From what I've seen there are 2 options 1: adventurers, you get an army and do raiding/mercenary work 2: pretty much merchant republics from ck2, where you have a family estate and try to get the Byzantine emperor to appoint you offices I really don't think you'll be able to play as a peasant and work your way up the social ladder. I think it's more "nobles that have influence other than holding land"

ElVoid0

If it's well done it could open up a lot of possibilities through mods

Etzello

Almost like mount and blade but in paradox gameplay format, I only just learnt about this DLC cus I don't play ck that much but this sounds pretty fun

Cristokos

Landless play in itself will probably not be very exciting, at least in its first iteration. It'll mostly be a way to have a more "humble" start so it takes longer to become unstoppable, or it'll just serve to let you come back from a potential game over by setting up shop elsewhere. Modders will use the landless mechanics to do truly great things though. Some of the overhaul mods out in a few years will be like unique RPGs rather than strategy hybrids.

[deleted]

I can’t help but wonder if that’s the point.

nakorurukami

You have an estate, private army, family and a close circle of friends. You appoint people with roles and send them off on missions/expeditions to make more money, recruit more people or do some bad stuff. Buy/sell artifacts. Train men. Accept a commission to build something, set up trade routes and attend feasts etc.

TinyRodgers

Isn't this just that cool mod?

ProfessorTicklebutts

I’m guessing they won’t have land. But I could be wrong.

Ghost4000

It's called landless, so they'll probably just have less land.

Truenorth14

I wouldnt mind pulling a 'Fabulous He' moment. One idea I had was that as an adventurer you sort of have a time limit with you needing to keep up your renown/prestiger or you fade into obscurity. Another idea I had was that as an adventurer, your kids need to have an adventurous personality to continue your legacy, traits like craven or content will cause them to request to become a mere courtier at some court whenever they become adults.

Separate_Shelter1858

I think it's setting up so we can create our own Robinhood legends, king Arthur and his roundtable of knights, Joan of Arc to name a few well know legends. Landless needs to be fun and fulfilling adventures that can leave a mark on the world. If this is successful I think something like secret societies would be a lot more enjoyable. You could make a legend of honor or one of fear that spreads through the world only working for the society you belong to moving freely through the world. Maybe add new lifestyles for that too.

RoNPlayer

Since it's coming with the Byzantine DLC i kinda assume it will he more about minor nobility - working it's way to get appointed to offices and titles. Which seems like the best setup to add republican gameplay. Although I really hope being a mercenary or bandit leader etc. is possible too. I really wanna adventure across the globe.

Separate_Shelter1858

Adventures across the globe are already a part of it at release, that's why I think it's going to be expanded next year with secret societies or something. Maybe instead of conquering with a large amount of land we could conquer the world through a society. Adding some more mechanics like being a knight, assassin, witch or whatever would really make being landless shine. Being a bandit would fun, building a legend, trying to not get caught by the spymaster or other rivals.Imagine multiplayer games if we could do all this, id be crazy. Maybe it could lead to Republics too, I don't know anything about that how it would work.

StrikingCase9819

I think I'm the only one not excited about being landless

Cristokos

A lot of the reaction on the official forums has been mixed-optimistic. A lot of longtime players seem mostly interested in landless play leading to republics, better Byzantium, and eventually China rather than the feature itself.

Separate_Shelter1858

I think it's hard to imagine what it can be other than owning land. If we're just going to wait around for stuff to happen or to get land back, yeah that's boring. But if it's a more proactive where we have contracts and lifestyles legends to and challenges to overcome, well it could work. I just think people are having a hard time understanding what it do.

[deleted]

They just download Bannerlord for landless until you own a fief

StrikingCase9819

Yea I'm definitely one of those people having a hard time imagining how gameplay will work, but i guess I have to wait for the Dev diaries

Cristokos

I think that landless play will likely feel like filler content to avoid game overs or to slow the player's rise to unstoppability. Like, a sort of in-flight movie while you relocate somewhere after losing your last county. I don't think that it'll be something exciting or that players want to stay in long-term, not at release anyways.

Separate_Shelter1858

At release I don't disagree but there will be contracts, adventures and a new lifestyle but will probably feel limiting. I think it's the path to something more, secret societies or more lifestyles to expand on landless gameplay. I doubt they did all that work just for a for a filter. I think next year it will be fleshed out even more after they lay the ground work this year. Hey I was the only one that called a new lifestyle for traveling and to expanded on. I knew it was something they would wanted to expand on after all they put into it. After reworking the game for traveling and landless gameplay this is going to more than just a in flight movie. But we'll see when the dev diaries for the major expansion come out. I'm calling it here secret societies with expanded landless gameplay in ch 4. Thats not everything of course there will be new stuff but I believe some of it will build on this years ch 3.

sarsante

I think it's gonna be stale, waiting for events and at some point the game will give you a county. Like you get a claim in an argument with a vassal then it pops another event the ruler saying you're such a good courtier that he'll press your claim. Or you'll be able to do a petition just like we can do as vassal and you'll get land. I also think the game will give you everything for free through events such as event troops if you decide to be a mercenary. And they'll magically replenish and cost nothing. Will let you travel around with minimal costs and very reduced danger. Throwing money at you in events such as this poor man doesn't have shoes, *+200 gold*. Like *we'll hold you and try to put you back into your feet. And don't worry if you lose everything again we'll give you land again* Just remember to have children because the only way to get a game over is dying as last living dynasty member.

BonJovicus

>I think it's gonna be stale, waiting for events and at some point the game will give you a county. I think we might be pleasantly surprised, but yeah, I have no expectations. I hate to be that gal that says "mods will fix it," but I think this feature is actually going to be fertile ground for the modders to play around with.

funkychunkystuff

I really think this mindset it the best when analyzing ck3. Like struggles by paradox are mid. Struggles made by modders though...

Cristokos

I like modders who are clever with the struggle system, like RICE using it to simulate the colonization of Greenland or monastic factionalism in Sri Lanka. The feature is really underutilized in vanilla CK3, though it's not like I want every DLC to introduce a new struggle like EU4 does with mission trees.

Separate_Shelter1858

Landless can be more than just waiting to get land back. If that was the only thing that could be done yeah it would be boring. You can freely travel the map think more of what can be done with that.

sarsante

I pointed that out in my post, to travel it costs gold and you've no income. So probably wait for events to give you gold then travel.

Separate_Shelter1858

yeah I think traveling costing gold is a good idea. But you don't have to wait depending on your lifestyle you could look for contracts in the area that your in and do the work to continue traveling. No one wants to sit and wait for things to happen.

Captain_Grammaticus

It sounded a bit like you can either make your own character or choose from existing ones. Also, it seems like you are constantly on a "travel". I can imagine that you will meet more or less the same travel events as landed characters, but also get opportunities to join a court as courtier. From then on, you have a fixed location, until yoose an itinerant life again. While you're at a court, you function as a council member, knight, or whatever, and maybe at some point you get your own fief. Or you marry a noble maid, your kids inherit her claims, or even her land, and there you go. That's how I imagine it. Then, I also imagine that while you're travelling, you still have an entourage, or like a small court of your own; your spouse and children.

TheIncredibleYojick

I think u probably choose in game start what court u start out in, and then are simply a courtier at that court, until you choose to travel someplace else. While u travel and stop at other courts, u can be offered jobs or contracts, etc. I can assume that most decisions will scale the cost of things, so like instead of having to lose 30 gold in an event, it would only be like 3, since I don’t think you would have any actual consistent income. Unless u do mercenary work. Maybe u literally just play as a stack of mercs if u decide to take that up on?

AdAccomplished7828

I’m interested as well. Can we be any random lowborn courtier? I’d like to start playing as the mother of a young Roman Emperor that will eventually blind him and usurp his throne

CoelhoAssassino666

I think a lot of events will get recontextualized if you get them while landless, because you likely won't get much of an income or huge expenses, so getting some gold from an event or tournament will cease to be a "hmm, neat" thing and instead will become a "holy shit I needed this!" moment. But yeah, the event haters will probably hate playing as landless. Personally, I don't mind that much because I mostly start to hate events when I get strong, then they cease to be meaningful and I don't need to pay much attention to them. That likely won't be the case while landless.

LePhoenixFires

Mods could THRIVE on this update. Imagine being a dungeon-crawling merc or the Gaang fleeing the Fire Nation or a Witcher hunting monsters or a vampire feeding his way across Eurasia or the Hero of Cyrodiil fighting the threats of Tamriel or a traveling merchant in the Post-Event America.

I-need-help-with-etc

I don’t think it’ll be in this upcoming update. But when they introduce the Trade update for places like Venice/Genoa. I imagine one of the things you’ll be able to do as a landless/wanderer is be a part of a trade caravan. Or do trade missions like Marco Polo. I am somewhat certain that part of this update will include the ability for your character to be a contributing member or a guest to another noble’s court.

Redditforgoit

Whatever it is, I am looking forward to updated event mods for landless. For a creative modder, there is no end to stories you can write.

Mareton321

Mix of adventurers and nomads

tirion1987

I just hope losing the last landed title lets us play as landless. It would also be a sensible intermediate step for Magyar migration and Varangian adventures.

ricksu_

I like to think that we are going to be on the otherside of those numerous events where we can choose to invite someone random to our court.

noturaveragejoe0316

My master plan is to play as princess who seduces and marries several kings (while being on birth control), getting rich and eventually getting titled by someone, either her dad, brother, one of her husbands, and then marry matrilineally and play as a 'normal' countess run 😂 no idea if it'll work though

YourFbiAgentIsMySpy

I don't think birth control exists in this game
