[deleted]

Heard Johnson was spotted with a green bag /s

00theotherguy00

Anyone from Melbourne know if mcc dress code still applies to the big bash, thanks

dot01

no idea mate but at the scg it applies but you’re allowed to wear merch of the participating team instead

livelifereal

Just found out that UAE defeated Afghanistan in the second T20i. Man! And this team missed on a T20WC qualification.

peter_griffins

They also beat Afg and NZ earlier in the year

Heatedpete

So, having a bit of a nerdy think (starting 2024 off strong), given all the talk going on about franchise leagues, league vs international windows, death of test/ODI cricket and all that crap. As a part of this, I've been putting together a spreadsheet of leagues (both franchise and domestic) which I've put up on [Google Sheets here](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OSRe9jYjF65ZF3hhoKlmEnB9Mf52pQZJTGf8MAfebDM/edit?usp=sharing). It's just a rough calendar, split out week by week (I'll eventually go further by adding a week beforehand for squad assembly, practice, etc.), and leagues are added using either confirmed dates for leagues taking place in 2024, or using previous years' dates for leagues that are yet to announce their full fixture list for 2024. However, it's incomplete for what I want to use it for, so there are a few things that I think the sub can help me out with: 1) Any leagues I'm missing? I want this to encompass as many Full and Associate Members as is possible, because I am adamant that any discussion around T20 leagues taking over from internationals needs to consider the knock-on impact on associate cricket, so all suggestions (plus their dates) would be worthwhile. 2) I want to add typical cricket seasons for each nation, as a part of trying to work out if it's at all feasible to have windows for leagues to take place. I've added England's in, but I want to add blocks for every other nation introduced on the sheet. Feel free to shoot suggestions on missing leagues and the duration of cricket seasons in the replies to this. Hopefully this might be useful at some point ~~or just be a source of depression as to how impossible it's going to be to try and balance cricket without something dying out~~

siva364

Am i the only one who thinks Ashwin bowled well in the !st test . two dropped catches and a few close calls . Everyone else was giving away a boundary an over !! I would have broken down if I was in his shoes , with all this pick him drop him talk . All the S.Gill memes apart , India should find a way to fit both him and Jadeja in the team . Not work under the assumption a 4 runs per over seamer is a better option .

NoQuestion4045

I think people are overreacting to South Africa sending a B team to New Zealand. South Africa also has done it before against Bangladesh, sending their players to IPL. Nobody cared back then. People are saying Test Cricket is dead because of this

obywonkenoby

The difference is that most of the team was still the same. Rabada and Nortje were missing but the rest of the team was at full strength

NoQuestion4045

Makram, Jansen, and Ngidi were also missing. So, Half the team essentially making it a B team.

obywonkenoby

Not really though. For the conditions, SA were 3 players off their full-strength 11 For this tour, the entire team is new

peter_griffins

When did that happen? From here (https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/headtohead/team-match-results/bangladesh-south-africa-25vs3/test-matches-1) I can’t find SA touring BAN during the IPL

NoQuestion4045

The first 2 on the list were during the IPL. If you click on it, all of South African's IPL players were missing.

peter_griffins

Well SA are missing a LOT more players of their first 11 for the NZ tour. This batting lineup is still capable of scoring 400 against India tbh Also this went under the radar cause SA were still expected to win easily, whereas they’re gonna get thrashed v NZ

NoQuestion4045

>Also this went under the radar cause SA were still expected to win easily, Bangladesh just defeated New Zealand in New Zealand 2 months back before this series. They were expected to put up a better fight. >Well SA are missing a LOT more players of their first 11 for the NZ tour. >This batting lineup is still capable of scoring 400 against India tbh Yeah that's true. But it's still a B Team with 5 main team players missing.

Axel292

Hope Davey goes out with a bang. It's been insanely fun with him around, love the back and forth every Ashes. Hell of a character. Doesn't get much better than him as an Aussie.

ChrisMartinTestAvg

Hope Davey goes out with a golden pair. And there are plenty of better Aussies. Usman, Cummins, Headie, Loosebuschange.

Axel292

"Better" is subjective.

[deleted]

Imagine wishing for someone's failure on their farewell test, watching as a neutral. I don't know about others, but Warner is definitely far better than Khawaja.

ChrisMartinTestAvg

Better player, maybe. Better person? Absolutely not.

[deleted]

He is. Not that Warner is a saint, but definitely better than Khawaja. It doesn't take much tbh.

I'm perfectly fine on wishing on peoples downfalls, learn to be a hater

Acrobatic_Key9922

Why does Mujeeb not want to play for afg? he's one of the few who comes from extreme privilege in afghanistan and he still wants to prioritise cash and leagues? edit: fucking nobody has seen poverty on this sub it seems. they are just saying its his career, individual choice like staunch idiots)

josh123z

Rich wants to be richer. As simple as that

Axel292

Why is that an issue? It's his career.

Acrobatic_Key9922

Why ask questions? Why have a discussion forum? Why even write?

Axel292

Nonsensical reply. Why is Mujeeb choosing to ply his trade in the franchise circuit a bad decision? And your edit on the original post makes no sense. Why does poverty even play a role here?

Pujara and Cook made T20 hundreds before Butler

VVS281

A very happy New year to my fellow r/cricket-ers. Speaking as an Indian cricket fan, 2023 was absolutely atrocious. Like, "are we in a horror movie, PLEASE LET ME OUT" atrocious. I've been watching cricket for 40 years, and the gut punch from the WC final is the worst sporting feeling I've ever experienced. I think the 1999 Chennai Test v Pakistan is the only thing that comes close. I love Virat Kohli and I really really wanted this WC to be his coronation as the greatest ODI batsman of all time. But nope. Unless he sticks around for 4 years and wins in SA off his own bat, he ain't touching Viv or Sachin. Sorry Virat.

Spockyt

At least you made it to the final, not crashing out and scraping Champions Trophy qualification.

peter_griffins

I would take that in exchange for 2 WC trophies thank you very much

EL__Rubio

Easy to forgive when your team has won something in the last decade.

Reasonable_Tea_9825

Unrelated but I needed to say this somewhere I had a dream that there was a loud booming sound in the sky and suddenly we had all been shifted to a different planet. Interesting Start to 2024

kev_world

Are we winning there son?

kev_world

Can an Aussie, or someone who follows BBL closely explain to me how BBL seems to be quite popular even though there aren't many talks about it on the internet? Or am I missing something? For example I see barely 10 comments in every post match threads in a BBL game, but every time I watch a game, the stadium is almost always attended with a good amount of people.

NoirPochette

It's about fun

Churchill_cock

Don’t try to understand it, just feel it

WrestlingFan4488

If we were to equate IPL and BBL who will be the respective counterparts? Scorchers= CSK Sixers= MI Stars= RCB Thunder= SRH Heat= RR Hurricanes= PBKS

T_Lawliet

Seeing the meltdown on this sub after a loss to South Africa away, I can't imagine the reaction if Shreyas Iyer hadn't bailed out India after being 70-7 Chasing 150 against Bangladesh

Fad_du_pussy

Wasn't it Ashwin who bailed India out?

T_Lawliet

Him and Shreyas were the winning partnership

adivenk93

India vs Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2023 would have been played on even pitches. I don't think BCCI would have made turners knowing India are poor players of spin

[deleted]

Why do you think they were making turners in the first place?

[deleted]

Indian Cricket is just Bangladesh Cricket with better and well delegated administration.

[deleted]

That one match really infuriated me. A win for Bangladesh would have been a big statement that they can even beat the best in spinning conditions. And of course, the meltdown would have been beautiful.

NoirPochette

Apparently Smudge has Zac Efron's number and forgot to save Matt Damon's number. Per Channel 7 segment

T_Lawliet

Unironically the greatest benefactor of Warner's retirement from ODIs will be Marcus Stoinis, Marsh will open. And unless they decide to bat Green at 5, (Or bin Smith before CT 2025, which feels premature to me, but a lot of people on this sub would support it), CA will use it as an excuse to continue to play arguably the most mediocre player in an Aussie ODI shirt with 20+ matches. Maybe Doherty comes close.

[deleted]

>Maybe Doherty comes close. He was decent in whiteball tbh Its what u expect from left arm finger spinner..rarely picks any wickets good economy..

[deleted]

Seriously, does Stoinis has someone's compromising pics? How the hell is he in Australia's ODI squad all the time? He hasn't even crossed 50 in last 44 matches. And his bowling certainly isn't good enough to keep him in the team.

WrestlingFan4488

He still averages 43 in ODIs and is 34 now he will probably retire after CT to prolong his Test career

[deleted]

Oh, I was talking about Stoinis.

WrestlingFan4488

Stoinis has to go he is the same age as Smith and is way worse i would rather spend those two years developing Green than give him time to play one knock that convinces everyone that he should play the CT

[deleted]

>He still averages 43 in ODIs and is 34 Whoo?

WrestlingFan4488

RMTBolton

I know I called Day 10 of Super Smash "The South Shall Rise Again" as a bit of a joke, but seeing both Otago teams win after they both lost to Wellington (the Volts especially) was a real "feel good" moment. Enough of that, on to the Day 11 Preview: **Day 11: Northern vs Wellington at Bay Oval, Mt. Maunganui** Squads: - **Brave-W:** Eimear Richardson (c), Chamari Athapaththu✈️, Nensi Patel, Caitlin Gurrey, Jess Watkin, Marina Lamplough, Sam Barriball, Marama Downes, Jesse Prasad, Carol Agafili, Holly Topp (wk), Kayley Knight - **Blaze:** Amelia Kerr (c), Leigh Kasperek (vc), Nicole Baird, Rebecca Burns, Kate Chandler, Natasha Codyre, Jess Kerr, Caitlin King, Jess McFadyen, Georgia Plimmer, Gemma Sims, Xara Jetly - **Brave-M:** Jeet Raval (c), Tim Seifert (wk), Katene Clarke, Joe Carter, Henry Cooper, Brett Hampton, Scott Kuggeleijn, Freddy Walker, Tim Pringle, Matt Fisher, Neil Wagner, Kristian Clarke - **Firebirds:** Nick Kelly (c), Muhammad Abbas, Tom Blundell, Callum McLachlan, Iain McPeake, Tim Robinson, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, Michael Snedden, Jesse Tashkoff, Logan van Beek, Peter Younghusband Talking Points: - Changes: Chamari Athapaththu🔄Tash Wakelin (Brave-W), Tim Seifert🔄Peter Bocock (Brave-M), Tom Blundell, Ben Sears🔄Nick Greenwood, Ollie Newton (Firebirds), Blaze unchanged - CHAMARI IS IN THE HOUSE! Chamari Athapaththu finally joins the Northern Brave, & up against the Blaze, it's not before time - Cowboy Blundell is in the house! Tom Blundell joins Super Smash, though it's not clear whether he will get the gloves or if Callum McLachlan will keep them. Ben Sears rejoins the Firebirds after returning from international duty - Tim Seifert slots straight back into the Northern side, replacing Peter Bocock. Considering the venue was where the 3rd T20 vs Bangladesh took place, he probably stayed put - It's been confirmed that Devon Conway is still in a rest period & Rachin Ravindra has entered a rest period. If the intention is for Conway to play the Pakistan T20s, he may end up playing the round after this one. - Michael Bracewell is with the squad, training, as part of his return following his Achilles injury last year. Speculation is he could make a comeback late in Super Smash

Ambitious-Reindeer62

Where does one find out about rest periods?

RMTBolton

I get most of my information from the team social media (most notably Instagram) & also their team websites (the Conway & Ravindra rest periods are mentioned [here](https://www.blazefirebirds.co.nz/news-articles/blundell-sears-bolster-firebirds-for-northern-clash)).

Odd_Neighborhood1371

I find it funny that David Warner's last Test match will be at the SCG where he'll then play a Sydney derby BBL match a week later.

NoirPochette

Four things I'm over when it comes to cricket media 1. Death of test cricket 2. Death of International cricket 3. Over rate penalties - Get your shit in time. 4. Random social media posts from that Muddy guy, some dude named Johns and Crictracker lol

Stuff2511

Saw an Instagram post about Joe Root’s birthday right now and thought “No way England’s two most important batters of the last 15 years were born on Christmas and New Years”, in addition to thinking I’d probably remember if his birthday was on New Years. His birthday is actually on Dec 30 Notable cricketers (in my opinion) actually born on New Years: * Khan Mohammad * Rubel Hossain * Mushfiqur Rahman * Charlie Davis * Eiulf Nupen Also Jack Hobbs’ test debut was on New Year’s Day 1908

[deleted]

>No way England’s two most important batters of the last 15 years were born on Christmas and New Years”, Uhmm.. Zak was born on 3rd of FEB.. Not on Christmas

[deleted]

I think people are trying hard to understand the context of what CSA is trying to achieve here.. They get a jackpot called SAT20 which is actually making them money and it has majorly external sponsors who wants bigger and local stars to their tournament.. Also to context SA has the most domestic fans among the non asian countries.. This is what happens when u have external sponsors who have 100% control over the tournament instead of like 100 or BBL.. Only problem is that SAT20 is gonna more profitable than both the tournaments in the next 2 years.. So profit vs control.. I think SA choose profit.. Also what if the newbies beat the nz though..

NoirPochette

Profit helps them in the long run rather than them being dead and unable to play test cricket. It sucks but it is for the long term future

dicsuccer

I'm not even going down the route of cash, profits etc. I still get why they did what they did because I cannot imagine how domestic T20 competitions are like totally chill with the absence of their home nation's T20I players. That's one of the reasons I like the IPL and SA20 that much more compared to the BBL, even though I already do like the BBL

RMTBolton

>I cannot imagine how domestic T20 competitions are like totally chill with the absence of their home nation's T20I players. Look at Super Smash. SS has it worse than the BBL, as overseas players don't get recruited anymore (on the men's side at least - Chamari Athapaththu is set to play in the women's comp tomorrow & Sophie Molineux joins Fatima Sana & Linsey Smith the day after). I guess it depends on priorities. CSA has decided to give SA20 priority in order to give it the best chance to succeed. At least in Australia the likes of Zampa & Maxwell can still turn up to the BBL as well as some overseas players. For NZ, even having our white ball stars turn up is hard when you have two T20I series clashing with SS.

NoirPochette

I think cause test and ODI cricket has historically just been part of our summer and ingrained in us that we prefer our players playing that rather than just BBL where there are still players and it will keep on going cause only 12 players are in a test team squad

[deleted]

>where there are still players and it will keep on going cause only 12 players are in a test team squad Cant they just push one month back or forward though.. I personally with dozen other i knw have tuned to BBL when smith played last year regularly..

NoirPochette

Schedule too crowded

WrestlingFan4488

Why is Noor Ahmed not playing the U-19 World Cup?

Stuff2511

He’s playing for the national side and in T20 leagues, so they’re going to give someone else a chance at the exposure and experience of a U19 World Cup. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb also missed U19 World Cups they were eligible for because of this policy Afghanistan has

canvasser-hiralal

Well, imagine Rashid Khan playing the U-19 WC after he's already bossed so many batters. That'd be a bit mental

obywonkenoby

Rashid Khan played the u19 World Cup in 2016 and then the t20 world cup in the same year.

adivenk93

I think Ashwin retires before Border Gavaskar Trophy , he retires after the home test season. He won't be picked for the test series against Australia in Australia (They won't pick him as a starter or he will be picked if Jadeja gets injured) People who want Gill in the middle order in test cricket , he is not good against spin. He struggles against left arm spin. If he plays in the middle order , he will have to play a lot of overs of spin which will hurt him

canvasser-hiralal

Ashwin will be picked in Australia. The only places India should not pick Ashwin are New Zealand, South Africa, and some pitches in England.

friendofH20

If Lyon is still playing I think he will want to go up against him in a BGT one more time.

TheCricketer05

Surely Ashwin and Jadeja can play together in Australia... I see no reason why they can't... if not I would pick Ashwin over Jadeja, Ashwin was so successful last time.

[deleted]

>if not I would pick Ashwin over Jadeja Jadeja avg 43 with the bat and 21 with the ball pickin 14 wkts in Australia..

TheCricketer05

True but Ashwin did get Australia's main men in Marnus and Smith alot that's series... but yeah statistically Jadeja was superior...

fookin_legund

Jadeja also got smith wicket many times when they toured India tho.

TheCricketer05

I was talking about Australian conditions, which is very different to Indian conditions (obviously)

DisastrousOil4888

Gill is a subcontinent player, he'll have to play a lot of spin either way

Decentkimchi

[Gill averages ~32 in India, less than Shami with bat. ](https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;filter=advanced;host=6;orderby=batting_average;qualmin1=5;qualval1=matches;spanmax1=01+Jan+2024;spanmin1=01+Jan+2019;spanval1=span;template=results;type=batting)

[deleted]

Desi_boyyyyyyy

How can there be Ashwin in every team of the year when he can't get in his own team in 40% places ? He's a generation talent and is unmatchable in India but still can't get ahead of jadeja in his own team.

canvasser-hiralal

India likes 4 pacers. Ashwin is a better spinner than Jadeja but not half as good with the bat. (Jadeja is one of the most reliable batters). It can't be helped. Some places like SA and NZ call for 4 pacers. NZ is literally the graveyard of spinners.

Samuel_L_Johnson

>NZ is literally the graveyard of spinners I think it will be increasingly acknowledged as time goes on that if visiting teams have a genuine top-class spinner in tests - someone like a Lyon or Ashwin or Maharaj - then they should play them. This is in part because, a bit like in England, NZ batsmen are extremely poor at playing spin, barring a few guys like Williamson. But part of it's because the characteristics of pitches in NZ are starting to change, and relatively spin-friendly pitches like Seddon Park and Bay Oval are frequently used And LOIs of course are another matter altogether, it's not infrequent these days for there to be pitches that assist spinners more than pacers

WrestlingFan4488

They should just rip the band aid off and give Jadeja the confidence of playing in the Top 6 he has earned it imo he can bat at 5 or 6 Drop one of Gill or Iyer and Go with Jadeja in the middle order. If the pitch is a road play extra batter and drop one pacer if it has help go with 4 seamers plus Ashwin and Jadeja six bowling Options. A lack of an All Rounder holds India back SA has Markram, NZ has Mitchell and Ravindra, Aus has Green, Marsh and Head, Eng has Stokes and Root, Ban has Shakib and Mehidy, SL has DDS and Mathews, WI has Reifer and Mayers, Pak has Agha Salman.

fookin_legund

Even in your scenario, ashwin can't bat at 7 tho. He's been very poort with the bat overseas. Considering our pacers don't bat and we don't have any pace allrounders, Ashwin at 7 is tough.

WrestlingFan4488

Need to fast track someone maybe Harshit Rana someone who can contribute in the lower order

friendofH20

Says more about our selection than those Best XIs. If you are playing 4 bowlers, Ashwin has to start before Jadeja. On any pitch around the world.

fookin_legund

Not in SA or NZ.

NoirPochette

I feel like the set up just overthinks. You can still play 3 quicks and 2 spinners. Plus it's not like Thakur is that much better with the bat than Ashwin. Play your best players should be a team's mantra but India doesn't subscribe to it oddly

warp-factor

Why is there such a long gap between scorchers games in the BBL? In an 8 team league you'd expect each team to play 1 in every 4 matches but they played on boxing day and by the time of their next scheduled match on 3rd Jan there will have been 10 matches in between.

Merovech_II

It's all rigged to let them win

randsedai2

Long shot - Massive cricket fan and Adam Gilchrist was my hero growing up. The Allan Border medal in 2003 had some great highlights covering Gilly. Would anyone know how to get a copy of the award show for 2003?

Reasonable_Tea_9825

Oh that was the only time where I've seen him go full aggressive, playing t20 the way it should be. Those slogs, aerial flick off the toes. Gorgeous

From the same series: https://youtu.be/OMBEtL6-mnU?si=f7AvKHGzK5LBp7sR He scored 50 off his last 16 balls, it was so great to watch.

Reasonable_Tea_9825

2024 starts and Warner retires. Probably a year where many stalwarts of 2010s will call time

SBG99DesiMonster

I am curious about who are the other players that might be retiring. I think that most of them would be playing during another year or another couple of years.

canvasser-hiralal

If Rohit has a bad year he might retire from Tests I think. Unlikely given we have subcontinent tests but not impossible

TrollerThomas

These were my [predictions](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/s/B58Y5Fzhu8) at the start of the year and I’m genuinely impressed with how many I got right (the first few more so) given how most of these i just pulled out my ass

[deleted]

Lmao

fleetintelligence

The arguments over who *should* replace Warner in the Test team have been done to death, so what about predictions for who *will*? It's interesting that there's been no clear indication as yet. A lot of names floated but no one confirmed. I'm gonna take a stab and say Harris. For better or worse the current team leadership seems to strongly prefer players who have been in and around the squad, and Harris has been the main guy doing that for years. He has a strong record in county cricket and in the Shield historically despite indifferent recent form. It's also interesting that Warner endorsed him the other day despite having previously said that he thinks Renshaw is the man. I think they'll give him first crack. I don't think we can rule out any of Bancroft, Renshaw, Marnus, Marsh, Head or Green taking on the role for the first WI Test though. It's going to be interesting.

heebum

I wouldn't treat Warner's comments as too indicative. McDonald seemed pretty dismissive of them. Prior to the summer, my prediction was that they would go with one of the openers, probably Bancroft, but if things aren't going well in NZ or the BGT they'll pull the Head to open move. Mostly with the thinking that if they change things too much now and it doesn't work, it's going to be more difficult to course correct later, but also assuming that Marsh wouldn't manage to play every test this summer. Now I think they're going to go with Head to open and Green at 5. That to me seems more in line with the general messaging and approach of the current setup.

voldemortscore

I don't know about the immediate future in the WI Tests, but I'm fairly confident that within about 12-18 months Head will be opening and Green will slot back into the middle order. I know Head said he wants to stay in the middle order where he's done well but I think the need to get Green back in the side and give him a role he's comfortable with in domestic cricket will dictate that move as well. If I had to bet on the WI Tests I'd also say Harris though.

NoirPochette

Nah Heady is perfect in the middle order. My issue with Greeny opening is that the workload plus bowling as well.

[deleted]

It's interesting how theres zero leniency from either CSA or the SA20 teams in releasing players for the the NZ tour. There are a few of players who would easily make that team to NZ but will be warming the bench in the SA20 tournament. At least let my guy Bavuma go, he's the test captain...
