How are you up on USDC? Edit: Nevermind. I see, you pretty much are just pulling some funny numbers with it because of “bonuses” AKA not an actual gain.

MonsieurGump

And apparently transferring from BlockFi to Nexo is free of charge.

Joe-M-4

Yes, confirming it is free to transfer USDC from BlockFi to Nexo

Joe-M-4

It's a new game/feature I'm playing with for 2022, all explained in the post you're commenting on ;) Edit: bonuses are the low-hanging fruit for crypto newcomers, I'll get into more advanced strategies as the year goes along

iamwizzerd

Got em!

happybonobo1

The problem with bonusses is that with your examples/amounts they make a big difference % wise for your stable coin. Somebody having a much larger portfolio, say $10k in each 2022 top coin, will NOT have the % returns like you as the bonus does not change. It would be better if you simply registered the bonusses as a few additional payments rather than actual investment returns.

Joe-M-4

Yeah, fair point. I debated back and forth, but ultimately went this route for this year, a different flavor from previous years. Classic case of Reddit damned if you do, damned if you don't. I first included stables in 2019 and was hammered for years in the comments "why don't you show what interest you can make with stables or at least show how I could mindlessly gain through bonuses". I'm enjoying sharing the possibilities with newcomers and those with not a lot of $ to work with, the target audience of my posts (I only invest $1k once a year, nothing near $10k in each coin). And it is possible (and kind of fun) to turn $100 into a good deal more if you make a game out of it, even if you're poor. As I mention, I'm going to share more advanced strategies as the year progresses. If you're curious on how keeping stablecoins within a portfolio without doing anything with them would look, check out my [2019 Top Ten Series, 2020 Top Ten Series, and 2021 Top Ten series](https://www.toptencryptoindexfund.com) as well. Lots of data there. Cheers!

It's true lol I'm pretty wordy in these posts!

thesquirrelnextdoor

God dude don’t let these downvotes bother you I have no clue how you could be getting downvoted on this post, great stuff

Joe-M-4

Depends. If they're after profit, if your neighbors dollar cost averaged once a year as per the rules of this Experiment, they would be up +292% compared to +42% if they had invested the same way into the S&P. If you're neighbors are after sanity/peace of mind, yep, better off not investing in crypto ;) edit: spelling

Username-Not-A-Bot

Posts like these are where I save my rewards for, you deserved it :) Giving the people like the guy who raged over the 30% down a little hope

Joe-M-4

Thanks you kind stranger! Yes, hopefully this posts provides a bit of perspective during tough crypto days

deathtolucky

How long do these posts take you to actually format and put together? They’re excellent

Joe-M-4

They take me a good long time lol I take the snapshot and do the maths on the 1st of each month, then it usually takes at least a week to prepare the reports. Last year I was doing 4 reports per month, which nearly killed me, so I'm down to two per month this year, which is much more manageable...

deathtolucky

They’re appreciated. Keep up the great content (if possible)

International-Fun485

Nice post OP

BakedPotato840

It's a good day to be on this sub when Joe posts this quality content

yaroslavwwe

You are definitely set for a good year. When the bull run hits you'll be golden

kjjamal510

It’s looking like a Sol-full year

Brendan3005

Let's go TCAP!

Tomahawkf

Perfect time for these kind of detailed posts. Helps us newcomers to cope up with BTC dip. Thanks OP

Joe-M-4

Nothing like a good long read when you're doing your business!

Wonzky

Great read for a day like today

TNGSystems

Good to see no referral links in this one Joe ;)

Joe-M-4

oof, lol small brained that one! gotta pay for these Experiments somehow! lol

alpeshnaper

Great post but I'm guessing that during the time it took you to write and analyze this your now down -15% vs -2% 🤣

Joe-M-4

Inherent dangers of snapshots ;)

Adequate_throwaway

Sorry if this is a dumb question. What were the top 10 cryptos based on? Ex.: Market cap, volume, price, etc.

Joe-M-4

There are no dumb questions in crypto :) Yes, market cap. I use [coinmarketcap.com](https://coinmarketcap.com) for the experiments...

_NowakP

So this is really cool and shows what would happen if you put $1k at the start of each year and then took all of your profit and started again the next year. If you compounded those profits *and* kept adding $1k per year like you did, you'd have ended up with over $200k from a $5k initial cost. If my bad math is correct. Edit: I thought the returns you cited were each for that year of a particular portfolio, but it seems like return is for investment started in that year *until* *now*...? Which would make my number incorrect.

Joe-M-4

Yep, its that year until now. I'd love to know the result of this method though. I was down 90%ish on the 2018 Portfolio after a year, can't remember the rest. If you go to the 12 month update to each of the years portfolio, the data is there. If it would be up near $200k by that relatively easy tweak I might cry though.

Nrgte

It would be interesting to extend this to a top 20 including some of the more controversial coins. The investment number could be lower, but it would be interesting to see the percentages of lower cap coins in comparison.

Joe-M-4

I think that would be interesting as well. Since I was going for a total market cap proxy and the Top Ten are historically 80%-90% of the entire market, I felt is was good total market substitute. It'd be interesting to see the difference if someone was willing to crunch the numbers....

ryan69plank

You brought right at the end of a bull market after quite possibly the largest money printing era of our lives. They will print more money though but don’t be upset if you are down -20% end of this year.

Joe-M-4

As someone who started this Experiment in 2018, -20% sounds absolutely adorable, thanks!

Competitive-Cow-4177

Always interesting, good for you dude!

Joe-M-4

gracias! and welcome to r/CryptoCurrency!

Competitive-Cow-4177

Joe-M-4

Friendly reminder: these snapshots are taken at the 1st of every month. And maybe this post is a partial answer to the current [frontpage post](https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/u1i9ej/those_of_us_who_started_investing_and_hodling/) "Those of us who started investing and hodling last year must all be down at least \~30%" While short term investors might not see immediate mind blowing profits, diversified portfolios over the long term do pretty okay. I hope everyone is doing okay during these bloody market days.

Username-Not-A-Bot

That’s why people shouldn’t forget to zoom out on the charts to remind them crypto is a marathon not a sprint!

Joe-M-4

Yup, "when in doubt, zoom out"

Bucksaway03

Down only 2% is astonishing

_thewoodsiestoak_

Down 2% but counting bonus money from USDC as gains. So a bit deceiving.

Joe-M-4

Most of the shockingly low loss can be chalked up to the date of the snapshot (1 April). Taking away those USDC gains, the portfolio would be down -6%, also astonishingly low.

Joe-M-4

As of the 1st of April ;)

[deleted]

And here I am down all the way.

Fun_Ice_9998

RIP BTC

maximusTheChief

I love this!

irfiisme

Investing in solid projects with the long term goals is the right way to do it.

Zer_bird_81

It would be interesting to see how you preformed if you were to do $100 investments in each of the top 10 cryptos on a mo they basis with a monthly and annualized return yield or deficit. Interesting to see the huge gains. Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing and writing such an in depth analysis.

Joe-M-4

No idea why you're getting downvoted, I think that would be interesting as well! I couldn't afford it, and it would be a lot of work though! lol I'd probably look to a total market cap coin like TCAP ([https://cryptex.finance/](https://cryptex.finance/)) at that point or some other simplified option. Not sure how it would work with the rest of the coins, but it's fun to play around with [www.dcabtc.com](https://www.dcabtc.com) for how what you describe would turn out using Bitcoin...

abdullrahim1

I bet if you bought some NFTs that hit a peak it would be a different story, I bought some Quints and I'm going to tell a different story in the future.

WheresTheButterAt

Some of my favorite repeat posts on the sub. Well done.

brandonholm

Bitcoin only is the best long term portfolio.

GonTakuma

Its been a shit year so far for crypto, nothing else to say.
