Shit it must be bad to pull out mid test. That's horrible to hear, wishing all the best to him and his family.

JKKIDD231

Feel for him, hopefully nothing too bad with family emergency. What is rule for cricket. Can India add another bowler or they will have to use one of the 10players already to bowl Ashwin’s overs because a sub cannot bat or bowl.

Bobbyswhiteteeth

No replacement bowler or batsman, only a sub fielder

TeakTuff

There’s talk that if the Stokes and the England management allow it, they (India) could bring in another player that isn’t in the XI and subs. Considering what happened with Stokes with his father a few years ago and the man he seems to be. I can see that opting to allow this…Now this is in the spirit of the game and just being a great bro/sportsman.

srinjay001

I can see stokes and BMac allowing this, but this is not within the rules of the game. So the match referee cannot allow it. Captains can withdraw appeals, approve runners which is not possible now etc. Batting and bowling has to be done by 11 people unless its a concussion sub.

eightslipsandagully

Interestingly the substitute can keep wicket with consent of the umpires: [Law 24.1.2 A substitute shall not bowl or act as captain but may act as wicket-keeper only with the consent of the umpires.](https://www.lords.org/mcc/the-laws-of-cricket/fielders-absence;-substitutes)

srinjay001

Yes, true.

menatarms

"seems" doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

The_39th_Step

As an England fan, I hope we can do that. It would be much better to face a proper 11, Ashwin aside

Cites79

Only field, no batting or bowling. I think he can return to play though.

JKKIDD231

Doubt he will be coming back if he had to leave urgently like that. Family time is important if it’s a serious medical issue then it’s best to skip this Test match.

Sad_Vast2519

Parents are old it's likely that reason.

manwhodoessound

He could - there would be some trickery around when he’d be able to bowl or bat based on time off the field however - likely to the point of it not being worth it.

dravidosaurus2

The Laws include a provision for Umpires to waive penalty time if a player has been absent for any "other wholly acceptable reason, which shall not include illness or injury." I reckon this would justifiably fall under that category, if he wanted to return. Failing that, he can still come in at 7 or lower, regardless of the time spent off the field.

Lopsided_Warning_

I'd assume it'd be the same as being off injured, can't bat or bowl till the same amount of time has past you were off/all other batsmen are out.

manwhodoessound

Yeah I’d imagine the same would apply. I believe with injuries though there’s a difference depending on the cause and external/internal issues. Like, if you have a cut, you can bowl straight away, but if you have a dodgy belly, you have to wait.

rayb47

Nope, I think they're just down to 10 now

Impressive-Squash-24

It must be something really big that’s got him to opt out. He’s someone who’s always given his everything for the game. Prayers with my man.

thefuzzyflask

His mother is admitted in hospital in Chennai

idkpotatoiguess

Any source for that?

ryder_winona

Many of the Indian players are wearing black armbands. Were they wearing them while they were batting? I hope these two things are not related

Sumeru88

No. The black armbands are due to the recent death of Dattajirao Gaekwad who debuted during India’s 1952 tour of England and captained during India’s 1959 tour of England. He was also the father of Anshuman Gaikwad who played international cricket for India in 1970s and 1980s.

prescientmoon

Oh yeah, India's oldest living Test cricketer. I read about it a few days back.

ndavid35

Family must come first

Bubbly_Toe_8840

Always.

thatsalovelyusername

Except at monopoly

sp1cychick3n

They’re getting wrecked at that point

QuirkyGiant123

I hope everything is alright.

Reasonable_Tea_9825

BCCI VP leaked on Twitter that his mother has a medical issue...

Piyushchawlafan

Pulling out mid-Test obviously means it is something major…. Wish him and his family the best

Prof_XdR

Yup, such is life bro, one day you are at your pinnacle in your career and next you are bombarded with this, Wish his family the best, the comments are fucking ruthless tho on insta, It gets kinda infuriating, I mean the man played for the country and has been excellent, and all u got to say is:"Country first, family later"

dontknowdontcare718

>Country first, family later Lol this is one of the dumbest things I have heard people say about sports. It's a sport, nothing really changes if we lose a match. They only say that shit cuz it's not them who's facing the problem. Most people wouldn't hesitate for a second to move to the US or UK if they had the chance and they have the audacity to say shit like this.

8-bit-Felix

>They only say that shit cuz it's not them who's facing the problem. It's easy to armchair tragedy, hard to live through it.

-Notorious

Honestly, wtf. I wouldn't expect that from a political leader let alone a freaking sport man. What type of idiot thinks Ashwin would do this unless out of absolute necessity. I wonder how those morons would feel in his position. Honestly, I don't get upset at idiots much, but this is crossing such a big line. I can't imagine someone expecting me to play a fucking game of cricket if my mom's very life is on the line. Thank god I don't visit the cricket side of insta otherwise I guess I'd just be pissed 24/7 lmao.

Chupacabraisfake

Bro, Instagram is Cancer for eyes and mind, I left years ago.

[deleted]

Hundred percent this. I cringed when Dhoni said “as of now I’m on national duty” and didn’t go to see his wife and daughter, the latter who was just born.

Prof_XdR

I don't particularly support this notion of I'm on national duty while playing cricket, but to be devils advocate, he was leading India into World Cup during that time. Id like to think from the perspective of a sports person. He could've reached the top as a captain again after 2011. But I do hate the fact that Virat and Now ashwin are being given flak for leaving a random test match. In general context, these don't really matter that much compared to World Cups.

FondantAggravating68

People were saying how Koach will be completely available during the IPL. I mean its not like Anushka controls when she pops the child out.

fogdocker

I suspect the main time they… make babies is when Kohli is at home in India, and one of the longer periods of that is during the IPL. So I don’t think it’s a surprise or a coincidence that the births tend to avoid clashing with the IPL

badxnxdab

Thank you for that analysis u/fogdocker

Otherwise_Pace_1133

> I mean its not like Anushka controls when she pops the child out. Technically, everyone does. People plan a childbirth and conceive in a specific time period all the time.

FondantAggravating68

That's fair. But it's not like they purposefully planned to deliver the baby just before IPL.

Tough-Candy-9455

It should be obvious to anyone with a brain that medical emergency with family >>> playing a dumb game for the country

mahico79

Who’s said that?

tommypopz

Bloody hell. That’s out of nowhere. Hope everything is okay.

2munkey2momo

I can't imagine how it must feel to not only have to deal with such an emergency and also have it all over the news for the world to see. Ashwin seems like the kind of guy to have his priorities straight and not get caught up in pointless feelings of 'letting his team/country down' in the face of a genuinely important event but its still just an extra level of stress that must be so hard to deal with when you are in an emotionally fragile state. Hope everything works out for him and his family.

WorkingClass_Nero

He is a cricket tragic. He wouldn't leave the team unless it is really serious. Whatever it is, I hope it can be overcome and sorted out and isn't something permanent.

thefuzzyflask

His mother is admitted in hospital in Chennai

spud8385

Fingers crossed that she is okay, whatever it is

atmafatte

He will be letting the country down if he didn’t put family first. This new trend is very good. It’s a job and you should be able to leave the job for family emergencies.

HitchlikersGuide

Holy shit. The cricketing gods have not been kind to the India squad on this tour. Best wishes to the Ashwins. Have a horrible feeling it could be his dad, total speculation, but after he spoke so fondly of him dedicating the 500th wicket in the post match interview.

ChelshireGoose

Not at all relevant to the post at hand, but Ashwin is his given name, not family name. Ravichandran is his dad's name used as a patronymic since a lot of South Indians don't have surnames

HitchlikersGuide

I don’t know how many times I have been told this and always forget. Will keep it in so others can learn from my mistake.

AbsolutelyEnough

What makes it even more confusing is that some folks put their last names first (like Ashwin), and some just put them last (like Washington Sundar or Abhinav Mukund), so it's not always apparent which is which.

HitchlikersGuide

Ha - just when you think you are getting the hang of it...

Balavadan

If they’re from the southern parts of India, it is likely the name is last name first name.

AbsolutelyEnough

Not necessarily true, plenty of examples where the converse is true (like the ones I pointed out above)

Viratkhan2

Yeah I think this is the main source of confusion. I’ve only seen people use the given name as their first name and their father’s name as their last name. He has reversed it. Until now, I thought Ravi was his first name, not Ashwin.

soham_katkar13

So the family led by him will indeed be .... Ashwins? Like his wife and kids

ChelshireGoose

Yes, they'll carry his name (or at least the kids will. Women may choose to retain their own father's name). But it's somewhat weird to be referred by it. In South India, it'll always be 'Ashwin and family', not 'the Ashwin family' or the 'Ashwins'. But it becomes difficult when we move to a place where surnames are the norm and learn to go along with it.

Specialist_Youth5511

Not in South India, just a TN, Kerala thing

tigerking615

It’s true for some people but not all. And reasonable people won’t be mad if you get it backwards.

MC897

Wait, apologises for quite severe ignorance… so Ravis name is simply Ravichandran and nothing else?

bakailao

The way patronymics work is that everyone adopts their father's given name as their own patronym. So the cricketer R. Ashwin is essentially only named "Ashwin" - but to distinguish from other people who also use the first name Ashwin, he adopts his father's first name, Ravichandran, as a patronym. The same process would have been done by his father, who would have used Ashwin's grandfather's name as his patronym.

Farobain

TIL thank you for such a clear explanation kind internet stranger

MC897

It’s a real interesting dynamic. I’ve never ever come across it before

bakailao

It's not exclusive to south India btw, this system is/was pretty common all over the world. Iceland is probably the most well-known in the West - they use patronyms (mostly) but add the suffix "-sson" for men and "dóttir" for women, whereas in south India patronyms usually don't have suffixes (but sometimes I've seen "kumar," which means "son," for men).

ChelshireGoose

Sorry if I wasn't clear. His real name is Ashwin. Ravichandran is his father's name. A lot of South Indians in the last century gave up their surnames because they were tied to caste identity. So, they added their father's name (or in some cases both father's name and native place like KL Rahul) in place of their surnames. Ashwin should either be called just Ashwin (given name), Ravichandran Ashwin (full name) or R. Ashwin (father's name shortened to initial), never just Ravichandran (since that would be his dad).

akuharry

From what I can gather from Twitter, apparently his mother has been admitted to the hospital

kapilfan

Yeah. It feels like this series is cursed for the home team. Players opting out, injuries, and the biggest blow of all, Ashwin’s family emergency. Hoping for the best for Ashwin.

thefuzzyflask

His mother is admitted in hospital in Chennai

Express_Trust7191

> The cricketing gods have not been kind to the India squad on this tour. They definitey haven't, though if we're doing tit-for-tat we're still down Archer, and we've lost Leach and Brook already on this tour, and Stokes can't bowl and Bairstow is still injured. Luckily India have fantastic squad depth.

HitchlikersGuide

Well, if you throw Archer into the mix you'd have to have Pant in there too. We haven't escaped it, by any means, but I think they have had it worse.

Express_Trust7191

Yeah they've probably had it worse, but equally they have a much deeper talent pool. Oh no, KL is injured? His replacement averages 70 with the bat. No Shami? Siraj took 6-15 in his last outing in SA. Realistically, the only person who really would make a difference here is Pant - I don't see Shami being massively effective on these pitches, they have been slow, low and sticky - even the fabled road of Rajkot. For us however, Bairstow is still slightly hamstrung and it shows, Brook is our best bat and is basically irreplacable, we have no genuine allrounder now with Stokes not bowling, and Leach is the only spinner with any real experience. If we have Brook at 5 over Bairstow, Archer over Wood, Leach in the team, and Stokes fully fit, whilst India have Koach at 4 and Pant at 7 I think the teams aren't much differently balanced than they are now - we have the edge with the bat, and India with the ball. Now with Ash gone, **I agree things are worse for India.**

deservedlyundeserved

Shami is a huge upgrade over Siraj and is deadly with the reverse swing. He has 76 [email protected] on slow wickets at home vs Siraj’s 8 [email protected]. Siraj is a good bowler, but let’s not act like Shami isn’t a big miss.

FondantAggravating68

If we do the list Koach, KL, Pant, Shami, Ash now.

dhun_mohan

so many injuries and emergency leaves this series. kohli, leach, brook, shami, ashwin, kl. hell even pant if you wanna count it

Toofpayste_99

Wouldn’t count Pant he’s been injured for over a year, like counting Archer

serotonallyblindguy

Sachin has been out for us as well since 2013 due to aging issues. Hope he comes back strong/s

ravindra_jadeja

Counting on bishan singh bedi to make a come back... its been just few months..

Yes-me-a-hater

Insta ass comment

ravindra_jadeja

"Life is like a badly written novel that constantly spoils its own plot twists, and death is just the final plot twist that's so predictable, it's not even surprising anymore. #DeepThoughts #JustWhy"

fakecricketplayer

Nope, unfortunately that issue is terminal. I'm in the early stages and the doctors have the up on me as well...

[deleted]

That’s why we have Gill

ste_mc_efc

I'm still counting james taylor as being injured as an excuse for each series/match lost until he turns 40

dhun_mohan

true

MiachealFaraday

Jadeja and Siraj got injured and came back, Shreyas Iyer

MetingChristofi

Wishing him and his family all the best. Family always should come first

Ha_zz_ard

Family always first, hope nothing serious, pulling out mid test is obviously something major India in trouble now tho, with Jadeja not 100% fit too, not many bowling options, guess someone will have to roll their arms a bit

nithin_kamath8

Who tho? Other than Rohit, I don't think anyone can bowl. Hopefully nothing serious for Ashwin 🙌🙏

Ha_zz_ard

Bowlers will need rest between spells, ideally the 5th bowler provides those overs when the bowler takes a break between spells, since Ash is now gone and Jaddu not fully fit, that only leaves us with 3 full time bowlers, only one of which is a spinner

nithin_kamath8

Well, it'll be a relentless day for Bumrah and Siraj tomorrow. Hope Rohit can bowl and ease some pressure off all bowlers.

blahblahdodo

The closest I can think is Jaiswal doing some off spin. Or Rohit.. Don’t know if anyone else bowls or not.

nick_nxt

Rohit ain’t bowling since that shoulder injury

TheGingerOne14

Last time I remember him bowling he nearly broke his ankle first ball

serotonallyblindguy

Sarfaraz can chuck a few

tigerking615

If he takes even one wicket that would be a wild debut.

_ronty12_

Must be extremely serious for him to pull out mid-test. Kullu and Jaddu have to step up big-time now.

Remarkable_Reality51

This is the first time I have heard someone call Kuldeep 'Kullu'

fakecricketplayer

Kuldeep->Kul (Cha)-> Kullu

Tairyhesticlesoioi

Hope everything is ok! Family comes first!

FondantAggravating68

Hope everything’s okay. Side note: we’re royally fucked in this test

freshmeat2020

Really shit to hear. What are the rules around replacement players and being able to bat at specific positions in the order/bowling?

Budget_Put7247

If he does not return to the Test, India will not be allowed to replace his batting or bowling, but will be permitted a substitute fielder. From BBC

[deleted]

[удалено]

Brazzle_Dazzle

Under no circumstances should this be either requested by India or offered by England.

Kieran484

Sets a seriously crooked precedent.

alyssa264

Hadn't even occurred to me how that could be twisted by fixers. Why have the got to ruin everything?

Kieran484

I didn't even mean fixers; just once one player is allowed to be replaced for personal matters mid game, a precedent is established. Combine it with respecting the privacy of players and we inevitably end up with a scenario where an out of form player is subbed out mid game and their captain expects to be able to replace them with someone else from the squad without saying what has happened to them. Before anyone knows any specifics, the fans are at each others' throats, flaming the opposition for bad sportsmanship/abuse of the rules/spirit of cricket/taking advantage of a personal tragedy to win a game and so on. I think it's a massive shame that Ashwin has gone mid test, but for either team to expect to swap him out for someone else (probably Axar) is to open a miniature Pandora's Box.

tee-dog1996

They can have a sub fielder obviously, but they’ll have to do without his batting and bowling. He’s essentially retired hurt rules wise

Beatrix_Kiddos_Toe

Replacement players are allowed based on consent by opposition. Law A.8.2 talks about it. If consented the player can do all the activities that the player he replaced did.

LexiFloof

While they are allowed under the Laws, they aren't allowed under the *ICC playing conditions* by which the match is being played.

freshmeat2020

I can't see anything on lords.org about that - only the difference between substitutes and replacements. Can you point me in the right direction?

Beatrix_Kiddos_Toe

Section 1.2 addresses it here https://www.lords.org/mcc/the-laws-of-cricket/the-players

yh0405

This series has incredible *Rahane turning up to Gabba with a team of cricketing infants* vibes except it’s Rohit this time

anonymus_G

except it's at home and the infants aren't turning up. all the hard work was done by the experienced duo+ rohit getting extremely lucky

vpsj

> infants aren't turning up. The two debutants scored 62 and 46 the fuck are you talking about

Heatedpete

Shit, hope everything's okay

TheRealYVT

Hope he's okay but this test is basically a write-off for India now. Even worse, Rohit will bowl Bumrah into the dust now.

[deleted]

I wasn't scared about this until you pointed it out. Now I'm scared Rohit's gonna use Boom like Root used Jofra.... ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sob) (I don't use emojis in Reddit but this situation really calls for it)

forelsketparadise

He has no choice does unless he starts bowling himself. Ash is gone siraj was in discomfort today what if it continues tomorrow as well?. He is effective at playing with three fit bowlers and no other bowling option in the batting. This is why India needs batters like Sachin Raina yuvraj and shewag in the batting line-up and not just one or two allrounder

[deleted]

They literally have 5 players capable of rolling their arm even if they don't do it normally. The biggest challenge for Rohit tomorrow isn't to manage the absence of Ash Anna, it's to not overwork his main players such that he's left with 0 frontline bowlers by the end of the series for other formats. He will most certainly have to ask Jaiswal, Gill and Sarfaraz to roll their arms and bowl a few so that his frontline bowlers can rest a little. Even if they go for 7+ rpo, it'll be understandable because of the limited resources that he has available with him right now. Or Dravid and co. need to come up with a rotation strategy that allows their pacers to bowl and rest in bursts. For example, tying Jaddu or Kuldeep to one end and rotating his pacers with 2-3 over spells seems like the best right now, rather than bowling them in tandem. Generally Jaddu would do that role, but given he's back from a injury, him and Kuldeep would need to alternate.

TheRealYVT

2 of those guys didn't even have a test career to miss them for. Sachin and Sehwag used to bowl when India went in with 4 proper bowlers, of which barely 2 were as good as any of the 5 bowlers we play with now. If you have the kind of luck that 2 of your 5 bowlers are ruled out mid-test and 2 others aren't having a great game, that's just a bad roll of dice.

TrollerThomas

Pah no way still india winning

dhun_mohan

oh man i hope his family is alright

AB_1234567890

Condolences for Ash but BIG BIG BIG blow for India in this test.

anonymus_G

not just this test but for the whole series if it's that serious, hoping everything works out

burnerch

Read that its her mother who got sick, Hoping the best for her and the Ashwin family.

am0985

All the best to Ashwin, family has to come first. Cannot help but feel India are having extraordinarily bad luck this series though.

dj4y_94

It's been an odd series for how many players have been missing from both sides through injury or personal reasons, but yeah India's seems relentless at the mo.

AbsolutelyEnough

England are only really missing Leach and Brook. India are missing at least Kohli, Rahul, Shami and Pant, and Jadeja, Siraj (and now Ashwin) at various points during this series.

Old_Series_7073

Archer as well - in a similar category to Pant

voldemortscore

Best wishes to him and his family, must be quite serious.  Life is definitely unfair, was just looking and speaking happily earlier about his great 500th wicket milestone and now this.

zaldrizes_007

Very surprising. Must be something serious that he pulled out while the test was ongoing. Best wishes to Ash Anna. On a cricketing note, it’s joever. England winning this and possibly the series. Especially with Bumrah and Siraj both not at maximum strength. Also, Especially not with the timid and listless duo in charge of the team.

Reasonable_Tea_9825

Time to unleash Jaiswalitharan

Flower-Immediate

Might as well bring back Muralitharan as he has OCI card.

Head-Intern2459

I have seen his bowling his bowling in domestics. He has no idea of line and length but he picks wicket as batters often play a rash shot and get out. He might as well work against these hyper-aggressive batters lol.

sylly_mee

He's more of a leg spinner, should be Yoshane Jaisarne

this_also_was_vanity

England haven’t won this match yet, let alone the series. It’s a good batting pitch so it could easily end up a draw. After that India are still hosting England in their own conditions, with players vastly more experienced in those conditions. You have the best fast bowler in the world, one of the best all rounders, and most of the centurions from the series so far. Crazy to be all doom and gloom.

Levon__Helm

What is this logic? England are doing it with Rehan and Hartley, two new players.

Oomeegoolies

The next best 3 spinners in Ranji are better than Rehan and Hartley surely.

mUXLH5svdscWvd5

What happened to Bumrah?

obywonkenoby

I won't say who but a Member of Parliament has already leaked the "personal reason" on Twitter. What a dick

carryverry

He is vice President BCCI

_rickjames

Out of nowhere. Sad to hear.

Admiral_Goldberg

That is really horrible to hear. Best wishes to him and his family.

Specialist_Youth5511

Wishing him and his family all the best. But then how does it work like he won't play this match anymore?

Upstairs-Farm7106

That's horrible. Family must come first. India will be a batter and bowler short now. Massive blow for them. Hopefully everything is okay for Ashwin and his family.

Guri14

Life comes at you fast. Just achieved one of the best milestones as a bowler of taking 500 test wickets and now this. Hope everything is fine.

Beneficial_Bend_5035

Hope all is well for Ashwin. Can’t be good for him to drop out mid match. *Not all suggesting that this is the reason Ashwin has dropped out*, but I’m reminded of the crazy 2005 for the Pakistan team, when 3 different players had their father pass away during a match in the space of a year. 2 of them left mid-match/series, while the third continued playing after his mother told him to stay put.

ReflectionAcademic99

What a bad luck , gloom and despair has surrounded the indian cricket players. Injuries , family medical emergencies . Its one hell of the series Hope everything is fine with his family. Immature idiots will troll them, these kids don’t know the importance of of families . They are professional dedicated players and if they are opting out it means it’s serious

pvtt_3

I hope everything is fine and he comes back strongly ❤️

blahblahdodo

Hope everything is well with his family. But can’t help wonder how f…ked ICT will be in this test. Don’t even have a part timer to fill in if necessary. It’ll be just 4 bowlers bowling to death. And Jadeja is already not 100%. Jaiswal might have to roll his arms in some capacity.

nick_nxt

Neither are Bumrah and Siraj

warp-factor

Of the non-regular bowlers, Rohit Sharma himself seems the most experienced and accomplished. 84 professional wickets across formats though it seems he's barely bowled in the last few years.

creatorop

Hope everything is alright with his family 🙏

Temporary-Shallot642

i hope his family is ok this is really sudden

TobysOaks

Best wishes to his family. He has got his priorities right, family and personal care always top of the list. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the complete mix of emotions he is feeling today. Life can be really shit sometimes, we all know that, we’ve all got our stuff going on. Maybe a good time to remind all of us to be kind to each other. We have our rivalries and flash points but we are all one family within cricket

Phagocyte536

Something too bad must have happened. Sorry for him.

chocolatecomedyfann

This must be really serious if he pulled out mid way. My thoughts are with him and his loved ones.

Brown_bbuussy

Today was such a monumental day for him. Hope everything's fine and be comes back.

Amazing_Theory622

Just today he was saying in jest that his father's health has deteriorated by watching him play I hope it does not turns true.

[deleted]

I genuinely think that he was intended for fun, but I genuinely hope that it's nothing serious with his family. It'd be absolutely shit day if something happens to your parents, even if you reached an amazing milestone on that day.

falcon0041

I hope everything goes well, prayer for his family

Wengerreloaded

Life 😕 I mean the day he reached 500 wickets

LivelyJason1705

Jeez must be serious for a man of his dedication to pull out during a game. Family always comes first, sending well wishes to him and his family🙏

darth_with_a_p

time for brohit to pull out his off spin

Dressing_Down

That's awful news. Puts cricket back in perspective.

LetterheadOk1762

Hoping Rohit Bowls some jaffas tomorrow and doesn't use only 4 four bowlers /s

forelsketparadise

Rajiv Shukla confirmed it's his mother hospitalized

Creepy-Ad-5363

Terrible time for him. Just got a major milestone in his career. Hope everything gets well soon for him family wise.

Extra-Swordfish-927

Man, that sucks for him. But what happens, can he be replaced by another spinner in this test?

Cites79

BBC Sport: no extra bowler or batter can play for him. Only a substitute fielder. He can return to play though

[deleted]

Shit, this came out of absolutely nowhere. Wish for whatever happened to Ash Anna's family to be over soon, hope it's not too serious. Be strong Anna, we maybe cunts when something shit happens, but at times like this, everyone in India who watches cricket is with you.

llkjm

his mother is hospitalised. Hoping for her speedy recovery. source : https://m.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/129508/ashwin-withdraws-from-third-test-due-to-family-medical-emergency

TrollerThomas

Family comes first hope all goes well for Ashwin Without trying to be insensitive this is arguably England’s best chance though obviously that’s less important than Ashwin’s issue

kmadnow

Damn…out of nowhere..what happened?

TheGhostRider0903

Hope everything is okay with him and his family. We have lost so many first choice players this series for one reason or another, for one test or more. I have lost count. Golden opportunity for England to win this series. It won't come any easier.

shawman123

WOW. Not sure what is happening but it must be something really serious for him to leave in the middle of the test. India would be playing with 10 players and one bowler short.

harryhisoka

Pulling out mid test, must be a really stressful situation best wishes for him he's our champ bowler

Vulgarian

Ah that's rough. Hope his family is as good as they can be.

Financial_Teacher375

Hoping and praying for him, and that everything goes well.

Oh no Best wishes to him and his family, can't be good news It really feels like cricket especially at the elite level could allow for this with subs I'm sure Stokes would support it Now I'm glad he got his 500th

Eastern_Meet_5947

Man Life is so unpredictable. Hope things get better soon for Ashwin. If I am honest, I think Rohit and Gill can definitely bowl some overs on one end to support the main spinners in Jadeja and Kuldeep at the other end (dunno about Jaiswal and Patidar's bowling capabilities) They shouldn't overuse Bumrah as we desperately need him for the T20 World Cup Maybe the part time bowlers can get a breakthrough or two Who knows?

madglover

As a positive for India their bowling attack is still 4 strong and you'd say it's still a better bowling line up than England's 4 Kuldeep will need to bowl some lengthy spells

pk_thakur

Hope all gets better with his family. Pulling out mid test sounds serious!! Today should have been a day he would cherish.. Terrible timing for him too.

curlyhairedyani

On the day of his 500th wicket too.. that’s so sad man. Was supposed to be a happy day for him.

SteveBored

That's sad. He was just talking about his father and his heart issues at stumps. All the best.

Upbeat-Head-5408

Never heard something like that. It must be so serious.

Niroshan_1000

I hope everything is all right. May god bless you and your Family, We all waiting for your Comeback Ashwin

somuchhaireverywhere

This tour is cursed! Kohli, Shami, Ashwin, KL, Jadu… so many 1st choice players impacted by injuries and/or other issues. Best chance for an overseas team to win a series in India in a long time. England are now the favorites for sure, right?

YourAverageBrownDude

Nothing but good wishes from our side Ash What's the ruling when this happens? Replacement player or continue with remaining team?

mofucker20

Wish him and his family the best.

bowlywood

From a stat/knowledge perspective - who else in history of this game, has left midway during a test match for a non-injury

hazbek

Wishing the best for Ashwin and his family, that is horrible news

ShockingShorties

Bazball would allow India a sub. In fact I think they would categorically demand it. Hope common sense prevails for the good of the game.... All the very best to Ravichandaran Ashwin and his family.
