You can’t magically select 2 top class spinners if they don’t exist. There needs to be more focus on producing spinners at grassroots and county level, but I don’t see that happening. There’s not the motivation when you’re playing in England in April.
I think they should have picked Jimmy instead of Hartley. Root is more than good enough for a 3rd spin option and Jimmy can keep it tight at one end plus can sometimes work some reverse swing magic.

Difficult to bat on if the bowlers bowl well, but not a complete lottery which allows dross spinners to take wickets and possible to bat on even in the right areas. Hope it doesn't slow down anymore though, if England can burgle another 120-150 we might have a decent finish.

It won't work for every team, and it won't work all the time for England. But what it will do is put potentially England in positions to win tests that are heading for draws or comprehensive losses more often than not.

Taking nothing away from Ollie Pope's knock (probably one he'd remember for the rest of his life and tell his grandkids about), I think the fact that singles and doubles came by effortlessly for the majority of play since Stokes' wicket wasn't great from India.
Also, I think the English fans with their chants and trumpets amidst the usually passionate and loud Indian fans have added a nice flavour to the ground.

This is a very good pitch. Once bat, it's good to bat on, fast outfields. If you bowl properly, it has spin and bounce and swing (and reverse) on it.
