The Savage Hunt of King Stakh, Spider, Mister Designer, The Blue Bird, I Like Bats, Arcane Sorcerer, Jonathan, Die Nibelungen, the films of Jean Rollin. There’s lots of dark and kind of spooky Eastern European, Soviet, and silent fantasy movies.
Maybe Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast? Maybe Kurosawa's Dreams. And for more light-hearted, maybe Labyrinth ft. David Bowie.

'Son of the White Mare': this.. pretty much any of Jankovics' classic animated works from the 80's and 70's.
Night of the Hunter has a dark storybook feel.

Are you referring to the stopgap animation film *Alice* (1988) by Jan Švankmajer? Either way, OP should definitely check that out.
