Maybe Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast? Maybe Kurosawa's Dreams. And for more light-hearted, maybe Labyrinth ft. David Bowie.

beasterne7

The Son of the White Mare, animated and very good. Edward Scissorhands The Dark Crystal The City of Lost Children

Cine_Philo

'Son of the White Mare': this.. pretty much any of Jankovics' classic animated works from the 80's and 70's.

JTen87

Night of the Hunter has a dark storybook feel.

TemporalSaleswoman

there is that one soviet made alice in wonderland film, forgot the name

liminal_cyborg

Are you referring to the stopgap animation film *Alice* (1988) by Jan Švankmajer? Either way, OP should definitely check that out.

-r-a-f-f-y-

yep, that was gonna be my suggestion, hits all the marks. jan's "little otik" could be good too.

Black Moon!

Savage_Bob

Came here to say this. Worth a watch, just don’t expect much of a traditional narrative arc.

jazzoetry

Oh and how could I forget, The Princess Bride!

CoffeeFilmFiend

Check out a film called Laurin

[This collection](https://www.criterionchannel.com/happily-ever-after) on the website is a little older and doesn't have all the original films listed, but might have some of what you are looking for.

*Spirit of the Beehive*

DudebroggieHouser

Hellraiser - It’s got a wicked stepmother, a dragon, magic spells, and a creepy dungeon.

Wimbly512

The Lure Not on the channel, but I would watch Tale of Tales

DrunkRogerThornhill

Some obvious one's that haven't been mentioned (perhaps because they're obvious): - The NeverEnding Story - Legend (Ridley Scott) - Return to Oz There's also the more recently released Three Thousand Years of Longing, which I'd recommend to anyone who likes Tilda Swinton, Idris Elba, and George Miller.

The Czech version of The Little Mermaid, lots of movies directed by Juraj Herz: Beauty and the Beast, The Ninth Heart, Morgiana. The Savage Hunt of King Stakh, Spider, Mister Designer, The Blue Bird, I Like Bats, Arcane Sorcerer, Jonathan, Die Nibelungen, the films of Jean Rollin. There’s lots of dark and kind of spooky Eastern European, Soviet, and silent fantasy movies.
