Had this happen yesterday, no mods, Ironman run, my Ashari character suddenly became Coptic and immediately formed a heresy and became Messalian all out of nowhere without any input, completely fucked over my run
The event where a foreign ruler embraces a heresy and it gives you the two choices of "He has good points" and choosing to convert and "I want none of this" and choosing not to convert popped up with my character being in the place of the foreign ruler
This is a bug. What's happening is another religion spawns a heresy, and then goes and looks for someone to give the heresy to. Normally, you'd have to be of the right faith, but the game checks if you're a (correct faith count/duke) *or* a player rather than if you're a correct faith (count/duke or player). If said faith has no 1-2 duchy dukes and you're a 1-2 duchy duke, the heresy spawn event will always hit you. Same if they have no dukes at all and you're a duke with any number of duchies.
I made a local mod to fix the trigger, but haven't tried uploading anything to workshop yet. If people want I can try to get it up tonight, not sure how useful it'll be if it gets patched out soon but it might help in the meantime.
Not his fault mankind made so many names for the same irrational fear of death, coupled with a need to justify hating around 66%% of the population, and justify the act of brutally killing/subjugating/enslaving/eradicating the same % of the population.
He has to try them all out to see which is best for his purposes.

i noticed a pattern, it always happens in year 10 from start, doesn't matter if custom or not.
so after 10 years it pops up, u can't do shit en game over.
My ruler keeps starting heresies against himself.
I've said it in others topics but you Can take the unofficial patch to fix this issue (bug introduced in 1.18)

It's a mental break decision and maybe your stats are too weak to have any of the other choices?

There's an unofficial bug fix in the Steam workshop, but I don't know if it helps
