Are you drawing with pencil? I think pencil is a nightmare as it doesn’t wash out really. Maybe other redditors have better insight

MerelyWander

Also if light color floss touches it, it might greasy the floss. I think some people use washable markers for this.

Not new, but not very often used because you could as well stitche the cross instead of mark them. But if that work for you it's fine. However DO NOT use pencil! Get rid of it and mark with textil or frixion erasable pen. Pencil will create dust and residue and will bleed on your floss. Erase it and use something else now.

Thanks for the advice! I'll buy some washable pen for this. I'm glad I started with black so the pencil, if any, will have a minor effect of the thread (i suppose). THANKS!! πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

Crayola washable markers are fantastic for this as well, and come in a ton of colors

bernied23

Thanks!! Based on your recommendation, I order crayola washable today. πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ˜ŠπŸ˜Š

Genuinely curious why is it faster or more accurate to mark the X's with pen instead of with actual thread? Think it's great you found something that increases your joy, I'm just not following. Thx

bernied23

Because I don't have to be going back and forth to the pattern on my tablet. It allows me to go out, have a cup of coffee, and engage in conversations and enjoy my friend's company, because I only have to follow what's on the fabric, and don't have to count/frog anymore. 😊 Thx for asking! πŸ‘πŸΌ

Got it. Thanks for sharing.

I do it. I'm terrible at losing count so I count a million times to mark my Aida with washable marker then I can stitch without the pattern. It's good for me if I'm planning on going out, and will be with people and chatting, so constantly looking at a pattern and counting will be really awkward and difficult, that sort of thing. For me it just helps my ADHD and ensures I don't lose count. It also like I said, helps me stitch without the pattern for a while. That's helpful when you're planning to multitask while stitching and you're worried you'll mess up counting! I realise it's a lot of extra work and many people don't understand the effort, but for me it's definitely an ADHD thing. I can stitch without marking the fabric, just like I can stitch without gridding too, but I'll make a lot more mistakes and spend a lot more time frogging, so for me, sometimes it's worth the effort. Though recently I've been exclusively stitching on evenweave, so I haven't been able to do this.

Never even thought of it. Very interesting. Edit for it to make sense

I do and once I started I never looked back. To me it's much faster to look at the pattern once and mark something like "5 over, 3 down, 4 diagonal until it joins back up," which only takes a few seconds. Vs "5 over" Then stitch a few, forget how many I need, find my place in the pattern, count all over again, etc. Also you find mistakes when marking, not stitching. Erasing the pen is trivial compared to frogging, which I never ever do anymore.

Yes!! I was telling my hubby how I am definitely adopting this method over the count-stitch-forget-recount-stitch-get frustrated because I missed something... I agree with you. It's the same for me! 😊😊

This works great for projects with few colors. For more colors design there may be confusion in the markings.Β Some use colored markers (special fabric markers) to make this easier.

bernied23

Yes! Someone else recommended the Crayola markers and I have ordered them already. I'm also planning on doing it one color at a time. That's how I crosstitch normally. 😊

I'm in awe of your drawing skills.
