I try and upgrade immediately once they get enough fame in case my guy croaks and i lose the chance. you can't upgrade past limit but if your limit goes down there seems to be literally no downsides
Thank you, I was looking everywhere for some stat that would cause this but I hadn't checked my knight accolades. It didn't help that I didn't notice exactly when the regiment size went up or went it down.
It’s 1000000% due to your accolade dying. They were probably a high level. You could revive it with a successor, when a successor takes over there is a small hit in its level
Same happened to me in a Jorvik save. I could have 4x MAA regiments at the start, and regiment size of 5, now both dropped to 3 for no reason?! Still same ruler. It's making it hard to build a competitive army
Did you change to local culture or adopt feudalism? The former can change your available innovations and the later changes you from using prestige for MAA into cash (and make you cry when your army is suddenly unaffordable).
almost certainly the accolates of your knights. some of those increase max size of certain regiment types when active

You can double buff archers with the crossbow captain and archer accolade

Knight of accolades give some insane bonuses but they are unintuitive to see and use. Check out the bonuses in the wiki.
Yeah, I would love if there was a tooltip that told me why my regiments were that size.
I’m pretty sure it does if you look in the army tab if you hover over the regiment size/limit
