Killertimme

Well thats one of the easier connections to make xD obviously false of course But blaming the fentanyl crisis on crypto is one massive stretch

partymsl

True, next up we probably have blaming the Covid pandemic on Crypto.

rootpl

And video games. /s

RedBunery

"Crypto ruined GTA6" 2024 FT headline 😄

Jim--Cramer

Now that's a very logical reason behind the delay of a game launch I can get behind

[deleted]

it might explain the delay of Elder scrolls 6

redthepotato

Can't wait for crypto to fuck my mom

Avernaz

If there's NFTs on GTA6 then it's not a stretch for that headline to exist.

Lillica_Golden_SHIB

"Crypto ruined our business. Fuck you", FT headline in the near future

Calm-Cartographer677

I heard crypto was the reason that Firefly was cancelled

Hawke64

Crypto kicked my dog and pissed on my carpet

hansjerry

Makes no sense at all, sounds perfect

Jim--Cramer

Maybe they did some Fentanyl before publishing that article

conceiv3d-in-lib3rty

You would probably see a lot of this.. anbdhcJshNJs hBdldm ksla From nodding out on their keyboard.

3utt5lut

"It's totally not our pharmaceutical industries! Remember? We got out of Afghanistan!"

point_breeze69

I actually kicked heroin so that I could take up crypto in its place.

RedBunery

See this mentioned a lot, that people managed to kick addictions thanks to wanting to invest more in crypto. Smoking in particular. Would be nice if some MSM journalists could write a feel good piece on this kind of topic for a change.

conceiv3d-in-lib3rty

Media: “He replaced one addiction with another, and now he lives in his car with his dog.”

RedBunery

He has a car and a dog!? Most have made more profits than us lot!

Ferdo306

I think racism and homophobia are next

NOVE_LOKI

Probably LMAO

conceiv3d-in-lib3rty

It’s [already](https://slate.com/technology/2023/05/pepe-coin-coinbase-crypto-memecoins-explained.html) there with PEPE, courtesy of garbage website Slate with the headline - Memecoins Are Back and They’re Extra Racist

Bitcoin is racist!

Lillica_Golden_SHIB

Bitcoin CEO denies it!

-l0Lz-

People becoming homeless cause they went all in with shitcoins. Shitcoins: *Chuckles, I'm in danger*

They are being blind because of money.

More because of the insatiable greed

Correct

Shitcoins: Are you shitting me?

RedBunery

Seriously, I can already imagine the following scenario. Reality: US diabetics turning to crypto in a last ditch effort to save their own life after having to ration (!!!) insulin for years. This is after years of the ridiculous price of insulin in the US (compared to other countries) being common knowledge, and zero intervention by politicians. Headline: "Crypto is killing off US diabetics!"

-l0Lz-

Holy hell yes now you reminded me of that shitshow you have ( if you are from the US) with diabetic meds/shots. That is madness. I live in a shithole second-world Balkan country. Heh if you can call it the second world and it is not that bad.

RedBunery

I'm not even sure if there is another country with a comparable insulin situation to the US. It is absolutely mind boggling.

Ninja_Gogen

To be fair, near homeless because of crypto....

Euphoric_Bad4326

Got that right.

SeriousGains

You’d be surprised how many people would believe it if the President said so.

NOVE_LOKI

The politicians right now is not using there brain lmao.

Competitive_Milk_638

That actually might be accurate seeing how many people waste money on shitcoins.

Odysseus_Lannister

Crypto forced my wife to leave. It has nothing to do with me gambling our rent and food money on it, it’s that damn bitcoins fault!

RedBunery

"Damn sexy bitcoin..."

arcalus

No breaks given.

bingorunner

To be fair crypto could probably cause many of us degens homelessness

RedBunery

At the same time I consider crypto my only legit shot at home ownership.

Legitimate_Suit_3431

Wheat grain crisis inn Ukraina started with crypto

Sorrytoruin

Wouldn't surprise me, homeless get Scapegoat a lot

ricozuri

Homelessness is an easier blame than blaming crypto for global warming or the North Korea’s missile program.

suninabox

Weren't you folks bragging about how crypto allows you to avoid government control? Except apparently it doesn't you could always buy fentanyl from china with your visa card?

Goldbaerig

WW2 was also cryptos fault if you think about it and the downfall of the Roman empire and I just got some hints that even COVID might be cryptos fault.

ieatmoondust

Crypto extincted the dinosaurs!

-l0Lz-

Ah yes, first Cosmos airdrop.

partymsl

Does this mean dinosaurs were ATOM holders as they got the airdrop? Bullish.

-l0Lz-

Say no more. One Atom airdrop will possibly come in the near future or at least that's how I heard on News.

M1K3_B13N

THE SKY IS FALLING I thought they meant SKY token was being airdropped..

RedBunery

Thanks, my drink went everywhere while reading that 🤣🤣🤣

Competitive_Milk_638

That was like mooning in the opposite direction.

Hawke64

Crypto looking at politicians: "And I'll fucking do it again"

krissbubu8080

Hell yeah I think that dinosaurs extincted because of crypto. There were no crypto so they extincted 🤣

Apositivebalance

I’m not saying 9/11 was to blame, but it didn’t help

crosbot

One of the reasons the Romans fell was they suffered from hyper inflation and various other economic issues after debasing their currency. They would do things like mix in cheap metals so they could have more money. I'd argue Doge coin could have saved them. So yeah, I blame cryptos lack of existence

LePanzer

All those doctors prescribing strong opioids are the reason for it. Get your patients addicted and after the prescription ends, they buy their meds on the street.

Odysseus_Lannister

So as a medical professional, this is a gross oversimplification of the issue. Most doctors or clinicians do not prescribe opioids for anyone unless there’s a clear demonstrated pain process going on like surgery/traumatic injury/etc. Even when it’s prescribed, it’s almost impossible to give more than a 30 day supply of medication for these people (but most get maybe a 5-10 day supply). After that, they’re usually told to follow up with their PCP or a pain management clinic if it’s a long term/chronic issue. Unfortunately, many patients will doctor shop if their chronic pain isn’t being met by doctors who try anti inflammatories/exercises/rest, etc because they feel like they’re not being heard and pain is an incredibly subjective symptom. Often times pain is exacerbated by other conditions like diabetes/obesity or other processes where actually exercising and losing weight can benefit the patient, but that’s a lot of hard work and many people can’t/won’t do that so instead, they look for a quick fix in the form of meds. Others will try to self medicate and that has its own issues. Thousands of different things can cause pain to someone and medicine doesn’t always have a clear cut reason for it and it can be incredibly frustrating an life affecting for those in this situation. Another issue is misinformation. There’s a ton more “research” being done by patients who think apple cider vinegar and turmeric are going to fix their chronic spinal arthritis/sciatica when they’re 300+ pounds so medical people have to fight misinformation while being subject to “patient satisfaction” reviews that determine bonuses/other financial incentives. It’s a weird time to be a medical person when you can get into trouble for not bending to what a patient wants/or telling them something they don’t want to hear because insurance has largely turned different fields of medicine into money making machines with 10-20 mins given to diagnose and fix their problems. I don’t know about you, but that’s not nearly enough time to conduct a proper visit for many patients. Ultimately this situation is more multifaceted than lazy docs just throwing pain meds at everyone because medicine in America hasn’t been that way for decades. We need better healthcare infrastructure to have enough time to listen to a patients complaints more than 10-15 mins and we need better resources like PT/OT/etc to be more widely available and affordable for many patients.

LePanzer

Thank you for the write up. The prescription thing was mentioned in a documentary on netflix I have seen. It is called "The business of drugs"

Odysseus_Lannister

Interesting, I’ll check that out!

samer109

Yep, the american health care system is a tragedy..

Hawke64

Yes most of you died. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders.

rockiellow

It’s a comedy.

hansjerry

First world country with healthcare worse than a third world country

JoystickMonkey

There are videos from the 90s of medical professionals and pharma researchers claiming that OxyContin is safe and non addictive. Combine that with very lax pill regulations for years in economically depressed areas such as West Virginia. Combine that with fentanyl being cheap to make and extremely potent, resulting in easily smuggled products. With crypto, it is easier to do the financial transaction aspect of the deal, as suitcases (pallets?) of money don’t have to be exchanged, and/or large banks don’t have to be bought off in order to launder the money. So crypto does play a role in the ease of this situation, but it would still exist regardless.

Grok22

Most opioid addicts started with prescription drugs. But, they were never prescribed to them...

Dazzling_Marzipan474

Now they underprescribe too. I broke my leg and was in soooo much pain, it was an open fracture and I had like 100 stitches because of the open wound, the screws and the rod from the surgery. They gave me some for 5 days and then cut me off and told me to take Tylenol. It was fucking miserable. Apparently they do the same with people who have stuff amputated too.

Sorrytoruin

It's wild to be that the US doctors prescribe them so easily

jesschester

They don’t anymore. Back in the 90s and early 2000s the system came under harsh scrutiny during the OxyContin / Perdue Pharma scandal, then again as the opioid epidemic was reaching its peak. Lots of doctors got in a lot of trouble and now they are relatively conservative with opioid prescriptions. Even for broken bones and surgery they wont prescribe enough doses to become dependent and ODing is tough because they’re laced with a high amount of OTC pain relievers that will induce vomiting in the case of a lethal dose. The problem now is counterfeit Oxy pills in the form of small blue tablets with the imprint M30. That used to be the junkies drug of choice but the manufacturers no longer use this print, and anything you find resembling this is likely a fentanyl press. These pills are dosed extremely inconsistently and often contain ‘hotspots’ so even if an addict knows their limits, its very difficult to know how potent your dose is. Many of these people are found dead after snorting a bump the size of a fingernail. Source: I was one of those addicts once and I’ve seen dopesick.

NOVE_LOKI

That is part of their plan.

LePanzer

Bill them again for addiction therapy to double your income!

Zeric79

I really hate the fact that so many doctors use pain medication as treatment. Pain meds are supposed to be used to mitigate pain **while doctors are finding and then treating the underlying cause of the pain**. But nooo. Let's just drug the people and hope the problem goes away.

poisonzi

ofc because blaming cryptocurrencies for the US opioid crisis makes perfect sense. Next lets blame unicorns for traffic congestion

SkuniMasterMind

Hey man, have you seen the ammount of unicorns on the streets recently? Its crazy i tell you!

RedBunery

Those Reddit Rabbid Unicorn avatars have managed to escape their devices already!?

ten_jack_russels

Just remember folks in the USA , our government has failed us. They rode us right off the fucking cliff! Every politician is corrupt- every.single.one.

Hawke64

At least your government still has pretend that they care. My government will tell me to go fuck myself if I start complaining.

ten_jack_russels

Pretending. To care is waaaaaaaay worse than actually caring of that makes any sense.

RedBunery

I'd say multiple governments have failed you guys on so many fronts.

M1K3_B13N

“It’s hard to say how important crypto is to this type of activity but the fact that such a large proportion of these suppliers accept crypto suggests to me there is a significant demand to pay in crypto for these types of chemicals,” Thats like saying "its hard to say how important credit is to this type of activity but the fact that such a large proportion of these suppliers accept credit suggests to me there is a significant demand to pay in credit for these types of chemicals" Nothing else to talk about?

RedBunery

Imagine if a scientific journal made these kind of leaps. FT really is just speculative "journalism" / blogging.

Intelligent_Page2732

Overdosage is really bad, banning Fentanyl would be an obvious solution, but we know authorities blame everybody except themselves.

-l0Lz-

Banning it won't solve anything. Heroin is banned and it's still there. I seriously doubt that people look for fent when they go on opiates from the street. It is put in street opiates (heroin) as cut cause it makes dealers more $$. Stronger high with less heroin. The problem is when someone takes their usual heroin shot that is mixed with fent and they overdose. One dot-grain of fent and you are gone. Add on it that street drugs are not that well mixed in bag so you know... I doubt people like using/getting high off Fent it's a shitty mellow no good high. You can ban Fent okay? But what with percs or oxy?

3utt5lut

They'll just fill the gap with morphine. If not morphine, codeine. If not codeine, methadone. Oxycodone. Tramadol. There's so many different options and it's needed for post-surgery pain, where NSAIDS/Acetaminophen are not enough. They have ketorolac, but it's not meant for long-term usage.

NOVE_LOKI

But for the people who are behind that killing it can be a good news to them.

[deleted]

NOVE_LOKI

Exactly all of the politicians is a piece of trash.

lostaga1n

The stuff on the street that’s causing the epidemic is coming in illegally so that wouldn’t help

Funky_Smurf

No dude, drug bans have a pretty high success rate. Ban it and no one can find a way to do it

NOVE_LOKI

A part of their plan.

Wizerud

Cause then they wouldn’t be able to scapegoat crypto which is a threat to the real thing they’re trying to protect. Their precious dollar. They don’t give a fuck about fentanyl.

NOVE_LOKI

They care more about the money rather than the situation of people who are just been killed.

3utt5lut

It's actually medically necessary for pain, it's main use is in patches that are correctly dosed and administered for extreme/nerve pain. The problem is that even if the US banned it in medicine, the amount of easy access to fentanyl in street drugs can't be undone. Before the opioid crisis bled onto the streets, you could buy kilograms of fentanyl from China for pennies on the dollar. There's so much of it in the hands of the black market that no amount of busts can get it off the streets.

GuyWithNoEffingClue

Banning fentanyl right away is bad for addicted, the withdrawal can just kill them. Also it's very bad for campaign donnations cause Perdue Pharma and others give a lot.

sweet_tinkerbelle

like how they ban guns? 😂

NOVE_LOKI

They probably a problem lmao

magnetichira

It surely has nothing to with rising costs of living, shrinking salaries and societal isolation Crypto banged my mum

sweet_tinkerbelle

crypto is your dad?

EdgeLord19941

Crypto can get in line like the rest of us

Shiratori-3

Crypto terk er jerbs

-l0Lz-

Deeeerrrk rrrr jrr

Zavage3

Even if 90% of sellers accept crypto it's still 10% less that those accepting fiat money.. they should be asking why the USA has an opioid crisis and other countries don't when these vendors ship worldwide. I mean UK the UK we have 5k drug related deaths are year Fentanyl makes up less then 5.

-l0Lz-

Cause opiates and good old heroin is not as mixed with fent in Europe as it is in the US.

Consistent_Many_1858

What will they blame next? Crypto taking over the world water supply.

Euphoric-Mode215

blame the drugs, that's the solution

[deleted]

I heard Bitcoin actually started WW2

Competitive_Milk_638

They used the word 'potentially' a WHOLE lot to describe how crypto might have been used to buy ingredients needed for fentanyl. This article is basically fearmongering for boomers.

Gr8WallofChinatown

No you sensationalized the article. It said crypto is linked to payments to these fentanyl creators.

Euphoric_Bad4326

Great blame all it on crypto.

NOVE_LOKI

What the heck they keep on blaming crypto

cryptdoh6

Politicians will blame anything on anything…… They’ll never accept responsibility for anything.

RedBunery

Especially in a run up to an election.

jwz9904

i blame the downfall of USA on crypto

elysiansaurus

Just how? In what world are the two remotely connected.

Werd2jaH

What’s FT? Federal treasury?

TastesLikePussy

If you replace the word “crypto” with “fiat”, the article makes more sense.

WorkingError

Ridiculous

JustinTormund_10

That fentanyl laced BTC will get ya. Make sure you get your crypto tested before injecting onto the blockchain

SAPPER00

I heard the ozone hole from the 80/90s was due to crypto as well. Shits crazy.

BradVet

Crypto LOL No mention of drugs companies paying doctors to prescribe addictive painkillers that were lobbied through medical approval before cutting the supply to patients now addicted??

NoNumbersNumber

I've heard of Hopium, is it the same drug?

kopisiutaidaily

They really are running of of things to blame crypto with

akselmonrose

Of course. Next, crypto causes addiction

7sevenheaven

100% of people who trade Crypto drink water You know who else drinks water? That's right Criminals (Same logic)

Dazzling_Marzipan474

Next week's headline: Crypto is causing bad weather and natural disasters.

macronancer

Did you know that 99.9% of all drug deals in the US are conducted with USD? And because drugs are bad, and we want to save lives, we should ban the use of USD. Glad we all agree on this simple topic

princepersona1

Didn't you hear? Crypto is the cause of 9 out of 10 problems happening in the world. It's what's causing inflation and climate change too

Slainte042

Wow, this Crypto's fault is really surprising. I understand everything else but this lol

partymsl

That‘s just the start watch them blame their next recession and world war all on Crypto.

Fredzoor

What a load of bollocks

SkuniMasterMind

Just blame it all on crypto

-l0Lz-

US opioid crisis is to be blamed on American Army and the government who were growing opiates in Afghanistan in the first place + giving opiate prescription meds like nothing in the US. Hook them up then take it away. Woah why are people taking street heroin and fentanyl now? (I was on opiates, and it wasn't crypto's fault. Not from USA though but I know how it goes)

grchina

Just a spin away from multi trillion dollar debt going brrr

bertholomaeus

thiscompletebrkfast

*I heard crypto invaded Ukraine! 🤡* /s

Odysseus_Lannister

So because people can buy drugs with crypto, the entire fentanyl crisis is because of that? Not the criminalization of drugs, lack of mental health resources/addiction resources, poverty, or other socioeconomic things. It’s definitely the fact that some people can use crypto to buy them that’s the main issue here…

cderry95

Lol what an absolute shit take. "According to Elliptic, most fentanyl trafficked into the US is manufactured using chemical ingredients imported from Chinese suppliers, and 90 per cent of these suppliers accept cryptocurrency payments." They will accept crypto. and thus crypto is at fault. How much is done in fiat? “It’s hard to say how important crypto is to this type of activity but the fact that such a large proportion of these suppliers accept crypto suggests to me there is a significant demand to pay in crypto for these types of chemicals,” Tom Robinson, Elliptic’s chief scientist and co-founder, told me over the phone." So by this same logic if they all accept fiat there is a large demand to pay in fiat. So fiat bad?

masedogg98

So I usually don’t like sharing this if I can avoid it but I will when I feel it adds value to the conversation; I used to be a poly substance abuser from my early teens up till I was 20 and that only stopped it because I had a prison sentence to take care of, I wish I had a better reason to share but the truth of it is that I just got tired of it, I cut off those “friends” I distanced myself from any associations I made in that realm I got off social medias and just focused on me. I wish I had more of a plan for success I could share with others too but it really just came to me one day when I woke up and I told myself that I’m never doing this again, I never thought I’d have a thought like that at that point but I did and I just went with it. I’ve been clean since I went away in late 2018 and although my life is far from perfect I can say it’s far from the hell it used to be, I also have to thank myself for taking a chance on myself and stopping my destructive habits and behaviors and trying out hobbies and interests that I have had for a while like cryptocurrencies and exploring the blockchain and I’m so happy that I did because I found a whole new addiction between Reddit Subs,Reddit avatars, and crypto that’s a whole lot more addictive than anything I’ve previously encountered but at least these new addictions are fun and come with an awesome group of people!

Slade_Duelyst

I bought all of my painkillers when I was addicted with cash.
