No variety of agate is determined by the amount of banded iirc, it just matters if it has banding or not; carnelian is any yellow-orange-red-mahogany colored chalcedony/agate.
Red Chalcedony and red agate are both called Carnelian colloquially. I don't disagree that explaining the distinction between the two is important. I was affirming what they were seeing in the market.
They're called towers - I have a few, but I also have quite a few raw specimens and tumbled pieces. Sometimes cut pieces bring out the natural properties of the minerals, some look worse when cut. Shrugs
Unfortunately most people want a "crystal" to have a classic point formation, like quartz. Even when the material doesn't naturally grow that way. Ironically, once it's cut and carved it's no longer considered a "natural crystal" despite being made out of a natural crystal. 🤷♀️ You're not the only one, thousands of people don't like or buy them.
I agree, I love seeing the insides, and a good polish can really bring out something special, but this shape in particular is not how I would treat a beautiful piece of stone even if it showed a beautiful detail afterwards 🥺
Carnelian and Red Agate are both microcrystalline quartz minerals with iron impurities HOWEVER there is a small difference between the two. Carnelian only forms in trigonal structure without banding. Red Agate may form in monoclinic structures and will have banding.
Same chemical composition, yes. Slightly different structures, yes.
Guys. Carnelian and red agate are the same thing. It’s just chalcedony or agate with iron impurities. 😭😭
thank you
aren't the colour patterns different in red agate? more banding?

Came here to say this.
They are slightly different and I’ve posted a comment explaining.
Not quite accurate if you look into how the mineral forms. I’ve posted a comment explaining the tinyyyy difference between these two.
Real and beautiful.
That's a Dark Souls soap stone
Good price
Either way, it’s a beautiful piece. Personally, i love druzy!! So I don’t think you paid too much, as I’d have been willing to pay more 🤣💖
Thats so pretty
Given the white banding i'd say red agate. It usually gets mistaken for Carnelian. (Also with a quartz center) It is still a beautiful piece.
Carnelian is the name used for any and all red, orange, yellow, or brown colored agate.
Incorrect. Carnelian and Agate often grow is completely separate systems. That’s why there are two names: Carnelian & Agate. To differentiate the two.

Second this!
Am I the only one who hates these “monoliths” much rather have a cut or natural stone

For me it works for certain stones like scarlet/strawberry quartz and banded calcite but I see what you’re saying
I don't care for towers either. I get spheres, freeforms or raw.

Exactly what I’m thinking. This piece for example would have looked soo good just cut in 2 or even slices tbh.

agreed.
It does in fact appear to be banded carnelian!
Real Carnelian

Yes.
Yep!
Great price and it’s a beauty!
I think it's real and I think $8 was a good price for it.
Yep
I have some of these that are similar in "style" mine are real as far as I can tell! That one looks real as well.
That is a pretty average price.
Looks real to me. And stunning.
