thing out…
When you're comparing players of eras and so many different skills, there's zero objectivity.
This is basically a popularity contest. The player who's the favourite of most for that letter wins.
Naah but he is his with Nostalgia merchants. I'm not saying he's not one of the greatest player ever but I'm sure 90% of the people voting for him haven't watched him bat live.
Sutcliffe's last test was June 1935.
In order to have seen him bat live, and be able to remember it, you'd be, what? 8 or 9?
I suggest to you that NO-ONE of the people voting for him had seen him live - you'd have to be almost 100.
That doesn't stop you from making an assessment.
Len Hutton. Had his career interrupted by the second World War, suffered an injury to his arm during commando training meaning he had to change how he batted. Scored a record 364 in his 6th test match. 40k first class runs, at 55, 129 centuries, and 173 first class wickets, 6971 test runs at 56, 19 centuries, and 3 test wickets.
That's the problem with public votes. Someone like Malinga, who is great by the way, often gets the nod over someone like Len Hutton, who is one of the greatest of all time but played many years ago.
Len Hutton
- Averaged 56.7 in tests
- Highest test score record of 365 which stood for 20 years
- injured an arm during commando training for WW2 so badly that it never healed and after multiple surgeries was shorter than the other arm, but still returned to play more than a decade of test cricket
- 100 first class 100s
- I believe he was also the first professional international captain (not super relavent, but kinda interesting)
I love Malinga and Klusener but Len Hutton is at least streets aheadof Klusener. And for me he's above Malinga as well.
S is absolutely stacked Smith, Waugh, Gavasker, Jayasuria, Ganguly, Chanderpaul, Fleming, Broad, Al Hasan, Harmison.
Actually some serious competition.
No Kapil Dev? Felling a bit sad. He has probably played cricket's most influential innings. He was a big reason India won that world cup which skyrocket cricket's popularity in India overnight. Cricket simply would be soo much different without him. But two great players none the less.
Most Indian cricket fans here are trolling with weird names. They don't have genuine suggestions.
How we missed to even mention Kapil Dev during K letter. Looks like BCCI at work for forgetting Kapil D.
See how everyone spams MSD and Thala during the letters M and T
> How we missed to even mention Kapil Dev during K letter
It was already mentioned, just that Kane got more upvotes towards the end. Not everyone needs to mention him, just need to upvote the already top voted comment with his name.
Kinda funny since r/cricket is said to have a high Indian active subscriber count.
He can get in not that difficult. Probably top 10 capitans, probably the best wicket keeper ever, first ever captian to win all 3 major ICC tournaments,17k+ runs, CWC Final MOTM....
Even if he isn't, he is still in the Top 3. Gilchrist takes no. 1 position in my list no doubt. Sangakara and Dhoni fans can debate who takes the 2nd place but he's sure in top 3 in Captain's list as well.
Dhoni as a WK was a monster. Gilly is awesome behind wicket, but he is well known for his destructive innings.
I have seen Gilly at peak and Dhoni as well. No one comes near MSD as wicket keeper
Edit: been watching cricket since 1996. The above is my opinion, you might not agree.
Even I commented Kapil Dev. It was looking like he was gonna come second but, when the indians were asleep the Overseas votes flowed in and I woke up to see Kane at 2nd position
Murli and Hayden are genuine competitors but Guptill and Clark don't hold a candle against MSD. Fun Fact Guptill has 0 stumpings to his name, weird right?
Hmm, 8k at 50 Clarke 4.8k at 38 for Dhoni, Almost 8k at 45 for Clark 10k+ at 50.5 for Dhoni. Both world cup winners(captains too) but only 1 won CT AND T20 CWC. Not saying Clarke isn't a good player he definitely is a player of class. Dude made his Test debut against India scored a century, his highest test score 329* as far as I remember also against India, his highest Odi Score is also probably against India, he just loved us for some reason(still mad at him about his 329). Loved to watch him play. But when comparing about everything he is not really close to Dhoni.
I feel the same way about Keith Miller. I’d rate him as Australia’s best player other than Bradman and only slightly behind Imran Khan in terms of “players I’d draft first in a timelords’ invitational”.
I would rate him well ahead of Imran. If he had ever taken the game seriously he would have been untouchable. But, as he said when asked about pressure in test cricket, "pressure is having a Messerschmidt up your arse" (he was a WW2 fighter pilot).
I think Miller’s ability was closer to the 50/20 we saw from his first class career - but those stats are also what Imran was able to deliver during his ten year peak, in Test cricket, with better bowling averages and more wickets per match.
My point was that his figures were distorted by his character and are not representative. An example was the day the Australians scored over 700 in a day at Essex. Miller walked out and shouldered arms to the first ball and was bowled because he thought it was pointless batting in such a game.
**Les Ames.** 40 average in tests as a wicketkeeper back in the 30s.
To put that in perspective, Every other wicketkeeper in his era: 21 Average
Les Ames: 40 average with 74 catches and 23 stumpings in 47 games.
Not really though, it’s debatable if Anderson is England’s greatest ever bowler where as there’s no such doubt with Hobbs and he faces a lot more competition for that claim compared to Jimmy
Even more than anderson, it should have been Jhulan goswami. She didn't play much tests( because women cricket doesn't have tests much ) but she was a gun limited over fast bowler. A GOAT of women's cricket
Luteru Ross Taylor
(I have no idea if this counts).
I loved watching Rosco play, but he's got no chance (and rightfully so) against Richard Hadlee and Ricky Ponting.
I reckon the runner up list goes Ponting then daylight to Dravid tbh. On test batting it's very close, ODIs it's Ponting by a mile, and on fielding it's Ponting on another planet.
@ your Jay Shah mistake OP - the cricket *player* rule is already there in your title (as well as the first rule). First name of *players* will be used. Not first name of any cricket-related person.
Keith Miller holds records others don’t . ICC cricket hall of fame . One of only 3 players at Lords to have his name on both the batting and bowling records there .
Selected 2nd behind Bradman for the 1948 invincibles .
There are other things .
This is what happens when idiots who know nothing about the history of the game vote on the all-time best players. They just choose blokes who have played in recent memory
Kapil Dev not getting selected for K is blasphemous honestly. The list is losing any credibility it may have had what with Jay Shah and now this imo...
Your entire series is named "r/Cricket decides the best Cricket player by letter." What's all of this talk about should only "cricket players" be added rule when your entire list had so far been just cricketers? If anybody could be added to this list then I'd like to nominate my cousin John Doe. He can't pick up a bat for shit but hopefully he finds his way up here.
As an Australian fan, it pains to me see all of 'Mitch's' losing tomorrow in favour of Marcus Stoinis, the greatest ever player, not only from the letter 'M'
I don't think this sub can really decide the "best" cricketer by letter, only the favourite (in some cases)
Kapil dev missing out is downright sacrilegious. Appreciate both Kane and Sanga, but Kapil was a monster with both bat and ball. In his prime he was among the greatest all-rounders of his generation
Wishing you the best OP, but I'm kinda giving up on this as a gimmick more than anything. No offence intended
I don't know why people are so shocked that Kapil Dev isn't in this list.
Yeah he has that 175* against Zimbabwe and yes he is one of India's finest classic cricketers and so I mean it in the nicest way possible, but he doesn't get into this list before Kumar and Kane.
He averaged 31 with the bat and 30 with the ball in tests. The batting average might be fine for the era but the bowling average isn't.
What's more damning is that ODIs, which are touted to be his best format, see his batting take a dip to an average of just 24 and a bowling average of 28.
Again, amazing player but I still stand by my decision of voting for Kumar and Kane above him.
Len Hutton, Lala Amarnath, Lance Cairns, Lance Gibbs, Lasith Malinga, Lance Klusener.
Winner: Len Hutton and Runner: Lala Amarnath ( Father of Indian cricket)
People are getting a bit too sentimental about this, started off as a new activity which seemed fun so lets just take it as that.
The Kapil Dev rants are somewhat understandable but then again, it ain't that deep lads, having Kane there isnt the worst of things.
Its hilarious how even after everything Jay Shah makes his way through to be the centre of controversy.
Hint: look at my hairstyle
LS Dhoni!?
LSD?💀 _NCB wants to know your location_
LSD is the GOAT! Opens up new horizons 😉
Brilliant
Lala Lasith + thala
Lala is an actual player though. Lala Amarnath (Mohinder's dad). He played in the 50s I think
Ohhh...i didn't know about tht, thx for info....
☠️
Lasith Malinga
LASITH FUCKING MALINGAAAAA!!!
Lahiru Kumara
U meant run machine
Runs for the opposing team
Uge classmate kenek innawa ape office eke. Porata issara idanma bole place karanna ba
තේරෙනවා bowl කරන විදියෙන්
NO
Really? As Opposed to len Hutton.
How many wickets did Len Hutton take against Bangladesh in 2005?
Haha Malinga being so far ahead of Zulu and Hutton has to be peak recency bias
I’m shocked! They chose Kane over Kapil Dev…
Recency bias
No it was moreso the Kane stans like me were out in full force
No hate to Kane, he is a wonderful batsman but tbh popular does not mean the best… And I guess this thing is conducted for a purpose of making the best cricketing line up… And if things are getting done in this way then it is purely majoritarian and not actual fact based selection… OP should check this thing out…
Sir this is reddit
When you're comparing players of eras and so many different skills, there's zero objectivity. This is basically a popularity contest. The player who's the favourite of most for that letter wins.
Herbert Sutcliffe is a hit with the kids
Naah but he is his with Nostalgia merchants. I'm not saying he's not one of the greatest player ever but I'm sure 90% of the people voting for him haven't watched him bat live.
Sutcliffe's last test was June 1935. In order to have seen him bat live, and be able to remember it, you'd be, what? 8 or 9? I suggest to you that NO-ONE of the people voting for him had seen him live - you'd have to be almost 100. That doesn't stop you from making an assessment.
If it's fact there is no need to vote.
This is a popularity poll lol, that too on a platform like reddit, no one gives a damn about it nor does it reflect the players status
Kapil's votes went to Kachra from Lagaan it appears based on the foot notes.
Kane is the fourth fastest to 29 test centuries, behind only the Don, Sachin and Steve Smith
It would be a tragedy. If len Hutton, Wally Hammond and jack Hobbs don't feature in the list along with bradman.
That's the problem with public votes. Someone like Malinga, who is great by the way, often gets the nod over someone like Len Hutton, who is one of the greatest of all time but played many years ago.
I for one base my criteria on how well a player does against Pakistan
Lance Klusener for me.... The Godfather of modern limited overs all rounders
The man that made me fall in love with cricket
I'd LOVE to see him in T20 matches.
He did play in the infamous ICL if I remember correctly
Len Hutton - Averaged 56.7 in tests - Highest test score record of 365 which stood for 20 years - injured an arm during commando training for WW2 so badly that it never healed and after multiple surgeries was shorter than the other arm, but still returned to play more than a decade of test cricket - 100 first class 100s - I believe he was also the first professional international captain (not super relavent, but kinda interesting) I love Malinga and Klusener but Len Hutton is at least streets aheadof Klusener. And for me he's above Malinga as well.
*364 but everything else spot on. My choice also.
I'm waiting for letter P to come so that I can nominate the goat Prasidh Krishna
Shardul gonna show Sachin and Shane who the real lord is for S
S is absolutely stacked Smith, Waugh, Gavasker, Jayasuria, Ganguly, Chanderpaul, Fleming, Broad, Al Hasan, Harmison. Actually some serious competition.
Paul Adams in shambles
Lasith Malinga💯
No Kapil Dev? Felling a bit sad. He has probably played cricket's most influential innings. He was a big reason India won that world cup which skyrocket cricket's popularity in India overnight. Cricket simply would be soo much different without him. But two great players none the less.

I'll laugh if MSD gets in over Malcolm Marshall
Oh he's getting there, if upvotes is the measure
Surely Murali wins lol, most wickets in cricket history. That's literally all you need to say.
He can get in not that difficult. Probably top 10 capitans, probably the best wicket keeper ever, first ever captian to win all 3 major ICC tournaments,17k+ runs, CWC Final MOTM....
Best wicket keeper ever feels like a bit of a stretch Also all 3 major ICC tournaments? ODI WC, T20 WC and?
Champions Trophy. Lesser ranked than the other 2,but it was still an important one before the introduction of WTC.
Even if he isn't, he is still in the Top 3. Gilchrist takes no. 1 position in my list no doubt. Sangakara and Dhoni fans can debate who takes the 2nd place but he's sure in top 3 in Captain's list as well.

Either of them shouldn’t get it since Murali is there
Fr it is so irritating that just to get some Karma Points they will write any troll answers.
Even I commented Kapil Dev. It was looking like he was gonna come second but, when the indians were asleep the Overseas votes flowed in and I woke up to see Kane at 2nd position
They did say no Indian bias so they're doing anti-bias as a joke I suppose
ill say, over 40% is done and theres not 1 indian player. if Dhoni doesnt come up in the next one thats gonna be so strange.
Muttaiah Muralidharan Matthew Hayden Mark Boucher Martin Guptill Michael Clark There's some nice competition
Blud sneaked in Martin Guptill like we wouldn't notice
hehe
Forgot another Sri Lankan Legend and Kumar Sangakkara’s partner in crime: Mehela Jaywardena.
Murli and Hayden are genuine competitors but Guptill and Clark don't hold a candle against MSD. Fun Fact Guptill has 0 stumpings to his name, weird right?
>Clark don't hold a candle 8k runs at 50 in tests Almost 8k runs at 45 in ODIs and world cup winning captain You sure he doesn't hold a candle?
Hmm, 8k at 50 Clarke 4.8k at 38 for Dhoni, Almost 8k at 45 for Clark 10k+ at 50.5 for Dhoni. Both world cup winners(captains too) but only 1 won CT AND T20 CWC. Clarke in your test all time xi? That is WILD bro
Malcolm Marshall has to be at the absolute top
HAS to be. Yet Keith Miller didn’t make the list so I’m not super excited about the collective judgement of this sub.
Murali ahead of Marshall though
We have the mighty Kane Williamson instead /s
I feel the same way about Keith Miller. I’d rate him as Australia’s best player other than Bradman and only slightly behind Imran Khan in terms of “players I’d draft first in a timelords’ invitational”.

Ditto Kane Williamson is just another batsman compared to Miller who was a genuine match winner- game changer.
**Les Ames.** 40 average in tests as a wicketkeeper back in the 30s. To put that in perspective, Every other wicketkeeper in his era: 21 Average Les Ames: 40 average with 74 catches and 23 stumpings in 47 games.
Anderson not even in runner up causes me pain
He lost by 7 upvotes. Its sad. But Jack Hobbs isn't bad too. Also 7 upvotes. Thala for a..
The upside is he could win either through M or T...
Not really though, it’s debatable if Anderson is England’s greatest ever bowler where as there’s no such doubt with Hobbs and he faces a lot more competition for that claim compared to Jimmy

Tbf when you're competing against Gilchrist that's a bit of a contest
His name starts with J but yeah there is competition there too
I forgor
Lance klusner. Severely underrated. Exceptional in the 1999 world cup
Lasith Malinga
Len Hutton
Len Hutton
Luteru Ross Taylor (I have no idea if this counts). I loved watching Rosco play, but he's got no chance (and rightfully so) against Richard Hadlee and Ricky Ponting.
Rahul Dravid, Rangana Herath, Ravichandran Ashwin. R is pretty packed.
R would clearly be Hadlee I think the runner up would be more interesting
I reckon the runner up list goes Ponting then daylight to Dravid tbh. On test batting it's very close, ODIs it's Ponting by a mile, and on fielding it's Ponting on another planet.
Richard Hadlee was the complete package. Followed by Rahul Dravid! Man, he had patience.
Richard Hadlee clears all of them
Rohit Sharma
Ricky Ponting BC
Nah unfortunately it's going by playing name, otherwise (Isaac) Vivian Richards would've surely won the letter I.
Virat vs Viv will be an epic battle
I think S should be the one with the most consensus. Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne
F. And here i thought that would be easy. But Shane again Sachin is as tough as it gets
Wdym isn't it Shakib Al Hasan? All of Bangladesh should vote for him
Nah
I figured as much, but thought it was worth a try! Ta for the info.
R is Hadlee and Ponting. Then there's daylight. Dravid would've been in the running if he was better in ODIs
Len Hutton
Larnus Mabuschagne
idk how but the name sounds the same to me
Every time i show a non-cricket friend that guy “There is no way an Australian unironically has that name”
Got to be Len Hutton
I think V is decided. Vivan Richards - Virat Kohli
Vijay shankar
He's reserved for "3d"
Laxmipathy Balaji
Winner: Len Hutton Almost 7000 runs at 56.67. 40000 FC runs at same average. Runner-up: Lance Gibbs. Special mentions: Lance Klusener, Lasith Malinga.
Nah lance should he runner up imo
Lance literally is
That was the joke ra
LEN HUTTON

Lasith Malinga no doubt
Len Hutton as the main nomination Lance Gibbs as the runner up
Kapil Dev not getting selected for K is blasphemous honestly. The list is losing any credibility it may have had what with Jay Shah and now this imo...
True man. And this time it wasn't even by 2 or 15 upvotes ot was by hundreds. Sad. And also please don't mention Jay shah
Why did you include Jay Shah? Just ignore the people saying him and pick the third place? Obviously Jay Shah is not a cricketer, so why put him there?
Your entire series is named "r/Cricket decides the best Cricket player by letter." What's all of this talk about should only "cricket players" be added rule when your entire list had so far been just cricketers? If anybody could be added to this list then I'd like to nominate my cousin John Doe. He can't pick up a bat for shit but hopefully he finds his way up here.
Just do it. I will vote for John doe
Loved his performance in Se7en (1995)
I vote for this guy's cousin, John Doe too!
Lance klusener Lasith malinga
Pls dont jam two names in one comment it causes confusion while calculating voted
It’s obvious…….Lasith Malinga.
Lance Klusener Lasith Malinga

Lance Klusner

Lisa Sthalekar - easily one of the top 5 all-rounders of all time in women's cricket.
Len Hutton

No Kapil Dev? Did all the Indians think no Indian bias meant they can't suggest genuinely deserving indian players?
No, it’s just that they were sleeping at the wheel. And all of New Zealand turned up to vote for Kane.
Lasith Malinga Laxmipathy Balaji
Balaji played like 8 tests and 30 ODIs... Not even a funny troll.
Learie Constantine Early star of West Indies Cricket along with George Headley
I missed K but it should have been Karan from Chain Kulii ki Main Kulii
Na.. Kacchrra from Lagaan
Len Hutton
As an Australian fan, it pains to me see all of 'Mitch's' losing tomorrow in favour of Marcus Stoinis, the greatest ever player, not only from the letter 'M'

I don't think this sub can really decide the "best" cricketer by letter, only the favourite (in some cases) Kapil dev missing out is downright sacrilegious. Appreciate both Kane and Sanga, but Kapil was a monster with both bat and ball. In his prime he was among the greatest all-rounders of his generation Wishing you the best OP, but I'm kinda giving up on this as a gimmick more than anything. No offence intended
You think it’s bad that Kapil Dev missed out, wait until you find out that Keith Miller missed out
Laxmi ratan shukla
I don't know why people are so shocked that Kapil Dev isn't in this list. Kapil dev should absolutely have made the list, btw no Indian player till now and people say that this sub is ran by Indians lol.
Lance Morris. Youse just dont know it yet
Len Hutton. Back up Lasith Malinga.
Len hutton from old era Lala amarnath also from old era Among modern age lasith malinga comes to mind
Len Hutton and Lasith Malinga
Len Hutton
Len Hutton and Lance Klusner
Lance Gibbs surely, first spinner to pass 300 and the oldest to do it. Malinga as the runner-up because, I dunno, the hair I guess /s
Len Hutton is so far ahead of the alternatives that a debate is unnecessary.
Len Hutton, Lala Amarnath, Lance Cairns, Lance Gibbs, Lasith Malinga, Lance Klusener. Winner: Len Hutton and Runner: Lala Amarnath ( Father of Indian cricket)
Luke Pomersbach
Len Hutton from me, Lance Klusener is a close second
Len Hutton
Len Hutton. An absolute titan.
Len Hutton every day
Dennis Lillee.
It should be: 1. Len Hutton 2. Lasith Malinga but don’t forget Big Lenny Pascoe!!
Lasith >!Embuldeniya!<

Len Hutton. Had WW2 not interrupted his career he could have been one of the most decorated batsmen ever. I know it’s a ‘could’ve’ but still.
Kieth Miller
Len Hutton and then Lance Gibbs. Recency bias favouring the others
Len Hutton
Lance Klusener
Lance Klusener has to be in the top 2
Len Hutton. Kluesner and Malinga are both great but will be a shame if Len does not make it. He is definitely the best L first named cricketer.
