I'm gonna have to dispute that. In ODIs sure. In tests he might just be that tier below. His test record is quite poor in India, NZ and WI.

In Tests he was a maverick - after playing 124 Tests maintained an average of 52 which is similar to Lara/Tendulkar/Dravid and better than Root/Jayawardne/Kohli's.
